BELLARINE Business Network is staging a business breakfast at the Dunes next week. The guest speaker will be leadership guru Frank Kelloway of Academy Global.

Kelloway is a Senior Consultant with Academy Global. Frank is an experienced leader with a strong background in military and management consulting. A graduate of the Royal Military Col-lege and the University of New

South Wales, Frank has extensive hands on ex-perience in leadership and human resources de-velopment roles. He has held military command

roles in East Timor and held international assign-ments with the United Nations.

Frank is also a Director of the Queenscliff Community Enterprise (a Bendigo Bank Ini-tiative) and an ex director of the Portarlington Community Bank. He has been a key success to some great initiatives in the Queenscliff com-munity.

Business Breaky at Dunes

OCEAN Grove arts meets Ocean Grove community association – and everyone else who wants to attend – at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop tonight (Wednesday March 11). Entitled OGAN Presents a Case for the Arts, this Ocean Grove Commu-nity Forum is an open invitation to the community to come and fi nd out about the Grove’s new not-for-profi t incorporated arts network. The forum will discover that the network’s aims are to: 1. Encour-age participation and creativity in all forms of the arts within the local community; 2. Provide opportunities for artists to showcase their work locally; and 3. Current local events include the Ocean Grove Festival and the Ocean Grove Carols in the Park This free event starts at 7.30pm at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop, 6/63 The Terrace, and will feature some of the town’s musical talent.

Art for community’s sake

Ocean Grove Bowling Club fundraisers were out in The Terrace at the weekend raising cash for Geelong Hospital. The annual fundraiser included craftwork, a sausage sizzle and music.

RESIDENTS in Ocean Grove are calling for faster action and more resources to be put into managing the Nature Reserve’s fire risk.

Problems highlighted during the recent Vic-torian bushfires have re-ignited the debate and renewed calls for action.

According to the town’s Community Associa-tion, it approached various authorities about the Nature Reserve back in 2007 and was assured that everything was in hand and that cool burn-ing would take place.

Community Association member Jo Haw-thorne said that with the recent bushfires “quite a few people around town were concerned and talking about the Nature Reserve again”.

The issue will be discussed at a meeting tonight (Wednesday) at Ocean Grove Fire Station from 7.30pm.

Among the concerned residents is Bob Potter. Mr Potter contacted the Voice after he says he was passed between agencies and failed to get an answer. He believes the issue needs to be tackled immediately.

“If there is a fire danger then surely that takes precedence over protocols. If something hap-pened next week we are in trouble.

“It there was a fire there tomorrow it’s not be-ing solved by a three-year plan.”

Parks Victoria Ranger Stuart Willsher told the Voice that he would be putting a submission to the Department of Sustainability and Environ-ment to make a prescribed burn off program a

priority in the next 3-year Fire Operations Plan. While Mr Willsher agreed that the Reserve

posed a risk, he said that a lot of work had already been done to reduce fuel loads on the forest floor and more would be done to ensure future burn offs, carried out by the DSE would be more suc-cessful.

One of the problems with previous burns is they have simply cleaned up small debris and have not touched larger materials off the ground.

Last year Parks Victoria employed teams of Conservation Volunteers and Drought Relief workers to physically remove fallen branches which were burned in the paddock between the Reserve and the reservoir. They have also been dropping elevated deadwood to ensure it burns during the next prescribed burn.

Mr Willsher said that the approach is to balance ecological and fire protection measures that pro-tect the rare stretch of native bushland.

While progress had been made in enlarging the southern fire break (adjoining the Woodlands Estate), he is also working to return the dense woodland to how it used to be.

Originally the eastern half of the reserve would have been more open with views of at least 200 metres.

By thinning it out, mulching and using other mechanical means, the reserve is already showing signs of a re-emergence of species.

The event attracted exhibitors and buyers from as far as Warrnambool and Shep-parton, with interest in a huge range of stamps and postcards. Calm shop was ahead of its timeOCEAN Grove’s Tranquillity Base has been celebrating its 18th birth-day – also announcing it is expand-ing out to the edge of the town. The alternative Parade store which was Grove Pottery until 1991, was started up by Judith Marie Harris and has been run by her and her daughter Jacqueline ever since. A celebratory get together was held at the shop during the day and a special cake cutting and musical performance was arranged at the additional new premises next to Amazing Games on Grubb Road. Judith said the new premises would offer the chance to put on drum circles and yoga type activities as well as stocking many of the goods found at the original store.

