Volunteer befriending sch

Side by SideTHE Pembrokeshire office of the Alzheimers developed a new befriending service, recruitinvolunteers from all walks of life, to visit and suin the early stages of dementia.

People with dementia often feel socially isolaconfidence and feeling unable to continue hobinterests, or they find it hard to go out and abused to.

The volunteers may spend a couple of hours

them, in some cases accompanying them out tfor walks, out to clubs, or they may spend timthe person, listening to music, chatting, helpingThe person with dementia is supported and e

carry on their normal social activities as muchthe carer may get a few hours to do what thedo, and the volunteer enjoys knowing they hav

differences to someones life.In a similar scheme, in Carmarthenshire, a vo

lady out for coffee and for a wander round thanother takes a younger person out to gardenfor a walk, and yet another watches rugby and

matches with the person they visit.All normalactivities that most of us take for granted but increasingly difficult if you have dementia.

Here in Pembrokeshire three new volunteercompleted the necessary training and will soo

with a client.All volunteers have undergone anCriminal Record check.
