Court for pics offencePOLICE have confirmed that a man was charged with taking inappropriate photographs at Bellarine Aquatic Centre. The incident was dealt with at Geelong Magistrates Court three months ago but has only recently come to light. A police spokeswoman said that a Grovedale man had been charged with taking photographs with his mobile phone and had received a diversion order. In such circumstances no conviction is recorded. The centre is run by the City of Greater Geelong and a spokesman said that it had “pursued a matter concerning conduct at the Bellarine Aquatic Centre to the full extent of its legal abilities.“We cannot comment on the matter because of the particular court ruling however we can confirm the matter does not involve a Council employee,” the spokesperson said.“The City can reassure patrons of the Bellarine Aquatic Centre that there is no ongoing issue which would impact on their enjoyment of the facilities at the centre,” the spokesperson said.

A DEDICATED Ocean Grove mother is hosting the seventh annual Clancy Family Diabetes Charity Golf Day.

Pauline Clancy’s 16-year-old son, Todd, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes eight years ago and ever since, Pauline has taken part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Ride to Cure.

To help aid Pauline’s fundraising ride tally, the Clancy family will host a golf day at the Ocean Grove Golf Club on Sunday, November 13. Pauline said fundraising was a big part of their lives as several recent breakthroughs had helped Todd’s diabetes management and were a step closer to a cure.

“There have been changes since his diagnosis that has made his management easier,” Pauline said.

“The insulin pump has changed our ability to manage his diabetes, it’s a lifestyle thing, and it makes

it easier to manage with his sport and things.”

Todd doesn’t let his diabetes impact on his love of sport; he plays everything from football to golf and spends hours on Ocean Grove beach. Pauline said Todd acted like a regular year 11 student, even starting driving lessons this year, but

just had to be that little bit more careful than his friends.

“It’s a balancing act between watching sugar levels and all that … you can do stuff but you just have to be more careful,” she said.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease that destroys the body’s ability to produce insulin - a hormone needed

to convert food into energy.About 122,300 Australian

people have type 1 diabetes.Teams of four are

encouraged to sign up for the golf day which tees off with a shotgun start at 9am. Tickets are $30 per person and include a barbecue lunch and silent auction.

Saturday Vinnies OCEAN Grove’s Vinnies op shop has restarted opening on Saturdays. The op shop is at number 18 Marine Parade on the Industrial Estate. Their Saturday opening hours are 9.30am to 1pm, as well as the usual Monday to Friday 10am to 4.30pm.

THE appearance of two large ships close to shore has caused a stir in town this week. Of the two, the Gibralter registered Beluga Houston has been anchored about 1.8 nautical miles from the shore since the begining of last week. According to Port Melbourne Harbour Authority the 168m cargo ship is ‘awaiting orders’. The other ship, the Maltese registered Lotus, moved on to the port by Saturday after a couple of days in the bay.

THE new Ocean Grove toilet block is starting to take shape in The Parade’s car park.

During the past fortnight builders have laid the concrete slab and raised the steel frame, giving residents an idea of how the final building would look.

Councillor Jan Farrell

said works on the replacement toilet block were running on schedule.

“The services are all in, concrete slab is poured, galvanised steel framing has been erected and the brickwork is now underway,” she said.

The project is expected to be completed by late October 2011.

CFA call outs

OCEAN Grove CFA has been called to five incidents in the town as well as others on the Bellarine Highway and Queenscliff in the last fortnight. The most recent was on Saturday morning when they joined Wallington crews alerted to a smoking car on the Wallington Road.

Continued from page 1. The site will also contain

a double storey communal building for independent residents, as well as visitor parking.

A spokeswoman from Geelong City Council said they hadn’t received any objections to the project before the August 21 deadline.

Ocean Grove Senior Citizen’s Club secretary Dianne Sapwell said the retirement village would provide much needed independent living facilities in Ocean Grove.

“It’s one of the most difficult things, the houses get too big for them and they need somewhere smaller where the gardens are looked after” she said.

Dianne said the proposed village would allow its elderly residents to keep in touch with their community without having to move away from Ocean Grove.

“It keeps them in the community with their friends and they can still go to the same library, the same shops, Probus and Legacy groups,” she said.

“One of the biggest downfalls when you’re 80 or 90 years old is it’s really difficult to make new friends.”

The proposed site will be accessed via Shell Road and contains two buildings which will be demolished to make way for the development.

The site has a number of native and exotic trees that were planted by previous owners as a windbreak to the property.

The majority of bordering trees will be retained by the developers while those to be removed will be done so without a permit as they were planted, not naturally growing.

Users pay their wayI sympathise with cyclists wanting the Thacker Street road surface widened and smoothed out so as to provide a safe surface to ride on, but I fail to see why the street residents should pay for it. What happened to the user pay principle, so frequently trotted out by State and Local govenments?

Cyclists and motorists want a smooth road? Fine, let them pay for it. And if they say they already do pay, through taxes, rates and vehicle registrations, then let that money be used to improve the road surface.

Instead of using our rates to subsidise the local Geelong franchise of the AFL footy business, use the money for what it is intended, viz. to provide sound public infrastructure.

Residents should not be required to pay for other people’s safe use of a road.

BOTH sides of the bridge will come together to form one bigger and better RSL club.

