Message from the President’s Pen

create some interest – get involved! My last article dealt about having everyone getting involved and setting New years Resolutions. I also mentioned to not sit on the sidelines and criticize. Make your Lodge a place that you would want to visit daily or 2 or 3 times a week. Provide an atmosphere that is pleasant and appealing to everyone. My travels throughout the state show a variety of activities. I happened to travel to the Fremont Moose Family Center for the District 10 meeting in February. The Lodge was nicely decorated with Valentines and the purpose was to raise funds for Moose Charities. They have an exceptional board of officers that work as a cohesive unit. They mentioned that Kalya and Dale Tanis provided the motivation on this project. Travels to the Lapeer Moose Lodge found me enjoying a variety of chili in a District 12 fundraiser and Vi Willey was the chair for this event. Then it is off to the Lewiston Moose Lodge to take part in the Wertz Warriors presentation. Get Involved, be active and make the Lodge the place that you would want to visit. The month of April finds a lot of exciting events occurring in the state. Let’s start first with the visits by Supreme Governor Wes Crowder. The Lodges that he will visit are Caro, St. Clair Shores, Westland and ypsilanti with several meet and greets along the way. There are several Council of higher Degree banquets planned for the month of April. Council of higher Degree International Director Bob Neff will be visiting the West Michigan Area in May. The month of June finds us visiting Mooseheart for graduation activities and the Pilgrim Conferral. We just finished having an exceptional Mid-year Conference. Please be informed the WOTM lead the LOOM in attendance and donations of money. They have raised the bar and the men need to rise to the challenge. It was nice to have a Tommy Moose Presentation and a Moose youth Awareness student for the Council of higher Degree lunch. Special thank you to Britney Sanchez for taking time out of her busy schedule to speak about the Moose youth Awareness Program. It was nice to honor Bob Beardsley and Carole Bouchard on Saturday night. We also cannot forget Mr. Moose, Eddie DelSasso for signing 650 members. We have until the end of April to take advantage of the no fee program. Lets make a push so we can be a plus in membership when we end the year. Also remember that when you sign up two members your dues are paid for the upcoming year. have a great holiday and we look forward to starting the fiscal year in May at a plus in membership.

my moose Brothers and sisters of the moose: Now is the time. With no fees, every Lodge and Chapter in Michigan should be signing members for ABC dollars only. That's $34 for men and $25 for women. Remember that campaign? Now Is The Time! With only April left at the reduced fee it should be easier to sign members. Always carry an Application with you, you never know when you will have a chance to sign a member. One time when I was at the hospital with Josephine, I was sitting in the lobby waiting room. When a gentleman came in with his wife. She went away with a nurse, and he sat down beside me. We started talking and the first thing you know we were talking Moose. he said he was a member once but gave it up. I started to tell him what we were about and what do you know he asked me to sign him up again! I went out to the car to get an application, there were some others in there listening to what I said, so I took five applications in with me. Josephine came out and said she was sorry I had to wait so long. I told her I didn't think she was gone very long and the guy sitting beside me said I was busy signing Moose Members. I did pretty good that day because I signed four while I was waiting. Not too bad. One day I signed three former members at the casino. That was when Mt. Pleasant was still around. No matter what you do when signing members make sure you tell them what we are about. The young at Mooseheart and the aged at Moosehaven, the Community Service we do and all the other opportunities we have to offer. With the hight cost of everything and the economy not so good people are staying closer to home. If you have a good program at the Lodge I am sure they will come out. I know in small towns things are rough. Gas and groceries keep going up in fact most things are going up. Wages or retirement are shrinking. When I retired 27 years ago the money I got was great. Today its not so great. As long as you watch yourself you can get by. Be like me, I eat my meals at the Lodge everyday. From four to eight dollars I get a good meal. If you spend eight dollars a day at the Moose it only cost you $56.00 to eat for a week! If you go to the grocery store

