Introducing Our Newest Blessing:Concordia of Monroeville

Well Friends – The Ministry Grows Again

On August 15, 2014 Concordia added “The Cedars of Monroeville” - now called Concordia of Monroeville - to our family of services. This facility consists of 59 skilled nursing beds and 87 personal care beds and was built in 1998. Concor-dia purchased the facility for about $10.8 million and intends to invest over $1.5 million to upgrade the prop-erty. We have been extremely pleased with the coopera-tion of the staff and leaders who have worked to make a smooth transition. I was excited to meet some old friends at the facility who have long-term Concordia connections; please see the Charles Koenig story on page 9. Concordia also acquired the Cedars Home Care

company which has been transitioned into the Concordia Visiting Nurses Monroeville office. In a separate transaction, Concordia acquired the former Cedars hospice build-ing in Monroeville. Good Samaritan Hospice is now providing care and services in the Monroeville area. All in all, however, it’s not about the buildings ~ we have a great group of em-ployees at these facilities that will help us provide great care and services to people in need. Praise God.

Since the facility at 1300 Bower Hill Road was built in 2007, 16 members of the Bower Hill Commu-nity Church have made their retire-ment home there … because that’s where their friends are. Here, we briefly introduce you to all of them. Concordia of the South Hills Independent Living Resident Jean Grabow has been featured on billboards and in newspaper ads telling her story. Though she lived across the street from Concordia of the South Hills, making the move an easy one, she credits one of her church member’s invitations as the

reason she chose to live there. Now, she is returning the favor with three friends from church on the wait-ing list. She learned something new about herself too: “I never knew I could paint and do ceramics.” Mary Lou Frock and her late husband, Paul moved to Concordia of the South Hills seven years ago. She enjoys the activities and believes “it is like a cruise without the ship.”

She is an avid volunteer, has served as chairman of the Resident Coun-cil, was named Volunteer of the Year in 2013 and enjoys the family atmosphere. The advice Marian Brannan offers to those in the market for worry-free living is to “look no fur-ther than Concordia.” She admits, “I checked out several area residences and talked with a friend who lives here.” Marian, at 91, said the staff is made up of kind, patient people who she believes “put their faith in caring.” “Concordia of the South Hills is

just the right size to feel like home among friends,” Margaret Zabo tells anyone who might ask about her new home. She and husband Dan moved to Concordia in 2011. Some of the first residents at the loca-tion were from her church, and her church book club met in their apart-ments. She believes they got more than they expected – new friends, easy access to assistance and the opportunity to use their time and talents to make their home the best place possible. “Since I lived in the area, my neighbors and friends can visit me frequently,” says Peggy Harrell, one of the newest residents. She agrees with Betty Ewing that the activities and the staff are among the things she loves most about Concordia. Mary and Chuck Laufer felt that moving to a retirement community of “faith and caring” was a gift to their children. Lee and Bob Ferrero

lived 200 yards from Concordia and his sister, Grace (Ferrero) chose this retirement community a year before. Betsy and Chuck Prine were the second residents to move into Concordia of the South Hills. Prior to his passing last winter, Chuck served in several leadership roles and helped to establish a sense of community. Betsy describes a life where people respect one another’s privacy but at the same time care about and take care of each other. “After Chuck died, anyone whom I encountered … shared a hug or asked how I was doing, and it was genuine,” she noted. Bill and Phyllis Madden attended an Open House with a friend to help him decide if Concordia was the right place for him. Their first impression: “What I wouldn’t do to have the opportunity to live there!” Now Bill tells his friends, “It’s like being on a permanent vacation.”

Phyllis says one need not look any further than Concordia of the South Hills. We note with sorrow the passing of Bill Madden on September 4, 2014.

Some Notes of Interest• The “Bower Hill Gang” has a total of 29 children.• All but one said the one thing they love most about Concordia is the people.• All but one lived in the Mt. Leba-non neighborhood.• All mentioned the activities and the opportunities to volunteer as a benefit.• The word “family” was used to describe the organization in almost every response.

Thousands of people have chosen Con-cordia and other providers for their retire-ment living needs. But for many, there is still some hesitation, and that's understandable. Our goal is to help you – we never want you to make a decision if you’re not ready!

At Concordia, there are a few concerns we hear on a pretty regular basis, so we decided to address them in this video. You can check it out by visiting www.concordialm.org/blog/RetirementCommunityConcerns2014. If you have any questions, or would like more in-formation, feel free to call any of our retire-ment living communities. Concordia at Cabot: 724-352-5378Concordia of the South Hills: 412-278-1300

Following several months of dis-cussion and negotiations, Concordia is pleased to announce our newest blessing. Concordia of Monroeville was added to our family of locations on Aug. 15. The newest member of the Con-cordia system is a simple trip from Greensburg, Murrysville, Irwin and more. We are just outside the heart of Monroeville’s business district, 10 minutes from the Monroeville Mall and one mile from the PA Turnpike (Rt. 76) and Parkway East (Rt. 376). The facility began as a plan cre-ated by three Monroeville business-men: Thurman Brendlinger, Robert Purcell and Murray Lowenthal, in the late 1990s. Concordia of Mon-roeville offers affordable care op-tions including short-term rehab,

personal care and long-term nursing care. Licensed for 59 skilled nurs-ing beds and 87 personal care beds, the facility employs approximately 160 people. In addition, Concordia Visiting Nurses has a satellite loca-tion at the site. The combined services allow those who call Monroeville home the opportunity to age in place. Re-gardless of level of care, the benefits and amenities offered to residents are extensive. Those who come to Concordia of Monroeville for care will have access to a spacious physi-cal therapy gym, free WiFi, open patient living rooms, private dining rooms for personal use, comfort-able accommodations, chef-inspired meals, planned social functions and wellness programs, Bible studies

and chapel services, several activity rooms, a barber/beauty shop, library and lounges. In a separate transaction this past May, Concordia acquired the former Cedars Hospice building, located at the same site. Future plans for the building are still under develop-ment. With several member churches in a 10-mile radius, this acquisition offers Concordia the opportunity to expand our Lutheran Christian witness of love and mercy to serve others. For more information or to schedule a visit to Concordia of Monroeville, please call 412-373-3900 or visit us online at www.concordiamonroeville.org.

