COMMUNITY PROJECTS UPDATE

Big Local Workshops

In the wake of our residents survey ,which concluded in May 2017, we have been holding workshops to discuss some of the key priorities that came through in the results – grass verges, parking, litter, cleanliness, shopping, youth provision and crime. Ideas and plans are being generated from the workshops to refresh the Lawrence Weston Community Plan. Ambition Lawrence Weston and Big Local are looking for more residents to get involved in delivery and volunteering their time to make things happen in Lawrence Weston.

If you have any ideas or you would like to get involved contact Mark Pepper via 07825959617 or email [email protected]

Goodbye Joanne Clarkson Employment and Community Worker

After 2.5 years working at Ambition Lawrence Weston, we said goodbye to Joanne Clarkson. She said “I have learned a lot and hopefully have made a difference. I am really glad I am leaving whilst Lawrence Weston is on an upward curve of investment and better opportunities for the community. I will be back to visit!”

Lidl supermarket opening soon.

Lidl is planning to open the new store in Stile Acres, near Ridignealze shops, on Friday 2nd February 2018.

The store will include:

Bakery Self-service tills Customer toilets Car and cycle parking

The supermarket is coming to the area as a result of Ambition Lawrence Weston and the residents’ hard work over the last few years.

Youth Centre CCTV

CCTV cameras have been installed in Lawrence Weston Youth Centre, thanks to funding from The Big Local. We hope this will discourage vandalism and also give reassurance to everyone using the centre and outside games area.

The cameras give very clear images, work at night and we can even view remotely on a smartphone! The Police confirmed we can share recorded images to help identify offenders (but hope we never need to!)

Port Communities Resilience Fund opens Community Grants scheme for local

groups

Local People are invited to influence which projects get funded

A Community Facilities grant scheme has been launched to support local organisations in Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston ward to improve the spaces they operate from, the equipment they use and the services they offer to local people.

The Community Facilities Grant Scheme is offering a total of £315,000 to community groups through a competitive grant scheme. It is part of the £1m Port Communities Resilience Fund (PCRF), which was approved by Bristol City Council’s Cabinet in August 2017 and is made up from profits gained through the sale of the Port Company in 2015.

Councillors, local residents and organisations met in November 2016 to help develop priorities for where the money should be spent within their ward and as a result three themes were agreed:

Jobs and enterprise Improving community facilities Thriving high streets

The Community Facilities Grant Scheme is designed to support the second theme and will provide grants between £10,000 and £100,000 to support improvements to buildings or to buy equipment. Applications for funding have now opened and applications are being invited from community groups within or offering services in the Avonmouth, Lawrence Weston, Sea Mills/Coombe Dingle and Shirehampton areas. The deadline for bids is Friday 4 December 2017 at 5pm.

Councillor Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “This is a great opportunity to reinvest the money from the sale of the Port back in to the community where it is based. I hope that local organisations will use this fund to make small changes to their buildings to make sure they are able to stay with us long into the future whilst also encouraging more outside investment to the area.”

Applicants will be asked to show how their chosen projects will help strengthen them for the future and they will be required to double any investment they receive to show that they are able to seek new sources of funding.

Grants from the fund are only for improvements to physical assets such as buildings or equipment. It cannot be used to pay for salaries or ongoing running costs.

Support to apply

To help community groups apply for funding, Voscur, the local Voluntary and Community support organisation, is offering help to any group in the ward so they can put together strong applications.

Contact Voscur at https://www.voscur.org and click the "support" tab for access to their online request form. Or call them on 0117 909 9949, or email [email protected].

Local People influencing which projects get funded

There are two ways local people can influence which projects succeed in getting a Community Facilities Grant.

Join the Resident Assessment Panel

Local residents (you have to live in Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston Ward) are invited to join a Resident Assessment Panel. They will meet organisations in January 2018 to hear about their projects and to

Page 5: On Your Doorstep - Ambition LW€¦ · On Your Doorstep Ambition Lawrence ... the site and together they developed some great layout ideas. ... experience is necessary as we will

5

Autumn 2017

question them and score them. Their scores will form part of the final decision about which organisations will be funded.

If you think you might be interested in taking part in this Resident Panel contact the Council on [email protected] or phone Keith Houghton on 0117 922 2135

Join the Public Vote

There will be a public voting week in January 2018 on all projects which have submitted eligible applications. This will be both online and through local centres for people who don’t use computers. The results of this poll will also count towards the final funding decisions.