Barwon Heads RSL will amalgamate with the Ocean Grove club to form the new Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads RSL Subgroup from September 1.

Barwon Heads RSL president Tony Wheal said the move came about after their club was unable to form a committee.

“It happened because at the last annual general meeting, we were unable to form a full committee as there were no nominations for treasurer or secretary,” he said. “Without those two office bearers, it’s practically impossible to form a committee.”

Tony said after discussions and a vote, they decided to amalgamate with Ocean Grove RSL.

“We will be a joint RSL as of the first of September but will have representatives on the Ocean Grove committee,” he said.

Ocean Grove president Keith Hankin said the joint group would hold meetings at Ocean Grove’s Club

Grove every third Monday of the month.

“Members of both sub branches have welcomed the amalgamation and look forward to successful future development,” he said.

Keith said the original RSL club in the area was made up of men from both sides of the river who met from 1948

until 1962 when the Ocean Grove sub branch split.

“It is said that life does the full circle, and in this case it is true,” he said. The new charter for the combined group will be presented by Colonel Michael Arnett at the next general meeting on September 19.

The Barwon Heads RSL

hall will be kept by the group for town-based RSL events

“They have committed to keeping the Barwon Heads RSL building; that will be retained for things like ANZAC day,” Tony said.

Barwon Heads RSL is made up of 65 members with about 40 transferring to the combined group. With

about 140 Ocean Grove members, the group will swell to about 200 members.

“Because Ocean Grove is a lot bigger in terms of numbers, (the club) will be a lot stronger,” Tony said.

“It’s definitely a positive move as it’s the only way Barwon Heads could go in the end.”

RSL bridges divide

JOINING FORCES: Tony Wheal and Keith Hankin are thrilled to be amalgamating.

NEIGHBOURS of a proposed Class B Broiler farm that would house more than 300,000 chickens have rallied in opposition at the weekend.

The meeting was called by the newly formed Bellarine Guardians, a group of concerned local businesses and residents, who say such a farm at 161 Curlewis Road would have a detrimental effect

on local living conditions and tourism.

One of the major concerns they have is that the smell from the plant would drift over the area and make outdoor activities unattractive.

The applicant argues that filters will eliminate the odours. Residents have until Saturday (Sepember 10) to make their views known to Geelong Council.

Chook farm objectors rally

Hurricane Irene spares Ocean Grove

BROILER PLAN: the site of the proposed chicken broiler off Curlewis Road, Wallington.

NOT HAPPY: about 150 objectors to the broiler chicken farm plan attended a public meeting at Wallington Adventure Park on Saturday. Inset are two of the speakers Lydsay Sharp of Leura Park Estate Vineyard and Ron Salmon of the Adventure Park.

OUR namesake in New Jersey was right in the path of the destructive Hurricane Irene that tore along the US eastern seaboard last month.

The Voice was alerted after receieving an email from a conerned statesider seeking information on how the town had fared. It isn’t unusual to get enquiries, as in the story we ran last year on the blizzards that

submerged the town. In the spirit and in

the knowlegde that the other Ocean Grove is renowned for its historic buildings, we replied that we would look into it and find out.

A little research and we found this blog report suggesting that fortunately damage was ‘minimal’.

“Surveying Ocean Grove as I walked around

town and the beach this morning, the only signs of damage were small branches strewn about in the street. The only evidence that a “hurricane” occurred, was the ocean surf pounding 75-100 feet from the boardwalk, picket fences that protect the dunes were thrown about, while cement park benches were displaced by powerful ocean

tides spilling onto the boardwalk.

“Ocean Grove never lost power, and there was no sign of dangerous wind and torrential downpours wreaking havoc this morning. I slept through the night soundly, something that has not happened during previous storms, and was surprised that this morning was not so different than other

Sunday mornings. That being said, it’s business as usual, with the exception of businesses needing to dismantle plywood from their storefronts and open for business, and for residents to come back home.”

Some pier damage was also shown in photographs of the town.

Other than that, the town did a good job in protecting itself.

DROPPED signals, patchy sound and failed calls will soon be a thing of the past for Ocean Grove mobile users.

Telstra and the Vodafone/3 group have both proposed upgrades to their facilities in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads meaning increased coverage for mobile users.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia, which controls Vodafone and 3 Mobile, will be adding new services to an existing Telstra exchange tower located at Golf Links Road, Barwon Heads.

A Vodafone spokeswoman said the installation is part of a nation- wide roll out of Vodafone infrastructure.

“Vodafone users will see significant improvements in coverage, this will echo across the entire Bellarine Peninsula as new sites are progressively built,” she said.

The project will include adding three panel antennas and two radio communications dishes to an existing tower meaning

increased 2G and 3G coverage for mobile users in Ocean Grove.

“Works on the Bellarine Peninsula will supplement existing coverage and provide new coverage to certain areas, both 2G and 3G,” Vodafone said.

Telstra has also proposed work on its Everist Road tower, in Ocean Grove’s industrial estate.

A Telstra spokesman said the proposed upgrades would provide additional capacity in the Next G network in Ocean Grove.

“Data use is doubling approximately every 12 months on the Next G network, so Telstra continues to invest in upgrading the network so that customers will experience the reliability and speeds they have come to expect with this network,” he said. Both projects are due to be completed by the end of 2012.