and buy $56.00 worth of groceries...you don't get very much, it lasts about three days. So go to the Lodge. you will be helping them and yourself. In my 47 years in the Moose I have always believed in their programs. Maybe some more than others, but they always had a way of work-ing out. I thought we had a very good Conference. Our Executive Board is working on some very good programs to help the Lodge out. Remember we have to work with them to make the programs work for all of us. I want to thank them for having a very nice night in my honor. I always said one thing about the Moose, If you have it coming, you will get it. If we do the job we are supposed to do, it will come to you faster. Right now I'm not doing as much as I should be doing. Being an Administrator again in these times make the job harder and more time consuming. Remember the saying "whatever it takes". So with all of us working together lets get the job done we set out to do. Remember May 1, 2012 starts a new year. Those signing members for dues will have a brand new start. A lot of members don't know that our fiscal year runs from May 1 to April 30. you have to explain this to them that are getting members for dues. I have run into a couple of problems, but got them straightened out. So lets all finish the year with a bang! I forgot to mention what a great guests we had at our Conference. Our General Governor Steve Green, and The WOTM official guest Wendy Matthew, Member International Activities Committee. What good people they are! We thank them for being our guest. I also want to thank the Executive Board for the fine job they did. I want to also thank all the Moose Members that took time to shake my hand, arn't people wonderful!

deaR MiChigan Moose MeMbeRs,you are making a difference in more lives than you can imagine and should be extremely proud of yourselves. I know I am! I appreciate all your help and support during the past five years regarding the Gimme 5 campaign. your generous financial donations in addition to the items donated for our Miscellaneous Raffles are greatly appreciated. Special thanks go out to the Gimme 5 chairman and members who assisted working in the booth, selling tickets, and working in the WOTM meeting room. you have always been there for me when called upon and “thank you” just doesn’t seem to convey my appreciation. you were my right and left arms; keeping in touch with the members of your Chapters and Lodges and by having fundraisers at Chapter, Lodge, and District lev-els. Lastly, for helping when I needed extra hands to get the tasks done especially when I had to attend Moose Charities board meetings or Confer-ences as an Official Visitor. While in Frankenmuth, we collected an additional $3,187.17 for Gimme 5. Total contributions not including what I just mentioned for the State of Michigan is $194,119.55! As this program concludes in Tampa, we are excited about a new program will be introduced. I am looking forward to your continued assistance in promoting it as well. The Michigan Moose Association has entered into an agreement with Legal Shield (previously called Prepaid Legal). With your membership you are entitled to receive legal advice, 24/7 emergency assistance, letters and phone calls on your behalf, legal document review, and audit services. Included in this package you receive a free standard will and as an added BONUS Moose Charities receives a $10.00 donation in your name! The next topic I would like to discuss is Tribute gifts. There is no bet-ter way to pay our respects to those members who have passed away by making a donation in their memory. I would want my legacy to be carried on with a tribute gift in lieu of flowers. Another suggestion would be to remember Moose Charities, Mooseheart, and Moosehaven in your estate planning. For further information, check out our Planned Giving portal at: http://moosecharities.giftlegacy.com. We need mentors; those who are or

will become members of the Defending Circle Society to help us spread the word. We can also honor our living members who earn higher degrees or are appointed to positions in the Fraternity with honor donations. Each lodge needs to make available the Tribute donation envelopes designed for “in honor” or “in memory” of gifts. The envelopes are free and available from Moose Charities plus shipping & handling. you can also submit them online at: www.moosecharities.org/store/wish/Tribute.asp. By the way, “in honor” or “in memory” gifts do not have to be for Moose members; they could be for any individual you wish. Since the beginning of the year I am proud to advise you that on be-half of the Michigan Moose Association, we have submitted the following benefiting Moose Charities and Mooseheart Child City and School: 2,250 BoxTops for Education coupons 702 BONUS BoxTops for Education coupons 1,660 Campbell UPS labels ** 12 boxes consisting of snack bags 1 box consisting of toothpaste tubes/toothbrushes,

spread containers, cheese packaging, and inkjets ** 2 boxes consisting of candy wrappers, cookie wrappers

and cellphones **** Still in the process of sorting and counting so additional totals will be in my next article.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions. I can be reached at 248-561-0831 or by email at: [email protected]. See you in August! On behalf of our children and seniors, thank you!!!

