Letter from the President & CEO

Welcome to our eighth performance of the Houston Symphony Orchestra during our 2013 season. Tonight’s unique concert is a real treat for our guests. Música Cláica Latina is led by world-renowned Guest Conductor Marcelo Lehninger. He makes his Pavilion debut at this concert. In addition, tonight’s performance features Venezuelan solo pianist, Gabriela Martinez. It proves to be an exciting artistic experience.

Mark your calendars for our remaining Houston Symphony concerts of the season including Hocus Pocus Pops Oct. 11 and Holly Jolly Symphony Spectacular Dec. 12. Both of these concerts are great family events so bring the entire family!

It’s also almost time for our 18th Annual Children’s Festival Nov. 9-10. We always look forward to these days of educational fun and entertainment for our youngest patrons and their parents.

We are again providing free mezzanine and lawn seating for all of our performing arts events, thanks to our generous sponsors.

At all symphonies, guests are welcome to have a picnic in their seat or on the hill. Lawn chairs are also provided free of charge at all performing arts events. Please take advantage of this free offer and bring your family, friends and neighbors to The Pavilion this season to enjoy an evening under the stars. You will be glad you did.

Thank you for coming and I hope you enjoy tonight’s performance.

Conductor Biography Soloist Biography

Brazilian-born Marcelo Lehninger is recognized as one of the most gifted conductors of his genera-tion. Appointed music director of the New West Symphony Or-chestra in Los Angeles, his grow-ing reputation as a dynamic conductor inspires musicians and audiences of all ages worldwide.

Appointed associate conductor of the Boston Symphony Orches-tra beginning in the 2013-14 sea-son, Lehninger previously served as assistant conductor for two seasons, having been selected by

James Levine. He is the second Brazilian conductor to hold this position.

Lehninger made his BSO debut in 2010 with the violinist Pinchas Zuker-man as a soloist and in 2011 he stepped in for Maestro Levine on very short notice to conduct the world premiere of Harrison Birtwistle’s Violin Concerto and Bartok’s 2nd Violin Concerto with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist. In 2012, Lehninger filled in for Andris Nelsons, conducting a pro-gram that included the American premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Trumpet Concerto “From the Wreckage” with Håkan Hardenberger as soloist as well as Strauss’ “Thus Spake Zarathustra.” He also successfully conducted a program, without any rehearsals, that included Stravin-sky’s Piano and Winds Concerto with Peter Serkin and Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony.

Maestro Lehninger’s other BSO appearances include his Tanglewood debut in the summer of 2012 with pianist Nelson Freire and a subscrip-tion week in the 2012-13 season with violinist Joshua Bell.

As a guest conductor in the United States, he has led the Boston, Hous-ton, National (Washington, DC), New West, Hartford, Fairfax and Jack-sonville symphony orchestras, as well as the Florida Orchestra, Boston Symphony Chamber Players, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, New England Conservatory Philharmonia and Bard College Conser-vatory Orchestra. In Canada, Lehninger made his debut in 2011 con-ducting the Hamilton Philharmonic, and was invited to conduct the orchestra again in 2012.

Acclaimed by the Washington Post as “an alert, dynamic figure,” he served as cover conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra’s sub-scription concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and as-sociate conductor of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra in Brazil.

Lehninger was music advisor of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas for the 2007-08 season. Placido Domingo serves as artistic advisor for the ensemble, which is composed of 120 talented musicians from more than 20 countries throughout the Americas. In summer of 2008, Maestro Lehninger toured with YOA and pianist Nelson Freire in South America, conducting concerts in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. He has led all of the top orchestras in Brazil as well as regular guest conducting in Argentina.

Marcelo lehninger

Before dedicating his career to conducting, Lehninger studied violin and piano. He holds a master’s degree from the Conductors Institute at New York’s Bard College, where he studied conducting under Har-old Farberman and composition with Laurence Wallach. His mentors also include Kurt Masur, Leonard Slatkin and Roberto Tibiriçá.

A dual citizen of Brazil and Germany, Lehninger is the son of pianist Sônia Goulart and violinist Erich Lehninger. Marcelo, his wife Laura and daughter Sofia divide their time between Boston and Los Angeles.