OCEAN Grovers are being encouraged to register for Bellarine’s first Relay for Life.

Relay For Life will involve teams of locals taking turns to walk or run through the night around Collendina Reserve to raise funds for Cancer Council Victoria.

The relay lasts for 24 hours from noon on Saturday, November 12, until noon the next day. Money raised will fund cancer research to help Bellarine residents – 1183 people in the Geelong area were diagnosed this year – reduce their cancer risk.

Bellarine Relay For Life co-ordinator Naomi Young said Relay For Life empowered every local resident to fight back against cancer.

“One in two Victorians will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85, so we all have a reason to help fight the disease,” she said. “(It) is an opportunity for us to band together and celebrate with cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against cancer.”

A team registration night will be held at Collendina Reserve on September 13 at 6.30pm.

OCEAN Grove Men’s Shed has come home. The group which held its first planning meeting at the town’s Neighbourhood Centre just two years ago has moved into a 66sqm industrial estate unit thanks to the generosity of the Kingston Estate group.

The estate, via local Ed Corless, has granted members the use of the building, which also includes space for gardening and parking, for two years rent free.

The Men’s Shed, which had been operating temporarily out of a Queenscliff Neighbourhood House, is now keen to grow its 20-member group.

Member Ernie Mason said members were flat chat getting the new shed fitted out during the two days it currently opens and he was embracing the opportunity to get involved.

“I have always been an active sort of bloke and need something active to keep me going since I retired,” Ernie said.

As well as providing mainly retirees with something to do physically, Men’s Sheds are proven to have been valuable places for mental stimulation and an environment where men can talk freely about health issues.

“There’s also the interaction with other blokes, that’s something

I’d always had, having worked in manufacturing or construction,” added Ernie. “It’s completely drop-in style, come if you want, don’t if you don’t want.”

The new Ocean Grove and District Men’s Shed is located at 17 Smithton Grove, off Grubb Road.

As well as wood and metal

working areas the building also includes a mezzanine floor for painting and an outside flower bed which will be developed for gardening interests. Members have already started a small line of wooden toys and there are plans to set up a small display of products for sale. The proceeds of those sales will

go back into the Shed coffers. The Shed is open on

Mondays from 9am to 3pm and Wednesdays from 9am to noon.

• Members are still seeking a 140 litre fridge as well as hand and power tools. The Men’s Shed will also be seeking sign sponsors. Phone 5255 2827.

HOME AT LAST: Ocean Grove Men’s Shed is moving in.

AN ELDERLY woman was unhurt after she drove a car into a wall at Madeley Street’s Ocean Wave Salon.

Ocean Wave owner Narelle Whitson said the woman narrowly missed driving through the front window of the shop about 9.25am last Thursday.

“Her foot slipped and she hit the accelerator and drove up in between the

tree and the seat out the front, and into the brick wall,” she said.

“The car, I would say, would be a write off, her (side) rear vision mirror had gone and the other side was smashed up because of the seat.”

Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene.

Narelle said the woman,

believed to be 87 years old, was one of the regulars who had a weekly appointment at the salon.

“She’s got a great sense of humour; she said she didn’t want to be late for her appointment,” Narelle said.

Despite the damage to the car, there was no evidence of damage to the wall.

Work on Thacker StreetCOUNCIL mainten-ance teams have been at work on Thacker Street repairing the worst of the hardshoulder pot holes, recently highlighted in the Voice.

City engineering staff are currently designing road widening measures for the street and would include new kerbing and channelling on the south

side of Thacker Street, between Presidents Avenue and Tuckfield Street.

Those construction works are expected to begin in 2012, a council spokesman said.

day in the life – philip christian

I REMEMBER in the late 70’s coming to a weekend conference at Ingamels. At about 7am a mate and I raced down Hodgson St and ran straight into the surf. Iron Men, we were.

Finishing Uni, I taught at Braemar College, Woodend for three years, during which we had snow and the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

In 1984, Dad and Mum were planning to retire from farming in the Mallee to find a home somewhere in the Geelong region. The first house they inspected was exactly what they wanted, at 14 Woodlands Dve, so they were moving in when I organised a Kew Baptist Youth Camp Surfari weekend in March 1985. I created a wood throwing competition and that’s how Dad’s truck-load of firewood got unloaded.

Donna and I met at LaTrobe Uni. We bought a house in Endeavour Dve just before we took Emma and Simon to Zambia, where we lived on a mission for 7 years. Ryan was born in Harare. We all loved holidays in Zimbabwe’s game parks or in South

Africa. Donna and I celebrated our 30th this year.

As security problems increased, the kids were being driven to school with a para-military man beside them, holding an AK47. By 1993 we were ready to try school in Ocean Grove, and our kids were among the group to trek from OG Primary to the new facilities at Surfside. Life-long friendships were formed in those days.

I got involved with cycling and Ocean Grove Harriers. The feature event was the Pub to Pub and the Mt Buller run. Our boys got into local junior basketball and football at the YMCA, and then with Ocean Grove FNC, so Donna and I joined in and I was on the Committee. 2003 was great when the Grubbers won all three grades’ premierships.

I play some tennis, paddle on my surf ski, or have a ride on the bike, but mostly, I run.

The three kids and I ran at the Gold Coast in July. Ryan and I will run the Great Ocean Road (Walking track) over two days this month before

he departs for Qatar where he’ll be continuing his PhD.

