HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY TO US ALL!

The temperature’s rising, summer is upon us and the Lakes Pool is open for everyone to enjoy. Starting June 1, we have opened the front entrance of the Clubhouse and our Pool is open without any reservations needed.

We have always required a reservation for Tennis, Pickleball, Basketball, and Volleyball, but prior to Covid, you would call the front desk at the Clubhouse to make those reservations.

We will continue to use the popular and easy-to-use Sign-Up Genius online to reserve your time in those areas. Check out our new, updated protocols for the Lakes Beach and Tennis Club on our web site, www.thelakesoftempe.com.

I have a few reminders in several different areas. First, if you are making any changes to the exterior of your home (front or the back if you are on the water) such as any new planting, removing your grass, adding a wall, or painting your house, you are required to submit an Architectural Application to our Architectural Committee for review.

Please be aware that our lake is definitely not for swimming. No paddleboards or inflatables of any kind are allowed on the water. Our insurance does not allow for these activities or water craft.

I also want to remind everyone that there is a leash law with the City of Tempe and in our Lakes community.

I have had several reports of dogs off leashes attacking other dogs and people. There are no dog parks within the Lakes, so if you wish to take your dog off leash, take them to an officially recognized dog park.

We are a very pet-friendly community, but we also must be aware that we have many people walking in and around the community who don’t wish to be confronted by loose dogs. And it is a city ordinance. Please keep your dogs on a leash.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. 480-838-1023.

    Christine

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of The Lakes and it also celebrates the 49th Anniversary of living at The Lakes for one of its residents, Nancy Henneberry. Nancy moved into her home on Northshore Drive in August of 1972 along with her husband Tom and 4 children Nanci, Tom Jr., Pam, and Mike.

The family moved to The Lakes from

Washington DC when Tom was transferred for his job with the US Department of Agriculture as an Entomologist. Tom was the Laboratory Director and Research Leader of the then newly opened Western Cotton Research Laboratory in Phoenix.

Nancy was born in Framingham, Massachusetts.

She met Tom when she was 16 years old while working at a dress store in town when Tom, a student at the University of Massachusetts, was home for the Easter weekend.

After marrying in June of 1951, Tom and Nancy

moved to Florida then on to Utah, Maryland,

California back to Maryland and ended up here at The Lakes in Tempe where she has resided for 49 years. Tom and Nancy were married for 65 years when he sadly passed away in November of 2016.

Nancy and Tom were avid tennis and bridge

players. They were involved community members at The Lakes for 4 decades. Tom was a past president of The Lakes Community Association and Nancy a member of the Lakes Women’s Club and they both served on The Lakes Social Committee for many years. While raising their 4 children Nancy was also very involved in the East Valley Assistance League, PEO Chapter AL, Tempe Sister Cities, and gave her time to many other philanthropic organizations.

Nancy and Tom enjoyed traveling extensively

within the United States as well as internationally to Spain, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Pakistan, Ireland, England, and France. They also were lucky enough to spend many summers at their home in Pinetop, AZ where they enjoyed the mountains, cool weather and where Tom loved to fish.

Although the pandemic this year put a damper on

Nancy’s social life and left her feeling more isolated than she likes. She has made it through with the support of her many special friends checking in on her as well as family members that are carrying on the tradition of living at The Lakes; son, Mike; son-in-law and daughter, John and Pam Kane; and granddaughter, Katlyn.

Nancy also has a daughter, son-in-law and

grandson that live in Port Townsend, WA; Nancy, Dave, and Alex Pitkethly. Her granddaughter Maddie has recently moved back to Tempe from Flagstaff. Nancy’s oldest son Tom, Jr. the IV, passed away in December of 2018.

Now that she is vaccinated, Nancy is slowing

getting back into meeting with friends and playing bridge again. She still loves to garden and if you are ever on Northshore Drive you may see her out front planting and taking care of her geraniums or hanging out with Riley her son’s yellow lab or cat Camille.

