KINDERGARTENAttached to each of our villages is an SOS kindergarten which caters for our children and those from the surrounding community. In a playful and stimulating environment, children develop their social and learning skills.

SOSFAMILYSTRENGTHENINGPROGRAMME (FSP)

Is a community based child care programme aimed to guide families and communities by strengthening their capacity to care for their children. We know the child’s natural family is the best place for a child to grow.

In Botswana our current focus is on Education- offering parenting skills for caregivers, self-sufficiency skills, encouraging school drop-outs to return to school, and assisting preschool children to get into schools, including our kindergartens

HOWWECAMETOBEHermann Gmeiner, born in 1919, was the founder of SOS Children’s Villages. After the Second World War he was confronted with the suffering of orphaned and homeless children. Convinced that help cannot be effective where a child has no home, he established the first SOS Village in Imst, Austria in 1949.

TODAY THERE ARE SOS VILLAGES IN 133 COUNTRIES, WITH 1766 FACILITIES OF WHICH 458 ARE SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES.

SOSCHILDREN’SVILLAGE

Is an independent non governmental social development organisation that cares for orphaned, abandoned, destitute, and traumatised children. We endeavour to restore the balance in their livesgive them individual support and take them by the hand on the road from childhood to adulthood. In Botswana we have three SOS children’s villages Tlokweng, Francistown and Serowe which as at 2013 provides for nearly 1955 children and youth.

In 1987 the SOSChildren’sVillage Tlokweng opened its doors with six family houses. Today the Tlokweng village comprises of 16 family houses, 3 youth houses and provides for 156 children and youth.

With the increased demand for permanet family based care,SOSChildren’sVillage Francistown opened in 1998. It consists of 16 family houses,2 youth houses and a kindergarten.

In January 2008 we opened our third Village, the SOS Children’s Village Serowe which consist of 12 family houses and a kindergarten. With further funding we hope to build boys and girls youth houses.

OURFOURPRINCIPLESOur child care approach is based on four principles and on the simple fact that children need a family network if they are to grow up as healthy individuals in every respect.

1. The SOS mother builds a close relationship with every child entrusted to her care, providing the security, love and stability that each child needs.

2. Between eight to ten girls and boys of different ages live together as brothers and sisters, with natural siblings staying in the same SOS family

1.

2.

3. The house is the family’s home with its own unique character and routing, giving the children a sense of security and belonging

4. Together the families in the houses form the village, creating a warm atmosphere where children enjoy a happy childhood. The families share experiences and lives as integrated and contribution members of the local community.

Each village is supervised by a Village Director who supports the SOS Mothers.

SUPPORTINGGROWTHAND INDEPENDENCE

INDEPENDENCEOur long term aim is to produce independent adults who can fend for themselves when they leave the SOS children’s Village

FURTHER EDUCATIONOn completion of formal schooling we encourage tertiary education of either an academic or skills nature. Most of our youth do proceed to vocational training centres, colleges or universities.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITYWhen old enough to live more independently, our teenagers are promoted into SOS youth House. Under the guidance of a live-in youth leader they run their own household, manage a budget and learn to take responsibility for their decisions.

SCHOOLINGFrom kindergarten our children proceed to regular government schools situated in the nearby community.
