Correct use

The cooktop gets hot when in use and remains hot for a whileafter being switched off. There is a danger of burning until theresidual heat indicators go out.

Oil and fat can overheat and catch fire. Do not leave the cooktopunattended when cooking with oil and fat. If it does ignite, do notattempt to put the flames out with water.Switch off the cooktop and use a suitable fire blanket, saucepan lid, damp towel or similar to smother the flames.

Flames could set the grease filters of a rangehood on fire. Do notflambé under a rangehood.

Spray canisters, aerosols and other inflammable substances canignite when heated. Therefore do not store such items or substancesin a drawer under the cooktop. Cutlery inserts must be heat-resistant.

Do not heat an empty pan.

Do not heat up food in closed containers e.g. tins or sealed jarson the cooktop, as pressure can build up in the containers, causingthem to explode.

Do not cover the cooktop, e.g. with a cooktop cover, a cloth orprotective foil. The material could catch fire, shatter or melt if thecooktop is switched on by mistake or if residual heat is still present.

When the appliance is switched on either deliberately or bymistake, or when there is residual heat present, there is the risk ofany metal items left on the cooktop heating up, with the danger ofburning. Depending on the material, other items left on the cooktopcould also melt or catch fire. Damp pan lids might adhere to theceramic surface and be difficult to dislodge. Do not use theappliance as a resting place. Switch the cooking zones off after useand do not rely on the pan detector.

You could burn yourself on the hot cooktop. Protect your handswith heat-resistant pot holders or gloves when handling hot pots andpans. Do not let them get wet or damp, as this causes heat totransfer through the material more quickly with the risk of scalding orburning yourself.

When using an electrical appliance, e.g. a hand-held food mixer, near the cooktop, ensure that the cable of the electrical appliancecannot come into contact with the hot cooktop. The insulation on thecable could become damaged.

Grains of salt, sugar and sand (e.g. from cleaning vegetables) cancause scratches if they get under pan bases. Make sure that theceramic surface is clean before placing pans on it.

Even a light object can cause damage in certain circumstances.Do not drop anything on the ceramic surface.

Placing hot pans on the sensors and indicators could damage theelectronics underneath. Do not place hot pans on the sensors orindicators.

Do not allow solid or liquid sugar, or pieces of plastic or aluminiumfoil to get onto the cooking zones when they are hot, as they candamage the ceramic surface when it cools down. If this shouldoccur, switch off the appliance and scrape off all the sugar, plastic oraluminium residues whilst still hot, using a shielded scraper blade.Wear oven gloves. Allow the cooking zones to cool down and cleanthem with a suitable ceramic cooktop cleaning agent.

Pans which boil dry can cause damage to the ceramic glass. Donot leave the cooktop unattended whilst it is being used.

Only use pots and pans with smooth bases. Rough bases willscratch the ceramic glass.

Lift pans into position on the cooktop. Sliding them into place cancause scuffs and scratches.

Induction heating works extremely quickly. Therefore, the base ofthe pan could heat up to the temperature at which oil or fat self-ignites within a very short time. Do not leave the cooktop unattendedwhilst it is being used.

Heat oil or fat for a maximum of one minute. Do not use theBooster function to heat oil or fat.

For people fitted with a heart pacemaker: Please note that thearea immediately surrounding the cooktop is electromagneticallycharged. It is very unlikely to affect a pacemaker. However, if in anydoubt, consult the manufacturer of the pacemaker or your doctor.

To prevent damage to items which are susceptible toelectromagnetic fields, e.g. credit cards, digital storage devices, pocket calculators, etc., do not leave them in the immediate vicinityof the cooktop.

Metal utensils stored in a drawer under the cooktop can becomehot if the appliance is used intensively for a long time. Do not storeany metal items or utensils in a drawer under the cooktop.

This cooktop is fitted with a cooling fan. If a drawer is fitteddirectly underneath the cooktop, ensure that there is sufficient spacebetween the drawer and its contents and the underside of theappliance in order to ensure sufficient ventilation of the cooktop. Donot store pointed or small items or paper in the drawer. They couldget in through the ventilation slots or be sucked into the housing bythe fan and damage the fan or impair cooling.

Do not use two pans on a cooking zone, extended zone orPowerFlex zone at the same time.

If the pan only partially covers the cooking zone, the handle couldbecome very hot.Ensure that you always place the pan in the middle of the cookingzone.

Please stick the extra data plate forthe appliance supplied with thisdocumentation in the space providedin the "Service" section of thisbooklet. Alternatively, the additionallabel can be stuck near the applianceif the appliance markings are notvisible after installation.

Remove any protective wrapping andstickers.

Cleaning the cooktop for thefirst time Before using for the first time, clean

the cooktop with a damp cloth onlyand then wipe dry.

Switching on the cooktop forthe first timeThe metal components have aprotective coating which may give off aslight smell when heated up for the firsttime. The induction coils may also giveoff a slight smell for the first few hoursof operation. This smell will be lessnoticeable with each subsequent usebefore dissipating completely.