“I always wanted to come to Concordia… Instead Concordia came to me,” 90-year old Concor-dia of Monroeville personal care resident Charles Koenig quipped

to president and CEO Keith Frndak. Having been a life-long mem-ber of Christ Lutheran Church in

Forest Hills since its founding in 1931 and a long-time Concordia

donor, he and his wife, Mildred, planned on retiring at Concordia, until she got sick. Last December, after Mildred died, Charles made his home at Cedars of Monroeville, as no Concordia locations were close enough to his home. That changed on Aug. 15, the day Concordia acquired the Cedars of Monroeville building. Charles has a long history with Concordia. He remembers a day in 1952 when he delivered the first TV to the Activity Room in the Oertel Care Center at Concordia. Charles’ mother, Matilda, was a resident at Concordia for many

years, and they made it a point to attend the Oktoberfest and the Festival. Chuck worked for Westing-house for 40 years, developing switch gear equipment. He joined the Naval Air Cadets during World War II. He and his wife enjoyed ex-tensive traveling this side of the Mississippi. Their favorite vacation spot was the Welland Canal near St Catherine’s, Canada where they went three or four times a year to watch the boats. The couple, mar-ried 64 years, has a son, Charles, who lives in the Blairsville area.

Gratitude is our expression of thanks to the Lord for all His blessings. Our donors show their gratitude to God for His abundant blessings through their tribute to those they love. These gifts of gratitude touch so many lives and help us to fulfill our mission to serve God by providing for the needs of His people. Thank you for thinking of Concordia and all those who we serve.

Two Centenarians Celebrate at Concordia at Cabot Concordia at Cabot resident Dorthia Jackson turned 100 on Aug. 15.

Dorthia came to Concordia in February of 1999 from Butler. She was married to the late Joseph Jackson in 1934 in Baltimore. They had three daughters, Evelyn, Dorthia and Cindy and three sons, Joe Jr., Andrew and Alexander. She said taking care of children was her “occupation.” When asked how she thinks she achieved her longevity, she said, “Hard work and loving my

family.” Helen Marie Celko Fieo celebrated her 100th birthday on Sept. 3. Born in Tarentum, she and her husband, Joseph Michael Fieo Sr. lived in Fawn

Township for 50 years before coming to Concordia Ha-ven I on Apr. 1, 2001. They were married on June 12, 1938 in Perth Amboy, NJ and they celebrated their 70th anniversary prior to his passing in 2009. The couple had two daughters, Melody and Crystal Rennie, and one son, Joseph Michael Jr. Helen attributes her longev-ity to having a loving family and a healthy, rewarding lifestyle.

There are 26 centenarians-plus throughout the Concordia system.

Our chef prepared a menu that brought some of that iconic New Orleans food like Creole-Style Pork Osso Buco and Maque Choux here. The Gringo Zydeco Band serenaded the crowd with their unique sound: a blend of Cajun music, blues and rhythm and blues; and Dixieband,

One of my favorite prayers goes like this: Lord God, You have called Your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils un-known. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that Your hand is leading us and Your love support-

ing us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. (Lutheran Service Book, 311). This prayer speaks to the part of me that loves to have a plan. Our culture revolves around having a plan for everything. We make reservations for din-ner and appointments to see the doctor. We send out “save the date” cards before big events. Some mothers even choose to induce labor so that their baby can be born at a time that’s convenient. There are professional people who make a living as event planners, making sure every little detail of an occasion is thought out completely. It’s nice when we can follow a plan. It does make things easier to have an idea of what’s about to happen. But that’s just not the way life works much of the time. There really isn’t anything we can depend on in this life. Accidents happen. Sicknesses come in the middle of the night. Some babies come early, while others stubbornly wait until they are good and ready to be

born. Even the best professional planner can’t antici-pate everything. And it’s not just other people who have these prob-lems. A storm can rain down chaos on your wedding. Your job can be downsized. Your house can fall prey to a fire. Your loved one might die. Your diagnosis may be frightening. So much happens to derail our plans – and it tends to happen without warning. You could say that we all know from experience that life can be really rough on us and on our plans. Now, that’s where the above prayer comes in. It focuses our eyes back on the One who is unmovable, indestructible, and unchangeable. This is our God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – Whose love for us is as unmovable, indestructible, and unchangeable as He is. We are created out of His unfathomable love, redeemed by His compassionate mercy, and strengthened by His abiding presence in our lives through His Word and Sacraments. His promises of forgiveness, life, and salvation are sure. God always welcomes us home to Himself – our only safe Harbor, no matter what storm is tossing our plans around. And so, we and the whole Christian Church join the Psalmist in praying:

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? . . .Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! (Psalm 27:1, 14)
