The electrical safety of this appliance can only be guaranteedwhen continuity is complete between it and an effective earthingsystem. It is most important that this basic safety requirement ispresent and tested regularly and, where there is any doubt, thehousehold wiring system should be inspected by a qualifiedelectrician.

Reliable and safe operation of this rangehood can only be assuredif it has been connected to the mains electricity supply.

The connection data (voltage and frequency) on the data plate ofthe rangehood must match the mains electricity supply in order toavoid the risk of damage to the rangehood.Compare this before connecting the appliance to the mainselectricity. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

Do not connect the appliance to the mains electricity supply by amulti-socket unit or an extension lead. Extension leads are a firehazard and do not guarantee the required safety of the appliance.

EXT/EXTA model rangehoods are connected to their externalmotor using a special connection cable and plug connectors. These appliances may only be combined with a Miele externalmotor.

For safety reasons, this appliance may only be used after it hasbeen built in.

This rangehood must not be installed and operated in mobileinstallations (e.g. on a ship).

Tampering with electrical connections or components andmechanical parts is highly dangerous to the user and can causeoperational faults. Only open the housing as described in the instructions given in theinstallation sheet and in the “Cleaning and care” section of thisbooklet. Under no circumstances should any other parts of thehousing be opened.

Using at the same time as other heating appliances that depend on the airfrom the room

Danger of toxic fumes!Great care should be taken when using the rangehood in the sameroom or the same area of the house as another heating appliancethat depends on the air from the room.Such heating appliances draw in air from the room and ductexhaust gases out through a chimney or extraction ducting. Theyinclude gas, oil, wood and coal-fired boilers and heaters, continuous flow or other water heaters, gas cooktops and ovens.

The rangehood draws in air from the kitchen and fromneighbouring rooms. This applies to the following modes ofoperation:- extraction mode, - extraction mode with an external motor, - recirculation mode with a recirculation box installed outside theroom.

If there is insufficient air, an underpressure will occur. The heatingappliance may be starved of oxygen. This impairs combustion.Harmful gases could be drawn from the chimney or extractionducting back into the room. This could have potentially fatal consequences. Risk of death!

Page 9: DA 64x8 W en-AU 11559140-01...Miele cannot be held liable for injury or damage caused by non-compliance with these instructions. Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them

Warning and Safety instructions

9

In order to ensure safe operation and to prevent gases given off bya heating appliance from being drawn back into the room, whenthe rangehood and the heater are both operated simultaneously,an underpressure in the room of 0.04 mbar (4 Pa) is the maximumpermissible.

Sufficient ventilation can be maintained by air inlets which cannotbe blocked, e.g. in windows, doors and outside wall vents. Thediameter of the inlet openings must enable sufficient ventilation. Aventilation brick alone is not generally sufficient to ensure safeventilation.

The overall ventilation condition of the dwelling must be taken intoaccount. If in any doubt, the advice of a competent builder or, forgas, a qualified gas fitter (registered with an official gas safetybody in accordance with national safety regulations) must besought.

If the rangehood is being operated in recirculation mode, wherebythe air is redirected into the room in which it is installed, the aboverestrictions do not apply.

Correct use

Open flames are a fire hazard!Never use an open flame under the rangehood. To avoid the dangerof fire, do not flambé or grill over an open flame. When switched on,the rangehood could draw flames into the filter. Kitchen greasedeposits could ignite.

The rangehood can become damaged when exposed to excessiveheat.

- When using the rangehood over a gas cooktop, ensure that anyburners in use are always covered by a pan. Switch the cookingzone off when a pan is removed, even for a short time.

- Select a pan which is suitable for the size of the burner.

- Regulate the flame so that it does not burn up the sides of thepan.

- Avoid overheating the pan (e.g. when cooking with a wok).

Always switch the rangehood on when a cooking zone is in use, otherwise condensation may collect in the rangehood, which couldcause corrosion.

Overheated oil and fat can ignite, causing fire damage to therangehood. When cooking with oil or fat, chip pans and deep fat fryers etc., donot leave the pans unattended. Similarly, never leave an open grillunattended when grilling.

Warning and Safety instructions

11

Do not use the rangehood without the filters in place. This wayyou will avoid the risk of grease and dirt getting into the applianceand hindering its smooth operation.

The rangehood can get very hot during cooking due to heat risingfrom the cooktop.Do not touch the housing or the grease filters until the rangehoodhas cooled down.

Correct installation

Refer to the cooktop manufacturer's instructions as to whether arangehood may be operated above the cooktop.

Safety regulations prohibit the fitting of a rangehood over solidfuel stoves.

An insufficient safety distance between the cooktop and therangehood can result in damage to the rangehood. The minimum safety distances between the top of the cooktop andthe bottom of the rangehood given in the “Installation” section of thisbooklet must be observed, unless the cooktop manufacturer statesthat a greater safety distance is required. If more than one cooking appliance is fitted beneath the rangehood, and they have different minimum safety distances to the rangehood, select the greater distance.