I love the diversity of tracks and the water facilities we have here. I enjoy being able to incorporate this into many of my working days at bellarine memories. There is no routine to any of this. I am glad that on many-a-friday I cannot even guess what I’ll be doing by Monday. There is the joy of weddings, and the

deep sense of being a real support through funerals, listening to stories, planning celebrations. Now we are doing more diverse things, including assisting people to record their stories as keepsakes. We have been six years in this special work, and value good connections in the community, through the various clubs, sporting, business and service, the churches, and the RSL.

Living at Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads is very special. Our community will continue to grow. Our greatest asset remains the main beach. This is where I would have built a magnificent glass fronted tourist centre, gazing out to sea, for us all to share what we have.

And I have no plans to go anywhere else.

CONTENT WITH DIVERSITY: Philip Christian sees all sides of the human spirit.

BELLARINE Secondary College year 8 students have just experienced the best that Melbourne could offer on their “zoo snooze” camping adventure.

The students have taken part in a variety of activities on the Zoo Snooze Camp, which included walking along Southbank, going to the Victoria Market and taking a river cruise along the Yarra River.

The students were able to take part in a variety of activities, including a guided tour around the Aquarium and the Shrine of Remembrance and were given the unusual chance to sleep over night at the zoo.

They were also given the rare opportunity to have a guided tour of the zoo after dark and in the morning, before the other guests arrived. Some of the campers were also able to take a Yarra River cruise, weather permitting and to experience the culture of Lygon Street.

Vice principal, John Shepherd said: “It was a valuable experience and the students get to know the city in a different light.”

Some of the students have not been to Melbourne over night and this gives them a great insight into the world.

Refugee experienceAS part of their literature studies this term the year 6 students at Christian College Bellarine have been studying the theme of Difficult Journeys. Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman has been the core text for this unit of work. It is the story of a young Afghan boy and his family who flee their

country to seek asylum in Australia. The journey as boat people is a perilous one and in light of current affairs and headline news in Australia the discussions have been very fruitful. As part of Refugee Day the students were given new identities and forced to flee their country with

their families for a variety of reasons such as famine, war, natural disaster and persecution. After walking a long distance to reach the refugee camp they had to register their family before entering the camp and building a shelter. Some of the other activities of the day included preparing their

meagre rations for their family, collecting water and carrying out various chores. The plight of asylum seekers and refugees is a very powerful issue and the students have been encouraged to develop their own opinions about the topic which has been very encouraging to see.

YOUNG musicians from the Christian College Bellarine campus have had two very fulfilling weeks, performing at Monash University (Clayton) and Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat.

Students from the Concert Band (above) and Middle School String orchestra delivered very fine performances.

At the Melbourne School Bands Festival (Clayton), the Bellarine Concert Band was

awarded Gold. They followed this up with a score of 93/100, awarding them 3rd place out of 13 junior bands from around Victoria, at the Royal South Street Society’s Band Eisteddfod in Ballarat.

AN Ocean Grove student has had her painting on display for Geelong café-goers as part of a local art competition.

Molly Winter, 12, (pictured right) entered her painting into the Masters in the Making competition that showcased work by budding artists from ages five to 18, in café displays around Geelong.

Molly was runner up in the competition after her painting, inspired by Ocean

Grove, was judged by local art critics at Café Go.

Molly’s mum Anna said Molly has been taking part in classes at Kazworks, run by local artist Karen McGlynn, for the past 18 months.

Anna said Molly painted her picture at the end of 2010 as part of the new Ocean Grove’s Westpac bank opening.

“They had to be inspired by Ocean Grove, and Molly chose the sea with her sister and her in the boat,” she said.

A NUMBER of St Ignatius staff and students braved the cold and wind to participate in a winter sleep-out.

The group built cardboard shelters to recreate the hardship homeless people face, and raise awareness for disadvantaged youth. The students raised more than $1700 for the Christ Church Community Meals Program. Social justice co-ordinator Heather Johnston said it was important to have students experience things outside their comfort zone.

BELLARINE Landcare is hosting a community information day at the Bellarine Secondary College Landcare Nursery.Run by the Landcare group, the information day will be held on Saturday, September 17, from 9am until noon.Visitors can learn about Bellarine Landcare’s revegetation techniques, local biodiversity values, protection and enhancement of the Bellarine Peninsula’s ecological assets and pest, plant and animal management. Bellarine Landcare’s co-ordinator Cate Barham said it was important to engage the community about local environment issues.

“With only five per cent remaining indigenous (native) vegetation on the Bellarine Peninsula, it is important the community be involved in protecting and enhancing their local environmental assets,” she said. Volunteers will also inform the community of the group’s gorse removal project which aims to give land-holders assistance to manage its growth on their properties. Gorse is a noxious weed and a fire hazard that provides habitats for feral animals and significantly degrades local biodiversity values. For more information phone 0457 333 727.

Cow magnet Cattle Egret

Landcareinformation

IF you drive down the Barwon Heads Road from Geelong and look in the paddocks, (ignore the paddocks being turned into a housing estate at Armstrong Creek), there are often a few Cattle Egrets wandering in the footsteps of the cows. The Cattle Egret is commonly seen with grazing stock around wetland areas.