IN MEMORIAM . . . MARY KATHLEEN SMITH LINDY

Mary Kathleen Smith Lindy died on April 23 of Alzheimer’s disease, which she lived with for thirteen years. Kay was born in 1932 to James and Mary Biser Aspel in Madison, Wisconsin.

She was the middle of five children and attended St. Bernard Elementary School and Edgewood High School, where she graduated at 17. She completed her nursing degree at St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota where the students were educated by The Sisters of St. Francis and trained at the Mayo Clinic. In addition to an excellent education at St. Mary's, Kay made lifelong friends, with whom she shared a love of science, some good trouble, and the compassion of their Catholic faith, a faith she lived by throughout her life.

Kay returned to Madison to the Veteran's Hospital where she met Wayne Smith, a tuberculosis patient given only a few months to live. The rebel in Kay, together with her faith, dismissed this diagnosis and she and Wayne were happily married for twenty-five years before he died in 1979. They moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1960, where they reared seven children. Kay continued her nursing career at Doctor's Hospital in Phoenix and Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, where she was a staff nurse, supervisor, head nurse and the nursing manager of the Emergency Department eventually being

promoted to the Ambulatory Division Director. She also continued her education in hospital administration at the University of Phoenix. She constructed a model for a "mobile emergency unit," which ultimately became the foundation for ambulatory services in the Valley, the standard of practice for expanded services which continues today. Kay did her thesis on the 10-hour workday, which she implemented for the emergency room staff. This supported a better work-life balance, employment satisfaction and increased productivity, and most importantly to Kay, resulted in a higher quality of care for the patients. Kay lived in Scottsdale for over fifty years.

Kay's last formal position was with the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation. For several years she travelled around the country and internationally as an Emergency Room Consultant and surveyor. Kay was joined in her travels by Raymond Lindy, whom she married in 1980. They had a very happy full fifteen years before Ray died unexpectedly. In addition to grandparenting eighteen grandkids, they volunteered with New Song, an organization for bereaved children.

In 'retirement' Kay's volunteer activities are too numerous to list, but among the range of roles she served in was as a Eucharistic minister and dockworker at St. Mary's food bank, she also worked weekly at Mission of Mercy. She was very active in her community at The Lakes in Tempe.

She loved to bowl, bike, rollerblade, dance, play mahjong, take her grandkids on adventures, and

grow roses. She spent the last seven years of her life with her companion Tom Mayer, whom she met at church.

Kay was an avid mahjong player, served on several Lakes committees, and could frequently be seen riding her bike around the neighborhood offering her sassy views on life. She will be missed by her Lakes neighbors and friends.

She is also predeceased by her parents, her sister Peggy Aspel Whitbeck and a brother, James Aspel.

She is survived by seven children: Kathy Hoffman (Jim); Mike Smith (Debbie); Gigi Sloss (Henry); Tim Smith (Sarah); Pati Vester (Charlie); Dan Smith (Susan); Andy Smith (Diana); eighteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Dr. Thomas Aspel of California and her sister Pat Clark of Wisconsin. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews and a world of friends. She will be deeply missed and her generous spirit, bravery and compassion will remain an inspiration to us all.

Pet Drive Thank You The Lakes Woman’s Club would like to send

many thanks out to our very generous community for their support of our Helping Hands events this past year.

Our involvement in our three schools in our neighborhood, Rover Elementary, Fees Middle

School, and Marcos de Niza High School, had so many people come forward with donations of money, gift cards, toys, food, reusable shopping bags, hygiene products, socks and clothing.

Our Pet Drive on May 8th for Sojourner Center for domestic abuse pet shelter. Was a big success. We ended up with my suburban full of all sorts of things they need and a large monetary donation.

I am so proud of our community. We truly have made a difference in so many people’s lives this year who needed help.

Thank you so much for being part of the Women’s Club in this very different year. But we as a community still pulled off great giving events to people in need.

    Alecia Kindgren

  • What a great morning it was for Pictures With Your Pet sponsored by the Lakes Women's Club. We had a great turnout and received some generous donations for Sojourner Pet Companion Center.

Thank you to everyone who came out and contributed to this worthy cause.
