ORCID, Researchers & Repositories
Belgian OA Week – Science on the Move
October 24, 2016
ORCID is an open, not-for-profit organization run by
and for the research community
It provides researchers with a unique identifier, an
ORCID iD, that reliably and clearly connects them with
their research contributions and affiliations
Hundreds of systems have now integrated ORCID iDs
– from grant application and manuscript submission to
CRIS and other research information management
systems, and more!
What is ORCID?
ORCID facts & figures
• ~2.65m registrants
• ~500 organizational members
• 65% research institutions
• 55% Europe, 30% N America
• ~250 live member integrations

Of the more than 6 million authors in a major journal citations
and abstracts database,+2/3 share last name and single initial
with another author. An ambiguous name in the same database
refers on average to 8 people. http://ands.org.au/newsletters/share_issue18.pdf

• ORCID iD is an identifier, enabling connection
researcher-outputs
• adding information makes it a kind of profile
• cf. LinkedIn, ResearchGate a.o.
• which to choose? ~ purpose
• sharing outputs => others
• enabling recognition => ORCID iD
• facilitating reuse =>ORCID iD
ORCID for institutions

• ORCID membership
• U Gent; Elektron consortium Flanders
• Allows integration of ORCID iD in all workflows
