Feast of the “Apostle to the Apostles,”

St. Mary Magdalen, July 22, 2021

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Holy Angels,

We know why this great saint is called the “Apostle to the

Apostles”: she is the first to give the GREAT NEWS of the Resur-

rection of Our Lord Jesus Christ to the eleven Apostles who sur-

vived Easter weekend. We are all called to live out and continual-

ly offer this best of all possible news to those with whom we

come into contact.

This Sunday begins the Bread of Life Discourse from

Chapter 6 of St John’s Gospel. It goes on for four Sundays

through August 22. There is an article from the National Catholic

Register that helps us value ever more greatly the Blessed Sacra-ment. It features how the Holy Eucharist was instrumental in

the conversion of three nationally known Catholics, the former

Southern Baptist and now Catholic evangelist, Sonja Corbitt, a

former Presbyterian minister, Scott Hahn, who is now a Catholic

apologist whose son was ordained a priest this spring, and

Bishop James D. Conley of Lincoln, who is known to our parish

from his visits here. Please go to the link: https://

www.ncregister.com/features/catholic-converts-tell-their-

story-of-eucharistic-reckoning to read the feature story. Due

to this emphasis on the Holy Eucharist for four of the next five

Sundays, we have up in our narthex the Eucharistic Miracles

Exhibit to foster our growth in gratitude for this great gift.

Drawing on the mystery of miracles, Holy Angels Parish is

proud to present the Treasures of the Church exhibit this com-ing Friday, July 31, for one evening only, which offer the oppor-

tunity to reverence sacred relics of the highest order. Fr. Carlos

Martins of the Companions of Christ is the custodian of these

relics and will offer a presentation for us to appreciate them all

the more at 6:30 pm. Miracles have been attributed to many holy

relics over the course of time. We pray that miracles needed by

those partaking in the exhibit may occur due to those praying

over them and asking for the intercession of the saint or Christ to

whom the relic is connected.

Finally, a happy grandparents’ day today to all grandpar-

ents, a day that Pope Francis obviously hijacked from Hallmark

who started it years ago and established it first in the autumn.

Unlike the card manufacturer, the Pope wants to call to mind

and emphasize the connection all grandparents should have with the grandparents of Our Lord, St. Joachim and St. Ann, the

Blessed Virgin Mary’s parents, whose memorial is celebrated on

July 26.

We ask Christ, through the intercession of his maternal grand-

parents, to bless all families and especially members of families

who are far from their own families,

be a Confirmation year for those in seventh and

eighth grades. The all day Archdiocesan required Confirmation retreat will be held on Sat., Nov. 6th at

Prairie Star Ranch.

"All you who are thirsty, come to the water!"

God, who is rich in mercy, invites us again and again

to walk more closely with Him and to invite others to

do the same. Do you know someone whose walk with the Lord is heading to the Catholic Church? Someone

who yearns for the grace of the sacraments or is curi-

ous about Church teaching?

Invite him or her to call Chris Brown (913-724-1665)

to learn more about the inquiry process. Classes

begin in September!

Chris can also be reached via email

at [email protected].

The Catholic Women’s Organization (CWO) will

meet on Tues., August 10, at 6:30 pm in the parish

hall. All ladies of the parish are invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided by Joyce Bowlin and

Margaret Baker.

Catholics Did You Know?

We’ve heard stories about angels in the Bible, on TV

shows, and books. However, sometimes there is some

confusion about them. St. Augustine says, “Angel is

the name of their office” but is not their nature. Their

nature is spirit. Even though they are purely spiritual creatures, God gave them intelligence and will. The

Church says they surpass in perfection all visible

beings save, obviously, Our Lord Jesus Christ and

His Blessed Mother. Angels are the servants and

messengers of God, present since creation. Angels are immortal, always beholding the face of God and

glorifying Him.

Angels have served God’s purposes throughout the

history of salvation. God has used them to serve as

part of his divine plan, and sent them as his messen-

gers to Abraham, St. Joseph, our Blessed Mother,

and to announce Christ’s birth to the shepherds.

They protected and ministered to Christ during His Infancy, Temptation in the Desert, and Agony in the

Garden.

The Catechism tells us the whole life of the Church

benefits from the mysterious help of angels. They are

invoked in our Catholic Mass, at baptism, and during

the Christian burial rite. After Mass we pray to St.

Michael to protect and defend us from Satan and all the evil spirits. Just as angels are there to help and

protect us, the fallen angels (evil spirits) are trying to

destroy us by separating us from God. The Catechism

says, “Beside each believer stands an angel as protec-

tor and shepherd” leading us to life with Christ. So

whenever you may be in trouble, have a difficult situation, or need heavenly assistance, remember to

pray to your guardian angel!
