Cafe on the park re-opensHIBISCUS Cafe has reopened as Cafe on the Park. The cafe by Ocean Grove Park has been taken over by locals Wendy and Paul Cover and Dale and Neil Trezise, retired pathologists from bushfi re affected St Andrews. The team is boosted by the expertise of Martin Graham, a former personal cook for the Sultan of Brunei. Martin who also will prepare all the pies, sausage rolls and cakes on sale at the cafe also runs a business called Outrageous Cakes. Opening times are Monday to Saturday 9am to 3pm and Sundays in summer.

THE Ocean Grove Toy Library is celebrating the launch of its new web site and logo with a party-cum-agm this weekend. On Saturday, July 18 at 10.30am, the Toy Library will host a party to commemorate the launch, thanks to the support, and assistance of Jason Stancombe from Hail Design, Ocean Grove. Having recently received a one-off commonwealth volunteers funding, the group was able to replace toys which were starting to depreciate.The Toy Library is at the Church Hall in Tareeda Way.

ITS a fairly commonplace experience, you open a letter or an email to fi nd that you have forgotten to pay last months phone bill. The red writing spells out the overdue amount to be paid immediately. Stefanie Szlapa had this very experience in June of this year with Telstra adamant that she pays an overdue account for just one cent. Stefanie received her regular bill in May and paid the full amount to Telstra over the phone. In June, the next months bill arrived as usual but with an overdue notice

for one cent. Thinking nothing of it Stefanie paid the usual amount, ignoring the one cent.Incredibly only a week later Stefanie received an email from Telstra demanding she pay the overdue one cent immediately. Stefanie said she could not believe it when she received the bill. I was gobsmacked. I couldnt stop thinking is this for real, said Stefanie. Ive never had an overdue bill in my life, I always pay them on time. I thought it was hysterical.After taking the bill to the post offi ce she was advised to go to the bank for a one cent piece.

Even though one and two cent pieces have been out of circulation since 1990 the bank still had one they could give Stefanie. The bill has now been posted with the one cent piece to Telstra. Stefanie admits that the one cent mistake must boil down to a technical fault, however one cant help being just a tad cynical. OCEAN Grove Primary School has been awarded $3 million under the Federal Governments Building the Education Revolution program.The grant will be used to improve Ocean Grove Primarys library and classrooms in line with the state and federal governments attempt to give all Victorian schools 21st century facilities State Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville said: Education is the Brumby Labor Governments number one priority and that is why we are working with schools in this community and the Federal Government to see our schools transformed and to ensure more Victorians stay in jobs, Ms Neville said. The works are due to commence in weeks.

Ive had my own ridiculous billing experience with Telstra. While having a mobile phone contract with Telstra I used to receive an email alert that my bill was ready to view online as well as receive bills in the mail. When I paid out my contract in May 2008 I believed that I had no more to do with Telstra, however every month since then Ive received an email alert telling me my bill is ready to view, even though I am no longer a customer and the phone number I had no longer exists. When I log into the bill online it says in red letters, outstanding amount, please pay immediately two cents. It then rounds that two cents to zero cents and says politely on the bottom, you have nothing to pay. So why am I constantly receiving these emails? Lets just hope absurd mistakes like these arent black marks on our credit history.

Honours at Grove Brigade dinnerAFTER one of the most eventful years in the CFAs history, Ocean Grove brigade earned the chance to commend its own at its annual dinner recently. Among the speakers was regional manager Paul Stacchino who talked of the effects of Black Saturday - when 1000 fi refi ghters in the region went to war. He said that the events of February had now permanently affected the psyche of Victorians and that was something fi refi ghters would have to deal with but that the State Government now needed to deliver greater support. During the awards night which was MCd by Steve Gibbs at the Dunes Restaurant, the Firefi ghter of the Year honour was presented to Adam Wakeling. Firefi ghter Ivan Lee was awarded with a 60 Years of Service medal while Station Captain Bob Smith was himself awarded a medal for 45 Years of Service.

