We know how difficult it can be for families with disabled children to access the support they need when they need it. We also know that with the right services at the right times, disabled children, young people and their families can thrive. As part of the Aiming High Programme, Action for Children provides its own range of activities including sessions taking place at the Action for Children residential unit in Chesterton ST5 7HJ. Our staff also support on activities which are led by other providers.

Watermill School All staff at the Watermill site are qualified to a

minimum of NVQ Level 3 in supporting

Teaching and Learning and are experienced in

working with pupils of a broad spectrum of SEN. On all

activities there will be a First Aid in schools trained

Our focus is dance and disability, but we also provide opportunities and access to art, media, music and drama, striving to target those who would not normally have the opportunity to take part. The purpose of the group is to increase self-esteem, confidence, teamwork skills and inspiration, to raise awareness of what is possible and promote positive responses to both disability and to dance.

The sessions are personalised to meet the needs of the individual children attending on the day. One to one care is available and our staff are a minimum of NVQ3 qualified plus additional relevant training ie Safeguarding, First Aid, Makaton, Behaviour management. Due to extra demand we have now increased our age range to 0 to 10 years for our activities. We also train and recruit volunteers to add additional support to our activities. Staffordshire Wildlife Trust

At Staffordshire Wildlife Trust we pride ourselves on the quality, variety and expertise of our community engagement work. We work with individuals, groups, families and organisations across the county to connect people to conservation and wildlife through taking positive action within their local and wider communities, much of which is carried out via volunteering or specific conservation

projects.

Gifted—DJ and production workshops

The Gifted workshops will give disabled children an opportunity to explore their creative talent via the medium of music and imagery production. Using contemporary mediums has enabled Gifted to successfully engage particularly with children and young people with disabilities, young people not in employment, education or training and Primary Care Trusts. The workshops will ensure that all attendees have an enjoyable experience which will develop their confidence, independence,

personal and social development.

Overnight Short Breaks Service Review

You are cordially invited to participate in a workshop planned for Thursday 17th September 10am start at the Bridge Centre, Birches Head, Stoke-on- Trent. The event will start the review of our residential overnight short break provision in Stoke-on-Trent (Dragons Square, Wood View and Family Link). The review is being carried out to ensure that the residential overnight short breaks provision and support are suitable to meet the current and future needs of disabled children. We value your views and perspectives and we want to review our progress together with you, capture all the learning and review how we plan into the future. Ensuring our overnight residential short break services offer meets the full range of needs. We also need to ensure that our services are flexible and sufficiently personalised to meet individual needs, ensure good value for money and are sustainable in the long term. The event will finish by 1pm. Please confirm your attendance by email to Debbie Gascoigne [email protected]. If you are unable to attend the event there will also be a residential overnight short breaks survey.

We look forward to hearing your views and ideas.

NYAS in Stoke-on-Trent In Stoke-on-Trent we have a dedicated advocacy role just for children and young people up to the age of 25, who have long

term healthcare needs and/or a disability. Some of the reasons a young person may require an advocate could include representation at Child In Need Reviews, Child Protection Conferences or other meetings; help with making a complaint; housing issues; education issues; health issues, so-cial care issues; or generally feeling like they are not being lis-

tened to. To contact the Stoke-on-Trent NYAS advocates for more infor-

FRONTLINEdance runs short breaks every other Wednesday as part of the Aiming High Programme. They are led by Rachael Lines their Artistic

Director. Rachael has been working with children and adults with disabilities for over 20 years and is a dance and disability specialist. She works as a

professional choreographer within integrated dance and has worked with many special school teachers to help them deliver accessible dance classes. She has also been a creative practitioner supporting teachers to deliver a new approach to their teaching - one that is more focused on 'physically

doing' and movement rather than the more traditional teaching methods.

FRONTLINEdance want to share the fact that dance is for everyone. It's for all different types of bodies and want to encourage more wheelchair user's

to dance too!

These short breaks are fully inclusive of all types of disabilities and all levels of dance and learning abilities. They are tailor-made each time to suit the needs of those who participate. They are also supported by another dance

graduate as well as the Action For Children staff.

FRONTLINEdance also run an integrated YOUTH dance company. This means they are for disabled and non-disabled aspiring dancers who share the same enthusiasm for dance and who are aged 11yrs-25yrs. They enjoy and achieve together mainly creating contemporary dance work to perform in a range of settings. They meet every Monday during term time at The Stoke-on-Trent

College, Moorlands Road Burslem (currently 5-6pm, though times may change slightly in the future). They cost £3 a session and payment is made

half-termly.

We also deliver classes for adults too.

We are on Facebook and Twitter so you can keep up to date with FRONTLINEdance on social media. You can also contact us direct by calling:

It is great to see the number of people who have been

contributing towards additional activities in the last three

months.

‘Did you know that the average full cost of each activity per child is £50?’

Thanks to all who have been paying for activities by the

various methods. A number of people have been calling into

the office to pay and it has been lovely to see you and hear

about how your children and young people are getting on.

Thanks to those who have completed the questionnaire we

sent to you, we will report back in the next brochure and on

the website regarding what we have done.

A number of people have said they feel that there aren’t many

activities for children who use wheelchairs. We expect

almost all of our activities to be able to be adapted for

wheelchair users, please call the office to discuss this, or let

us know if you feel any activity is not accessible. I know that

Front line Dance are very keen to encourage wheelchair users

at their activities.

We are really pleased that Children and Families First

Staffordshire has increased the age range for some

activities to age 10.
