“Short games win Championships. the new indoor golf center will allow our student athletes the opportunity to develop their short game year round.

the center will give us a competitive advantage against our competition

but most importantly, it will allow us to recruit, teach and develop the best players in junior golf. at Ohio State, we are in pursuit of Championships.” – Coach Darr

“Our new facility will be the finest indoor practice facility in the nation. the design will allow us to practice nearly every shot inside of 50 yards that the

game requires. the state of the art facility will allow our players to be sharp every day of the year with their short game while improving their full swings and developing sound mechanics. the facility will allow us to

attract the top players in the game throughout the world to Ohio State. Players can practice, workout, study and relax all under one roof. it truly will be a home away from home.” – Coach Hession

“Building the OSU indoor Golf Facility on the OSU Golf Club property will be a natural addition. the Club thrives from

the positive exposure of both golf teams. this facility will be the best in the

nation to give our players an opportunity to develop into top players/teams in the na-tion. the OSU Golf Club is a direct benefactor of their proven success.”– Marc Lucas, general manager

tHe oHio state university varsity inDoor GoLf CenterWhile the Scarlet and Gray Courses are magnificent facilities, inclement weather impedes the ability of the student-athletes to develop their talents and skills during the winter months. For up to five months of the year, outdoor golf practice facilities may be rendered unusable. Currently, the men’s and women’s golf teams make do with less than adequate winter practice space in French Field house and the Woody hayes athletic Center. they do not have a permanent, dedicated space in which to train, nor do they have access to short game practice facilities. Due to the demand on the Field house and WhaC by 16 teams, and academic schedules, the golf team has limited practice time. to attract the most talented young golfers nationally, the golf programs are in need of a new indoor practice facility - their classroom - wherein they can hone their skills during the winter months. an indoor practice facility, a priority for the Department of athletics, is the key element missing when top-tier recruits and their parents visit Ohio State. a new indoor center for men’s and women’s golf will include a state-of-the-art practice facility, along with office and student-athlete space. the center will be located with the Ohio State University Golf Course, giving the student-athletes a place to call home. elements of the new facility include: three practice greens (two bent grass, one Bermuda grass), two sand traps, a grass bunker, flat putting area with filming capability, tee boxes with filming capability and a four corner net system, fitness room, coaches and assistant coaches’ offices, conference room, team locker rooms, video analysis room, team lounge, trophy lounge for recruits and parents, and space for club storage and repairs. this facility will level the playing field against teams that can practice year round in warmer climates and teams with existing facilities. the men’s and women’s golf programs are currently competitive within the Big ten Conference, and occasionally vie for national championship play. With private investment in a new practice facility, the golf programs will have all the key ingredients to achieve their vision of consistently competing for Big ten and NCaa championships. Private support has traditionally afforded the athletic program the “margin of excellence” that is not possible with state funds or annually generated revenues. an investment now in the Golf Center provides Ohio State the opportunity to provide an urgently needed practice facility and achieve competitive excellence in two of its premier athletic programs: women’s and men’s golf. as coaches and student-athletes carry on the proud tradition of Buckeye golf, many future greats will sharpen their talents at the Golf Center. Perhaps the Golf Center will be the place where the next Jack Nicklaus prepares himself for competitive success, and the creation of another spectacular legacy.

Sincerely,

Gene Smith
