Correct use

The cooktop gets hot when in use and remains hot for a whileafter being switched off. There is a danger of burning until theresidual heat indicators go out.

Oil and fat can overheat and catch fire. Do not leave the cooktopunattended when cooking with oil and fat. If it does ignite, do notattempt to put the flames out with water.Switch off the cooktop and use a suitable fire blanket, saucepan lid, damp towel or similar to smother the flames.

The cooking process has to be supervised. A short term cookingprocess has to be supervised continuously.

Flames could set the grease filters of a rangehood on fire. Do notflambé under a rangehood.

Spray canisters, aerosols and other inflammable substances canignite when heated. Therefore do not store such items or substancesin a drawer under the cooktop. Cutlery inserts must be heatresistant.

Do not heat an empty pan.

Do not heat up food in closed containers e.g. tins or sealed jarson the cooktop, as pressure can build up in the containers, causingthem to explode.

Do not cover the cooktop, e.g. with a cooktop cover, a cloth orprotective foil. The material could catch fire, shatter or melt if thecooktop is switched on by mistake or if residual heat is still present.

When the appliance is switched on either deliberately or bymistake, or when there is residual heat present, there is the risk ofany metal items left on the cooktop heating up, with the danger ofburning. Depending on the material, other items left on the cooktopcould also melt or catch fire. Damp pan lids might adhere to theceramic surface and be difficult to dislodge. Do not use theappliance as a resting place. Switch the cooking zones off after useand do not rely on the pan detector.

Warning and Safety instructions

11

You could burn yourself on the hot cooktop. Protect your handswith heat-resistant pot holders or oven gloves when handling hotpots and pans. Do not let them get wet or damp, as this causes heatto transfer through the material more quickly with the risk of scaldingor burning yourself.

When using an electrical appliance, e.g. a hand-held food mixer, near the cooktop, ensure that the cable of the electrical appliancecannot come into contact with the hot cooktop. The insulation on thecable could become damaged.

Grains of salt, sugar and sand (e.g. from cleaning vegetables) cancause scratches if they get under pan bases. Make sure that theceramic surface is clean before placing pans on it.

Even a light object can cause damage in certain circumstances.Do not drop anything on the ceramic surface.

Placing hot pans on the sensors and indicators could damage theelectronics underneath. Do not place hot pans on the sensors orindicators.

Do not allow solid or liquid sugar, or pieces of plastic or aluminiumfoil to get onto the cooktop when it is hot, as they can damage theceramic surface when it cools down. If this should occur, switch offthe appliance and scrape off all the sugar, plastic or aluminiumresidues whilst still hot, using a shielded scraper blade suitable foruse on glass. Wear oven gloves when doing this. Allow the ceramicsurface to cool down and then clean it with a suitable ceramiccooktop cleaning agent.

Pans which boil dry can cause damage to the ceramic glass. Donot leave the cooktop unattended whilst it is being used.

Only use pots and pans with smooth bases. Rough bases willscratch the ceramic glass.

Lift pans into position on the cooktop. Sliding them into place cancause scuffs and scratches.

Please stick the extra data plate forthe appliance supplied with thisdocumentation in the space providedin the “Service” section of thisbooklet. Alternatively, the additionallabel can be stuck near the applianceif the appliance markings are notvisible after installation.

Remove any protective wrapping andstickers (except the data plate).

Cleaning the cooktop for thefirst time Before using for the first time, clean

the cooktop with a damp cloth onlyand then wipe dry.

Switching on the cooktop forthe first timeThe metal components have aprotective coating which may give off aslight smell when heated up for the firsttime. The induction coils may also giveoff a slight smell for the first few hoursof operation. This smell will be lessnoticeable with each subsequent usebefore dissipating completely.

The smell and any vapours given off donot indicate a faulty connection orappliance and they are not hazardousto health.

Please note that the heating up timeon induction cooktops is significantlyshorter than on conventionalcooktops.

Page 25: Operating and installation instructions Induction …Miele cannot be held liable for injury or damage caused by non-compliance with these instructions. Keep these instructions in a

Induction

25

How it worksAn induction coil is located under eachcooking zone. The coil creates amagnetic field that reacts directly withthe base of the pan and heats it up. Thecooking zone itself is heated upindirectly by the heat given off by thepan.

An induction cooking zone only workswhen a pan with a magnetic base isplaced on it (see “Induction -Cookware”). Induction automaticallyrecognises the size of the pan.

Risk of burning due to hot items! When the cooktop is switched on,either deliberately or by mistake, orwhen there is residual heat present, there is a risk of metal items placedon the cooktop heating up.Do not use the cooktop as a restingplace for anything else. After use, switch the cooktop off withthe  sensor control.

Cookware

Suitable pans

– stainless steel pans with a base thatcan be magnetised

– enamelled steel pans

– cast iron pans

Please be aware that the properties ofthe pan base can affect the evennesswith which the food heats up (e.g. whenmaking pancakes). The base of the panmust be able to distribute the heatevenly. A sandwich base made ofstainless steel is particularly suitable.

Unsuitable pans

– stainless steel pans with a basewhich cannot be magnetised

– aluminium or copper pans

– glass, ceramic or earthenware potsand pans

Testing cookware

To test whether a pot or pan is suitablefor use on an induction cooktop, hold amagnet to the base of the pan inseveral different places. If the magnetsticks, the pan is generally suitable.