Cattle Egrets are small, white Egrets with a yellow beak. In the breeding season the feathers turn yellow and the beak becomes bright red. The legs are normally grey-green out of breeding season, but they change to bright red or orange-brown during breeding.

This change in colour during the breeding season is one aspect that distinguishes the Cattle Egrets from other types of Egrets (Little, Intermediate and Great Egrets can also be seen around this area).

The Cattle Egret is now found on nearly every continent, with birds in Australia originating

from Asia. In Australia it is most widespread and common in north-eastern Western Australia, Northern Territory, and in south-eastern Australia from Bundaberg, Queensland to Port Augusta, South Australia. They are also found in Tasmania.

The Cattle Egret is found in grasslands, woodlands and wetlands but not common in arid areas. They feed by following large animals such as cows, and grabbing insects such as grasshoppers and worms in their sharp beak that the cattle have disturbed with their feet.

They also will sit on cattle to look out for insects. They also eat frogs, lizards and toads. The relationship with cattle is beneficial to the cattle as well, as the Cattle Egrets help to reduce the numbers of crop pests and cattle ticks.

So look out for these lovely birds as you drive down the Barwon Heads Road to ‘The Grove’!

SIX local dancers have had their first taste of a solo ballet competition.

Students from Bellarine Dance Academy participated in the Geelong Eisteddfod’s solo ballet competition last week in preparation for their

first professional exams in October.

Bellarine Academy of Dance director Kellie Williamson said the girls did extremely well for their first solo performance.

“They did well for their

first time, unfortunately didn’t win but one of the girls did get an honorable mention,” she said.

The year eight students from around Ocean Grove and the Bellarine Peninsula practise their art in Ocean

Grove for up to five hours a week. “That group of girls started when they were four (years old) and now they’re 13 and 14,” said Kellie.

“They are all really dedicated kids, they don’t just do their five hours a week

but participate in holiday programs and go to classes at the Australian Ballet’s open days.”

The girls will now train to perform their first solo vocational exams in Melbourne in October.

SCHOOL kids are being encouraged to participate in R U OK? Day by visiting Ocean Grove’s Gloria Jeans.

R U OK? Day is a national campaign aimed at reducing Australia’s suicide rate by encouraging people to ask their friends and family if they are ok.

Ocean Grove Gloria Jeans owner Jason Porter said the coffee chain was a major sponsor of the campaign and they had taken the

initiative to aim the day’s activities towards local school children.

“It’s a simple get together, if you have a friend, bring a friend and you can buy one (drink), get one free,” he said.

Jason said his family has been touched by youth suicide, so they had taken the opportunity to encourage school kids to come in and sit and talk over a drink.

“It’s important for the kids in years nine to 12, the pressure of

school and how busy everyone is these days, means kids are trying to manage everything like school work, a part time job and sport,” he said.

“The day is for everyone and a lot of people focus on adults but we’re focusing on kids, where it starts.”

R U OK? Day is on Thursday, September 15. For more information visit www.ruokday.com.au

ALL week I’m looking forward to Thursday, not Friday and not the weekend but Thursday. It’s the day I go to Jongleurs – and no, it isn’t a French class, it’s actually a drama club.

For me, it’s even more fun than going to “the worlds” in Queensland! It’s just awesome and I love it. I’ve made a few new friends and one of my BFFs met some of my other friends and now they’re good friends, so I

think it is a good place to make friends and have fun.

It’s a place for both genders, of all ages. This year the two different age groups are split up and each is doing a different play. I’m in the younger group and we’re doing The Golden Touch while the older group does Fairytale High.

At drama, we learn skills like being quiet back stage, remembering our lines and just acting in general.

You can watch these magnificent plays at the Potato Shed in Drysdale, on either Friday, September 9 or Saturday, September 10 at 7pm. Bookings at the Potato Shed or phone 5251 1998.

Tickets are very reasonably priced, so come one, come all, come and watch two hilarious plays.

“Seven majestic harps ... effortless virtuosity.

It’s difficult to imagine a more delightful musical evening.”

SOMETHING heavenly is coming to Barwon Heads – in the form of a seven harp ensemble. The group, the only one of its kind in Australia – perhaps even the world – is being hosted by the town’s Fine Music Society. She (Seven Harps Ensemble) will perform from classical pieces to ‘more daring’ Australian works. The society, which boasts a large number of Ocean Grove members, is hosting the performance at the Community Hall in Hitchcock Avenue from 2.30pm on Sunday September 11. Details 5254 2982.

JOHN Bacon Blues is a 3 piece blues band comprising John Bacon Vocals, Guitar and Harp, Danny Nolan on Bass and occasional Vocals and Michael Dickson on Drums.

The band is a young band keeping the old blues alive.

John has a busy solo calender around Melbourne and the Band plays many places including the H2O flood relief festival in February. They have also been invited to play 2 Blues festivals in the U.S.

John and Danny are both just 18 years old and Michael is 28.

The band puts a refreshing new feel to the old blues and brings places to life when they play, they already have a large following in the U.S. and are getting airplay in 6 states of Australia.

John is known for his guitar work and being “The kid with the voice of a 50 year old”, He already has the respect of a large number of Melbourne’s established blues musicians with many of them asking to play with him. Originally Danny was the 2nd guitarist in the band with a strong metal influence but after a lineup change in June, Danny has found himself playing

bass and offering a huge personality on stage. You never know quite what he is going to do.