The smell and any vapours given off donot indicate a faulty connection orappliance and they are not hazardousto health.

Please note that the heating up timeon induction cooktops is very muchshorter than on conventionalcooktops.

Induction

22

The induction principleAn induction coil is located under eachcooking zone. When a cooking zone isswitched on, this coil creates amagnetic field which impacts directlyon the base of the pan and heats it up.The cooking zone itself is heated upindirectly by the heat given off by thepan.

An induction cooking zone only workswhen a ferromagnetic pan is placed onit (see "Pans"). The induction cookingzone automatically recognises the sizeof the pan.

The symbol flashes alternately withthe power setting selected in one of thecooking zones

– if it is switched on without a pan inplace, or if the pan is unsuitable (non-magnetic base),

– if the diameter of the base of the panis too small,

– if the pan is taken off the cookingzone when it is switched on.

If a suitable pan is placed on thecooking zone within 3 minutes, will goout and you can continue as normal.

If no pan or an unsuitable pan is placedon the cooking zone, the cooking zonewill switch off automatically after 3minutes.

When the appliance is switchedon either deliberately or by mistake,or when there is residual heatpresent, there is the risk of any metalitems placed on the cooktop (e.g.cutlery) heating up.Danger of burning!Do not use the cooktop as a restingplace for items. Switch the cookingzones off after use with theappropriate sensor and do not relyon the pan detector.

23

NoisesWhen using an induction cooking zone, the following noises can occur in thepan, depending on what it is made ofand how it has been constructed.

On the higher power settings, it mightbuzz. This will decrease or ceasealtogether when the power setting isreduced.

If the pan base is made of layers ofdifferent materials (e.g. in a sandwichedbase), it might emit a cracking sound.

Whistling might occur if linked zones(see "Booster") are being used at thesame time, and the pans also havebases made of layers of differentmaterials.

You might hear a clicking sound fromthe electronic switches, especially onlower power settings.

You might hear a whirring sound whenthe cooling fan switches on. It switcheson to protect the electronics when thecooktop is being used intensively. Thefan may continue to run after theappliance has been switched off.

PansSuitable pans:

– Stainless steel pans with a base thatcan be magnetised.

– Enamelled steel pans.

– Cast iron pans.

Unsuitable pans:

– Stainless steel pans without amagnetic base.

– Aluminium and copper pans.

– Glass, ceramic or earthenware potsand pans.

To test whether a pot or pan is suitablefor use on an induction cooktop, hold amagnet to the base of the pan. If themagnet sticks, the pan is suitable. If anunsuitable pan is used, the  symbolwill flash alternately with the powersetting selected.

Please be aware that the properties ofthe pan base can affect the evennesswith which food heats up in the pan.

– To make optimum use of the cookingzones, choose pans with diameterslarger than the innermost markingsbut smaller than the outermostmarkings (see "Cooking zone data").If the diameter of the pan is smallerthan the innermost marking, the panwill not be recognised and will flashalternately with the power settingselected.

– Do not use pots and pans with baseswith pronounced edges or ridges. These could scratch or scour thecooktop surface permanently.

– Lift pans into position on thecooktop. Sliding them into place cancause scuffs and scratches.

– Often the maximum diameter quotedby manufacturers refers to thediameter of the top rim of the pot orpan. The diameter of the base(generally smaller) is more important.

– Where possible, use pans withvertically straight sides. If a pan hasangular sides, induction also acts onthe sides of the pan. The sides of thepan may discolour or the coatingmay peel off.

Page 25: Operating and installation instructions Ceramic cooktops ... · Induction heating works extremely quickly. Therefore, the base of the pan could heat up to the temperature at which

Tips on saving energy

25

– Use a lid whenever possible tominimise heat loss.

– Select a smaller pan when cookingsmall quantities. A smaller pan usesless energy than a larger pan withvery little in it.

– Cook with as little water as possible.

– Once food has come to the boil orthe oil in the pan is hot enough forfrying, reduce the heat to a lowersetting.

– Use a pressure cooker to reducecooking times.

These settings should only be taken as a guide. The power of the induction coils will varydepending on the size and material of the pan. For this reason, it is possible that thesettings will need to be adjusted slightly to suit your pans. As you use the cooktop, you willget to know which settings suit your pans best. When using new pans that you are notfamiliar with, set the power level below the one specified.

Operation

27

Operating principlesThe glass ceramic cooktop is equippedwith electronic sensor controls whichreact to finger contact. For safetyreasons, in order to switch the cooktopon, the On/Off  sensor needs to betouched for a little longer than the othersensors. A tone sounds each time a sensor istouched.