Induction

26

No pan/unsuitable pan display

The  symbol flashes alternately withthe power level selected in one of thecooking zone displays

– if the cooking zone has beenswitched on without a pan in place,or if the pan is unsuitable (non-magnetic base).

– if the diameter of the base of the panis too small.

– if the pan is taken off the cookingzone while it is switched on.

If a suitable pan is placed on thecooking zone within 3 minutes,  will goout and you can continue as normal.

If no pan or an unsuitable pan is placedon the cooking zone, the cooking zonewill switch off automatically after3 minutes.

Useful tips

– To make optimum use of the cookingzones, choose pans with a suitablebase diameter (see “Overview -Cooking zone data”). If the pan is toosmall it will not be recognised.

– Use only pots and pans with smoothbases. Rough bases can scratch theceramic glass.

– Always lift the pans to move them. This will help prevent scratching. Ifany scratches do appear as a resultof pans being pushed around, thiswill not affect the function of thecooktop. These scratches are normalsigns of use and are not grounds formaking a complaint.

– Please note that the maximumdiameter quoted by manufacturersoften refers to the diameter of the toprim of the pot or pan. The diameter ofthe base (generally smaller) is moreimportant.

– Where possible, use pans withvertically straight sides. If a pan hasangular sides, induction also acts onthe sides of the pan. The sides of thepan may discolour or the coatingmay peel off.

NoisesWhen using an induction cooking zone, the following noises can occur in thepan, depending on what it is made ofand how it has been constructed.

On the higher power settings, theappliance might buzz. This willdecrease or cease altogether when thepower setting is reduced.

If the pan base is made of layers ofdifferent materials (e.g. in a sandwichedbase), it might emit a cracking sound.

Whistling might occur if linked zones(see “Operation - Booster”) are beingused at the same time, and the pansalso have bases made of layers ofdifferent materials.

You might hear a clicking sound fromthe electronic switches, especially onlower power settings.

You might hear a whirring sound whenthe cooling fan switches on. It switcheson to protect the electronics when thecooktop is being used intensively. Thefan may continue to run after thecooktop has been switched off.

Tips on saving energy

28

– Use a lid whenever possible tominimise heat loss.

– Select a smaller pan when cookingsmall quantities. A smaller pan usesless energy than a larger pan withvery little in it.

– Cook with as little water as possible.

– Once food has come to the boil orthe oil in the pan is hot enough forfrying, reduce the heat to a lowersetting.

– Use a pressure cooker to reducecooking times.

These settings should only be taken as a guide. The power of the induction coils will varydepending on the size and material of the pan. For this reason, it is possible that thesettings will need to be adjusted slightly to suit your pans. As you use the cooktop, you willget to know which settings suit your pans best. When using new pans that you are notfamiliar with, set the power level below the one specified.

For safety reasons, when switching the appliance on, theOn/Off  sensor needs to be touchedfor a little longer than the other sensors. Each time you touch a sensor, anacoustic signal sounds.

When the cooktop is switched off, onlythe printed sensor control symbols andnumbers on the keybank for setting thepower levels are visible. More sensorcontrols light up when the cooktop isswitched on.

In order to set or alter a power level, thecooking zones must be “active”. Toactivate a cooking zone, touch theindicator of the relevant cooking zone. The relevant cooking zone indicator willbegin to flash when touched. While theindicator is flashing, you can set oradjust the power level or the duration.Exception: If only one of the cookingzones is in operation, you can alter thepower level without activating thecooking zone.

Malfunction due to dirty and/orcovered sensor controls. If the sensor controls are dirty orcovered this could cause them to failto react, to activate a functioninadvertently or even to switch theappliance off automatically (see“Safety features – Safety switch-off”). Placing hot pans on the sensorcontrols/indicators can damage theelectronic unit underneath.Keep the sensor controls andindicators clean.Do not place anything over thesensor control or indicators.Do not place hot pans over thesensor controls or indicators.

Problem solving guide

50

With the help of the following guide, minor faults in the performance of theappliance, some of which may result from incorrect operation, can be remediedwithout contacting Miele. This will save you time and money because you won'tneed a service call.

Please note that a call-out charge will be applied to unnecessary service visitswhere the problem could have been rectified as described in these operatinginstructions.

Problem Possible cause and remedy

The cooktop or cookingzones do not switch on.

There is no power to the cooktop. Check if the circuit breaker has tripped. Contact

an electrician or Miele (for the minimum fuserating, see data plate).

There may be a technical fault. Disconnect the appliance from the mains

electricity supply for approx. 1 minute. To do this:– switch off at the wall socket and withdraw the

plug, or– switch off at the residual current device.

If, after switching the circuit breaker or residualcurrent device back on, the appliance will still notswitch on, contact a qualified electrician or Miele.

A smell and vapours aregiven off when the newappliance is being used.

The metal components have a protective coating. When the appliance is used for the first time, thiscauses a smell and possibly also vapour. Thematerial from which the induction coils are made alsogives off a smell in the first few hours of operation. This smell will be less noticeable with eachsubsequent use before dissipating completely. Thesmell and any vapours given off do not indicate afaulty connection or appliance and they are nothazardous to health.

In the cooking zonedisplay, the  symbolwill flash alternatelywith the selected powerlevel or .
