The summer is flying by. If you haven’t been able to find time to enjoy it, you better hurry up. Get in a few more golf games, swims, picnics or whatever. We’ll be shivering before you know it. Likewise, if you’ve been meaning to get more involved with the Knights, and haven’t gotten around to it, there’s no time like the present. Join our successes.

It looks like we’re on a role! As many of you know, our Annual Family Picnic was another great success. Joe Stafford and his crew certainly havethis one all figured out. Some of the scholarship thank you notes are quite touching.

We hosted the Mary, Help of Persecuted Christians Icon. Jay Cappello volunteered to transport the Icon back and forth between our churches for both weekends. It was great to see everyone come together for the Prayer Service. Our Knights, especially the 4th Degree, showed we’re a classy and devoted group.

We were also able to help Ed McCann, Past State Deputy and Past DistrictDeputy of our Council, in his dire need. He desperately needed a wheelchair ramp, and one of ours fortuitously became available. The process was quite complicated, and I’ll spare you the details. Because of the scholarship awards, the council issued many (48) checks. With other approved donations, the checking account balance went down by over $80,000. Membership remains at 245.

Committee Reports – GK Ron takes the gavel in DGK Rick's absence.

Membership/Admissions - Norm ComeauNorm said that summer is a quiet time for recruiting. Nothing happening right now.

Culture of Life - Dennis Groulx and Ron BourqueTwo organizations we support are having fund raiser banquets in October...

The New Hampshire Right To Life Benefit Banquet will be Thursday, Oct 3 at the Executive Court (So. Mammoth Rd in Manchester) at 5:30PM; see link; more info later. The featured speaker is Terry Beatley, the author of What If We’ve Been Wrong? Keeping my promise to America’s “Abortion King”. She promised Dr. Bernard Nathanson, co-founder of NARAL, to arm Americans with the truth of how he deceived America with the lie that abortion is healthcare. Terry is president of Hosea Initiative, an educational organization, focused on changing hearts and minds about abortion by shar-ing this revealing truth. Tickets are $65/pp,

Also, Since 1984, the Haverhill Pregnancy Care Center has brought God’s love to life through free, life-enhancing ser-vices for women, men and teens facing unplanned pregnancies. Our Annual Fundraising Banquet provides the critical support needed to save lives and lead hearts to Christ year-round. On Thursday, October 17, at the Double Tree Hotel offRt 93 (opposite the Chateau Restaurant), we will host our banquet in Andover. This year we are excited to announce our incredible guest speaker will be former Planned Parenthood Executive Director, Abby Johnson! (She was the central character of the recent film “Unplanned”. -ed) Dinner is complementary but donations will be accepted.

Coats for Kids – Paul St. Amand Paul reports that he is getting a needs survey from the local schools and charities for the fall coats program and will be placing the order in a few weeks. The St Joe's Regional School has volunteered to again host our sorting and packing party. The principal, Mary Croteau, will have 8th graders help us in the task. The coat order is placed through Supreme, and there will be a very short notice to him when the delivery is to occur. He will send out a request for volunteers when he gets the call (sometime in late September) that the coats will be delivered.

Tootsie Roll Drive – Pete Klecan

The checks from the state for our council's non-profits came in and were distributed to the agencies. This concludes the Tootsie Roll campaign of 2019. Many thanks to all who helped the project, espe-cially those volunteers from the charities we serve.

Bingo – Ron Bourque: Ron reports that the total through July already exceeds all full year totals up to 2015.The police have announced they will be raising the detail fee by $10 per hour; the Kiwanis bingo hall managers and the charities are examining this impact.

Thanks be to Paul Simard, Lou Stella, all our workers, and to Almighty God for granting us these funds to use for charity.

Check out the Face Book page at: Bingo at the Kiwanis Hall.

Blood Drive – Butch Kealey

Butch reports the last drive produced 41 pints and eight double reds. Next blood drive is to occur on September 19th 2019. Butch mentioned that the Red Cross is willing to offer CPR training to knights, however there would be a cost. More details later.

Volunteers are always welcome and needed for the blood drive.(You can see all events on our council Event Calendar – ed)

Scholarship Committee - Joe Stafford:

Joe Stafford was not present; however Gene Bryant presented a motion for Joe regarding scholarships under new business. (See report on the family day picnic, page 8. - ed)

Old BusinessThe Notice of Motion for $1,300 to be used to move a private “spiritual garden” from the home of Joan Iannazzo to the grounds of MQP was withdrawn. The statues went to Lebanon, NH.

New Business

Make a Difference Fund” – Gene Bryant spoke on three items for consideration with the Make a Difference Fund. (This fund is already budgeted and approved, but a consent vote of the council is taken at a regular meeting to insure transparency and suitability of a given item before funds are actually spent.)

There were twenty $1,000 scholarship awards given at the picnic. A suggestion was made by the scholarship committee to offer awards to the four remaining scholarship candidates whose names were not drawn. There was debate on this with points being made that “we have the money” and that “charity begins at home” versus “the $20,000 budget was approved and we should stick to the budget” and “what about the siblings of winners who were excluded, should they be included?” and “this opens up a can of worms.” A vote was called for and this proposal was defeated unanimously.

$2,676.99 to move a wheelchair ramp, recently freed up from Roland Theberge's home, to another knight, PSD Ed McCann, who is in need. The ramp will be moved from where it currently is and installed at Ed’ home. - approved unanimously.