EVEN though it was a chilly morning some cold-blooded creatures came out to visit the kids involved in Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centres Holiday Program last Wednesday, writes Carly Helweg. Andrew from Roaming Reptiles introduced some of his pets much to the excitement of the kids. Blueberry the Blue Tongue Lizard, Crikey the Saltwater crocodile and Freddo the Green Tree Frog all showed off to their excited audience with Cuddles the Carpet Python slithering out of her bag to cheers and yells.Andrew took the children through each animals traits and habits while teaching them valuable lessons in reptile safety, not only to keep the kids safe but to protect the animals too. Over at Ocean Grove Primary School hall youngsters had plenty to do on the holiday program. They had a chance to have an go at everything from basketball and beadmaking to driving remote control cars.

Ex-HMAS Canberra set to be scuttledI recently had the pleasure of touring the former Royal Australian Navy warship HMAS Canberra which is being prepared to be scuttled off the shores of Ocean Grove in the coming months.

The vessel will become an artifi cial dive site providing the region with a new diving experience for local and visiting divers alike.

Tourism is extremely important to the Bellarine region and we are delighted that the ex- HMAS Canberra will soon be joining its other dive attractions including kelp forests, caves, fi sh life, reefs and shipwreck sites.

The local economy will benefi t from visitors to the dive site who will stay in local accommodation, support dive shops in the region, dine at our restaurants and buy local produce. It is anticipated it will generate approximately $1.3 million each year for the Victorian economy.

Each year there are approximately 150,000 dives undertaken in Victoria which

will increase signifi cantly with the addition of the ex-HMAS Canberra to the underwater landscape.

Decommissioned in late 2005, the ex-HMAS Canberra is a 4,100 tonne, 138 metre long and 30 metre high Adelaide Class guided missile frigate.

The vessel was gifted to Victoria by the Commonwealth Government and the State Government is providing $1.5 million dollars toward the project. New rescue vessel on the Bellarine I was pleased to join members of the Coast Watch Radio and Marine Rescue Squad in Ocean Grove for the launch of their new rescue vessel - a Gemini seven metre rigid infl atable boat with dual Yamaha outboard engines.

Jointly funded by a $100,182 State Government boost under the Boating Safety and Facilities Program and Coast Watch, the vessel will provide a major boost to recreational boating safety in the region.

Search and rescue groups such as Coast Watch play a key role in the overall marine

rescue operations on Victorias waterways and this new rescue vessel on the Bellarine will assist in maintaining a safe environment for all boaters.

The Governments Boating Safety and Facilities Program has invested over $36 million into projects that make boating safer and more accessible to Victorians. It is funded by re-investing a portion of recreational boat operator licensing fees and vessel registration revenue.Primary school fundingRecently funding was announced for Ocean Grove Primary School who will receive $3 million and Wallington Primary School who will receive $2m for new facilities.

This funding for new construction will benefi t both students and staff and is part of the State and Commonwealth Governments commitment to make education a priority.

HI, my name is Tracey Gibbs and I am very happy to be able to say that I am an Ocean Grove local.

Although born in Bendigo, my family (mum Heather, dad Ian, and sister Angela) moved here in 1971 when I was just one year old. Back in the early 70s in Ocean Grove, there was just one kindergarten and one school, so Ocean Grove Preschool and then Ocean Grove Primary School were where I began my education.

By 1976, with our family now entrenched in the community via the kinder, school and tennis club, my parents decided this was a fantastic place to raise their children (and it still is!) and my dad opened the towns very fi rst bike shop, Ian Hendry Cycle & Sports, and we never looked back!

Growing up in Ocean Grove was great. There were lots of dirt roads, you rode your bike everywhere - there was no Surfside, no Woodlands estate, and very little Collendina - and for girls, there was netball, tennis, Brownies/Girl Guides, and dancing, and I had a go at all of these.

At the age of 11 (back when we went to school young!), it was off to high school, and this involved the big bus trip to Queenscliff High School, which has since been demolished and is now a lovely piece of vacant real estate! Right back then in year 7, I had decided that when I grew up, all I wanted to be was a kindergarten teacher (he he!).

I enjoyed my time at QHS, and received the VCE score I needed to get into the School of Early Childhood Studies at Melbourne Uni to complete my Diploma of Teaching. During the 3 years that

I studied, I stayed in Melbourne during the week and came home to Ocean Grove every weekend to play sport and for my part-time job, working as a shop assistant at Geoff Brentnalls Pharmacy.

