Conversion to

Christianity Allowed

A British judge hasallowed a 10-year-oldJewish girl to convert toChristianity despite hermother’s determined oppo-sition.

The parents, whosenames have been withheld, were both Jewish at thetime of the child’s birth. They divorced in 2010,agreeing on a custodyarrangement for the girl andher younger brother.

Shortly after thedivorce the father convertedto Christianity and that’swhen the problems began. The husband, apparentlywith the full support of thedaughter, wanted the child

Jews approach the New Year and theDay of Atonement with a fair degree of real-ism. Inherent in our prayers to escape theills to which the human race is subjected isthe knowledge that during the year whichhas passed few of us have been spared thetragedies which are an inevitable part oflife’s journey. In the understanding thatpain and suffering afflict us all we face thefuture with more than a little foreboding.

If a sense of uneasiness is under-standable in our personal lives, it is alsoreflected in our response to the dark blotswhich affect our fellow Jews and, indeed, allof mankind: the deprivation and want whichhave killed hundreds of thousands andwhich show no sign of abating; the persis-tent danger of terrorism; the harrowingthought that there are diabolical men, removed from complete sanity, who actually

relish the prospect of a nuclear holo-caust. The lack of even a modicum of com-passion among so many cannot help butleave us fraught with anxiety,

“God’s in His Heaven and all’s rightwith the world” may be the comfortablemessage of Pippa’s Song. And many ser-mons during the High Holy Days will likelydwell on the ultimate compassion of theHoly One, blessed be His name. But thefact is that if there are solutions to theproblems which plague our uneasy, inse-cure, troubled universe, if the alleviation ofpersonal pain is at all possible, it will be“we” who will have to discover the remedies.

Perhaps our prayers should be notfor divine intervention but rather for thestrength we require to face life’s perils andthe courage we must summon up to con-front our many enemies.

During the first GulfWar in 1991, Israelis walkedthe streets toting a squarebrown box. Schoolgirls evendecorated their boxes withstickers and drawings.Inside the boxes were a gasmask and an atropinesyringe in case of nerve gas.

But soon after thewar, Israeli authorities saidmany of the gas masks hadpassed their expirationdates and were no longereffective. Residents wereasked to return the masksand told they would bereplaced. But in most cases, the replacements nevercame.

Today, as fightingspreads throughout Syria,Israeli of f icials are con-

cerned that Syria’s chemicalweapons stocks could fallinto the wrong hands andpose a threat to Israel. Theydo not believe that SyrianPresident Bashar Al-Assadwould use chemicalweapons against his ownpeople, or even againstIsrael, but radical groupssuch as Hizbullah or Al-Qa’ida have expressed keeninterest in acquiring theseweapons.

“There is a probablescenario that eventually theregime will collapse and dif-ferent armed groups willtake control of differentareas including the storagelocations of differentweapons systems,” ShlomoBrom, a weapons expert at

the INSS think tank toldThe Media Line. “Just ashappened in Libya, theseweapons could be marketedand sent to different terror-ist groups.”

Currently, onlyabout half of Israelis havegas masks. A military offi-cial told The Media Line thatIsrael is producing gasmasks at a rate of 40,000per month and distributingthem as fast as they areproduced. By 2013, 4.6 mil-lion Israelis will have gasmasks.

The current popula-tion of Israel is 7.85 million, meaning that the shortageof gas masks will continue.Just over half of the popula-tion will have the masks.

Israelis can get theirgas masks at eight specialstations set up inside postoffices around Israel.Workers there told TheMedia Line that there hasnot been a significantincrease in the past fewdays despite reports in themedia about Syria’s chemi-cal weapons stores.

“The politiciansseem more worried than thepublic,” Shlomo Brom said.“I don’t have a gas maskand I’m not concerned.”

Netanyahu wouldnot say whether Israelwould launch a pre-emptivestrike on Hizbullah, although Israeli media hasspeculated that it couldhappen.

“Israel is perma-nently prepared for threatsof these types,” a defenseofficial told The Media Line.“The defense establishmentis continually training, practicing and investing sothat we remain ready toprovide the relevantresponse to all the scenar-ios. Naturally, we are notgoing to elaborate regardingthe specifics of the scenar-ios or the preparedness.”

Two Israeli compa-nies presently produce thegas masks-- Shalon, whichproduces new masks; andSuper-Gum, which refur-bishes old ones. Even if theystepped up their productionand operated at full capaci-ty, it would take at least twoyears to make all of the gasmasks that are needed.

In recent days,Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu has warned thatIsrael might act againstHizbullah, which is based inLebanon, if they obtainedchemical weapons. “Canyou imagine Hizbullah – thepeople who are conductingwith Iran, all these terrorattacks around the world –can you imagine them withchemical weapons?”Netanyahu said onAmerica’s Fox News recent-ly. “It would be like Al-Qa’ida having chemicalweapons. It is something that is not acceptable”.

much has changed. Newpersonalities have emerged, others have faded, somehave remained, but theimportance of bringingattention to this group isconstant. For this reason Iam committed to publishingand developing this list as aregular endeavor, and assuch I present the 3rdannual list.

Two years ago, fol-lowing the release of theJerusalem Post’s first list ofthe world’s 50 most influen-tial Jews, I was inspired toinitiate an annual list of myown. Not of Jews, but ofnon-Jews, specifically thosewho are most positivelyinfluencing the Jewishfuture.