Michael is the quiet achiever of the band having 14 years experience and being an incredibly talented drummer. He is also the house drummer for the Gippsland Rhythm

and Blues club and is keenly soughtafter.

The band was offered the 3rd of September to play at the Ocean Grove Hotel but had to decline as John is playing the final showcase of the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society’s Youth in Blues.

John Bacon Blues will be hitting the stage at the Ocean Grove Hotel on Saturday 10th September at 10.30pm and are all geared up to rock Ocean Grove into Sunday. You can get a sneak preview of the band at www.reverbnation.com/johnbaconblues.

JOHN Patrick Shanly’s Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play, Doubt is set in a New York Catholic school in 1964, a time when the winds of political change are sweeping through the country.A charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to overturn

the school’s strict customs, long guarded by Sister Aloysius who believes in the power of fear and discipline. When Sister James, a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much

attention to the school’s first black student, Sister Aloysius begins a crusade to unearth the truth and remove Flynn from the school.Without a shred of evidence except her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father

Flynn, and a battle with devastating consequences ensues.Geelong Repertory Theatre Company is presenting Doubt, directed by Sarah Freeman, at the Woodbin Theatre from September 8. Tickets: 5225 1200 or www.gpac.org.au

Four years in a row

Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Little Athletics Club has won the winter cross country trophy for the fourth year in a row.

Waves roll into finalsSURFIDE Waves can look forward to some exciting finals football, although there were some surprising scores at the weekend.Senior Men: Surfside 1 Vs Corio 6. A shock result for the Waves leading up to the finals and ends an extended run of victories. Nick Hargreaves scoring the only goal for the Waves. Sen Women: Surfside Vs Geelong Rangers. Surfside won on a forfeit and maintain second place on the ladder.U/17 Boys: Surfside 0 Vs Corio 16. Defended well against the second top team, keeping them scoreless for the first 30 minutes. As in other weeks our lack of subs started to tell as we began to tire and were eventually overrun. Great game from Travis Edmonds at sweeper and also Stephen Campbell in the middle of the defence. So ends what was a very tough season for the U17’s.

Our lack of experience, a squad of only 12, & a very high quality competition made things very difficult for the boys. However all 12 picked themselves up after each heavy defeat and continued to give everything they had, week after week. Their efforts in the face of such overwhelming odds

have won great respect for them and the club. Well done to all of you.U/15 Boys: Surfside 6 Vs Barwon 1. Another commanding performance from the boys who should be very confident leading into the finals. Jacob Nicholson continued his scoring run with 2, John Black 2, Robert Black and Benjamin Zebic 1 each. Well done boys on an outstanding season.U/13 Boys: Surfside 0 Vs Surfcoast 1.U/12 Boys: Surfside 2 Vs Barwon 1. The boys finished off the league season in great style and played some good football scoring first against Barwon. Barwon put up a good fight and managed to equal the score 1-1 at half time. The Surfside boys continued to play well and had the better of Barwon in the second half. Final score 2-1. Goal scorers were Rory Dean

and Connor O’Keefe.U/15 Girls: Surfside 0 Vs Kardinia 3. The score line didn’t reflect the closeness of the game between 2 evenly matched teams. The difference was that Kardinia were able to capitalise on their goal scoring chances whilst the Waves were unable to get the ball over the line. The girls are playing well leading up to the finals and should challenge strongly.U/13 Girls: Surfside 3 Vs Barwon 0. The girl’s outstanding season continued with a hard fought win against a determined Barwon team. The Waves led 2-0 at half time and despite many attacks during the second half only managed 1 more goal due to some terrific defending by Barwon. Goal scorers: Caitlin Pickett 2, Mikki Clark-Adams 1. Small Sided Games: U/11 Red Vs U/11 BlueU/9’s Vs Breakwater Eagles.

Nick Hargreaves scored the only goal for Waves men in their shock defeat by Corio.

The outstanding Surfside Waves under 13 girls line up ahead of their 3-0 win over Barwon.

LOOK out for this gifted Ocean Grove sports star.

His name is Thomas Bean and he can play AFL and Gridiron at a high level.

The 16-year-old is Vice-captain of the Ocean Grove Division 1 Under 16’s, while in the summer months he swaps his AFL footy boots for the helmets and shoulder pads of Gridiron.

The American-born teenager, who was raised in California, plays for local based Geelong region Gridiron team, the Bay City Bucaneers.

“Thomas and (his older) brother Matthew were both born in America, I’m not sure if it was the air they breathe over there to show any interest in Gridiron,” mother of Thomas, Helen Bean laughed.

“His elder brother Matthew just looked into the local team which is Bay City Buccaneers.”

Thomas plays as a defensive back in Gridiron, while in the AFL he is a key defender playing at Centre-half back or also in the Centre for

the Grubbers.Father of Thomas said Andrew,

describes the benefits of his structured tackling training in Gridiron and how that improves his AFL defensive skills.

“He (Thomas) has been formally taught how to tackle and he can

take that knowledge, even with the pads off into how he tackles when he plays AFL,” Andrew said.

“His tackling playing Gridiron has really helped him in his footy because it has taught him the safe way to tackle and the way to keep your head down.”