THE Seachange Quilters kick off Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea this week – setting the scene for the week-long events that culminate in the Big Day on Sunday March 22. Event organisers are anticipating 4,000 visitors to the festival which celebrates the Grove and Bar-won Heads’ shared coastline, estuary and arts.The festival promises music, art displays, food stalls, an environment and sustainability expo, a craft and produce market and heaps of activities for the kids. As usual one of the highlights of the festival is

the famous Duck Race on the Barwon River. Ducks cost $10 each and stand a chance of win-ning a $3,000 travel voucher. The Seachange Quilters Quilt Exhibition will be held at the Uniting Church Hall, 71 Hitch-cock Avenue, Barwon Heads from Friday March 13 to Sunday March 15. COMMUNITY man Ron Johnson cuts the cake at his 80th birthday party on Sunday. Ron, vice president of Ocean Grove RSL and well know community ‘helper’, is surrounded by his wife Jean and family and friends, at the lunch party held at the Senior Citizens Hall. Richard Grimmett of Bellarine Memories also put together an audio visual show of photo-graphs of the younger Ron in the British Navy and the Australian Army and guests heard messages from those who couldn’t attend.

Harriers 25th pub to pub

AS MC extraordinaire or some would say extor-tionary MC, Phil Emery, would say - the annual Pub to Pub is unique.

The only organised running event that follows an easterly direction at low tide, crossing a bridge, between two pubs and after 6pm on a Wednesday night.

That just about sums up this happy band of sprinters, runners, joggers and limpers that goes by the name of the Hangover Harriers.

It’s a free running group that trots from the Dunes to 13th Beach and back every Saturday morning at 7am - before tucking into latte and fruit toast.

This special 25th anniversary run between Bar-won Heads Pub and the Ocean Grove Hotel was won by the Voice’s Alan Barber on his first pub to pub. Actually, that’s a lie, but he was there and com-pleted the low tide canter to Collendina.

The Ocean Grove Hotel, as usual, looked after the runners on their return.

False dawn for siteALERT Voice readers made sure we knew about the appearance of a worker at the dor-mant Target site last week. On hearing the news we trekked down to the see what was gong on. There we found a man inside the fenced off compound collecting up sections of timber. Asked if he was from DZINE, the building fi rm that is fi ghting to take over the site from the previous developers, he replied “yes”. Asked if this was the start of work and whether others would soon be joining him on the site and he declined to comment and continued tidying the site. Based on that evidence it’s probably not time to stop the ‘no action’ clock just yet.

A 12-HOUR music marathon has raised $22,500 for the bushfire relief fund. The Fight Fire with Rock music festival featured Grove and Barwon Heads bands and individual musicians and DJs peforming at the Barwon Heads Pub.

Rotary forum attracts more than 300MORE than 300 people attended a Rotary and Barwon Health organ-ised forum on mental health recently.The event was held at the Wave in Ocean Grove. The audience heard from 13 speakers, , in-cluding opera singer and cobbler Peter Brockle-hurst, a number of health practioners and people with first hand experi-ence.

OCEAN Grove may have lost its day-time CWA but the night group is still going strong – and now in its 13th year.

The photo opposite shows the pres-entation of donation to Rob Baker, Ru-ral Information and Support Worker at Centacare Family Services, Geelong, during their March meeting. Rob gave a talk to the group about his work in the Region.

Some of the CWA’s other commu-nity projects include organising, along

with our sponsors, holidays in Ocean Grove for farming families, supporting secondary students who have needed extra support, hampers for families and individuals who have needed a “lit-tle extra something”, and donations to State CWA Drought Funds and pamper packs.

a day in the life - geoff elgin

“Doesn’t get much better than this”

I HAVE lived in Ocean Grove since 1978 after purchasing Paxton Press Printer in 1977. In those days we operated in the main street at the “Arcade”, where the Coles Bottle Shop is now. We moved into our present building in Smithton Grove, Christmas 1984, where I have oper-ated since.

Since taking on Paxton Press as the sole proprietor, I have had my daughter, Shelley, work alongside me as the Graphic Designer. For the past 18 months, she has been work-ing for a company in Darwin and has learnt new and exciting techniques thereby bringing a new concept to Paxton Press.

