Lisbon Central School 6866 County Route 10 Lisbon, New York 13658

From the Superintendent Dear Parents and Residents:

Nothing causes a stir in the halls of Lisbon School like the prediction of a winter storm. It seems like the minute a winter weather advisory is announced, students are asking me if we will have a snow day! Remember, when winter weather is expected, tune into local television or radio stations, or check online at www.lisboncs.schoolwires.com. The decision to delay opening or to close is usually made between 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.

On Monday, January 23rd, two faulty sensor heads in our fire alarm system malfunctioned simultaneously, forcing us to make the decision to dismiss the students early. Since we were able to capture relatively accurate attendance on our student body , we will consider it an early dismissal day. Kudos to the cafeteria staff for quickly providing pop tarts for our students and to First Student for being calm and providing our students and staff with warm busses as we worked with custodial staff on diagnosing the issue and determining the course of action to take. The evacuation went smoothly but this is an opportune time to review your emergency plan with your child.

This newsletter contains the list of students who became FROGS members in December and January. The list is lengthy and for good reason; the school wide goal has been set for students. If

they take and pass 25,000 or more tests, then all FROGS members can watch me kiss a REAL GOAT!

Mark your calendars on March 16th and 17th, when the LCS Drama Club will present the musical Footloose. The cast and crew have been working hard since December under the direction of Ms. Whyte and Mrs. Sullivan. It promises to be an exciting event, and I’m sure you will enjoy the production.

Winter Break is February 20th – 24th. Some of you will head south for warmer weather, while others will stay here and enjoy the many winter activities we have available in the north country. Whichever you do, enjoy time with your children; it’s what matters the most.

Sincerely,

Erin E. Woods Superintendent/Elementary Principal

Guidance Office News Mrs. Putman

Now that it’s tax time, don’t forget to complete financial aid paperwork, too! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available online now. To be eligible for any type of financial aid, including student loans, the FAFSA must be filled out using the 2011 tax year information for the student and the parents. The FAFSA is available online at: www.fafsa.gov The FAFSA online is a quicker way to send in the forms and helps to flag problem answers as they are entered on the computer. The FAFSA is a free form and should not cost any money to file – be aware that other websites exist that have you fill out the FAFSA with them and pay a processing fee. IT

SHOULD BE FREE!

How safe is the college campus you want to attend? This is an important question, particularly for students attending college away from home. There is a government website that gives safety reports of 6,000 U.S. colleges and universities. Look up your college of choice at: http://ope.ed.gov/security/ SATs, ACTs, and all that jazz… Most four-year colleges require the results of the SAT or ACT standardized tests for admission decisions. The tests are sometimes required to compete for particular scholarships as well. The tests are generally taken by juniors in the spring of the junior year or seniors in the fall of the senior year. Both tests can be taken multiple times if a student wishes and are given several times per year at OFA or Canton HS on Saturdays. Students must register several weeks in advance.

The SAT will be offered on March 10, May 5, and June 2 this spring, but the registration is due more than a month before the test dates, so keep an eye on the due dates! The SAT includes critical reading, math, and writing sections, and the cost of the SAT is now $49.00. Sample tests and questions are available at the website at: www.collegeboard.com The ACT also offers an optional writing test, but students may still choose to take the traditional ACT with reading, English, math, and science sections, or can take the four sections plus writing. The ACT will be offered on April 14 and June 9, but registrations must be postmarked more than a month before that; watch those dates! The ACT assessment costs $34.00 this year, and the ACT assessment plus writing costs $49.50. If you need further information about the ACT, please refer to the website: www.actstudent.org Both the SAT and ACT have fee-waiver programs for qualified students; for example, many students receiving free or reduced-priced meals will qualify for a waiver to cover the cost of the SAT or ACT. Please see Mrs. Putman for more details. Last minute college applications? If your senior has not completed college applications yet, it may not be too late. Many schools will continue to accept applications through the spring as space permits; however, be aware that particular majors may be filling up as well. He/she may be accepted to a particular college, but not into the major of choice if slots are filled already. If your student wishes to apply and hasn’t begun the process, push them to come see Mrs. Putman immediately to begin the process. Continued on page 3

SCHOOL MUSICAL Lisbon Central School will be presenting the musical "Footloose" on March 16th and 17th. So, if you're ready to kick off the winter blues, come and enjoy, relax, and cut footloose! Also, if there is anyone in the community who has any of the following items they are willing to donate to the musical/drama club, we are in need of; men’s suit jackets, cowboy boots, 80's style clothing and accessories, police officer - type costume or hat. Please send all donations to Beth Whyte, room 103. Thank you for your support of our many talented students here at Lisbon Central. We appreciate everyone's encouragement and efforts to ensure that our production is a success.

Guidance News continued from page 2

~ Scholarships~Scholarships~

Scholarship applications continue to arrive in the guidance office. Each senior has a labeled mailbox in the guidance office in which copies of scholarship applications are placed as they arrive. Students need only to come in and periodically check their mailbox to pick up new applications. However, keep up with them and don’t let the deadlines pass you by!

