Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Grace and peace to you on this Good Shepherd Sunday! As you may have read in the news, health experts and elected officials are currently determining new guidelines for the opening up of the economy and ease restrictions. It’s important to understand that things won’t immediately go back to normal. We know the de-sire to once more participate in public Mass and receive the Eucharist is very strong in each of us. However, we must approach this next phase with a patient and loving mindset. Many of you have communicated to me that you desire very much to receive the Eucharist, which is the source and summit of our Catholic faith. As we continue to wait for the day when we can once more as a faith community congregate together to hear the Word of God and be fed by His Precious Body, let us prac-tice patience and love for the good of those who are most vulnerable and at high risk. As we wait, may the Lord expand our hearts so that the more we hunger for Jesus, the Bread of Life, the greater our desire for God will grow and the more passionately we will seek to know and love Him and dedicate our-selves to Him. If we look into Church history, this is not the first time the Church has taken such actions to combat the spread of disease, and that cancelling public cel-ebration of the Mass doesn’t mean the faithful are unable to receive the graces of the Eucharist. On the contrary, the Eucharist is at work and operative in the whole Church, in each one of us, even though we’re not participating through the reception of Holy Communion during the celebration of the Mass. Whenever and wherever the Mass is celebrat-ed, even by the priest alone, it is done so on behalf of the whole Body of Christ all over the world, which is each one of us. Those graces of those Masses are benefitting the Body of Christ, whether we’re at Mass or not. That’s why I’ve encourage each of you to continue making those acts of spiritu-al communion. I hope that you are all in good physical and spiritual health. Remember to unite your sufferings, hardship and discomforts with the Passion and suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that you may be sanctified and the whole Body of Christ may benefit from your offering. Be assured of my continued prayers for you each day at Mass. Sincerely yours in Christ, Msgr. Peter Bui

Until the time when we can worship together in church, continue to join us for

During this time of uncertainty, we are blessed with a wonderful parish community that is coming together to support each other during these difficult times. We are working hard to stay connected with our parish family through the parish website, parish-wide emails, printed material, phone calls, and our FACEBOOK (www.facebook.com/HolySpiritTempe) page which includes LIVE STREAM Sunday Masses at 11:00 a.m. and Daily Masses at 8:00 a.m. If you have not been receiving the parish-wide emails, please reach out to parish office with your email address to ensure receiving future parish notifications. Our parish depends on the Sun-day plate collection, e-giving tithing, and contributions mailed to the parish office, which allow us to meet our parish expenses each week. With the suspension of our Masses, your financial gifts of loose cash, checks, and offertory envelopes, received through the weekly collection are now not received each week. Setting up week-ly, or monthly, e-giving tithing through FAITH DIRECT is an easy and secure way to ensure that your finan-cial gift is received. Through FAITH DIRECT, you are always able to make changes to your financial gift as needed. If you need assistance with FAITH DIRECT e-giving, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office, (480) 838-7474.

We welcome the day when we can worship together again and altogether continue to minister to our parish community through spiritual growth, social outreach, liturgical celebrations, and religious education.

SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES May 3

Call Philip the gospel’s “Answer Man.” “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed Jesus “the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets” (John 1:45). Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8). Jesus had three last questions for Philip: “You still don’t know me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his murderers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22).