$1,000 was approved to assist a family who is relocating their daughter from Woodbury to St. Joseph’s Regional School for the start of eight grade. The school had contacted Gene Bryant and asked for assistance for the girl asshe had been being bullied in the previous school. (See note from Gene below, page 7. ed)

Al Cormier, chairman of the parish finance council, gave an update on how the parish will be spending some of the money already budgeted by council #4442. The St. Joseph church wheelchair lift project is moving forward with a number of hurdles cleared. Also an update was given about how the parish is managing a water problem with the youth center at Julie Hall and at MQP (sidewalk flooding) via a grant from the diocese for $10,000. Al reassured the council that the parish is working hard to look at all funding sources and not just council #4442. Wethank Al for his update.

Trustees Report:

Notice of Motion for $5,000 for NH Right for Life legal expenses. To be discussed in September.(Here is the background info from Ron Bourque - ed):I just got off the phone with Betty Breuder, the Executive Director of NH Right to Life. They are the organization that runs the NH March for Life in January. Their volunteers do sidewalk counseling at the abortion mills trying to talk pregnant women out of having their abortions. They’ve recently organized a prayer vigil to stop the merger of Catholic Medical Center with Dartmouth Hitchcock because the latter does abortions, etc., etc., etc. Their efforts get them into legal battleswith Planned Parenthood.

The mission of NH Right to Life is to foster respect for human life from the moment of fertilization to natural death and to promote the right to life as the paramount social issue through educational, legislative, political, and other forms of lawful activity. Your financial support helps us carry out our mission in New Hampshire!”

Unfortunately, they are hurting financially. When I asked how much they needed, the response was, “$10,000 would be wonderful!” That’s a little high. I suggest a Notice of Motion for $5,000.

We live in one of the most abortion friendly states in the country. NH Right to Life has been doing what they can to reverse this for many years. They’ve had some successes, but not enough. Several of our Council members have been supporting them for years, and there’s always a good 4th Degree presence leading the marches.

Pathway Pregnancy Center of Littleton, NH, is having a Walk for Life 10/5/10 from 10:00 to 1:00PM and request for $500 for the walk. Motion granted.

Approved $400 for partial cost of a replacement motor for Jose Moreno's lift chair.

$20.83 to reimburse Chanel Simard for food at prayer service (Approved by a narrow margin. Only kidding, Sim! -ed)

In Past Months... in Future Months...

AMAZING SUPPORT FOR LOCAL STUDENT – from Gene BryantInformation about the $1000 school tuition item from New Business on page 4...

In July, the staff at St Joseph Regional Catholic School contacted me with a unique, and sad, request. A young girl, entering 8th Grade at the Woodbury Junior High School, was introduced to the staff at SJRCS by her single father and grandmother. They were hoping to enroll this girl at St Joe’s for her final year before High School, to avoid the constant bullying she had suffered through during her time at Woodbury.

The father was desperate to get her out of that environment, but the family had little money, and not much chance of paying the required tuition. The school, at this late date, had pretty much committed all the financial aid that they had available for the 2019 - 2020 school year. The staff turned to our Council for help, and as you know, we support the school in many substantial ways throughout the year.

My first response was, “The Council can do this with our budget,” but the second thought was, “We should all personally do this -- we can and should know how people can be helped.”

On Friday evening July 26, I blasted out an email to 35 - 40 Brother Knights about the situation, and asked for donations of a $100 or $200 from any member that could. I then watched a good John Wayne movie and went to bed. When I opened my email on Saturday morning, I had over $1700 in pledges, and by the Council Picnic on Sunday had almost $2500!

The final tally from by brother Knights ended up at $2975; the Council approved another $1000 from our budget, and the School came up with another $1000.

This girl is now enrolled, the family is most very grateful, and they will only have to come up with a few dollars for uniformsand books and such.

We love happy endings! Thank You, Thank You, Thank you! You guys are amazing -- I’m very grateful for your response. You did a real good thing here, for that young girl. God Bless You All!Gene

Family Day Picnic and Scholarship / TAPS Awards – Joe Stafford reportsCouncil 4442'sFamily Day Picnic,TAPS andScholarship Drawingwas held on July 28,and attended byapproximately 83members, family and

friends. The weather was outstanding, no one complained (I didn't hearany). The preparation started on Saturday, July 27th, with setting upthe tents, tables and chairs and purchasing and preparing of the food. We also purchased one LP 20 pound Tank, in as much as, we were missing one. A special thanks go out to Ralph Meile and Bill Richards for being one of the first, and later Dave Thompson, in on Sunday morning to start the food preparation. Also, a special thanks to Chanel Simard and Dennis Coleman for grilling/cooking outside under the tents. Father Vincent blessed us with his presence, and Dick Collopy offered the opening prayer. The food lasted, with extra/leftovers to spare. The DJ was performed by Simon McCaffery from Good Time DJ.

I want to personally thank Al Hamel and George Masciarelli, who through their perseverance and charm collected $176.00 for the 50/50 drawing. Butch Kealey won the drawing. Repeatedly, this year we had an army of volunteers which I'm truly grateful for. I just want to list a few that set up the tents, grills, table and chairs on Saturday, July 27th, and the cooking and preparation on Sunday, July 28th. So who helped? Not in any order (and I hope I miss no one)... Saturday, July 27th - Tent/Tables/Chairs/Grills set-up District Deputy Bill Richards, GK Ron Bourque, Chanel Simard, Ralph Miele, George Masciarelli, Gene Bryant, Paul St. Amand, Don Simmons, Charlie Walsh, Peter Klecan, Julian Roy, Dave Thompson, Ed Lynch, Larry Belair, Dennis Coleman, Joe Stafford.