Moose Charities

If you haven't, you will soon. Moose International, which supervises an four-nation organization of more than 1.1 million men and women, announced today a pilot campaign for what ultimately would be the largest public-education program in the history of the organization. The campaign, Heard of Moose?, is designed to raise general awareness of the Moose organization, its endeavors for children and teens in need (most notably at Mooseheart Child City & School west of Chicago), for its senior members (the Moosehaven retirement community near Jacksonville, FL) and its community service. The four-month pilot program launched in Tampa on April 1 and will continue to coincide with the 2012 International Moose Convention taking place in downtown Tampa there from June 29 - July 4. The organization expects up to 10,000 men and women members from across the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Bermuda to travel to Tampa to participate in the convention. According to Tampa's convention bureau, the International Moose Convention will be Tampa Bay's third largest convention this year. "We have a strong base of 27,000 women and men Moose members in 26 Lodges throughout the Tampa area. We want to show the rest of Tampa - from young families to retirees -that the Moose provides opportunities to help kids and seniors, and to give back to the community, all

while having a lot of fun," said William B. Airey, Moose International's Director General and Chief Executive Officer. "Like most fraternal organizations, we're trying to get the word out about what we do, to a changing society. By the end of this campaign, not only will you have heard of Moose, but we think you might want to become one, too," he added. The integrated marketing program throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas counties includes paid adver- tisements -- including outdoor billboards, bus exteriors, bus shelters, radio and newspapers -- coupled with media relations, social-media outreach and a public Open House at the Tampa Convention Center on Friday evening, June 29 (go to www.heardofmoose.org for details). Advertising for the Heard of Moose? campaign will incorporate a variety of media. Vibrantly colored images will focus on action-oriented people demonstrating key aspects of the Moose mission, including 1) caring for the young; 2) caring for seniors; 3) community service; and 4) celebrating life. All creative components will tie to the call to action: Go to HeardOfMoose.org. Beginning April 1, high profile advertisements begin running on more than 50 billboards (vinyl and digital) on highly trafficked streets and highways throughout the Tampa area. More than 120 bus shelters will feature large display advertisements reaching thousands of

individuals driving and walking to their next location. Approximately 45 buses, wrapped in the Heard of Moose? campaign design, will travel throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. In addition, radio advertisements run on country music and news stations throughout Tampa. An eight-page, Heard of Moose? special section will be inserted in the Tampa Bay Tribune and Tampa Bay Times on Sunday, June 24. The insert, which will feature numerous articles about Moose programs and its members, will provide potential Moose members with a more in-depth look at the organization and encourage them to visit the website and contact the organization for membership information. And, throughout the duration of the campaign, each of the 26 Moose facilities within a 50-mile radius of downtown Tampa have been provided with a special 4-by-8-ft. banner, closely following the campaign's graphics but carrying the message: "Heard of Moose? Here We Are!"

horSeShoe’S in the winter? The Birch Run Moose Lodge held their 7th annual Snowshoe Tournament, Sat Feb. 18th at the Birch Run Lodge. Entries were down this year only 9 teams showed up to brave the cold. Mother Nature did smile on us by dropping 3 inch’s of snow the night before the tournament. The bonfire and sunshine during the tournament helped to keep the player in a warm mood. The double elimination tournament took about 4 hrs. All the money raised goes to the improvements to our horseshoe pits. The winners of the Tournament were Don Ogle Jr, and Robb Webb. 2nd place went to Lori Daniels and Todd Daniels. 3rd place went to Joanne and Al Manthey. We want to thank everyone who participated

Wertz Warriors at Lewiston Moose

Women from Richmond

A Thank You From Carole

On February 9th the Wertz Warriors visited Lewiston Moose 2495 to receive checks. Regional Manager Dave Coffey and President Gary Kluzak were in attendance to welcome the riders.

Dave announced that so far the Michigan Moose together with Moose International were able to raise a whopping $27,751.21 for the Wertz Warriors.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Michigan Moose Association for honoring Bob Beardsley and myself at the recent Mid-Year Conference. here have been so many memories over the last 45 years...and earning the respect of your peers and having the fun we have while helping others — what more could we ask out of life? One of my fondest memories was at a 25 club party when Kenny Rogers was there (impersonator) and I was singing with him as Dolly Parton! Again, thank you so much and may the Lodges and Chapters in Michigan have much success in the new year! Fraternally and in friendship, Carole Bouchard
