Dear Fellow Congregants,

This month marks the start of another New Year. As we enter 5774, I want to wish each and every one of you a healthy and happy New Year.

This month I really want to ask all of you to make it a priority to get your picture taken for the Temple Photo Directory. It is at absolutely no cost to you, so please schedule your session today. We hope to be able to update our directory every few years.

I know that we have been more persistent this year on pledges and dues. We have had to be since the Temple must operate on a budget, and in order to enjoy all the benefits the Temple has to offer, we must stay current on commitments. New policies have been put in place to ensure that our cash flow will improve.

We have made many changes over the summer to the Temple Office, as well as changes to the foyer and sanctuary. We hope you feel and see a difference.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

I hope to see all of you over the holidays!

As always, with warm regards,Richard H. Cohn, Sr.

DAYS OF AWE & REPENTANCEby Rabbi Daniel M. Sherman

L’SHANAH TOVAH! I know everything seems very early this year – but, trust me, the holidays are all quite on time. Rosh HaShanah is the 1st day of Tishrei, Yom Kippur is the 10th, Sukkot begins on the 15th and ends on the 21st, and Simchat Torah is the 22nd. Every year our Fall Holidays occur in the same month – the month of Tishrei. However, it is very rare when all occur in the month of September: Rosh HaShanah this year begins on the evening of September 4th, Yom Kippur begins on the evening on the 13th, Sukkot begins on the evening of the 18th, and we will celebrate Simchat Torah on the evening of the 25th. That makes for a very holy and busy September.

Rosh HaShanah, literally the “head of the New Year,” and Yom Kippur, “the Day of Atonement,” are our High Holy Days. They are also known as the “Yamim Noraim – the Days of Awe.” Another name for this ten-day period that begins the year is “Aseret Yemei Teshuvah – the Ten Days of Repentance.” According to tradition, we pass in judgment before God, who looks into our hearts to examine our deeds and our motives. We must also judge ourselves, comparing what we did and who we were, with what we had hoped to do and who we would like to become. This is our time for teshuvah, or repentance – our process of admitting that we have made mistakes, seeking and granting forgiveness, and resolving to do better in the next year. The root of the word teshuvah is “to turn,” and it is our goal as we begin the New Year to turn away from our past mistakes and sins, and to return to God and to our highest selves. Perhaps the most important symbol of Rosh HaShanah is the Shofar – the ram’s horn – which wakes us up and calls us to repent.

In our High Holy Day Machzor – our special prayerbook for this time of year – we read that on Rosh HaShanah God, having weighed our good deeds and bad deeds, writes down our fate for the New Year in the Book of Life, and on Yom Kippur the book is sealed. However, we have a chance to change that fate. We are reminded that “teshuvah, tefilah, and tzedakah – repentance, prayer, and righteous acts – can temper judgment’s severe decree.” After all, God is rooting for us, cheering us on as a loving Parent. Again, as we read in our machzor, God does not desire the death of sinners; instead, God is waiting for us to change our ways. But it is up to us and the choices we make. For, as our tradition teaches us, it is not just about what we believe, but rather what we do – our actions speak louder than our words or prayers.

Yom Kippur is our holiest day of the year, a solemn day of prayer and reflection, as well as fasting and confession of sin. We fast to show that we are serious about repentance and to remind ourselves that we have the willpower to change. Our confessions and prayers are communal, not private: we announce that we have all sinned and we pray for our families, our congregation, our community, our people, and our world. We cry out: “For all of our sins, O God of mercy, forgive us, pardon us, grant us atonement!”

We begin Yom Kippur with the haunting melody of Kol Nidre, one of the most famous prayers in all of Judaism. We continue all day, building towards a joyful climax as we hear the shofar’s call once again at the end of our Neilah, or concluding, service. It is a powerful and meaningful day, as we greet each other with the words “G’mar chatimah tovah – may we conclude today sealed for good in the Book of Life.”

As you have heard me say many times, the more we prepare and put into our High Holy Day observance, the more we will get out of our High Holy Days. I hope that you will be with us for both Rosh HaShanah evening and morning services. And there is no better way to spend Yom Kippur than by being at Temple: beginning in the evening, coming back in the morning, and either staying or returning for the afternoon as well as memorial and concluding services. We Jews need to be together on the High Holy Days. I look forward to seeing you and wishing you a good and healthy New Year. L’shanah Tovah Tikateivu!

ALSO …What’s the best thing to do after the High Holy Days? Simple – we celebrate! We follow Rosh HaShanah and Yom

Kippur with our happiest of times: the Festival of Sukkot and then Simchat Torah. It is considered a mitzvah to celebrate and to be happy on these holidays. Please plan on joining us for our joyous celebrations of both. Details can be found here in the Newsletter.