Since last year’s list,

PRIME MINISTRER STEPHEN HARPER WATCHESas Benjamin Netanyahu signs the guest book dur-ing his visit to Canada. For the second consecu-tive year Harper has been rated among the topnon-Jews having a positive impact on the future ofworld Jewry. (see above article)

Similar to the crite-ria used by other list mak-ers, my candidates havebeen chosen from aroundthe world, and all walks oflife. The list includes worldleaders, journalists, activists and businessgiants among others, all ofwhom have made a signifi-cant and constructiveimpact on Israel and/or theJewish world.

Although by nomeans an exact science, myaim in this compilation is toprovide some insight intothe playing field of thisunique and importantgroup. Additionally I aim to

to bring recognition to theiroften courageous, some-times unacknowledged, activities on behalf of Israeland the Jewish people.10. Pilar Rahola SpanishJournalist, Politician.

There was a lengthyperiod of time when Spainwas a society that was toler-ant of the ethnic communi-ties that lived on the IberianPeninsula, especially thecountry’s Jews.

That all changed bythe 1490s, thanks to theSpanish Inquisition. Led bya fanatical monk namedTomas de Torquemada,Spain’s Jews (whom he

deemed as “heretics”) wereforced to convert toChristianity, or suffer theconsequences. And thoseconsequences usuallymeant unspeakable a c t sof torture, often climax-ing in a ceremony calledthe “auto da fé”, whereJews, and Marranos, would end up being tied toa stake and burned alive.

Through Isabel, readers get a portrait ofsomeone who is not onlysmart, intelligent andresourceful, but of a younglady who also becomes asymbol of tolerance. Sheaccepts a group of peoplewhom she hates at first, butwhen she discovers the trueface of these people, is morethan willing to accept them

for what they are (especiallywhen she discovers that sheis actually part of thatgroup).

“The Last Song” is awell written and movingnovel that provides yetanother example of thesuffering Jews have had toendure in so many coun-tries in which they havelived. Like the Holocaust, theSpanish Inquisition is partof our history younger gen-erations should never for-get. And thanks to the storytold in the “The LastSong” the lessons of histo-ry are less likely to be for-gotten.

Turken, a corporatedefense litigator with littleexperience in this kind oflaw, took the case anywaybecause he was ”outraged”at the conduct of the hotelowner and “incrediblyimpressed” with the plain-tiffs. “As a Jew” he toldreporters, “I took this casevery personally, but theplaintiffs made it a pleasure- I was honored to representthem”.

Ari Ryan, one of theorganizers of the event, believed that the long anddifficult legal process wasworth it in the end. Hecould not bear to watch asJews with wristbands wereherded out of the pool. “Evilsucceeds”, said Ryan, “ifgood men and women don’tstand up and do what isright”.

IT’S NOT THE KIND OF NEWS THAT APPEARS on the front pages of the world’s press but therecent economic agreement between Israel and thePalestinians deserves publicity. For over a yearthe two sides have been working on formulatingan agreement that regulates taxes and bilateraltrade. The Israeli Finance Ministry maintains thatthe agreements that will go into effect on January1, 2013 “will introduce mechanisms that betterfacilitate the movement of goods between Israeland the Palestinian Authority, and the support ofboth parties’ efforts in reducing illegal trade andtax evasion. The arrangements will further assistin enhancing the Palestinian tax system and thusaid in strengthening the economic base of thePalestinian Authority.” The two sides also agreedthat a pipeline would be built “for the safe andexclusive transfer of petroleum products” fromIsrael to the PA. More Anti-Semitism

At Soccer Match

It’s become a com-mon sight at soccer match-es in Europe involvingIsrael. Recently Hungariansoccer fans shouted anti-Semitic slogans whenHatikva was played duringa match between Israel andHungary in Budapest.

Fans could be heardyel l ing ”d ir ty Jew” andBuchenwald”. Some turnedtheir backs to the field duringHatikva. Others voiced theirobvious approval for Italiandictator Benito Mussolini.Palestinian and Iranian flagscould be seen spottedthroughout the stadium.

“Such anti-Semitichooliganism”, says EfraimZuroff, the Israel director ofThe Simon WiesenthalCenter, “is a reflection ofthe growing anti-Semitismin Hungary which is con-stantly being encouragedby the ultra-nationalistJobbik party.”

Forgoing private sector opportu-nities, Ms. Fahoum is determined to pursue a newcareer off the tennis courts, by accepting a positionas a Development Associate for the Israel TennisCenters Foundation in New York City. JacquelineGoldstein, VP for Global Development, stated that“Ms. Fahoum will be raising awareness and fundsfor ITC’s co-existence and social impact programs.Nadine is a wonderful example of the kind of lead-ers that the ITC is developing. As a proud IsraeliArab, she is the perfect role model andAmbassador for Israel.” Fahoum wants to helpcreate a better future for the next generation ofchildren in Israel, regardless of their backgrounds.Adds Fahoum: “I am a product of the Israel TennisCenter’s co-existence program and firmly believethat through playing tennis together, Arab andJewish children can overcome barriers of under-standing. When children build relationships start-ing at a young age they only see each other asfriends. Without the ITC, I would not be at theplace I am today.” Nadine may be the first Israeli-Arab Muslim woman to work globally for a JewishPhilanthropic organization in the United Statesraising money so that more Arab and Jewish chil-dren can get to know one another through thesport of tennis.