Finally I graduated and began looking for kindergarten teaching jobs in the Geelong region, as I desperately wanted to move back home to good old Ocean Grove. This was not to be, as there were no local jobs to be had, so it was back to the big smoke and my very fi rst teaching job in Bundoora (a northern suburb of Melbourne). A bit scary as a 20 year old, setting up your fi rst home (or should I say, unit!) away from all your family, and all on a 1st year teachers wage!

In that fi rst year of living in Melbourne, being so far away from home (or so it seemed at the time), I had no choice but to make many new friends, some of whom I still keep in contact with to this day. This was also the year that I met my future husband, Steve, and we were married by the end of the following year! We set up home in Greensborough (a north-eastern suburb of Melbourne) and 2 years on, our fi rst child, Matthew, was born in 1995.

I resigned from teaching to devote myself to motherhood, and we spent many weekends bringing our baby down to the lovely fresh air at Ocean Grove to visit his grandparents. Each time we visited, we would dream about how great it would be to raise our family here. And before the year was out, we had made the decision to move to Ocean Grove, with Steve commuting to Melbourne each day, so we could be near my family and enjoy the lifestyle of this wonderful town. Steve drove

that Melbourne highway for 10 years (before getting his current job in Geelong), a sacrifi ce for which I was truly grateful.

Very excited to be moving back to Ocean Grove, we bought our house (which we are still in today, albeit renovated) in 1996 for $130,000 - what a great time to buy! Towards the end of the year, our daughter Amy was born and our family was complete. Life with two children under 2 was busy, but very enjoyable, as I joined a local fi rst mums group, and some of the friends I met there I still count as my best friends today.

With the kids now aged 4 and 2, I saw a job advertised at Woodlands Preschool in Ocean Grove, starting up a brand new 3 year old program. It was very small hours, and only 4 blocks from home, and I thought this is perfect! Thankfully, I was the successful applicant, and I have been teaching this program (now called Pre-kinder) ever since! I consider myself extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful job that I truly look forward to going to every week.

Now into my eleventh year at Woodlands, I have made more friends through the kindergarten than I could ever imagine. From the magnifi cent staff who I work with, to the dedicated volunteers who run the parent committee, and the families of the children I have taught over the past decade. Woodlands has become my second home, and I love the fact that living and teaching in the same town means that you become such an integral part of the community.

Speaking of community, I guess you could say Im a bit of a

committee-aholic! I love helping people, and I live by the adage that the more you put into something, the more you get out of it!

During my time in Ocean Grove, I have been involved in some way or another with: Barwon Grove 3 year old kinder (president), Ocean Grove Primary School school council (parent liaison, 6 years!), Ocean Grove junior netball (coach), Cobras junior football (social co-ordinator), and St Ignatius College (canteen helper, and Parents & Friends association), and not forgetting the committee meetings that I have attended as a staff member of Woodlands Preschool every month for the past 11 years!

My main passion outside of work is sport. Whether its watching it or playing it, I just love being involved. With the peak of my tennis and netball career probably behind me (!), I prefer now to watch my kids play footy, netball, tennis, cricket, basketball, dancing... just call me their taxi driver! I think were so lucky in Ocean Grove to have so many sports and activities for the kids to choose from, and its such a great way to keep fi t and meet new people (for the kids AND their parents!) And how great is it now that The Voice is so big the sports photos are magnifi cent!

When I think about life in Ocean Grove, I think how lucky we are to live in this beautiful seaside town. Yes, we have to share it with the fl ood of tourists at Christmas time, but who can blame them for wanting to spend their holidays living the idyllic lifestyle that we have all year round?

I cant think of any other place Id rather live than Ocean Grove!

is a large bird, with a white body and a black head and neck.

The head doesnt have any feathers on it, so it must have a cold head during winter! It has a large curved black bill. Adult birds have a collection of cream feathers on the back of the neck.

The female Ibis is slightly smaller than the male and have shorter bills. White Ibis fl ocks fl y in a distinctive V fl ight pattern.

The White Ibis is found in most regions of Australia, except for the desert areas. They are found in swamps and grasslands, and have successfully adapted to living in urban areas.