Thomas and his brother Matthew Bean recently (July 5-13) played for Australia against the USA in the 2011 Gridiron Australia Down Under Bowl XXIII at the Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast.

This is the second time this year that Thomas and Matthew have played for Australia.

In January this year, they travelled to American Samoa to represent Australia in Samoa Bowl XI.

The St Joseph’s College Student, who spent four years living in America as a youngster and now stands at over six foot tall, is a keen supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL (National Football League).

Grove juniors in grand thrillersTHE 2011 winter season came to a conclusion at the end of August with the grand finals being played in lovely, sunny conditions.

Ocean Grove had 3 teams in grand finals. Two teams were victorious, whilst the other narrowly lost!

Section 1 Boys – The boys continued their strong form in the finals, easily accounting for Geelong Lawn; 5 sets 34 to 1 set 16. Josh Hudson and Tom Wesols proved pivotal in the win, winning their singles 6-2 and 6-1. Well done to Josh, Tom, Phillip, Matt and Jarryd on a terrific season!

Section 10 Mixed Red – After a comfortable semi final win, the team was looking to secure the win, however it was not to be, losing to Moolap in a tight contest, 3 sets 24 to 3 sets 27. Despite the loss, Savannah, Lachlan, Eloise, Steven, Dylan and Kaitlyn have had a tremendous season.

Section 17 Mixed – The team consisting

of Georgie, Michael, Abigail, Robert and Audrey topped off an awesome season with a grand final win!

On top of that they were also crowned champions after going through the season undefeated. Abigail Williams played great tennis and was rewarded with a 6-1 win in singles and a 6-3 win in doubles after combining with Robert Mitten.

The winter presentations were held on the 27th of August. The winners were as follows: Highest Aggregate Girl – Hannah Attard; Highest Aggregate Boy – Jarryd Proctor; Sportsmanship Award – Uzair Shah.•The summer tennis season starts October 15th. OCEAN Grove’s house prices are holding fi rm and sales are steady despite large percentage reversals in other towns

in the region. The reason, according to Property Victoria fi gures, is that home owners in many regional coastal areas are hanging onto their seaside properties while comparatively affordable towns like the Grove are still proving the biggest draw card for seachangers. The 4th quarter median house price in

Ocean Grove rose from 366,500 in 2007 to 375,000 in 2008 – equaling a 2.3 per cent increase.

That compares to a minus 4.3 per cent fall in Jan Juc and an 18 per cent fall in Barwon Heads – from $500,000 in 2007 to $410,000. However, according to local agents the fi gure is somewhat distorted by the number of house sales in Ocean Grove (111 in 2007 and 52 in 2008) and Barwon Heads (37 and 20) and Ocean Grove’s larger number of $300-400,00 bracket homes which remains the strongest market. Owners with million dollar properties are not selling.

A Welcome launch

MOST of Ocean Grove’s junior sides will be playing in the grand finals this weekend after some exciting preliminary netball over the last two weekends.

U 11: Being a young age group there is no specific finals for the under 11 teams. Instead a round robin is held, at which our Grove girls played consistently and won overall. Well done to all the girls for their effort on the day and during the year.

U 13 (1): The girls played a tight semi final against a strong Drysdale team and managed to come out on top by just one goal. The win under great pressure put the Grove girls straight through to the grand final. Keely Babb was named as best player for shooting the winning goal for the team. Other best players included Taya Payne and Sami Gravener.

U 13 (2): After settling into their semi-final, the team pulled off a convincing win over Drysdale of 27-14. The girls are now looking forward to playing in the grand final. Best players on the day were Keely Peatling, Emily Prendergast and Michaela Giblin.

U 13 (4): The young Grove girls came up against a physically stronger Torquay team in their semi final and had a disappointing loss by only two goals. Torquay got the jump on the match following a nervous start by an intimidated Ocean Grove team. Carla Warren was named as best player for jumping into a defensive position after

Hayley Grasso suffered a twisted ankle following a daring intercept. This team has a second chance and will play in the preliminary final on Friday night at Kardinia Park. Good luck to the girls.

U 15 (1): An inspirational game by the girls led to a fantastic win by one goal over Torquay. A controversial umpiring decision could have caused an unwanted distraction for the girls but didn’t stop Molly Babb putting the winning goal through for the Grove team. Keely Boswell and Zanna Woods were named as best players along with Molly. The under 15’s are now in full preparation for the grand final.

U 15 (2): The team had a hard match against Torquay in the semi final, with the end score reading 22-19 Torquay’s way. Alannah Nicol, Meg Badrock and Alice Digby were cited as the best players. Fortunately the girls had a second chance and won their preliminary final against Drysdale with ease, 25-12.

The game was a great improvement from the semi and left the girls feeling ready for the grand final. The best players were Meg Badrock, Maddy Godger and Amy Gibbs.

U 15 (3): Excellent defence from both the Grove girls and their opposition, St Mary’s, provided a great game for the spectators. The final score went Ocean Grove’s way, 27-19. This put the girls straight through to the grand final in two weeks.

U 17 (1): In a hard fought and physical semi final the girls went down to Queenscliff by a margin of just one goal. The best players included Laura Ellis, Emma Doolan and Molly Babb, who was filling in from the under 15’s. However, this team also had a second chance and consequently played off against Anglesea in the preliminary final. Another close game ensued, in which the Grove girls managed to forge ahead in the last quarter and maintain the lead to win by three goals. Emma Doolan, Kelsey Ollis and Shelby Hackett were named as the best players. The team will now look forward to a grand final battle.