George P. Mitchell passed away July 26, 2013, at the age of 94. In 1974, he created The Woodlands, a 28,000-acre master-planned community. He was a pioneer and visionary. Without Mitchell’s dedication and support, programs at The Pavilion including perform-ing arts events and educational outreach events would not be possible.

Mitchell along with his wife, Cynthia Woods Mitchell, had a passion for the arts. Cynthia’s commitment that the arts should be acces-sible to all helped create a first-class outdoor venue for popular and classical music, opera, dance, and the performing arts. Her dream of this kind of venue became a reality when The Pavilion opened with a star-studded gala weekend in April 1990. The Houston Symphony performed April 27, Frank Sinatra April 28 and Alabama with Clint Black on April 29.

In 1992, thanks to a generous gift from the Mitchells to the Houston Symphony’s endowment fund, The Pavilion became the official Summer Home of the Houston Symphony. As a result, The Pavilion presents a series of performances featuring the symphony every season. Due to Mitchell’s support, the venue has emerged as one of the premier amphitheaters in

Born in Ohio, JoAnne and Randy Lowry met while in college at Ohio State University. The pair moved to Texas in 1977 and then to The Woodlands in 2000. Randy was employed by Shell, but left the company to work for an executive search business for 34 years. He has owned the company since 2001. JoAnne worked for an insurance company, and stayed at home with their children.

The Lowrys learned about The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, from a friend who told the couple they needed to get involved with the organization.

Since joining, Randy immediately began serving on the board and be-came president after one year. He served two terms as president as well as on The Pavilion Board of Directors.

“To be involved in such big decisions like rebuilding after Hurricane Ike in 2008 was such a phenomenal experience,” said Randy.

For 11 years, Randy has chaired the Annual Wine Dinner & Auction committee, benefitting scholarships for local students majoring in the fine arts in college.

“The educational component of The Pavilion is why we have been involved for so long,” said Randy. “The scholarships are what it’s all

the world, hosting internationally acclaimed performing arts organizations including Hous-ton Ballet and Houston Grand Opera as well as major concert tours.

Mitchell was very involved with The Pavilion. He loved to visit during the annual Children’s Festival and Musical Scores events. He was instrumental in the rebuilding efforts of the venue after Hurricane Ike damaged the roof in 2008. Mitchell’s donation of $1 million helped open the venue back up bigger and better than ever.

A memorial tribute service in Mitchell’s honor was held Aug. 8 at The Pavilion. The Houston Symphony and the Texas A&M Singing Cadets performed and many community leaders and family members spoke at the service.

Mitchell leaves a lasting legacy for his contributions to science, energy and the environment, as well as the arts. He was married to his wife Cynthia for more than 65 years and raised 10 children. He has 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

about. Seeing the students come back and perform is so rewarding.”

JoAnne enjoys working the Children’s Fes-tival, Fine Arts Education Day and Partners Instrument Petting Zoo.

“I love to watch the kids when they come to our events. When they see the orchestra for the first time, they get this look in their eyes,” said JoAnne. “I love to be able to give them that experience.”

In addition to being involved with Partners, JoAnne also is involved with the Cypress-Woodlands Junior Forum, Woodlands United Methodist Church and the Montgomery

County Women’s Center. Randy was a member of the Rotary Club of Houston for 15 years and served as chairman of the Lombardi Award. He also has been involved with the Montgomery County Women’s Center and the American Cancer Society.

“We always believed it’s our responsibility to give back to the community we live in,” said Randy.

The Lowrys have been married for 44 years and have two sons and three granddaughters.

Concert Etiquette

CHIlDRENThe Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orches-tra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible.

ElECTRONIC DEVICES Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Photography and videography are NOT allowed during the performances, including with cellphones, at the request of the artists. Tablets, such as iPads and Kindles, are not permitted into the venue because they are a distraction to other guests and the artists.

lATE SEATINGFashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.

DuRING THE PERFORMANCEGuests should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a per-formance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assis-tance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience.

APPlAuSENot sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience.

AFTER THE CONCERTBravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely.
