Celebrate Your Joy in Prayer! By Maryann Jimenez It seems that almost as soon as the Christmas decorations and nativity scenes are put away, our lives turn to fish fries, alms giving, and sacrifice. However, it is not during this time that we should also cover up our Joy. As the reality of the Passion of Jesus and the prayers of the Stations of the Cross come about, we are reminded of the unimaginable suffering Jesus endured, the very opposite of Joy. We must remember, however, that during the time of Lent, we are bringing ourselves closer to Jesus and that, in itself, will lead us to pure Joy. As Christians, Joy can come to us through our prayerful connection with God. During prayer we should bring God our exciting news just as we would pick up the phone and call a friend. In sharing our Joys, we are reminded that we always have something to be thankful for in our lives. Furthermore, remembering and thanking God for our Joyous times will allow us to never take things for granted. It is so easy to forget about the blessings in our lives and only come to God with our problems. We must remember that He wants to hear and celebrate our Joyous lives with us, even during the time of Lent, because this will lead us to a greater sense of gratitude and realization that our Joy comes from God. Joy is much greater than happiness. When developing our Joy within we are developing a more prayerful life and relationship with God. The Christian definition of joy is often said to be, “Happiness in God” and must revolve around our relationship with Him. Thus, even in the midst of suffering and the reflective time of Lent, Joy must be ever-present. Lent brings about a deeper life in prayer and strengthens our happiness in God. During the Lenten season please remember to, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God for you in Jesus Christ,” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Welcome to MARCH from Mrs. Nowotny

Dear Parents and Guardians,

March is another busy month at Assumption Catholic School. ITBS testing will begin soon for students in grades 2-8, softball season is upon us and we are in the Season of Lent. Young children often have a hard time understanding Lent. One way of explaining Lent is that it's a time to bring us closer to God. In our busy lives we fill ourselves with candy, buy new toys, play video games and watch television which makes us happy but that happiness is temporary. During Lent we stop filling our lives with temporary happiness and make more room for God. The church encourages prayer, fasting and almsgiving during Lent as ways we can turn our hearts and minds to God. During this time we attempt to incorporate activities in our daily lives which will strengthen us. Many people "give up" something important to them for the 40 days of Lent. To learn how to sacrifice or give up things is a way of learning unselfishness.

There are many things that children can do during lent (pray, fast, volunteer). We are listing just a few that parents have shared with us that might be enjoyable for the whole family:

1. The Jelly Bean Prayer for children is a sweet way of teaching children all about what Lent really means. Using various colors of jelly beans to describe a virtue, children are given a jelly bean for each good deed collecting them up until Easter.

Red for the blood of Christ (a sacrifice)

Green for the shade of the palm (doing a good deed).

Yellow for God's light (kindness to others).

Orange for prayers at twilight (good behavior at bed time prayers).

Purple for days of sorrow (apologizing to someone).

Pink for each new tomorrow (forgiving others).

Begin by rewarding your child(ren) with a jelly bean of the appropriate color each time they do something that corresponds with an act. On Easter, allow them to

receive all the jelly beans they have collected.

 2. Children should be encouraged to pray during Lent. One simple prayer that we are adding to our morning routine this year is called, My Morning Offering.

God, our Father, I offer you today

all I think and do and say.

I offer it with what was done on

earth by Jesus Christ, your son.

 3. Almsgiving is tied closely to fasting. Whatever we "give up", the money we save will go to the needy. It is also considered that almsgiving is to give one's time and goods to those

who are in need such as the Home of the Mother school in Ecuador.

4. Make the Stations of the Cross a family affair. Help your child understand Christ’s journey through pictures (icons) and prayer.

5. Plan an Easter celebration that focuses on Church and family.

God bless,

Mrs. Nowotny

Teacher Profile: Mildred Churchill

4Kindergarten Teacher

s many of you know, I think Assumption Catholic School is the BEST! I guess that is why I love teaching here. My name is Mildred

Churchill, and I have been a Kindergarten Teacher at Assumption for the past 19 years. My husband and I moved to Jacksonville 36 years ago from New Jersey. We will be married for 45 years in January. We have 3 sons, 1 daughter, 2 grandsons, & 2 granddaughters. I was lucky enough to be able to stay home when my children were young, but I have been teaching for almost 30 years. My 2 younger sons attended Assumption from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I even had the opportunity to teach one of my sons here at Assumption when he was in the 6th grade. One of my grandsons is a 5th grader at Assumption, one of my granddaughters is in the 3rd grade at Assumption, and my other granddaughter has started her Assumption career in the nursery. As you can see, we consider Assumption our home. I have enjoyed watching all my students go from Kindergarten to 8th grade here at Assumption. I have been so proud of them. It has also been a joy to have the students at Bishop Kenny come back and tell me how they are doing. I definitely consider it a privilege to teach at Assumption Catholic School.

Assumption Preschool will be a beehive of activity during the month of March.

Teachers will be busy organizing several Lenten and Easter projects. In addition, teachers in PreK-4 will be focusing on letters, S, T, and U. These lucky students, for their cooking project, will be making tacos and upside down ice cream sundaes. Yum-Yum!! On March 9th and 12th the kindergarten teachers will be assessing all PreK4 students.

PreK3 has also planned a number of projects which deal with healthy living. They will be discussing Dental health, and the positive benefits of exercise, eating right, and getting enough sleep.

PreK3 and PreK4 will be visiting the Jacksonville Zoo on Wednesday, March 18th. The students are looking forward to the trip with much anticipation. They are excited about riding on the school bus and observing all the animals from around the world.

Our annual Easter egg hunt will be held the last week in March for all PreK 3 and 4 classes.

Spring Break is from April 2nd to the 10th. Classes resume on April 13th.

Happy Easter!

March News from Your Home & School Association by Ashley Robinson, HSA President

Greetings! HSA would like to extend a BIG thank you to Nicole Lanier and Kate Moody for making our Father/Daughter dance such a success. Over 100 girls and their fathers attended and enjoyed food, dancing, a silent auction and crafts. Also, a BIG thank you to Laddy Monahan and her committee members on a successful Health Week. We were blessed with another beautiful day for the fair and students enjoyed taking an on-campus "field trip" with their classes. We had several new booths including sailing and golf

instruction. The petting zoo and food samples were a hit as always.

We are currently collecting Labels for Education which provides money for our athletics department. HSA will host the Rosary for Life, Freedom and Peace after the 10am mass on Sunday, March 22nd and we need at least 5 families to help say a decade. It's a great opportunity to share your love of Jesus & Mary with your family, especially during Lent. Please contact me if you are interested in helping.

There is an open discussion meeting on Monday, March 23rd at 6:30pm in Kohl's Hall regarding the Common Core curriculum in our school.

Finally, we are going to be selling school supply kits very soon which enables you to buy all of your child's supplies for next year at a discounted price, without having to take a trip to the store! We do need a chair for this project which would ensure your 20 volunteer hours for this year. Stay tuned for more information and contact me if you would like to head it up.

We have fully entered the season of Lent and therefore will have no HSA meeting in March or any major events going on during this time of reflection and repentance. Our April meeting will be on Thursday the 23rd at 8am in Jordan Hall. Look for plenty of volunteer opportunities after Spring Break!