I also want to remind everyone of our congregation’s photo directory. I am very excited about this wonderful project. I think the directory will help bring us closer together and help us get to know even more of the great families and individuals who make up our congregation. However, it only works if everyone is included by having a picture taken for the directory. So please sign up and be a part of this great project.

And don’t forget: Sunday, September 8th is the beginning of Religious School this year. I am so excited to see all of our students and teachers return. Ms. Risa and I can hardly wait! I want to thank Risa, all of our teachers and volunteers, and everyone who works so hard to give our students the very best Religious School experience. We look forward to a wonderful year of learning!

FROM THE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL DIRECTORROSH HASHANAH AND YOM KIPPUR 2013by Risa Strauss

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the holiest days of the Jewish year. They do not celebrate a season or a historical event like many other Jewish holidays. The High Holy Days, as they are commonly known, encourage us instead to focus on ourselves and our abilities to change and grow and learn. It is a time for thought and prayer, remembrance and judgment, for us as individuals as well as the entire community. As all of us can imagine, these are not easy observances to pass on to our children who have become so accustomed to the wackiest and brainiest Madison Avenue advertising techniques. However, if as parents we feel comfortable with some basics, then educating, enjoying and celebrating the High Holy Days at Temple and at home can be an inspiring experience.

Seven Basic Tidbits of High Holy Day Information:! Rosh Hashanah means “Head of the Year” in Hebrew and celebrates creation and the concept that God is all around us.

In essence, Rosh Hashanah commemorates the birthday of the world. Rosh Hashanah begins on the first day of the Jewish month of Tishrei. The new year will be 5774!

! Rosh Hashanah has three other names: Yom Teruah (Day of Sounding the Shofar); Yom Hazikaron (Day of Remembering); and Yom Hadin (Day of Judgment).

! The Shofar is a ram’s horn. Used in ancient times as a communication device – a beeper of sorts – it is a 3,000-year-old musical instrument that is blown during the Rosh Hashanah service and at the conclusion of the Yom Kippur service.

! The Days of Awe are 10 days starting with Rosh HaShanah and ending with Yom Kippur. It is a period of time that provides people the opportunity to really look at their mistakes and make amends and concentrate on prayer and justice. In Hebrew the terms for these acts are teshuvah, t’fillah, and tzedakah.

! Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) is the last day of the period known as the High Holy Days. It is a tradition for those that can (not for the elderly or very young or sick) to fast from sundown to sundown. Fasting is a way to cleanse and perhaps point out our own frailty. Without food, we cannot live. On the afternoon of Yom Kippur at Temple we read the Book of Jonah. The story of the prophet Jonah, the whale, and the people of Ninvah has lessons for all of us about personal responsibility and repentance.

! The Yom Kippur observance also includes Yizkor, a memorial service for those that have passed away. It is customary as well to end Yom Kippur with a “break the fast.”

! Hebrew phrases you may hear on Rosh Hashanah include “Shanah Tovah” – a good year; “Shanah Tovah U’Metukah” – a good sweet year; and “Le’shanah Tovah Tikatayvu” – May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a good year. On Yom Kippur you may hear, “Le’shanah Tovah Tikatayvu ve Techataymu” – May you be inscribed and sealed in the Book of Life for the coming year; and “Tzom Kal” – have an easy fast.

Okay, so that was the lexicon and the tip of an iceberg at that! (Additional phrases and expressions are also listed in this issue.) But what about “SSSTT” – sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch – Risa’s necessary ingredients for a great holiday?

Sight: It is traditional to have a festive dinner at home on Erev Rosh Hashanah and Erev Yom Kippur. Some people enjoy a Rosh Hashanah lunch. Round challot, shaped like crowns or circles, are used at this time of the year (Publix will bake yours with or without raisins), and they are beautiful! Many families will wear something new on Rosh Hashanah – a very apparent way to show the “newness” of the year. Rabbi Sherman will wear an all-white robe, and even the Torah scrolls will have white coverings. White symbolizes freshness, simplicity, and new beginnings. It is an amazing visual memory.Sound: The sounding of the shofar blasts and the murmuring of “Shanah Tovah.”Smell: The sweet smells of freshly baked challah and honey cake.Taste and Touch: No High Holy Day observance is complete without dipping the apple in the honey for a sweet year – producing the inevitable sticky fingers. Many families also serve a pomegranate. Its seeds symbolize the hope that each of us will do many good deeds and enjoy many blessings in the year ahead. New Year’s cards are very popular ways of wishing your friends and relatives a happy and a healthy new year. You can purchase them or make them from scratch with your children.

All in all, the High Holy Days are a time for Cheshbon Nefesh – an accounting of the soul. As families we can help our children ask themselves, “What have I done right, and what have I done wrong this year?” We can set examples for our kids by saying we are sorry and guide our children on how to behave in the future.