They feed on a range of food that includes

crayfi sh and mussels (they have very good taste!) as they can dissect creaures with their long bill (gruesome). However they also feed on scraps from rubbish bins so they rival the sea gull in cleaning up after humans. Ive often observed a White Ibis living on the rubbish bin at Bellarine Secondary College.

My friend Beth and I were on an 11am ferry to Sorrento on Thursday when we were fortunate enough to see three southern right whales! It was so exciting, something that can not be captured in photos. Some things are just moments, and although pictures can be fantastic reminders, they can not always capture the emotion that goes with seeing something as these beautiful unique massive creatures of the sea!The ferry seemed to stop just offshore of the Sorrento pier. When we looked up we noticed that the three drivers of the ferry were all peering out to sea with either cameras, phones or binoculars. Everyone seemed to feel a sense of awe as we were privileged and fortunate enough to watch the whales.A dolphin frolicked playfully beside one of the whales and some people thought it was a young whale. Then we noticed a second whale, they seemed to be playing together, rising

up and sinking down repetitively through the sea. There was an amazing moment when we fi nally realised there seemed to be three whales and they all turned away at the same time as if they were completing a syncronised swimming routine! They turned away and swam off together, but they hadnt left at all. We all wondered to the side of the ferry (lucky it didnt tip!) and then the last of us battlers that could cope with the cold blustery wind walked to the back of the ship for one last glimpse before we headed back to reality.Beth and I were discussing boring complaints before we saw the whales - after the beauty of this piece of nature - nothing else mattered for the day! Everything was in perspective. If only we could hold onto that feeling...

A week ago while out walking at Port Lonsdale, We came across a beautiful seal sunbaking on the rocks. As the tide started to come in he decided to go for a dip. THE ex-HMAS Can-berra warship will become a major new temperate water artifi cial reef and dive site within the month.

The fi rm charged with readying the ship for scuttling off Collendina, the Birdon Group, has recently completed work on the 30-year-old FFG-7 class frigate.

The project which has been backed by the State Government to the tune of $1.5m has the support of the Victorian Artifi cial Reef Society, a non-profi t, dive community group made up of recreational and commercial divers.

President of VARS is John Lawler who said there is growing excitement among the dive community about the imminent scuttling.

The ex-HMAS Canberra will be the centerpiece which will make Victoria a world class temperate water dive destination, said Mr Lawler.

Its not a standalone site, there are a lot of other scuttled vessels in close proximity.

They include 4 j-class submarines.

Mr Lawler said that careful planning had gone into scuttling the ship to prevent any harm to the environment and to maximise the potential of the wreck as a dive site.

He said for the ex HMAS Canberra Reef had to have suitable geological characteristics, be devoid of sensitive marine habitats and have minimal impact on the local coastline; does not

impact on shipping lanes or navigational areas; should be of a suitable distance from required commercial infrastructure to maximise commercial operation and diver attractiveness; should be able to attract fi sh and increase local biodiversity; should be at an appropriate depth of water suitable for the experience level of the target market of divers; should not be dangerous for scuba diving and have good visibility; should not impact on other legitimate uses that may operate in the area; and should have suitable currents.

It is expected that the HMAS Canberra will be scuttled on 15 August 2009, subject to weather conditions, said Mr Lawler.

The contractor, Birdon, has done a marvelous job in preparing the vessel better than any other that has been scuttled.

It will be a very exciting dive. Fortunately the contractors took the advice of the dive industry in preparing the ship and leaving as much as possible.

This will be a huge bonus to the area. It is estimated that $1.5m to $3m will be poured into the region as a result of the exercise

Mr Lawler said that on the day of the scuttle viewers will be able to watch from vantage points from Point Lonsdsale to Barwon Heads. Ocean Grove Lookout and Collendina will probably offer the best local vantage points.

Mr Lawler said the sinking will take place 4-5km from the beach and there will be no chance of any of it ever being exposed by low tide.

The vessel is subject to stringent environmental controls that have been put in place by the Federal Government.

They have been met. It in no way impairs the marine environment. A lot of time, money and effort have been put into this.

He said the site would be on the old sand Barwon River bed.

It wont be on a reef. It will sink into that sand, probably 2-3 metres and that will provide stability.