There are many ways to search for scholarships but beware of scholarship scams! Whether you receive something in the mail or via the Internet, note that if something seems too good to be true, it may be. Check it out further before getting involved in a program of which you are unsure. Also, be aware that you should never have to pay for a scholarship application – any processing fee or required payment is wrong! If you are interested in searching for more scholarship ideas, check out these websites: www.fastweb.com www.collegeboard.com www.srnexpress.com www.scholarships.com www.nationalmerit.org www.wiredscholar.com www.collegeview.com www.xap.com PSAT/NMSQT & College Quick Start My College QuickStart is an easy-to-use, online, personalized college and career planning kit available free of charge to all students who take the PSAT/NMSQT. The information and answers your child provided when they took the test are incorporated into this useful tool, and it presents their data back to them in four main parts: • My Online Score Report- an enhanced

score report that allows students to review each test question, the student’s answer, and the correct answer with answer explanations.

• My SAT Study Plan- a customized SAT study plan based on student PSAT/NMSQT test performance,

highlighting skills for review and practice.

• My College Matches- A starter list of colleges based on the student’s state and indicated choice of major.

• My Major and Career Matches- Major and career matches that are compatible with the student’s general interests and personality type.

Access is available using the access code printed on the student’s paper score report, and the tool can be utilized throughout high school. Using My College QuickStart together with your child is a great way to introduce and guide your child through important aspects of the college-going process. Visit www.collegeboard.com\quickstart. Sophomores are making MAJOR educational decisions for next year. Do you know what your sophomore has decided? The 10th grade students visited Northwest Technical Center (our local vocational-technical training center) in January to view two programs of interest to each student. Sophomores are being asked to make major decisions about their high school education plans and future career plans; please talk with your child about these options if you are the parent of a sophomore. Northwest Tech offers a number of outstanding hands-on educational opportunities to our students, and every program offered now includes options to earn college credit, as well. Students attending Northwest Tech for half-day as a junior and senior will attend Lisbon the other half-day to take the required English, social studies and PE classes. Current program offerings include: Automotive Technology Building Trades Cosmetology Criminal Justice Culinary Arts Early Childhood Education Electronics Environmental Technology Graphic Communications Intro to Health Careers Precision Metalworking (welding) Allied Health (seniors only) Pre-Engineering (seniors only)

If you have any questions about the offerings, please contact us at the LCS Guidance Office or call Northwest Tech at 393-4570 to schedule a parent visit if you would like. Guidance Direct Lisbon Central School has a guidance software program which allows students to create an account and do college and occupational searches, scholarship searches, interest inventories, resume preparation, etc. The program is Guidance Direct. Any student is welcome to sign on using the information below. We encourage students to access the program in study hall from student computers and from home via the Internet, and some teachers may use the program with an entire class. Once a student creates an account, Mrs. Putman can see any saved searches or data they have completed so that we can use it with them on future plans. Students and parents are welcome to use Guidance Direct throughout the summer from any computer with Internet access. To sign on, the students can go to: www.guidancedirect.com or can link to it from the LCS website. School ID: 2339829 School Password: L30L5123 If you are a new user, CREATE NEW ACCOUNT and click login. If you are an existing user, enter your USER NAME and PASSWORD, and click login.

Parent Portal Now Open Lisbon Central School Parent Portal is now up and running. The portal allows parents/guardians access to their students’ attendance, discipline and grades and is most beneficial to students in grades 5-12. Continued on page 4

Family Counseling: Who it Can Help and How Rachel Skelly, SAP Facilitator

“Jenna” recalls her family’s reluctance to seek counseling. “My husband was worried about the cost, my children feared friends and neighbors would find out, and I felt ashamed. I thought, are we really so bad off that we cannot work things out on our own?”

Your family may be reluctant to obtain professional help for problems at home. Yet doing so can help you identify and change dysfunctional communication and behavior patterns and improve your overall family relationship. Plenty of families you’d consider “normal” or “healthy” seek out counseling at one time or another.

Sometimes, a family has trouble working through an unexpected crisis or stressful event. Or, perhaps constant family squabbling is making home life unpleasant. Often, when a family “troublemaker” acts out, it indicates larger family issues.

Other possible reasons for seeking counseling include:

• when a child or teen is troubled, has behavioral problems or performs poorly in school • when a family member is abusing alcohol and/or other drugs

• when words or actions are physically/emotionally hurtful or abusive • when a physical struggle is used to settle disagreements • during times of family transition (birth of child, divorce, etc.) • when problems are recurring and never adequately solved • when one family member has a mental illness For more information on counseling services available please contact Rachel Skelly, Student Assistance Program Facilitator at 353-6631 on Mondays and Tuesdays, 393-4951 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 713-4861 on Fridays.