The focus of the observance of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is the synagogue. The themes of creation, remembrance, redemption, and hope are weaved throughout the liturgy. At Tree of Life we have a wonderful Rabbi to lead and guide us through these prayers and rituals, as well as a spiritually forceful and uplifting choir to accompany our words. For our youngest of children we have family and children’s services available and special High Holy Day childcare. At the beginning of this article, I wrote that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the holiest days of the Jewish year. We cannot emphasize enough how much we want to see your children here with you at Temple to celebrate these most important and magnificent of holy days.

To all of our Temple members and families: Shanah Tovah u’Metukah – Have a Good and Sweet New Year!

The most rewarding aspect of Jewish education is seeing a smile on a student’s face! And smiles from ear to ear are always visible when a child has a positive Jewish experience. As we enter into the High Holiday season and a new school year, our children’s love for their Judaism and heritage should make us all proud. This summer I was happy to see so many of our students take advantage of the opportunity to attend a Jewish camp. Twenty-eight Tree of Life children enjoyed a Camp Gesher day camp experience at the JCC, 12 children enjoyed a URJ camp sleep-away experience, and a number of children enjoyed other Jewish camping experiences throughout the United States. There is nothing more affirming for a child’s Judaism than to spend time with other Jewish kids in a camp environment. Many of our teens and college-age children also found employment at Jewish camps this summer. This is a great thing because it keeps that Jewish connection strong. Yasher Koach, to all who contributed to the Youth Activities Fund this past year. Your donations enabled so many of our families to have the funds necessary to make sleep-away camp a reality. And a huge shout-out to all the parents who could make the commitment to send their children to a Jewish camp this summer.

September, as always, will be a busy month for the Religious School. As we inch our way into a new fall routine, we invite you to join us at a myriad of activities, including: the first Kidz Shabbat of the year, High Holy Day Services and Youth Oneg Rosh Hashanah, Religious School Opening Day and Parents Bagel Breakfast, Sukkah decorating and Sukkot and Simchat Torah services, the welcoming of our youngest Religious School students at Consecration, Temple Youth Group Programming, and our first Chai-School 11th- and 12th-grade program of the year.

Todah Rabah to EVERYONE – the Temple Board, School Board, and new School Board chairperson Yuliana Iskhakov, teachers, parents, friends, and students who have worked so very hard in ensuring the success of our Religious School.

In every beginning there is creation, the birth of something new. Rosh Hashanah is the festival of creation. I look forward to saying a “L’chaim” to new beginnings with you.

May we all enjoy a Shanah Tovah u’Metukah – A Happy and Sweet New Year.

“In good standing financially” shall be defined as: All membership pledges, assessments, Religious School tuition, and other such financial obligations required by the Board of the membership, hereinafter called “fees,” MUST be paid in full for all PRIOR years, AND the current year’s dues pledge form must be received by the Temple Office.

All current year fees shall NOT be required to be paid in full to be in good standing, provided that those current fees are paid in accordance with the timetables established by the Board of Directors.

All fees owed after July from the prior fiscal year which remain unpaid shall place the member in the “not in good standing” category. An outstanding current year’s dues pledge form will also place the member in the “not in good standing” category.

Members of other congregations outside the City of Columbia with proof of membership and/or with High Holiday courtesy passes are entitled to the same seating privilege as Tree of Life members.

Students at local universities, military basic trainees, and clients at state institutions will be admitted at no cost upon presentation of appropriate identification cards.

All persons not covered under any of the preceding conditions must secure a High Holiday privilege card [$75.00]. Further, out-of-town guests of Tree of Life members are welcome to attend High Holiday services. A contribution is suggested by the Board of Directors for each individual.

The Tree of Life reaffirms its long-standing policy of offering complete access to membership to all persons and full participation to those whose financial positions limit their financial support of the Temple. This policy of open membership is not in any way altered by this Resolution.

For residents living in the greater Columbia area (defined as a 50-mile radius), not covered by a previous policy provision, if their residency in this area has been longer than the previous High Holy Days, tickets will not be made available.

Bubbie returns for the 5th year!

Beth Shalom Synagogue Presents:

Fifth Annual Bubbie's Brisket and Bakery A Jewish Food Extravaganza!

