Dear*Colleagues*and*Patients**It*is*my*great*pleasure*to*invite*you*all*to*be*a*part*of*the*1st)National)Joint)Meeting)
Of)Patients)and)Healthcare9providers) in)Rheumatology,)at)Christian)Medical)College,)Vellore)on)15th)&)16th)(Friday)&)Saturday))December)2017.))
There*are*more*than*100*rheumatic*diseases,*including*inflammatory*conditions*such*as*rheumatoid*arthritis,*ankylosing*spondylitis*etc,*autoVimmune*diseases*such*as*lupus*etc*and*degenerative*conditions*such*as*osteoarthritis.*But*the*number*of*rheumatologists*
who*provide*healthcare*to*these*patients*with*rheumatic*diseases*are*few*in*number*in*our*country.*Often*these*patients*remain*underVdiagnosed*and*underVtreated*and*end*up*seeing*various*specialties*before*they*reach*a*Rheumatologist.*And*time*is*of*essence,*as*
damage*can*lead*to*deformity,*disability*and*loss*of*function.*Patients*are*often*misguided*to*seek*advice*from*quacks*and*healers* in*search*of*cure*and*are*experimented*upon*
with*unknown*preparations*with*significant*toxicities.*Internet*&*Social*media*are*mixed*bags*&*anyone*can*upload*anything*online*to*confuse*a*patient.***
Since*most*rheumatic*diseases*are*chronic*in*nature,*it*is*very*important*that*the*patient*is*an*active*participant* in* the* treatment*process.*Patients*with* rheumatic*diseases,* in*general,* lack* knowledge* regarding* the* causation* and* nature* of* their* disease* and*
medications* used* in* their* treatment,* their* adverse* effects* and* monitoring* for* these*effects.*They*also*do*not*have*a*lucid*understanding*of*adherence*to*medications*and*followVups.**
*With*this*background,*we*have*planned*this*unique*meeting*where*patients,*careVgivers*and*health*care*providers*can*meet*on* the*same*platform*outside*a*stressful*hospital*
environment*and*bridge*the*divide*between*knowledge*and*understanding*of*disease*and*better* life* quality.* We* will* discuss* issues* pertaining* to* causation,* nature,* treatment*options,* diet,* monitoring* and* followVup,* management* of* finances,* rehabilitation* and*
support*groups*related*to*their*disease.*We*will*attempt*to*banish*myths,*misconceptions*and*doubts*through*facts*and*experience.*Together*we*aim*to*empower*our*patients*and*
help* them* achieve* a* better* quality* of* life.* Discussions* and* workshops* on* various*rheumatic*diseases*will*be*steered*by*expert*rheumatologists*from*all*over*the*country.**
We*also* intend*to*set*up*a*“Society* for*Patients*with*Rheumatic*Disorders”*under*our*mentorship*which*will* take* forward*a* ‘patient*pro’*agenda*and*empower* the*patients,*where* they* can* help* themselves* and*many* others.* Such* patient* support* groups* and*
societies*are*very*popular*and*active* in*developed*nations.*They*have*grown*to*wield*such*influence*that*they*have*their*say*in*clinical*trials*testing*new*treatment*options,*formulation*of*national*governmental*policies*and*also*funding*new*research.*One*such*
exemplary*society*is*the*Swedish*Society*of*Rheumatology.*Such*patient*support*groups*and*societies*are*the*need*of*the*hour*and*must*be*encouraged.*This*meeting*is*our*small*
but*sure*attempt*at*improving*patient*knowledge*and*compliance*by*making*them*active*participants*in*their*road*to*recovery*from*rheumatic*disease.*
*Therefore,*I*most*cordially*invite*colleagues*&*patients*to*join*us*in*Vellore*in*making*a*difference*in*the*lives*of*our*patients.**