We have also expanded the busi-ness over the past few years, intro-ducing

Digital Printing and a more quick and effi cient service. I am very excit-ed about what the future ahead holds and what new concepts we can bring to our customers.

Born and Educated in Burnley, Lancashire ENGLAND, I left those sunny shores and headed for Cana-da, where I lived for 18 months.

Over there I met my wife, Fay who is Australian and after a whirlwind romance, married and migrated to Australia in 1975 and had two kids; Luke and Shelley.

My fi rst memories of Ocean Grove

was when my wife, Fay and I met up with one of her friends and had fi sh and chips and a walk on the beach. I thought...“it doesn’t get much better than this” ... with the great views and warm weather.

Over the years I have been in-volved with Apex Club of Ocean Grove where we met - and still do have - lifelong friends through the organisation.

Following that, Cub Scouts af-ter my son joining, needed leaders, which lasted nine years. I then be-came a member of the Ocean Grove Baptist Church, which is still going.

With work and family commit-ments, I have no outside passions away from work, although in the near future I would like to travel around Australia, take up golf again and have a bit more time for doing nothing.

I wouldn’t want to change any-thing about Ocean Grove, I love it as it is. The best things about it are the lack of traffi c, the convenience of everything being so close, the beaches, little pollution and a happy friendly community.

If I wasn’t situated in Ocean Grove, I would be traveling all around Aus-tralia. It has been one of my desires to go to the outback and see the many wonders you don’t get to see in Victoria.

Thanks for the poolThe Bellarine Aquatic Centre has now been opened for 3 months and many people (resi-dents and visitors) have had the opportunity to use this facility.The response from people is that it is a magnifi-cent community asset that has many attributes which will be well used by all on the Bellarine Peninsula for many years.The OGCA would like to thank all those involved in the successful implimentation of the project and specifically Cr Jan Farrell, Cr John

Mitchell and Lisa Neville, together with the council recreational staff.Also at our November 2008 Community Forum at which Cr Jan Farrell was the guest speaker, the issue of installing a safety barrier for the new skate park was raised. Cr Farrell acted on this issue quickly resulting in a very aesthetically pleasing timber safety barrier being installed within 4 weeks.This is much appreciated and now provides a safer environment for the Skate Park users.

Strawberry fairA STRONG entertainment line up and plenty of activities and mouthwatering treats ensured the 25th annual Strawberry Fair was a huge success. Local musicians Howlin’ Wind Band, the Rustys and Sambrose Automobile topped the bill while strawberry sales, Devonshire teas, jams and fairly floss proved a big hit with visitors.


Free Counselling ServiceA free counselling service is operating at OGNC on Monday and Tuesday. The service is provided by Centacare Catholic Family Services through CRISP (Centacare Rural Information and Support Program). CRISP is active in providing a confi dential counselling service free of charge in rural postcodes in the Geelong area. The CRISP counselling team is responsive to the needs of individuals, couples, families, adolescents, children and groups. It reaches out over the Geelong region to provide respectful counsel-ling, workshops and information session. The strategy helps encourage emotional well-being and hope in times of stress in our community which is facing dryness, climate change, fi nancial and other pressures impact-ing on family and personal relationships and mental health.If you would like to talk things over with a coun-sellor, you can begin by telephoning Centacare Geelong on 5221 7055 to arrange a local appointment.

BUSH FIRE RELEIFOur co-ordinator Nicki is heading up to Kin-glake once a fortnight to help with the bush fi re relief through the local neighbourhood centres. Thanks to all OGNC participants who donated goods.

DROP IN – YOUTH PROGRAM.Young people enjoyed a night at Ocean Grove Police station, BBQ, a tour and information about police high challenge camp. Its great to see the barriers broken down between local youths and police.

VACATION CARE EASTER SHPOGNC operates a School holiday program for primary aged children every break. Our centre is accredited with the national registra-tion body as a high quality centre. Families receive Child care benefi t – contact the centre for a copy of our upcoming program. Don’t miss out as places are limited. Bookings now open.

MOOD SUPPORT GROUPA self help group meets weekly and is avail-able to people with mental health problems. We aim to assist and inform those with mood disorders, through discussion groups, guest speakers, art therapy, meditation, etc. A mem-ber recently stated “It means so much having a place to go where I can feel comfortable in the knowledge that other really knew how I feel.” We are open to everybody and all are welcome. Thursdays 10am to 12noon.