Added to that, in the hull of the vessel was 90 tonne of lead ingots. This has been removed and the equivalent amount of cement has been poured in that will add to its stability.

He said that the majority of open water divers will be able to dive to the top deck which will be in 18m of water.

Mr Lawler said he was unsure how long after the scuttling that divers will be able to take an offi cial dive.

When it is scuttled, the site will be looked after by Parks Victoria.

They will be placing four moorings, two to the port side and two the starboard using 10 tonne blocks, so that the charter operators will be able to tie off.

(When diving can start) will depend on how soon these moorings can be

placed. There is going to be a lot of ifs and buts. It is really an unknown when diving can begin offi cially. Also the charges have to be cleared by the contractor responsible for scuttling her.

Mr Lawler said that although he was certain of the method that will be used in this case, previous scuttling of ships has been carried out using a system where charges simultaneously cut the hull below the water line.

He said that the method is more akin to laser cutting than explosives.

The process cuts about 17-18 holes, each about the size of shipping pallets, in the side of the hull. The sinking then takes about 4 minutes.

The ship will be pulled to the site by two tugs.

The scuttling is scheduled for August 15 although this could be affected by weather and sea conditions. Views? [email protected]

Grove Rotary grows furtherTHE Rotary Club of Ocean Grove marked its 25th year with steady growth, members heard at its annual changeover dinner.

Outgoing president John Calnin announced that the club had inducted nine new members as he outlined a series of achievements.

They include providing clean water to a school in Zambia, sponsoring and assisting those affected by the bush fi res, organising and hosting a holiday for those affected by drought in other parts of Victoria, building on local partnerships with the CFA, a Mental Health Forum, Victorian Ambulance, the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre and Ocean Grove Surf

Lifesaving Club. Further ongoing efforts went into the Rotary Market,

the ANZAC Day Dawn Service breakfast, the cause to eradicate Polio, numerous other health related projects, the Shelter Box program and their own Pride in Workmanship Awards.

During the evening Rod Greer was inducted as the new club president, while the club honoured Geoff Ford as a Paul Harris Fellow. This week Rotarys Bulletin editor John Fox announced he would be stepping down after 51 years of service in Rotary alone. John has given extraordinary service to the community.

Musos lap up Wilsons workshopJUST to top off Ocean Groves hugely successful Open Mic Festival in June a professional workshop was organised for a selection of the events performers.

Each cafe nominated one performer to attend a performance skills workshop with nationally renowned musician Chris Wilson, as a form of encouragement award.

Chris gave an informal talk about confi dence, tempo, volume, working with sound engineers, and checking equipment and ensuring an adequate supply of spare strings and batteries.

He also discussed less often considered but vitally important health and safety issues, such as hearing protection.

The local bluesman a legendary harmonica player - who packs in crowds to hear his gigs all over Australia said that stage etiquette should

also be considered, adding one fi rm rule Play your music and then get off fast.

Chris suggested that playing locally was usually the best way to start and he praised the recent Open Mic Festival and the rise of live music venues in the town as being more akin to the time when he began playing in Melbourne.

In those days you could work every night, he said.

The exclusive workshop was held at the Zebra Bar.

Regional Arts Victoria funded a Quick Response Grant to OGAN to help run the Open Mic Music Festival.

Other sponsors included the Australian Government Regional Arts Fund and the Ocean Grove Voice which donated free advertising space for the event.

AT least one Ocean Grove musician hopes to make an extra difference to the lives of others with her forthcoming performance at Bar Deli. Already an accomplished and well recorded artist, Bree-arne Chamley will headline a multiple sclerosis open mic and jam session at the venue on Friday July 31. Bree describes her music as folk, getting into blues, recently played with a reggae band but either way shes self taught and self-penned. Shes also writing a book about her battle with MS. The event will also include an awareness aspect, with Bree keen to elaborate on her experience. According to local fi gures, about 14 women of Brees age have been diagnosed in the Barwon region. The organizers of the July 31 gig are also hoping primary schools will take part between 4pm-6pm with an open mic/jam following from 6pm. The aim is to link the fundraiser with primary school pupils who are already involved in the annual MS read-a-thon. The money raised is entirely going to an organization funding MS research. KENYAN singer Maia Von Kekow (above right) is set to play Ocean Groves Bar Deli venue this Friday.