The information provided in “Installation” must be observed wheninstalling the rangehood.

There may be a risk of injury due to protruding parts and sharpedges.Wear gloves that offer protection against cuts during assembly.

All ducting, pipework and fittings must be of non-flammablematerial and comply with all relevant national and local buildingregulations.

Description of the functions

16

Depending on the model of therangehood, the following options areavailable:

Air extraction mode

The cooking vapours are drawn in bythe rangehood. The air is passed via theedge extraction panel through thegrease filter and cleaned. It is thendirected outside.

Non-return flap

A non-return flap fitted in the exhaustair system ensures that when therangehood is not in operation the ductis closed and no exchange of room airand outside air can take place. The flap is closed when the rangehoodis switched off. When the rangehood is switched on,the non-return flap opens for thecooking vapours to be blown directlyoutside.

If the on-site exhaust air system doesnot have a non-return flap, one issupplied with the rangehood. It must befitted in the exhaust socket on themotor unit.

Recirculation mode

The air is drawn in via the edgeextraction panel and cleaned first by thegrease filter and then by a charcoalfilter. The air is then circulated back intothe kitchen.

Operation with an externalmotor(EXT/EXTA model rangehoods)

Rangehoods designed for use with anexternal motor have to be connected toa Miele external motor located in aposition of your choice outside theroom. The external motor is connectedto the rangehood by means of a controlcable and is operated via Con@ctivty orby the controls on the rangehood.

Page 24: DA 64x8 W en-AU 11559140-01...Miele cannot be held liable for injury or damage caused by non-compliance with these instructions. Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them

Operation (automatic mode)

24

When Con@ctivity is active, therangehood always operates inautomatic mode (see “Before using forthe first time – Setting upCon@ctivity”).

If you wish to manually operate therangehood, see “Operation (manualmode) – Cooking without Con@ctivity”.

Cooking with Con@ctivity(automatic mode) Switch on a cooking zone at any

power level.

The cooktop lighting will come on.

After a few seconds the fan will switchon, first at power level 2, then it willswitch immediately to power level 1.

The rangehood selects the power levelautomatically during cooking.

This is determined by the total output ofthe cooktop, i.e. the number of cookingzones in operation and the power levelsselected.

If you select a higher power level on thecooktop or are using several cookingzones, the rangehood will switch to ahigher power level.

When you reduce the power level onthe cooktop or the number of cookingzones being used, the rangehoodpower level will also be reduced.

Examples for power levels 1 to B

Reaction timeThe rangehood reacts with a slightdelay because altering the power levelon the cooktop does not immediatelyresult in a reduction or increase incooking vapours.

Because the cooktop transmits theinformation to the rangehood atintervals, this can also cause delays.

The reaction can vary from a fewseconds to a few minutes.

Page 25: DA 64x8 W en-AU 11559140-01...Miele cannot be held liable for injury or damage caused by non-compliance with these instructions. Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them

Operation (automatic mode)

25

Cooking process For example, you switch on a cooking

zone at the highest power level toheat a pan for frying. After approx.10 seconds to 4 minutes, you thenreduce the power level (60 secondsto 5 minutes for a radiant cooktop).

The rangehood recognises a cookingprocess.

The rangehood switches itself on andwhen the cooktop power level has beenreduced, the rangehood switches topower level 3 and remains at that levelfor approx. 5 minutes.

After that the rangehood power level isdetermined automatically by theCon@ctivity function.

You can select another power levelmanually before then.

Switching off Switch off all cooking zones.

The rangehood fan will reduce its powerlevel in stages over the next fewminutes and will then switch itself off.

This helps to neutralise any lingeringvapours and odours in the air.

- From the Booster setting, the fanswitches immediately to level 3.

- From level 3, it will switch to level 2after approx. 1 minute.

- From level 2, it will switch to level 1after 2 minutes.

- After 2 minutes at Level 1, the fanswitches itself off.

- After another 30 seconds, thecooktop lighting switches off.

The cooking process is then finished.

Energy saving tips

32

This rangehood operates very efficientlyand economically. The following willhelp you to save even more energywhen using it:

- Ensure that there is sufficientventilation in the kitchen whencooking. In extraction mode, if thereis insufficient air flow the rangehoodcannot operate efficiently and thiscauses increased operating noiselevels.

- Always cook with the lowest possiblesetting. This produces fewer cookingvapours, so you can use a lowerrangehood power level and thereforebenefit from reduced energyconsumption.

- Clean or change the filters at regularintervals. Heavily soiled filters reduceperformance, increase the risk of fireand are unhygienic.