A MOTH is an insect that is closely related to the butterfly. Most species of moths are nocturnal (active during the night) or crepuscular (active at dawn or at dusk).

The study of butterflies and moths is known as lepidoptery.

The differences between butterflies and moths are as follows:-Butterflies have thin, slender antennae, where as moths have feathery antennae-The wings are different shapes, and moths have a an extra lobe on the forewing-The moth caterpillars spin a cocoon made of silk in which they change into a moth (called meta-morphosis), where as butterflies form an exposed

pupa (known as chrysalis)-Most butterflies have bright coloured wings, where as moths are plain brown, grey or white. The moths are better camouflaged due to their dull colours-Moths tend to have bigger, furrier bodies than butterflies-Butterflies tend to be diurnal where as moths are nocturnal-Moths will usually rest with their wings out- spread to the sides (see picture) where as butter-flies usually rest with their wings folded upwards

The life cycle of a moth is as follows:Moths (like butterflies) begin as an egg laid on a plant in clusters. The eggs take about a week to hatch into caterpillars. As the caterpillar grows it sheds its skin to permit growth, and this can hap-pen five to ten times. The caterpillar may change in appearance and colour with each shedding of the skin. Once the caterpillar is fully grown it spins a cocoon made of silk and leaves. Moths will remain inside the cocoon and metamorphose for a few days or even up to a few months, depending on the species.

The moth will emerge from the cocoon and take flight, and usually they will live for two weeks to two months as a flying moth.

GREAT GROVEOCEAN Grove Surf Lifesaving Club claimed their 10th consecutive club title at the 2009 Vic-torian Lifesaving Championships on the home soil of Main Beach.With a team of over 60 competitors and in front of a large supportive crowd, the club proved too powerful in a number of events across the two-day Championships.In rough conditions and less than perfect weather, over 950 lifesavers vied for a podium fi nish and the thrill of championship glory.However, the weekend belonged to Grove as they dominated in the surf, taking out the most anticipated events of the Championships the Open Women’s Iron, Open Men’s Iron and Open Men’s Taplin Relay.It was a matter of team rivalry between two Ocean Grove lifesavers Casee Honan and Har-riet Brown in the Open Women’s Iron event. Side by side the whole way, it was Casee who rode the best wave home on her way to a triumphant win.Blitzing the fi eld in the Open Men’s Iron was Ocean Grove SLSC competitor Mark Graham. Winning this event a couple of times throughout the season, it was one of Mark’s goals to take home the major title.For many competitors this was the last chance to pit themselves against the best the state has to offer before they jet to the 2009 Where Is® Australian Surf Life Saving Championships held WA from Tuesday next week.

Jack of all shades

GATTO is generally a name you learn to remember in Melbourne. That stands true with a young 17-year-old singer who has been making an impres-sion at one local night spot. Honorary local muso Jack Gatto has been wooing the Nectar Bar audience for about eight months. Solidly for six weeks over Christmas. Hard to believe the guy only started teaching himself to play chords less than two years ago. But an edgy charismatic personality and a bag of self-confidence could take him just a little further down the track. As well as regular spots at the Grove Nectar Bar he’s also been playing at charity events particularly in the Pascoe Vale area. But he’s brave. This year though he’s plan-ning to have a crack at Australian Idol. He’s certainly got the get-up-and-have-a-go attitude. Jack discovered the Grove and the Nectar Bar through his stepdad Malcolm Brown who lives here. It seems the Grove may also have discovered him.Check out his music on www.myspace.com/jackadamgatto

Retiree Bob Wheeler of Ocean Grove said: “I haven’t changed anything really; you have to be careful on a pen-sion. I am involved with the footy club; do a bit of fishing. A pretty simple life really, and it hasn’t changed much.”

Top job in top town for RoryRSN Roofing is a relatively new business run by Rory Nicol.

Rory has been in the roofing industry for 16 years and has a broad knowledge of roofing to meet his customers needs.

The business will cover all types of roof repairs as well as replacing roofs, new tile roofs and roof extensions.

Amongst other services, demossing, cleaning and painting, as well as rebedding and flexible pointing are available.

Rory was brought up in Geelong and moved to Ocean Grove when he was 17 after attending James Harrison College. He played football in Ocean Grove, St Albans and Lake Bolac and is

currently the assistant coach of the under 18’s in Ocean Grove.

