SEASONAL INSPIRATION

Food and shoes. What’s not to like? I love both, and cooking and shoemaking are more alike than one may think. Both multi-sensory experiences, chefs are just as particular

as shoemakers, sourcing only the richest and finest colours, textures and flavours to complement their main ingredients. The very best are not afraid to challenge

conventional methods and preparations to reach a further threshold of flavour and experience and this is something I also strongly believe in.

For this Autumn/Winter ’14 collection, I have been inspired by my love of cooking and dining and have sourced only the finest local leathers and materials across each of the styles. Key ingredients from caviar grain leathers to antiqued Italian materials have been used, with a focus on creating texture and hue with every design. Italian shoes and boots have been given heavier sole units to give them a distinctive and

practical update for the cooler seasons and copper elements adorn a number of styles, reminiscent of the kitchen utensils I use for every day cooking.

From Goodyear welted derby brogues and St. Moritz soled boots to refined Italian dress shoes and tamponato wholecut leather oxfords, this new season collection has a number of styles suitable and delectable to appeal to a variety of tastes that, as always

for Sweeney, aim to challenge convention and stay one step ahead.

The beauty of the wholecut is that by using a single piece of leather for the upper it minimises the use of seams, giving the shoes

a very sleek profile.

And if you like fascinating shoe facts (as we clearly do), what’s also interesting about wholecut shoes is that they actually have to be cut twice! The shaping process, which incorporates heat, pressure and

time, stretches the leather meaning it has to be cut for a second time. The results are sleek and elegant with refined detail and understated simplicity. This season, for the first time, we are introducing a camel

hide, vegetable tanned leather to our wholecut collection. Camel hide has ten times as many fibres per square centimetre as a cow hide and as a result the leather is extremely tough and durable. The simplicity of the look belies the complexity of the process, but you’ll know every

time you wear them.

Welcome to the appealingly named Novoli, where the vamp and quarters are all one piece and the quarter is both overlayed and underlayed (a very distinctive Sweeney pattern). A derby boot with three eyelets and hand stitched facing detail, we designed this boot because it’s the ultimate heavier Italian formal boot with a more contemporary feel.The Sweeney detail makes it distinct from the run of the mill derby boot and the Antik calf leather adds an air of sophistication, whether you need it or not… £349

A blake sewn shoe or boot (also known as a blake stitch construction) is renowned for its elegant design and refined fit and is most commonly used for formal shoes or dress shoes. Made by lasting the upper to a leather insole and then stitching it directly to the sole, the construction allows for the sole to be trimmed closer to the edge of the upper, resulting in a fine, formal shape. The construction also gives the shoe a supple and lighter feel as it doesn’t require the rib mechanism commonly used in a Goodyear welted shoe. The result of

this is a shoe that doesn’t need wearing in, is highly durable and, when the time comes, can easily be repaired.

We make all of our blake sewn shoes in the Marche region of Italy, the beating heart of excellent shoemaking. Our factory is run by a third generation shoe manufacturer, a man who can operate every relevant machine and knows the trade inside out. Each of our blake sewn shoes are made with only the finest leathers from around the world. This season, details like caviar grain, antique

leather and tamponato leather have all been given their own distinctive patina and depth of colour that makes the leather come alive. There’s a certain Italian expertise to finishing leathers that gives an impeccable finish and it’s why we

only trust these artisans to craft this style of shoe.

We have always been known for our innovative and interesting last shapes and this season in the factory we came up with the idea of putting a ridge on the toe. When we pulled the leather over the last we loved the way the facets played with the light, both interesting and beautiful, resulting in a clean, sculpted finish. We’ve worked hard at retaining the craftsmanship of a technique

The juxtaposition of a classic brogue boot with the modern technology of the Fin Project sole gives us this very contemporary looking style. A boot for today, if you like. This boot and shoe were inspired by our Cobbler-in-Chief ’s grandfather’s favourite shoes (which we have stored safely in the archives). This Sweeney vulcanised lace to toe shoe is hand built and then baked in an enormous oven for 20 minutes at 120 degrees centigrade to cure the natural rubber outsole. Baked in an oven you say? It takes all sor ts to make our collection of shoes and this is a wonderful winter casual. £99

London - The world centre of all things cool and contemporary and the home of Oliver Sweeney and its designer studio, this collection comes

with the kind of hipster attitude that London is infused with. Think street food, post work Negronis and an abundance of beards and you’re in the

ballpark. Sweeney London, the very cool, younger brother.

Our Sweeney London trainers are all made using a vulcanised

construction, whereby the shoe is made around a metal last and then the sole is hand built using strips of raw rubber, still in their natural sticky state. Once complete, it’s baked in an oven for 20 minutes which cures

the rubber to a long lasting and durable finish. Clean lines for cool times.