- Use the Con@ctivity function. Therangehood will switch on and offautomatically. The rangehood willselect the optimum power level forthe cooking you are doing, whichensures low energy consumption.

- If you are operating the rangehoodmanually, please note the following:

– Check the power level selected onthe rangehood. A low power levelis usually sufficient. Only use theBooster setting when necessary.

– When a large volume of cookingvapours are being produced, switch to a high power level ingood time. This is more efficientthan operating the rangehood forlonger to try to capture cookingvapours which have already beendistributed throughout the kitchen.

– Make sure that you switch therangehood off after use. If cooking vapours and odours stillneed to be removed from thekitchen air after cooking, use therun-on function. The fan will switchoff automatically after the selectedrun-on time.

Before carrying out anymaintenance or cleaning, therangehood must be disconnectedfrom the electricity supply (see“Warning and Safety instructions”).

Housing

General

The surfaces and controls aresusceptible to scratches andabrasion. Please observe the followingcleaning instructions.

All external surfaces and controls canbe cleaned using warm water with asmall amount of washing-up liquidapplied with a well wrung-out softsponge or cloth.

After cleaning, wipe the surfaces dryusing a soft cloth.

Do not use:

- cleaning agents containing soda, acids, chlorides or solvents,

- abrasive cleaning agents, e.g.powder cleaners or cream cleanersand abrasive sponges, as well as potscourers or sponges which havebeen used previously with abrasivecleaning agents. These will damagethe surface material.

Important for appliances withlacquered casing

Minor scratches on the surface areinevitable when cleaning the casing;they may be visible depending on thelighting in the kitchen.

Important for appliances with glasssurfaces

Glass surfaces can be cleaned usinga proprietary non-abrasive cleaningagent designed specifically for use onglass.

Grease filter and edgeextraction panel

Fire hazard! An oversaturated grease filter is a firehazard.Clean the grease filter at regularintervals.

The edge extraction panel and the re-usable metal grease filter in theappliance remove solid particles(grease, dust, etc.) from the kitchenvapours, preventing soiling of therangehood.

The grease filters and the panel must becleaned at regular intervals.

A heavily soiled grease filter hindersair extraction and will lead toincreased levels of soiling in therangehood and in the kitchen.

Grease filter cleaning intervals

Accumulated grease solidifies over alonger period of time and makescleaning more difficult. The grease filtershould therefore be cleaned at leastevery 3 to 4 weeks.

The operating hours control remindsyou to regularly clean the grease filtersby illuminating the grease filtersymbol .

You can set the operating hours counterinterval to suit the type of cooking youdo (see “Operation (automatic andmanual modes)”).

Removing the panel and grease filter

The panel and grease filter canfall out when you are handling them. This can result in damage.Make sure you hold the panel andthe grease filter securely at all timeswhen handling them.

Pull the panel out of the holder at thebottom, press it back a little at thetop, then unhook it and carefully lift itout.

Cleaning the grease filter by hand

Clean the grease filter with a softnylon brush in a mild solution of hotwater and a small amount ofwashing-up liquid. Do not useundiluted washing-up liquid.

Unsuitable cleaning agents

Unsuitable cleaning agents can causedamage to the surface of the filters ifused regularly.Do not use:

- cleaning agents containing descalingagents,

- powder cleaners or cream cleaners,

- aggressive all-purpose cleaningagents or spray cleaners for grease,

- oven sprays.

Cleaning the grease filter in thedishwasher

Place the grease filter upright orslightly inclined in the lower basket.Ensure the spray arm is notobstructed.

Use a standard householddishwasher detergent.

Select a dishwasher programme witha wash temperature between 50 °Cand 65 °C.

Depending on the detergent used, cleaning the grease filter in adishwasher can cause permanentdiscolouration to the internal surfacesof the filter. This will not affect thefunctioning of the grease filter in anyway.

After cleaning

After cleaning, leave the grease filterto dry on an absorbent surface beforerefitting it.

When removing the panel and thegrease filter for cleaning, also cleanoff any residues of oil or fat from thenow accessible housing to preventthe risk of these catching fire.

Installation recommendations- Account should also be taken of the

height of the person who will beusing the rangehood most often. They should have sufficient space towork comfortably at the cooktop, andbe able to reach the rangehoodcontrols with ease.

- If positioned too high, extraction willbe inefficient.

- To achieve optimum vapourextraction, the rangehood must bepositioned centrally over the cooktop, not to the side.

- The cooktop should be no wider thanthe rangehood and, if possible, itshould be narrower, especially forsafety distances greater than750 mm.

- The installation area must be easilyaccessible. The rangehood should beeasily accessible and easy todismantle in the event that service isrequired. This should be taken intoconsideration when planning theposition of cupboards, shelves, ceilings or features in the vicinity ofthe rangehood.