Maia represents another colour to the dynamic East African music scene, her voice and style has an affi nity with female jazz vocalists of the 1930s and the folk music of the 1960s all shaped by her Kenyan roots.

Maia, who wrote and recorded tracks in Melbourne before relocating to Berlin, previously worked on the live circuit in Kenyas Nairobi, Tanzania and Addis Abbaba, Ethiopia.

She has also been involved in concerts and campaigns that raise awareness in Africa of rape, gender based violence and AIDS/HIV.

Maias recent release Uko Wapi was featured in the much acclaimed Kenyan production, From a Whisper, depicting events of the 1998 bombing in Kenya and was awarded the Best Soundtrack at the 2009 African Movie Academy Awards in Nigeria.

Maia Von Kekow will perform at Bar Deli in the Terrace on Friday July 17 from 6pm to 8pm.

OCEAN Grove bookseller Stacey Moore was at the centre of the recent Tim Winton visit to Geelong. Staceys store Book Grove was asked to look after book sales for the event.During the event at GPAC Winton read from his novel, Breath. Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award 2009, winner of the inaugural Indie Book Award 2008 and the 2008 Age Book of the Year for Fiction, Breath is Wintons twentieth book and eighth novel.Stacy said It was a great night at GPAC, he (Tim) personally signed at least 200 books, read from the novel and answered and elaborated on about 10 questions.

OCEAN Grove is on its way towards a greener future thanks to local residents and businesses recycling their used ink cartridges through Australia Post.Ocean Groves Post Offi ce is one of the top 10 recyclers in Victoria after collecting 121 used printer, fax and copier cartridges in May for Cartridges 4 Planet Ark.

Groves Postal Manager Liz Rayner says they try to promote the scheme by informing customers when purchasing ink cartridges that they can be returned and recycled.

We like to be environmentally conscientious, said Liz.

Planet Ark started the program in 2003 to try and reduce the number of cartridges going into landfi ll, around 18 million every year.

Materials used in the cartridges dont break down and can release chemicals potentially harmful to the environment.

Cobras winA GROUP of Cobras junior footballers will get a top fl ight training session with Fremantle Dockers forward Matthew Pavlich in the next couple of months thanks to the support of local parents. Cobras have earned a visit from one of AFLs premier centre half forwards after the Collendina Sports Club won an Australian-wide competition organised by Home Hardware.

The club earned training points as a result of parents shopping at Ocean Grove Home Hardware. The South Australian born Pavlich wears guernsey number 29 and made his AFL debut in 2000. Cobras will be allowed to nominate 25 players to take part in the training session.

Dancing highOCEAN Grove Callisthenic College was fortunate to have two of their pupils selected for the 2009 Victorian State Team. Maddy Hibble is a member of the Intermediate Team and Skye Allen a member of the Junior Team. Both girls have travelled to Melbourne every Sunday since November last year to train at Jason Colemans Ministry of Dance. Finally, after eight months of intensive training they went to the National Titles on the Gold Coast where their team was due to perform six items, including March, Club Swinging, Free Exercise, Rods, Aesthetics and Spectacular. During their preparations the girls have continued to train in their respective sections at Ocean Grove as the Victorian Competition Season commences again in August. IN mens division 1 soccer, Surfside Waves are now positioned in third place in the league, but putting pressure on the league leaders.

Last weekend the Waves played at home to fourth placed Corio Bay and despite going one nil down early on in the game they staged a good fi ght back to eventually win 3-1.

Fonda Tzaninis levelled the scoring just before half time with a close range effort and then in the second half Sid Smith put the Waves in front with a long range drive that stung the goalkeepers

hands before edging over the line.Five minutes from time the

points were made safe when Staffan Hargreaves showed great strength in holding off two burly defenders before slotting past the hapless keeper.

In their latest match the Waves played at home to league leaders Breakwater, in a feisty encounter, in diffi cult muddy conditions. The fi rst half ended goalless despite the Waves having the better of the chances but then in the second half the game exploded into life with the introduction of Waves new star signing Jack

Mandly and pacey Willi Wasp.And with twenty minutes to go

Jack announced his arrival with a clinical fi nish to put the Waves ahead causing mass celebration by his elated team mates who piled on top of their new hero.

