Hello again! I can't begin to tell you how well the school year is going thus far! Our staff is energized, our students are working hard, and we now find ourselves fullyimmersed in fall activities and athletics. So far, it's proving to be a very exciting year! One very important upcoming event that I would like to direct your attention to is Parent-Teacher Conferences. They will occur on Wednesday and Thursday, October 19th and 20th, respectively. Conference times are from 4:00 - 8:00 PM each evening. One of the critical things that you can do as a parent to help your child achieve is to establish regular and open communication with his/her teachers. Parent-Teacher

Conferences provide a very effective means of establishing this dialogue. During the conferences, I would encourage you to ask questions about the following: your child's progress toward the learning objectives for each of his/her classes, what you can do at home to assist your child in reaching those objectives, as well as any concerns that your child may have with the class. I would also encourage you to share any other information about your child that would assist us in better understanding their needs. Finally, it is important to remember that our Counseling and Administrative Staffs are also available through the evening to meet. If there is anything at all that we can do for you, please don't hesitate to let us know! Finally, Homecoming Week is right around the corner! Our Student Council has been busy planning activities for the week of September 26th. These days are sure to provide fun and memorable events for our students and staff. I strongly encourage all of you to come out and support the Junior Blues during the week. On Friday, September 30th, the week's activities will culminate with a pep assembly, home football game against Highland Park High School and, of course, the traditional Crowning of the King and Queen. The Homecoming Dance will be Saturday, October 1st. Speaking of the dance, we encourage students and parents to review our dance guidelines which are found on page 41 of the WRHS Student Handbook. The policies are designed to promote a safe, comfortable and appropriate environment for all students who attend our dances. Your support of this policy would be most appreciated! As many of you know, construction continues at WRHS. We are now on the "downhill" side of our projects. The new gym was recently completed and work has begun on the Gym B renovation. When completed on or about December 17th, it will be the new home of our Music Department. For more in depth information related to our various construction projects, please go to http://www.wrhs.net/Construction/. As always, if I can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to call. Ed Raines

Featured Story: 2011-2012 Colorguard

Colorguard: noun Modern colorguard has evolved over the years into a form of entertainment that’s a form of dance theatre. It uses props, along with movement, to express dynamic passages in the music accompanying the show. A colorguard is traditionally the visual representation of the music.

When the WRHS Marching Band takes the football field during halftime, you can’t help but notice the field of flags swaying in the breeze, visually representing the music being played. The coordinated swirls and twirls of the flags that draw spectators into the Atlantis show is no accident. Rather, it is the result of detailed choreography and hours of practice.

Sponsored by Leanna Chaffee, the WRHS Colorguard (“Winterguard” during Basketball season) practices for two hours each Tuesday, and occasional weekly sectionals, from July through the end of Marching Season to ensure their coordinated efforts are safe as well as representative of the music. Each of the 22 students on the 2011-2012 WRHS Colorguard squad “suit up” in costume and full stage makeup before every performance, but only a few made Festival Squad, which travels with the band to three marching festivals and parades. This year, the colorguard will be traveling to Orlando with the band for Orlando Fest.

Next game, listen to the band, but watch the colorguard, and be fully transported to Atlantis!

Banking Tip of the MonthWith school just starting, people’s working hours are cut down to a minimum. It is important to keep extra cash on hand. As long as you are able to manage your studies, a part time job is a great way to earn a little extra cash.

Bank StaffInstructor: Mr. RobinsonStudents: Sydney Ho, Noel Miller, Jenna Burnette, Vivek Jadhav, Griffin Koupal, Miranda Boatwright

Bank NewsThe WRHS Bank is a student operated bank. Students who have taken Accounting 1 through the Business Department, are eligible to apply. Working in the bank provides students with real-life experiences and expo-sure to a work setting. Throughout the year, students who are account holders will have the opportunity to be randomly selected to win an assortment of prizes. Sydney Ho is the newly elected WRHS Bank President for the 2011-2012 school year.

