Can you believe it? This September sees our silver Jubilee! It's 25 years since Philip Hawkins and his supporters founded Body Positive Dorset.
. In that time, we have supported hundreds of people affected by HIV in Dorset, raised awareness and fought stigma. We are now the only HIV support centre in Dorset and an authority on HIV related matters. These are things of which we should all be proud. . Since the charity was formed in 1986, the reality of life with HIV has changed dramatically. Treatment has improved beyond recognition giving a much brighter outlook and quality of life to HIV+ people. There is still plenty to do if we want to reduce stigma and discrimination and we look forward to the next 25 years. Who knows... will we see a cure in that time. ................................................... . 25
th Anniversary Party is booked for Thursday 29
th
September at Branksome Arms. Organised by Service Users for SU’s partners, friends, trustees, staff and anyone
...and if Body Positive Dorset means a lot to you, remember to volunteer to help with this very special World AIDS Day in our jubilee year. World AIDS Day is on 1st December and we are looking to mobilise an even bigger band of intrepid fundraisers than last year! So please get in touch to volunteer... Thank you

24 GP Service
Did you know that you can access a GP 24 hours a day? Using the GP out-of-hours service is an easy way to get treatment throughout the year. All GP‟s across Dorset offer an “out-of-hours” service by calling 0845 600 1013 when your doctor‟s surgery is closed. So, it is not necessary to go to the Emergency Department at your local hospital if you need to consult a GP. By calling 0845 600 1013 you can save yourself a lot of time waiting a r o u n d a t t h e Emergency Department and you would be helping to free up time for other patients, some of whom might be facing l i f e - t h r e a t e n i n g situations.
Caroline is
leaving...
It is with sadness that we announce that Caroline will be
leaving us on 25th October to take up a position at St Anne’s.
We would have liked to have been able to keep Caroline at Body
Positive Dorset but we could not compete with the package, including
development and progression opportunities, offered by the NHS.
Caroline says that the decision to leave was a very hard one.
Caroline has worked tirelessly at Body Positive Dorset for over 2 years
and has had a significant impact on the quality of services we offer and
on the lives of several individual service users. We would like to take
this opportunity to thank Caroline for all her hard work on behalf of
Body Positive Dorset. She will be greatly missed by us all but we
expect her back, shaking a tin for us, on World Aids Day ......Or else!
We wish Caroline the very best for the future. X

HIV News Corner...................................................................... Are Scientists Another Step Closer to an Effective HIV Vaccine?
The study showed that almost three-quarters of participants had developed HIV-specific antibodies 11 months after vaccination. Over a third developed one type of T cell that fights HIV, called CD4+, while over two-thirds developed another, called CD8+.
Overall, 92% developed some sort of immune response. However, that is not the same thing as being protected from HIV infection: the response could be inadequate to provide protection. Prof Esteban acknowledged the vaccine was at an early stage, describing it as "promising". The next step is to test it in people with HIV to see if it works as a "therapeutic" - reducing the viral count.
The researcher was optimistic, saying: "MVA-B vaccine has proven to be as powerful as any other vaccine currently being studied, or even more. "If this genetic cocktail passes Phase II and Phase III future clinic trials, and makes it into production, in the future HIV could be compared to herpes virus nowadays."
By that he meant HIV could become a "minor chronic infection" that only resulted in disease when the immune system was otherwise compromised.
HIV could be reduced to a „minor chronic infection‟ akin to herpes, scientists developing a new vaccine have claimed.
Spanish researchers found that 22 of 24 healthy people (92 per cent) developed an immune response to HIV after being given their MVA-B vaccine.
Professor Mariano Esteban, head researcher on the project at the National Biotech Centre in Madrid, said of the jab: "It is like showing a picture of the HIV so that it is able to recognise it if it sees it again in the future."
The injection contains four HIV genes which stimulate T and B lymphocytes, which are types of white blood cells.
Prof Esteban explained: "Our body is full of lymphocytes, each of them programmed to fight against a different pathogen.
"Training is needed when it involves a pathogen, like the HIV one, which cannot be naturally defeated".
B cells produce antibodies which attack viruses before they infect cells, while T cells detect and destroy infected cells. Source: www.telegraph.co.uk

...non-political campaigning organisation whose
mission is to defend the human rights of
individuals. Like Body Positive Dorset, 2011 sees
a landmark year for Amnesty International. 50
years since Peter Benenson started Amnesty
International, there has never been a great need
to defend Human Rights; By way of example, it
may surprise you to know that there are more
slaves alive in 2011 than there have ever been in
the course of human history.
Amnesty International says ‘We are ordinary
people from across the world standing up for
humanity and human rights. Our purpose is to
protect individuals wherever justice, fairness,
freedom and truth are denied.’
This means promoting general awareness of
human rights and also opposing more specific
abuses of human rights.

My Time
I am writing of spare thoughts Which comes to my mind
Friends who I have known for a while They make me laugh and have a joke
I have support of others that care Understand and just being here
In a safe place Like a home
Everyday except on Fridays When the centre closes
And weekends too Open from
13.00hrs - 19.00hrs
Thursdays they have support groups About confidential stuff
Medication All kinds
Sometimes A friend who in the same situation
As myself
Willing to listen About our health concerns
At their most Sometimes at our worst
I like it here Over a chat to others
On a cuppa or having a biscuit Down to the last crumb
Going like dust
My time Is time
my own writing poetry At my best
From the heart

Finding my freedom Finally finding my true self
Of reality And having great friends!

“Dear Delilah...
Congratulations to all those involved in Body Positive
Dorset for a successful 25 years! As we will be
celebrating a special at Body Positive Dorset, I thought
a question about ageing with HIV would be timely!
In short, how does HIV affect the body as we age?
‘Wrinkly’ in Wareham
Delilah says...
Thanks for an extremely relevant question!
Ageing can be a positive process where our life
experiences help us to develop and become more
secure in ourselves. Many older people lead healthy,
active and exciting lives and living with HIV should
not impact on this.
Over time, our bodies gradually lose strength, although
we now know the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and
exercising as we age. This means that older people now
lead healthier, longer lives than before.
As we age our immune systems make less of the
specific T cells needed to respond to new infections
‘Did you spot the deliberate mistake?....email us!! No prizes...it’s just for fun!!!’ 6
and develop immunity after a vaccination. This is why
it can generally be harder for older people to recover
from illnesses and why they may not develop
protection after an immunisation.
HIV causes the immune system to age faster than it
should, meaning that younger people with HIV can
have 'older' immune systems. As a result, the immune
system to become inflamed.
Because of this there has been a rise in the number of
younger HIV positive people having with 'age-related'
diseases and health problems such as cancers, cardio-
vascular disease and osteoporosis. At the same time,
there are now more older people living with HIV
experiencing age-related diseases.
Although no-one can stop the ageing process, we can
make changes to our lifestyles which will help keep
our bodies stronger and healthier into old age. These
inc lude s topp ing smok in g , exe r c i s ing
more and improving our diets, as well as managing
our HIV well.
Living with HIV can be an added complication as we
age, but improving our general health can prepare our
bodies for a happy, healthy older age. Delilah