If you want to make sure you get information about this vote so you can take part contact the Council on [email protected] or phone Keith Houghton on 0117 922 2135

Applying for a grant from the Community Facilities grant scheme

Guidance on how to apply to the Community Facilities Grant Scheme is on Bristol City Council’s website at: bristol.gov.uk/pcrfgrants. Updates will be published on this webpage.

For initial information on the Port Communities Resilience Fund – including requesting the guidance pack for the Community Facilities Grant Scheme, email [email protected]

Other themes in the Port Communities Resilience Fund

The Jobs and Enterprise theme will fund improvements to local facilities to provide better access to people in Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston, which includes:

Job search support Careers information advice and guidance Training and skills development Advice and support for business start-ups, including social enterprise Advice and support for early stage / growing businesses Equipment and technology for new digital and creative businesses.

The Thriving High Streets theme will fund physical improvements to the ward’s four main high streets/shopping areas, including pavements, new and improved seating, litter bins and recycling facilities, improved signage, greenery and CCTV.

Astry Close Housing - Progress update

A big thank you to the residents who have been involved in workshops to help produce sketch layouts for the Astry Close site. The group met with architect Chris Carthy from Local Agenda to explore layouts for the site and together they developed some great layout ideas. The sketches show 40 mainly 2 and 3 bedroomed houses on the site set up in small clusters with a central shared space. They have been shown to other residents and Bristol City Council who all agree that they’re a really good start and can be developed further into a more detailed scheme.

From here then the project will be hoping to appoint the main architects with the help of some new funding that has come in. Look out for resident consultation events over the coming months. If you’d like more information on the project please get in touch.

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB

With the 2017 season coming to a close it is time to look back on what has been a very active and successful campaign. A season that started on the all-weather, and yes, they do play all year round. Green at Wrington in April will end with a home game against GB Britton on the more conventional grass surface on Sunday October 1st.

Between these dates more than fifty mixed ( ladies and gentlemen) friendly games have been played as well as eight Ladies only, Monday evening league, club competitions, County Competitions and Ladies

and Gentlemen’s Bristol and District League have been played. In July there was a very successful tour, based in Bournemouth. This was not only bowling but also a chance to go for a dip in the sea, some bowlers did, ride on the Bournemouth Wheel or just explore what is a wonderful coastal region.

Bowling is a game that provides many hours of healthy outdoor exercise and the opportunity to meet like minded people in pleasant surroundings. It is a game for people of all ages.

At the City and Port of Bristol help is always at hand. Throughout the season the club has run Tuesday evenings. All equipment has been supplied and help has been at hand.

The City and Port of Bristol Bowling Club has the advantage of being part of the main Social Club. There is no shortage of car parking, something that is a lacking in many clubs as is the opportunity to join in with other activities such as skittles readily available at the venue.

There is a series of social events through the winter and the opportunity to represent the club at the City and County Indoor Arena when

the club takes on local opposition in Saturday afternoon or evening friendly games. Bowling indoors is quite

different to bowling on grass, so this does present something of a challenge to those who bowl exclusively outdoors.

At the end of January there will once again be a Winter Bowling Break at TLH in Torquay. This is a very popular annual event that provides not only indoor bowling each day but also the use of the hotels extensive facilities and the chance to explore Torquay and the surrounding area.

Looking forward, next year the summer tour will be on the Isle-of-Wight again, in July.

For more information about the club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

Wind Turbine Success and More

ALS ENERGY GROUP

Ambition Lawrence Weston’s Community Energy Project setup to benefit the whole ward of Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston.

Last year we surveyed you to ask for your support for a community led wind turbine and ,in September, a wind turbine that will supply energy to Accolade Wines in Avonmouth was granted planning. This is great news especially as Ambition Lawrence Weston has its plans to develop a community led wind project too and would not have happened without the strong support of the community.

Residents from Avonmouth area at the Make Sunday Special event last year showed overwhelming support to develop the community led wind project. 96.2% of 53 residents surveyed were in favour, and similarly 97% of 130 Lawrence Weston residents surveyed at the Lawrence Weston Carnival 2016 also showed the same high level of support.

Getting Ready for Winter?

We’ll be popping up at local events over the coming months and also continue to offer free home energy surveys to save you money with our award winning CHEESE Project (Cold Homes Energy Efficiency Survey Experts).

