One of the biggest evenings of the year at Metro is the Awards of Excellence,

which was held on June 12th at the Sheraton Parsippany Hotel. In fact, it was

a SOLD OUT event with over 260 members and friends in attendance. At this

annual event, our organization takes the opportunity to recognize the extra-

ordinary work of our members. I was honored, as Metro President, to be

asked to hand out plaques to the award winners. The event takes a lot of plan-

ning and coordination to make it happen. We are fortunate to have such a ded-

icated group of people willing to donate their time and talents to making this

evening a success. I would like to thank the Awards of Excellence

Committee, the staff of Metro and everyone else involved in putting this

event together.

I also noticed that many of this year’s award recipients enlisted the help of

professionals that are not members of Metro. The work produced by these

professionals was obviously good because the homes they worked on were

award winners. I would like to ask the award recipients and others in our

organization who use these professionals to help me to recruit them as mem-

bers. It is good for their businesses; and it is good for us. We need to grow

our ranks with professional, qualified people in order to make our organiza-

tion stronger. There is strength in numbers.

We should always be vigilant in our efforts to attract new members. If you

have any prospective member that you need help recruiting, give a call to the

Metro office. KT, Sharon and Aileen are available to help you out with print-

ed information about our organization and membership applications. Our

website – www.metrobca.org – is a good source of information for informa-

tion about membership and the Association in general. Help us to help build

a stronger Metropolitan Builders and Contractors Association.

Lastly, Metro will be featured in the next edition of Builder/Architect

Magazine. I encourage everyone to pick up a copy. It has been decades since

another local builders association has been featured in the NJ edition of this

magazine. A four-page reprint of the magazine is available for all members to

purchase. Nola Zusi of Builder/Architect Magazine will work with you to

customize the back cover with your own company message, essentially mak-

ing you a “featured” member of the Association. This can serve as an inex-

pensive marketing piece for you to give out to prospective customers. Please

contact our staff at Metro for further information. Do not let this marketing

opportunity pass you by; it could be decades before it could come around

again!

The annual Awards of Excellence dinner was held on June 12th

at the Sheraton Parsippany Hotel. It was a great success as over

250 members, family and friends gathered to hear the Winners

of the Awards announced. 96 Awards were handed out for Excellence

in a variety of categories for Builders, Remodelers and Associate

(sub-contractor) members including Sales Person of the Year,

Websites and several Individual Achievement Awards. The big winner

of the evening was the Grand Community of the Year Award that was

presented to BNE Real Estate Group for their Twenty 50 Fort Lee

community.

In addition to the presentation of the Awards, Metro honored members

with over 30 years of Association involvement. Bill Asdal and Bob

Hertzberg were recognized for the Awards they received at the NAHB

International Builders Convention this past February in Las Vegas.

We all love to win something, but nothing is more ful-

filling than being honored by your peers for your hard

work, extraordinary product or excellent service. This

is what the Awards of Excellence (AOE), presented

annually by the Metropolitan Builders & Contractors

Association of NJ (Metro) provides for you and your

firm.

You may ask yourself, why enter the competition? The

answer is simple. Whether it’s a national, state (SAM)

or local award, such as the Metro’s Awards of

Excellence, the prestige and recognition that follows

winning an award is of utmost value. Awards say a lot

about your company. Most importantly, customers see

awards as a positive third party endorsement, which

gives your firm credibility and respect. The Award

achievements and other forms of recognition should be

proudly displayed and promoted to generate wonderful

publicity opportunities, and ultimately increases your

firm’s visibility and sales.

Making the Most of the Awards of

Excellence

Now is the time to organize your award entry for next

year. Spring and Fall are the perfect times of the year

to photograph your new homes, renovations, land-

scape designs and distinguished products. Fall colors

are vibrant and show off most products perfectly. It is

also a good time to consider your sales and marketing

efforts of the past year, incorporate your strategies and

results into a concise marketing statement, and look to

see what award winning ideas from other company

entries might also work for you! When putting togeth-

er your entries, point out what your firm did that was

different, innovative or special that makes your prod-

uct an award winner.

Presentation also says a lot about an award-winning

firm. Be sure to follow all directions and present your

entry package as neatly and professionally as possible,

labeling every photo and all marketing materials.

Utilize professional photography where available and

include written marketing statements on your letter-

head. Enclose all the materials in a binder or folder.

Also, remember a contact name and phone number in

case the judges have questions.

You’ve Won – Now What!!

Proudly display the Award in your office or wherever

the most clients will see it. Send a typed release to your

community, model, renovation, or design product, etc.

Write an article in your company newsletter about

your Award including the winner’s logo. Use banners

or star bursts on your ads to acknowledge your award

– the winner logo is great for this purpose. Proclaim

you are an award winner on your company stationery,

signs, brochures, correspondence, website and social

media outlets, etc. One last very important step would

be to send thank you notes to all those involved in win-

ning your award.

The 2015 Awards of Excellence Call for Entries book-

let will be available this coming Fall with the deadline

for entries at the end of February 2015. Enter the com-

Awards of Excellence Dinner Gala took place on June
