ORDER OF WORSHIP September 5, 2021 – 9:00 a.m./10:30 a.m.

Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost Theme: Rest

As We Gather Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest — and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man. Proverbs 6:6-11 (NIV2011) Prayer Before Worship Lord of the Universe, we praise You for Your creation, for the wonders of space, the beauty of the world, the value of the earth’s resources, and the skills of hand and brain which enrich our lives. We thank You for humanity in all its diversity, for the unique individuality of every child, woman and man, for the gathered communities of home, work and leisure; of village, city and nation. We thank You for offering us the chance to share in creation through the work of hand and brain; for the opportunity to plan and design, to manufacture and grow, to service and conserve, and to care for one another in the places where we work. We thank You for giving us special gifts and responsibilities, for enabling us to stand upright and make choices, for presenting us with opportunities to promote justice and truth. And because He shared with us our humanity and our world, we thank You for the gift of Your Son Jesus Christ, our beginning and our end, who carried out Your work to Your praise and glory and for the renewal of Your creation. So we make our prayer to You in His name, who died and rose again for us. Amen Prelude Paul Bechler, organist

Call To Worship How Beautiful Upon the Mountains – Harker Joel Mapes

Opening Hymn 36 Now Thank We All Our God 1. Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices, Who wondrous things hath done, in whom His world rejoices; Who from our mother’s arms hath blessed us on our way With countless gifts of love and still is ours today. 2. Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us And keep us in His grace and guide us when perplexed And free us from all ills in this world and the next! 3. All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, The Son, and Him who reigns with them in highest heaven: The one eternal God, whom earth and heav’n adore! For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. Order of Service for Holy Communion P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Sacrament of Holy Baptism - 10:30 (Following the Baptism, our worship continues with the Children’s Message) Child: Graham Andrew Warwick Parents: Kyle & Jessica Warwick Sponsors: Bryan Glesmann and Meghan Warwick

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

C: Who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. C: And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. P&C: O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner,

confess unto Thee all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended Thee and justly deserved Thy temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray Thee of Thy boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Children’s Message - 10:30 Old Testament Reading Ecclesiastes 5:18-20

(To Enjoy Your Work) This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them — for this is their lot. Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil — this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.

Epistle Reading 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13 (Warning Against Idleness)

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good. Response: Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah! Gospel Announcement Response: Glory be to Thee, O Lord! Gospel Reading Luke 10:38-42

(At the Home of Mary and Martha) As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Response: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. Confession of Faith - 9:00 The Nicene Creed

(10:30 service continues with the Sermon Hymn; Confession of Faith was made during the baptismal liturgy.)

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Sermon Hymn Earth and All Stars 1. Earth and all stars! Loud rushing planets! Sing to the Lord a new song! Oh, victory! Loud shouting army! Sing to the Lord a new song! Refrain: He has done marvelous things. I too will praise Him with a new song!

Page 7: ORDER OF WORSHIP Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

2. Hail, wind, and rain! Loud blowing snowstorm! Sing to the Lord a new song!

Flowers and trees! Loud rustling dry leaves! Sing to the Lord a new song! Refrain 3. Engines and steel! Loud pounding hammers! Sing to the Lord a new

song! Limestone and beams! Loud building workers! Sing to the Lord a new song!

Refrain Sermon Text: Luke 10:38-42