Then fi ve minutes later Tom King stunned the Breakwater keeper with a long range effort that found its way into the back of the net to give the Waves a deserved 2-0 win.

Irish coach Stan praised his players at the fi nal whistle and pointed out how successful his tactical substitutions had been!

It was a much improved effort by the seconds and was certainly a confi dence builder going into last weekends match against Barwon, who defeated them 7-nil in their fi rst encounter.

However it was Barwon who got the better of the Waves defence structure in atrocious fi eld conditions defeating Waves 3-2.

Division Three are well on their way to a semi-fi nals place with two strong victories in the past fortnight.

First to suffer the power of the Waves attack

was Deakin who were smashed off the park 7-1.

Last weekend Surfside met old foes Barwon Heads Red and what was expected to be a tough encounter.

However the Waves demolished their Barwon Heads rivals 6-2 to sit in fourth place with their eyes fi rmly on a fi nals place come September.PLEASE NOTE: Other reports and scores not available at time of going to press

THE season is more than half over and the club is looking to the fi nals. Some have some work to do and others are looking quire comfortable. Most of the junior teams are looking good with the B grade side being our best chance in the seniors at this stage. A grade: This team is a capable side that has pressured top teams. At times they are inconsistent but are capable of performing at a high level. Lizzie Wilkens has combined with Miranda Coma and Paula Birch in defence. Whilst Charlotte Vines was solid in Wing Attack until a knee injury cut her season short. Steph Wilkens and Lucy Teague-Neeld combined well in goals. Unfortunately Lucy could not remain all season as a GAP year in Africa took her commitment. The big improver this year has defi nitely been Sharni Godfrey who has maintained solid defence and clear choices. This team are 5th at present and each win is required to contest fi nals. B grade: This team is building connections and combinations this season. It is a young side with fl exible players such as Emily Holahan, Laura Dreher and Tina Birch being able to play at both ends. This team is placed in fi nal contention. Defenders are learning different tactics and when to apply them. With Molly Teague-Neeld and Sarah Degenero taking spacial defence. Abby Benjamin is

using her speed, whilst Leah Cole is becoming consistent. Rochell Godfrey has grown in confi dence and is making great solid choices. Brooke Davis has created sound connections between defence and attack. This team learns each week. C grade: These girls work hard each week and we can the some

improvement both in their skills as well as team work. Rachel Mayor is making the players play in the goal third and feeding the goalers well. Lizzy Ryan works hard in defence and her speed is proving to be an asset. Emily Burchell has played the last few games up in C grade and her height is welcomed on the court.

D grade: The D grade girls are a fantastic bunch of girls who have lots of fun on court and training. Although we have not won as many games as we would have liked the girls always perform as a team and have shown great improvement throughout the season. Agression for the ball and strong leads have been

our greatest improvements.Friday Night teams at Kardinia Park. Ocean Grove is represented by three teams, Under 13s,15s, and a 17s. All three teams are in the top four on the ladder. The team play against some of the GFL teams and these provide a very tough competition in each age division. A big thank you to coaches and the fantastic parent support. 19/U: This team has been mixed around lately with quite a few of the girls not available due to the school holidays. They are performing well and look like they will play a big part in the fi nals in this section. Jenna Green continues to be very consistent through the centre. Brooke Davis showed some of her other skills when asked to goal on Saturday, well done girls and keep up the good work. 17/U: This is another team that has been affected by the absence of some of their regular players. This team is in the top four and should be able to stay there. Georgia Ellis has been very consistent in goals while Bree Fankhauser and Megan Hand are strong through the centre. 15/U: The girls are in the four and going along nicely. They have a few games that will really test them but should fi nish in the four. Laura Ellis and Shelby Hackett are very strong players and give the team lots of confi dence and drive.

15/U: second division: This team is in second place on the ladder and continues to play strong netball. Alyse OKeefe is quick through the centre and gives the team lots of drive. Eden Bolton had improved this season.13/U: This group of young guns are improving every game. They are taking on all that is given too them 100%. They have a big game against Barwon Heads where they will be fi ghting for top spot. This should be a fantastic game and big challenge. Good Luck girls
