OLIVOIL PCA

Olivoil PCA is a new and innovative functional active ingredientof vegetable derivation for cosmetic use.

Olivoil PCA is an active principle able to provide the skinwith the benefits of the moisturising effect of PCA , togetherwith the benefits of the unsaturated fatty acids from OliveOil.

Olivoil PCA provides the skin with smoothness, nutrients, reduction of trans-epidermis dehydration, renovation of thenormal barrier function , normal keratinisation and anti-desquamation.

CO-SURFACTANT ACTIVITY

Olivoil PCA, being a Lipoprotein , could alsobe employed as co-surfactant by assisting theprimary cosmetic detergent surfactant to respectthe hydrolipidic surface film of the skin.

Generally, detergents cause the decrease ofthe skin’s natural moisturising ability, byattacking the horny layer which consequentlybecomes unable to maintain the correct levelof moisture, causing dryness and desquamation.

The wellbeing of the horny layer dependson the maintenance of an adequate waterlevel in the skin .

In normal conditions, the water level inthe horny layer is between 20-35%; thisquantity of water gives the horny layerthe essential characteristics of softness, flexibility and elasticity.

The horny layer is made up of 30% ofmoisturizing substances, 12% lipids and58% of keratin.

The 30% of these moisturizing substances(which go under the name of NMF )aresoluble in water and have water bondingproperties: their function is to give thehorny layer water bonding capacities;PCA forms 12% of NMF.

The lipids of the horny layer come fromthe lamellar bodies of the epidermis andare composed of a complex mixture ofcholesterol, free fatty acids, unsaturatedfatty acids and ceramides. These lipidsbond with the protein shell of thecorneocytes and have a selectivepermeability moisturising role. Because allof this, it can be seen how both thehydrophilic (NMF) and lypophilicsubstances are important in maintainingthe correct hydration level of the cutis.

ORIGIN

Olivoil PCA supplies the skin both with fatty acids and PCA: as regards the skin, thehydrolytic enzymes act on the amide group dissolving the molecule into fatty acids and PCAnecessary for the skin’s well-being.

Olivoil PCA lowers the irritating capacity of the primary surfactant improving compatibilityand co-existence with the detergent thereby maintaining the integrity and moisture of thehorny layer of the epidermis.

APPLICATIONS

Olivoil PCA is recommended wherever humectant and emollientfunctional active principles are required in products for treatmentof the skin .

As a delicate surfactant ,which does not alter the balance of thehorny layer of the epidermis maintaining the hydration intact,Olivoil PCA improves the sensorial characteristics of the detergent.

It can be used as a humectant in gels, tonics, lotions for the skinespecially on the face and eyes surroundings.

The use of Olivoil PCA is the only way, in products with an aqueous base, to introducelipids. With this ingredient the formulation remains clear, although normally it would requirethe use of dissolving agents, which would leave a knownly sticky effect on the skin.