He loves the idea of being able to work in and around the same town as where he lives and en-joys watching the footie and going to the beach with his daughter Charli, who will be 5 in April.

His business has started well and he is pretty busy. As he covers a variety of roofing areas, there is always plenty of work. Rory would like to es-tablish a strong customer base on the Bellarine Peninsular, as well as to grow his business into a household name where people are familiar with who he is and what he does.

Further down the track he would like to em-ploy an apprentice. He’s also interested in being

able to sponsor the local football club.He loves living in Ocean Grove because it is

away from the hustle and bustle of the big cit-ies, although close enough to Geelong or Mel-bourne if need be.

“It’s also an excellent spot to raise children with the excellent schooling facilities and beautiful beaches,” he said.

Grove at the Masters Games

Right: Wendy Cover came third in the100m free-style and 8th overall in the 50 – 59 age group. The 50m brought more success – 1st in her heat (19 heats of mixed age groups, 9 in a heat) and came 3rd overall, clinching a Bronze medal.

Surfside Waves put together a side for the competition - including some players that had never played competitive soccer before - coming up against sides like the Australian army’s national pick.

Cyclist Dennis Sonogan earned two bronze medals. Elaine James, gold powerlifting, silver weightlifting.

OCEAN Grove sportsmen and women got in the thick of the action at the recent Australian Masters Games in Geelong.

Admittedly many of the participants have nev-er stopped pulling on a jumper or swimming, weightlifting or cycling.

But you don’t often get the chance to compete on a national stage against evenly matched ages.

Some competitors went with local teams, oth-ers went as individuals, while some, like the women’s soccer players, couldn’t fi nd a local side and helped form a nation squad.

Local player Cath Sattler was so determined to

play in the competition that she joined the Aus-tralian All Stars. The team, which had players from as far as Sydney, Darwin and Queensland, went on to win the gold medal in the fi nal against MG Force.

The side was coached by Cathy’s other half Andy and also featured fellow Ocean Grover Helen Jacob.

IT’S been a big season at the Grove Bowling Club and members are hoping it gets bigger. At the time of writing, the men’s division has 6 out of 7 teams participating in the first round of finals.

The Ladies top 2 sides are also preparing to fight it out with Queenscliff and Clifton Springs for this years flag, hopefully we will have an all Ocean Grove final.

The past month has been a busy one for the club, with the Australian Masters Games, Junior Development verses the Victorian Intellectually Disabled squad and the Ocean Grove Classic Fours. The Classic was once again a huge success with many of the states top bowlers in action. The winning team consisted of the Grove’s Ken Thomas along with state bowl-ers Todd Simmons, Matt Flapper and Russell Simmonds. The runners up team also had a Grove rep in Gary Burkett who played third to Eric Spence with Tom Warren and John Walters. Our Ocean Grove side of Peter Pat-terson, Ron Brown, John McConville and Chris Deppeler performed very well taking some big scalps along the way to finish eleventh of the 36 strong field.

Last Sunday the Club hosted the Victorian Intellectually Disabled squad and the Geelong District Junior Development squad, the Geelong Giants. All players and spectators had an enjoyable day and it was great to see the respect shown by both groups. The Club provided a BBQ Lunch through the generous sponsorship of Peter and Maris Williams.

Congratulations to Brenda Anderson, Pat Virtue, Lorraine Jackson and Maree Hughes who were Runners Up in the State Fours recently.

Ocean Grove Junior Tennis ReportThe last two weekends saw some very close matches with the Grove boys and girls prevail-ing.The Section 10 boys won a thriller against Drys-dale with Jacob Platt winning his set 6-0, Chris-tian West winning his set 6-3 and then Jacob and Christian combining for a doubles win 6-2 for an overall 3-26 vs. 3-23 win.The Section 14 White Girls team had a 3-25 vs.

President Margaret Wylie of the Ocean Grove Bridge Club Inc.had great pleasure in presenting a cheque for $1,116.80 to Mari-Anne Dreher, Vice-President of Ocean Grove Red Cross as a donation to the Bush-fire Appeal. The Bridge Club conducted three fund-raising sessions over the prevous week which were well supported by its members.

COLLENDINA has won the inaugural Twenty20 competition after defeating St Albans/Breakwater in the grand fi nal. Outstanding cricket from Luke Buckland (57), captain Kade Norquay and clinical bowling helped Cobras overcome the slightly understrength Saints, their fi rst opponents come fi nals.