U 17 (2): A semi final match against Drysdale unfortunately resulted in a loss by the Grove girls, the end score being 25-30. After a nervous start the team got better as the game went on but couldn’t quite break Drysdale’s hold on the match. Among the best players were Erin Mercer, Alysse O’Keefe and Brooke Walter. This team also had a second chance and played off in the preliminary final against Torquay. However, following a BFL best and fairest win during the week by Alysse O’Keefe, a bout of food poisoning then prevented her from playing in the preliminary final on Saturday. She watched from the sidelines as the girls unluckily went down by nine goals. Erin Mercer was again named best player along with Brigid England and Lauren Barber. The team are now looking forward to next season.

GEELONG AMATEUR ended Ocean Grove’s chances of having a tilt at a fourth consecutive flag in the BFL Under 18 First Semi Final on Sunday.

Despite a gutsy third quarter fought out in driving rain, the margin to make up was just too big against a side too good to be overrun.

The Grubbers Under 18’s, who won premierships in 2008, 2009 and 2010, lost to Amateur by 25 points at Drysdale Recreation Reserve.

Final scores were Geelong Amateur 12.8.80 to Ocean Grove 8.7.55.

Ocean Grove Under 18 captain James

Bennett kicked three goals, while Aaron Habgood booted two majors.

Geelong Amateur will now play Drysdale in this Saturday’s BFL preliminary final.

The winner of the Amateur and Drysdale clash will meet Torquay in the BFL Grand Final on Saturday September 17.

Gutsy third quarter but too much ground to make up

Reserves live to fight another day GROVE’S twos have another chance at reaching the grand final thanks to their good league placing. The side was defeated 11.10.76 to 8.13.61 by Modewarre at Drysdale on Saturday and will now face Torquay in a do or die preliminary final on Saturday. The winner plays Mode’ in the grand final on September 17. Although grabbing heaps of possession, Grove were unable to convert enough majors, kicking 11 behinds in the third quarter. James Stapleton, Shaun Britt, Patrick West and David Gray all kicked two goals. Best on ground were Tim Baker, Patrick West, David Gray, Roscoe Portelli, Kaiden Long and Adam Donald.

THE GRUBBERS 2011 season came to an abrupt end with a deflating 26-point loss to Anglesea in the BFL First Semi-final on Sunday at Drysdale.

Final scores were Anglesea 19.8.122 to Ocean Grove 14.12.96.

Anglesea will now play Queenscliff in the BFL preliminary final on Saturday at Drysdale after the Coutas lost to Geelong Amateur by 45 points in last Saturday’s Second-semi final.

Geelong Amateur progressed through to the BFL Grand Final on Saturday September 17 at Torquay.

The loss to Anglesea meant Ocean Grove, who finished the home and away season in second position, were knocked out of the finals race in the second week of the BFL finals.

Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor, who spoke exclusively to the Voice after the match, could not hide his disappointment following the loss.

“It is very much so a deflating way to end the season, we played good football throughout the season, we finished second because we played good football,” a sombre McGregor said after

the match. However the Grubbers

coach was pleased with the side’s improvement in 2011, where Ocean Grove made finals after finishing in sixth position in 2010.

The first quarter saw Anglesea gain the early ascendancy with a seven-goal opening blitz to lead the Grubbers by 16 points at quarter time.

The momentum shifted in the second quarter, as the Grubbers regained composure and booted six majors to hold a vital five-point margin against Anglesea at half-time.

“There was an end that was a goal scoring end and it had been during the Under 18’s

and Reserves on the day, and Anglesea kicked into that end in the first quarter,” he said.

McGregor said the third quarter was a key catalyst behind his side’s loss, Anglesea kicking eight goals to Ocean Grove’s one major to lead by 39 points at the final break.

“Our attack on the footy dropped off in the third quarter, we gave away three or four 50 metre penalties, some bad habits crept in, and we started worrying about umpiring decisions,” McGregor said.

“We were worrying about everything that we couldn’t control and the one thing we could control was the attack

on the footy and even that dropped off.

“It was undisciplined, we were undisciplined, we did not follow instructions.”

McGregor said Anglesea thoroughly deserved their win and accepted that the Seas took control in the ruck under the influence of former Geelong AFL player David Mensch.

Ocean Grove went into the match without key tall Tom Foott, who was ruled out earlier in the week with a fractured wrist following the Grubbers’ 69-point loss to Queenscliff in the first qualifying final. “David Mensch took the game apart, we couldn’t stop him, he was

just brilliant….when he went into the ruck, he just killed us,” he said.

Brodie Donald kicked six goals and Marcus Smith four goals for Anglesea, while 2011 Grubber newcomer Pete Corredig was Ocean Grove’s best player with his four goals.

Ocean Grove and Anglesea played against each other on two occasions during the 2011 home and away season, with both sides winning once.

The Kangaroos won the Round two encounter at Ocean Grove by 17 points, while the Grubbers won the Round 11 clash by six points at Anglesea.

Sad end to great seasonGrove can look back on a positive seaason despite losing out to Anglesea at the weekend.