In order to set or alter a power level or aduration, the cooking zones and thetimer must be "active". To activate acooking zone or the timer, touch thesensor for selecting the relevantcooking zone or the timer. After youhave touched the sensor, the relevantcooking zone or the timer display willstart to flash. The cooking zone or thetimer is "active" whilst the display isflashing and you can set a power levelor a duration.Exception: If only one of the cookingzones is in use, you can alter the powerlevel without activating the cookingzone.

Malfunction due to dirty and/orcovered sensors:If the sensors are dirty or covered, this could cause them to fail to react,to activate a function or even toswitch the cooktop off automatically(see "Safety switch-off"). Placing hotpans on the sensors/indicators candamage the electronic unitunderneath.Keep the sensors and indicatorsclean and do not place anything ontop of them. Do not place hot panson them.

If the manufacturer's instructions arenot available for the rangehood, aminimum safety distance of 600 mmmust be maintained.

For any flammable objects, e.g. utensilrails, wall units etc., a minimum safetydistance of 600 mm must bemaintained between these objects andthe highest part of the cooktop below.

When two or more appliances whichhave different safety distances areinstalled together below arangehood, you should observe thegreatest safety distance.

Safety distances to the sidesand back of the applianceIdeally the cooktop should be installedwith plenty of space on either side. There may be a wall at the rear or a tallunit or wall on one side (right or left),taking into account the distancesbelow. On the other side, however, notall unit or wall should stand closer than300 mm to the edge of the cooktop. Before installing the cooktop, checkthat the below clearance requirementsare met.

Minimum horizontal distance from theback edge of the cooktop to acombustible surface:50 mm.

Minimum horizontal distance from theright edge of the cooktop to acombustible surface:50 mm.

Minimum horizontal distance from theleft edge of the cooktop to acombustible surface:50 mm.

Minimum safety distancesunderneath the cooktopTo ensure sufficient ventilation to thecooktop, a certain gap must be leftbetween the underside of the cooktopand any oven, interim shelf or drawer.

The minimum gap between theunderside of the cooktop and

– the top of an oven is 15 mm.

– the top of an interim shelf is 15 mm.

– the base of a drawer is 75 mm.

Interim shelfIt is not necessary to fit an interim shelfunderneath the cooktop but one maybe fitted if you wish.

Leave a gap of 10 mm at the back ofthe shelf to accommodate the cable.Miele recommends a gap at the front ofthe shelf of 20 mm to ensure goodventilation.

Installation notes

Seal between the cooktop and theworktop

Do not use sealant between thecooktop and the worktop. This couldresult in damage to the cooktop orthe worktop if the cooktop everneeds to be removed for servicing. The sealing strip under the edge ofthe top part of the applianceprovides a sufficient seal for theworktop.

Tiled worktop

Grout lines  and the hatched areaunderneath the cooktop frame must besmooth and even. If they are not, thecooktop will not sit flush with theworktop and the sealing stripunderneath the cooktop will not providea good seal between the cooktop andthe worktop.

Installation

Preparing the worktop

Make the worktop cut-out as shownin "Building-in dimensions". Observethe safety distances (see "Safetydistances").

Seal the cut surfaces on woodenworktops with a suitable sealant toavoid swelling caused by moisture. The sealant must be heat-resistant.

Make sure the sealant does notcome into contact with the topsurface of the worktop.

The seal underneath the cooktop willhold it securely in the cut-out. Any gapbetween the frame and worktop willreduce with time.

Connecting the mains connectioncable to the appliance

The mains connection cable must beconnected by a suitably qualified andcompetent electrician in accordancewith current local and national safetyregulations.

Follow the instructions in the wiringdiagram (see "Electrical connection -Wiring diagram").

Installing the cooktop

Feed the mains connection cabledown through the cut-out.

Place the cooktop centrally in thecut-out. When doing this, make surethat the seal under the cooktop sitsflush with the worktop on all sides. This is important to ensure aneffective seal all round.

Do not use any additional sealant(e.g. silicone).

If the seal does not meet the worktopcorrectly on the corners, the cornerradii (≤ R4) can be carefully scribed tosuit.

Connect the cooktop to the mainselectricity supply.

Check that the cooktop works.

Installation notes

Flush fit cooktops are only suitable forinstallation in natural stone (granite, marble), tiled or solid wood worktops.Certain models are suitable forbuilding into glass worktops - pleasesee advice under "Building-indimensions". When using a worktopmade from any other material, pleasecheck first with the worktopmanufacturer that it is suitable forinstalling a flush fit cooktop.

The internal width of the base unitmust be at least as wide as theinternal cut-out width for the cooktop(see "Building-in dimensions"). This isto ensure that the casing can be easilyremoved for maintenance. If theunderside of the cooktop is not freelyaccessible after installation, anysealant used to plug the gaps aroundthe appliance must be removed toenable the cooktop to be lifted out ofthe cut-out should this be necessary.

The cooktop can be installed

– in a suitable cut-out in a natural stoneworktop.

– in a suitable cut-out in a tiled or solidwood worktop with a woodensupport frame. The frame must beprovided on site, and is not suppliedwith the appliance.