Health & Wellbeing: Wellbeing Arts

Community Animal Action Event Free vet checks coming to

Lawrence Weston

RSPCA Bristol and Bristol Dogs and Cats Home – a local charity based in St Philips – is teaming up with the National RSPCA to bring free pet care advice and veterinary health checks to Lawrence Weston.

Vets, nurses and animal care workers from the charity will be hitting the road from 18 to 24 October, knocking on doors in the area to offer a free pet MOT and the opportunity for you to discuss any worries you might have about your pet.

Free flea & worm treatments, microchipping and veterinary consultations will be available during the event, and for a limited time Lawrence Weston pet owners will be able to access a free neutering service too.

If you have pets, this is the ideal opportunity for you to get completely free vet advice from a team of experts. A “pop-up” veterinary clinic will be set up for the week of the event, and the charity hopes that this will develop into a regular affordable service in the area, as part of a new initiative to support Bristol pet owners in improving the health and welfare of their animals.

For more information, or to find out how to access the services, please call the Bristol RSPCA on 0117 9803904.

With thanks to Ambition Lawrence Weston for their support in organising the initiative.

Latest news from A Forgotten Landscape, RSPB and Avon Wildlife Trust

Nearing their 2nd anniversary, the RSPB Schools Outreach team have reached a remarkable 10,200 children, aged 2-11, in Primary and Early Years settings across Bristol. Charly Crump, Schools Outreach Officer says, “I am delighted with the enthusiasm with which pupils and teachers have received our nature connection workshops. The variety of habitats we’ve found in school grounds is astonishing – we’ve seen bird feeders; bat boxes and even hogitats (hedgehog homes)! Knowing that our

vital work to connect children to nature will inspire the next generation of wildlife conservationists makes it even more important to continue this work into 2018 and beyond.” If you’d like to book a FREE visit to your school, email [email protected]

Autumn brings the harvest season, and A Forgotten Landscape is celebrating! Throughout October, our smashing Severnside Food Festival will highlight the wide range of delicious local produce in the Lower Severn Vale Levels. We have a whole series of fantastic food events lined up! Wild food walks, cooking workshops, local food menus – loads to explore. You can find a full program on our website at www.aforgottenlandscape.org.uk/severnside-food-festival.

As part of the Festival, we are teaming up again with Lawrence Weston Community Farm to put on fun family Apple Day. Come to the Farm on Wednesday 25 October from 1-4 for FREE fun, crafts, and activities! Bring your own apples for pressing or help press the ones we have! Take part in apple arts and crafts! Sing with the Barley Rye Choir! Hear apple stories! Learn about apples, orchards and the fascinating role they’ve played in our heritage and their importance as a habitat for loads of plants and creatures.

Avon Wildlife Trust are pleased to say they now have extra funding to build on the work Nicole Daw started. The new My Wild City project manager, Matt Collis, says “Over the next four years, we want to engage people in the richness of nature and wildlife on their doorstep. It doesn’t matter what age you are, whether you have no wildlife knowledge or you’re already a nature buff, we can help you discover Lawrence Weston Moor and Saltmarsh Drive Open Space in totally new ways. From woodpeckers to bats, water voles to slow worms, look out for our wildlife walks and other activities. Learn more about nature and how to best manage your area to support wildlife. Everyone is welcome!”

SevernNet Flyer

The route of the SevernNet Flyer changed in August, so it now serves Lawrence Weston again.

The improved timetable better serves shift start and end times in Avonmouth, Access 18 and Cabot Park Industrial areas.

For more details of this and other buses serving Lawrence Weston see www.ambitionlw.org/community/transport/.

COMMUNITY CREALY ADVENTURE PARK TRIP

On August 23rd a community trip was arranged for a day out at Crealy Adventure Park, funded by ALW and the Big Local.

The aim of this trip was to engage with local residents and ask for their voluntary help with some painting in Lawrence Weston Youth Centre. The trip was a massive success, which has resulted in three rooms in the club almost complete, with the idea to get the club up and running again for the local youths/children.

Ideas were given on the day of what would to like to be seen happening within the club. These included: gymnastics, football, discos, soft play, coffee mornings for the elderly, movie nights. These ideas along with many others will hopefully happen but we still have a long way to go in terms of refurbishment and planning.

We need your help! Your help and ideas however big or small will be

hugely beneficial. The club has a three year lease and if it doesn't start to make money it will have to be sold on, with the likelihood that houses will be built in its place.

For more information please call 07459310041 or pop into club. Let's get the youth off the streets and give the younger generation a youth club they will remember with fond memories!