Connection for air extraction

Before installation, it is importantto read the information given on thefollowing pages as well as the“Appliance dimensions” and the“Warning and Safety instructions” atthe beginning of this booklet. This isparticularly crucial when using therangehood at the same time as aheating appliance that relies onoxygen from the same room, whichcould result in the build-up of toxicfumes. The rangehood should be installedaccording to local and nationalbuilding regulations. Seek approvalfrom the building inspector wherenecessary.

Only use smooth pipes or flexibleducting made from approved non-flammable materials for exhaustducting.

When using an external motor, makesure that the exhaust ducting issufficiently rigid. The external motorcan cause an underpressure whichcan result in the exhaust ductingdistorting.

To achieve the greatest possible airextraction with the lowest noise level, please note the following:

- The diameter of the exhaust ductingshould not be less than 150 mm.

- If flat ducting is being used, thecross-sectional area must not besmaller than the cross-sectional areaof the exhaust connection.

- The exhaust ducting should be asshort and straight as possible.

- Only use wide radius bends.

- The exhaust ducting must not bekinked or compressed.

- Ensure that all connections arestrong and airtight.

- If the ducting has flaps, these mustbe opened when the rangehood isswitched on.

Remember that any constriction ofthe airflow will reduce extractionperformance and increase operatingnoise.

If the exhaust is ducted through anoutside wall, a telescopic wall vent ora roof vent (available as an optionalaccessory) is recommended.

If the exhaust air is to be ducted intoa vent flue, the ducting must bedirected in the flow direction of theflue.

If the flue is used by severalventilation units, the cross-section ofthe flue must be large enough.

Where ducting is horizontal, it mustbe laid to slope away at at least 1 cmper metre. This is to ensure thatcondensate cannot drain back intothe rangehood.

Page 45: DA 64x8 W en-AU 11559140-01...Miele cannot be held liable for injury or damage caused by non-compliance with these instructions. Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them

Installation

*INSTALLATION*

45

If the exhaust ducting is to runthrough rooms, ceiling space etc.there may be great variations intemperature between the differentareas. The problem of condensationwill need to be addressed. Theexhaust ducting will need to besuitably insulated.

Miele will not accept warranty claimsfor any functional defects or damagecaused by inadequate ducting.

Condensate trap

In addition to insulating the exhaustducting, we recommend that a suitablecondensate trap is also installed tocollect and evaporate any condensatewhich may occur.Condensate traps are available for125 mm or 150 mm ducting.

A condensate trap can only be fitted inextraction ducting which is directedupwards out of the rangehood.

When installing a condensate trap, ensure that it is positioned verticallyand, if possible, directly above the

exhaust socket. The arrow on the housing indicatesthe direction of airflow.

The condensate trap is integrated inrangehoods which are designed to beconnected to an external motor (EXT/EXTA models).

Silencer

To achieve even further reductions innoise levels, a special silencer (optionalaccessory) can be fitted in the ductingsystem.

Air extraction mode

The silencer not only reduces noisefrom the motor outside the house, butalso sounds from outside (e.g. trafficnoise). For this reason, the silencermust be positioned as close as possibleto the ducting exit .

Page 46: DA 64x8 W en-AU 11559140-01...Miele cannot be held liable for injury or damage caused by non-compliance with these instructions. Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them

*INSTALLATION*

46

Air extraction with external motor

To minimise noise from the motor in thekitchen, the silencer should bepositioned in front of the external motor if possible, or, if the ducting is long, above the exhaust connection insidethe rangehood . In the case of anexternal motor located inside the house, fitting a silencer behind the externalmotor reduces the noise of the motoroutside the house.

Electrical connection

Installation, repairs and otherwork by unqualified persons couldbe dangerous. The manufacturercannot be held liable forunauthorised work. All electrical work must beundertaken by a suitably qualifiedand competent person in strictaccordance with current national andlocal safety and building coderegulations.Ensure power is not supplied to theappliance until after installation orrepair work has been carried out.

This rangehood must only beconnected to a properly installedelectrical circuit (AC 230V, 50Hz).

The electrical installation must complywith national and local safety andbuilding code regulations.

For extra safety, it is advisable toprotect the appliance with a suitableresidual current device (RCD) with a tripcurrent of 30 mA.

It is advisable to connect this appliancevia a suitable isolator which complieswith national and local safetyregulations to make it easy todisconnect for servicing purposes. Thesocket and switch must be easilyaccessible after the appliance has beeninstalled.

Alternatively it can be hard-wired.

If the mains socket and switch are notaccessible after the appliance has beeninstalled, or if it is hard-wired, anadditional means of disconnection mustbe provided for all poles whichcomplies with national and local safetyregulations. There must be an all-polecontact gap of at least 3 mm in theswitch. This includes the switch, fuses andrelays.

The connection data is given on thedata plate (See “Service”). Ensure thatthis data matches the household mainssupply.