Bubbie is reminding us to mark our calendars for November 17, 2013 at Beth Shalom Synagogue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. where we can all enjoy homemade, kosher delectable foods prepared under Bubbie's direction right in the Beth Shalom kitchen. There will be a preorder pick-up from 9 to 10:45 a.m. the day of Bubbie's. Forms are available at Beth Shalom in the weekly e-mail newsletter or by calling (803) 782-2500. Deadline for pre-orders is October 22nd. We cornered Bubbie in the kitchen at Beth Shalom where she was busily directing her helpers putting up pick-les so they will be ready for November. Bubbie told me that homemade horseradish and potato knishes will be on the menu for the very first time. She loves to cook all of her grandmother's Jewish recipes. You will love to eat them! Bubbie is qvelling this year because for the very first time, all of her kinderlach are baking, decorating, and selling Chanukah cookies. Just in time for Chanukah, which comes very close to Bubbies this year. Can you tell that she is so proud? Some of the other kosher prepared foods include everyone's favorites: Brisket, Corned Beef Sandwiches, Tzimmes, Matzah Ball Soup, Falafel, Stuffed Cabbage, Sweet and Sour Meatballs, Kugel, and Israeli Salad. You can even purchase brisket (with sauce) and corned beef by the pound for the very first time. Bubbie said not to forget our homemade Challah, Rugelach, and Mandel Bread. There will be many other kosher surprises awaiting you at Beth Shalom. And so we can have a little extra fun, there is an auction during the day. Bubbie also wants to remind you that this Jewish Food Extravaganza will help sponsor many of the activities for the Synagogue, as well as some community projects like Harvest Hope Food Bank, and Bubbie's personal favorite, the Tuesday with Friends program. There are still opportunities left to help Bubbie with her Jewish Food Extravaganza! You could sponsor a food station like the Matzah Ball Soup table, in honor of, or in memory of, a loved one. If that is not your schtick, you can bake for Lil's Bakery or volunteer to work the day of Bubbie's Jewish Food Extravaganza. Bubbie said you should give her a call. Bubbie also said "that nice Nathan Picow is again sponsoring the ever-expanding Lilyan's Bakery in memory of his beloved Lil. A mensch that Nathan, we are so lucky” Bubbie said “I can't wait to see him and give him such a kiss! Now get out of my kitchen if you aren't working with me and my children!" And so we left Bubbie, elbows deep in brine and horseradish and such so she can do her magic. And magical it will be! So join us Sunday, November 17th 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Beth Shalom Synagogue, 5827 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia. Bring a big appetite! Many of the desserts and dishes will be great for your guests at Thanksgiving and Chanukah!

Dear Tree of Life Congregation,Thank you for the scholarship for Kutz Camp for this past summer. I had an amazing time. I met people who I now consider some of my closest of friends. I wish the session was longer. The camp also taught me many lessons and skills. Most of these skills I will be able to use to start a Temple Youth Group in Greensboro. I now look forward to next summer where I have the opportunity to be on staff. Thank you again.Emily Kerner

Dear Tree of Life Congregation,Thank you very much for the scholarship that helped me go to Camp Coleman. I had a blast. Can’t wait for Sunday School!Louis Tedeschi

Dear Tree of Life Congregation,Thank you so so so much for donating your money so I could go see my best friends at camp. I also like the programs, especially the sports. I also really really liked the counselors because they were always really nice and funny. The food was good too. Thanks again for donating money so I could have the time of my life.Daniel Tedeschi

Dear Tree of Life Congregation,Thank you for giving me the opportunity to go to URJ Camp Coleman this summer. I had so much fun and did lots of new activities. I was really happy Micah Feinstein could go. I had an awesome cabin unit. I played a lot of basketball and frisbee. We went on a unit trip to Tennessee where we white water rafted and went caving. Some activities we did were Jewish cooking with Nick Contino, ropes course, and video. I had an amazing summer and hope to have another one next year. Thank you again.Jared Kerner

Thanks to your generous contributions to the TOL Youth Activities Fund, several of our kids were able to attend Jewish summer camps this year. The more you give, the more kids can have experiences like these:

BAR MITZVAH PROJECT UPDATEIn July of last year, Leeam Stein began a campaign to raise awareness and funding for the

Heroes Vest Fund organization as his Bar Mitzvah project. On Thursday August 8, 2013, a packed auditorium watched as Leeam Stein presented a body

armor protection vest to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department for K9 Officer Forest. The vest was made possible by the Heroes Vest Fund, a non-profit organization run by Elaine

Henderson of Lexington. This organization provides specialized body armor vests to K9 officers throughout South Carolina. The company is only able to purchase these vests through donations made by businesses and private citizens. Vest prices start at $2,500 and are custom made to fit each dog’s body and his/her departmental assignment. It is Heroes Vest Fund’s goal to see that each K9 officer has the protection that every officer is in need of and surely deserves.

There were so many people in and around our community who generously donated to this very worthy cause. Their generosity was influential in helping Leeam meet his goal of raising enough money to provide this body armor vest for a K9 officer. Leeam would like to thank the community for supporting his Bar Mitzvah project and for following his project as it came to fruition.