The Daily Transaction

In Mr. McFall’s Marketing Communications class, students explore the features and functions of Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and video editing. Through a hands-on approach, students produce a variety of documents and projects. This course includes activities and discussions related to: advertising, branding, graphic design, packaging, promotion, publicity, sponsorship, public relations, and sales promotion.

Students created movie posters based on what they have been taught using Adobe Photoshop CS5.

STUDENT TEXTBOOK CIRCULATION This fall was the second year for electronic textbook circulation to students. Textbooks, in core subject areas of math, science, English, and social studies, plus foreign language and business, were checked out to students during the first week of school. When classes end, at semester or at the end of the school year, students will be required to turn in the exact textbooks which were checked out to them. Students and parents will be held financially responsible for returning the specific textbooks which were checked out. Students may view the barcode numbers for the textbooks which are checked out to them via the online library card catalog. First, visit the library website at http://library.usd437.net. Then, use the “login” button located in the upper right corner of the website. Students use their computer network username and password to access their library and textbook circulation records.

For questions about textbook and library circulation, speak with the Librarian,

Marcy Sandberg, 339-4197 at WRHS or via email at

[email protected].

Concession StandsPlease support WRHS PTO at our concession stands throughout the school year. Concession stands are the primary fundraiser for WRHS PTO. We provide hot and cold concession items at all home football, soccer, volleyball, and basketball games and at all track and wrestling meets. Concession profits benefits both WRHS PTO and the club, team, or group staffing the event's concession stand. PTO funds support our school in many ways including various enrichment opportunities for our students provided by fulfilling funding requests, student recognition, hospitality, and post prom.

WRHS Post Prom

Preparation for Post Prom 2012 has begun! The committees are forming and we would like your help. Several committees are already putting in their time and effort. We are providing our students a safe place for post prom. This is a huge event and it happens because we all work toward that goal. Great prizes, a fun atmosphere, food, and games equal students that want to attend. It takes all of us working on this project to make it a success. You do not have to be a junior or senior parent to commit. This is a great way for everyone to get involved in the school community.

Please contact Connie McCall at 785-249-9840 to volunteer.

2012 Senior PortraitsIn order to be pictured in the yearbook, 2012 senior portraits are due on:

Friday, December 2, 2011 in Room 216 (Journalism).

We would suggest scheduling your photo shoot with a photographer before schoolstarts, so you will have plenty of time to select and order your photos before the deadline.

We would prefer your image be sent electronically. Please send the file in JPEG format (300 dpi mini-mum) and name it with the student’s first and last name. Cropping dimensions are: W: 1.5” x H: 1.8” – Resolution: 300 dpi. Please send your file to: [email protected].

If you would like to submit your portrait as a print, please follow these guidelines:We will need two copies of the same vertical portrait (wallet size, please), with no texture. We ask for two copies because we send one to Jostens, and we hold onto one in caseJostens loses the first one (believe me, it’s happened).

…just a little advice: • We recommend that you select a senior portrait that is a vertical “head & shoulders” shot for the yearbook.

• Don’t forget that we only accept vertical portraits for the senior color pages.

• Please be sure to select a photo that is school-appropriate and follows the WRHS student dress code policy.

• Finally, many local photographers offer to send your senior portrait to the high school. Please make sure that they do this before the deadline! We have had problems receiving some photos in the past, so please double-check with the photographer to make sure they have sent the correct photo and that it’s on time.

Please note: We will post a list of all the seniors who HAVE turned in portraits after the deadline. This list will be posted outside the Counseling Office and announcements will be made.

SENIORS ARE RESPONSIBLE for checking that list to make sure portraits have been delivered and received by the yearbook staff. We cannot be responsible if your photographer does not mail your photo, so please double-check!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the WRHS Journalism Department at 339-4252.

Don’t forget the December 2nd Deadline!Questions? Call WRHS Journalism 339-4252 or email: [email protected]
