Our Vines Have Tender
Grapes
Friday, October 4
12:30 PM 106 min.
Told from the viewpoint
of little Selma, the film
explores grand
childhood adventures:
making friends, a pet calf,
Christmas, a terrifying
trip down a flood-swollen river, a barn fire
and a ride on a circus elephant's trunk.
9 to 5
Friday, October 25
12:30 PM 109 min.
In this witty, satirical
farce, secretaries Dolly
Parton, Jane Fonda and
office manager Lily
Tomlin live every female
worker's dream after
discovering they share
the same resentment towards their
egotistical, sexist boss (Dabney Coleman).
When they get an unexpected chance to
take revenge, they turn their male
controlled workplace into a model office -
even as their scheme spins wildly out of
control.

Don’t forget the “flu clinic” on October 3, from 9:00 AM-Noon at the
Verona Senior Center Health Fair.
The “flu season” is usually from October through May. Remember the vaccine is not effective for the
first 12-14 days after receiving the shot. The flu is caused by influenza viruses and is considered a
highly contagious respiratory infection. Remember to cover your mouth or nose when coughing or
sneezing, and wash your hands often. In public restrooms, remember to use a paper towel
to dry your hands, and then turn off the faucets, and finally open the bathroom door
before throwing away your paper towel.
Normally older adults, young children, and those with specific health conditions are at higher risk for
more serious flu complications including hospitalization and in some cases even death. The greatest
benefits of the vaccine have been observed among people 65 years of age and older. High-dose flu
shots like Hi-Dose Fluzone were specifically designed for people over 65. This vaccine is a
specialized dose with 4 times the antigen (a substance that causes the immune system to produce
antibodies) of a standard flu shot. This makes it more effective. As we grow older our immune
system slows down, so we need that extra boost to avoid the risks that come with the flu season. It
is also a covered benefit under Medicare Part B.
Be safe, be vaccinated.

Case Management
~~Brain Health~~
Our brains change with age and mental decline
is common. Cognitive impairment is not inevi-
table. Here are 7 ways to prevent it right here
at the Verona Senior Center!
1. Get mental stimulation - Reading, edu-
cation classes, word puzzles, drawing, painting,
and other crafts can all be beneficial—all of
which can be found at the senior center.
2. Get physical exercise - Exercise increases
blood flow and nerve growth in the brain. This
results in increased performance in the brain!
See exercise schedule on page 12-13.
3. Improve your diet - Good nutrition can
help your mind as well as your body. Come
have lunch with us! Or Meals on Wheels!
4. Blood Pressure / Blood Sugar / Choles-
terol - Reduce your risk of dementia by
visiting Nurse Barbara on weekly or monthly!
5. Avoid tobacco altogether and limit
alcohol intake - The Senior Center is
alcohol and tobacco free and loads of fun!
6. Protect your head - Consider taking the
Stepping On class to prevent falls and potential
head injuries.
7. Build social networks - Strong social ties
have been associated with a lower risk of de-
mentia. The Senior Center is a great place for
being social.

October 22 Farm Toys
In 1977, one of our own, Bill Rettenmund,
bought a 1901, 1/16 scale horse barn for his

was a collectors’ item. However, his girls
would not permit him! The result? Bill began
constructing miniature buildings of the family
farm in Black Earth, as well as 1901 farm
machinery. He has shown these at toy shows
and will retrieve them from the Black Earth
museum in order to share them with us!
