BLOKIE builder Scott Cam traded tool chat with locals when he visited Wallington’s Mitre 10 store.

And he also revealed another more artistic bent. The former chippie turned star of The Block, Backyard Blitz and Renovation Rescue, just to mention a few of his shows, met shoppers, tradies and staff during his flying promotional visit last month.

Dressed in his typical blue, kaki and workboots, Scott spent time chatting, signing autographs and even checking out power tools for his own shed.

Some just wanted to say g’day to the easy-going fella, while others wanted photos on cameras, phones - even an iPad.

There were even a few startled faces as they walked passed him and suddenly realised who they

had just nodded at. Asked if this was his first time in the area, Scott said it was, although he had done “a lot of Backyard Blitz’s in Geelong”.

Of all the tools, Scott was most enamoured with a sliding chop saw. It was “perfect” for his workshop, he said. But the talk wasn’t all planes, routers and cordless drills.

On a walk through the timber

yard he quickly diverted Voice snapper Alan Barber’s banter about carpentry onto his own growing passion for photography.

Turns out Scott has recently splashed out on some Canon kit and being a sponge for more knowledge he landed a heap of technical questions.

In all, Scott spent about an hour at the store before heading back to his home in New South Wales.

THE environmental and possible sporting future of Ocean Grove’s Kingston Park is up for discussion.

The City wants to hear what Grove residents and park users think of proposals to balance environmental protection with better access and increased recreational use of the northerly park.

Ocean Grove community members are invited to have their say at a community workshop next Wednesday, October 12.

Councillor Jan Farrell said the City was keen to hear from local residents about their hopes for the future of the park.

“We saw the need to develop a master plan to provide clear direction for the future management of the reserve,” she said.

“The plan will be developed in close consultation with the local community, in particular the CFA, Rotary (Craft Market Management Committee), Geelong Field Naturalists, Guides and other park users.”

Kingston Park is about 2.5 hectares with mixed bushland, recreation facilities and an open space used for the popular Sunday craft market.

The park is also home to a healthy population of rare Bellarine yellow gum and remnant endangered grassy woodland within.

The City’s Conservation Reserves Team controls weeds and conducts ecological burning within the reserve.

Man chargedwith theftPOLICE arrested an alleged shoplifter from Ocean Grove’s Home Hardware last week. Bellarine Police Acting Senior Sergeant, Dave Magher, said a 27-year-old Ocean Grove male was charged with 10 dishonesty charges including shop stealing and theft of a motorbike. “The hardware had footage of a man and a quick call from them meant we were able to come down and arrest him,” he said. The man was bailed to appear before the Geelong Magistrates’ Court next month.

FORMER Ocean Grove president Peter Cullen believes Brendan McCartney and Mark Neeld have all the right ingredients to be successful AFL head coaches.

McCartney, who led the Grubbers to four flags from 1994 and 1997, was announced as the new senior coach of the Western Bulldogs last month while Neeld, who took Ocean Grove to four premierships from 2000 to 2003, is the new man in charge at Melbourne.

Cullen, 69, served as president of the Ocean Grove Football Club from 1993 to 1999, and was a key catalyst in recruiting both McCartney and Neeld to the club. Before McCartney’s appointment at the Western Bulldogs, he served a long apprenticeship as an assistant coach at Richmond, Geelong and more recently Essendon.

“They interviewed very well and were extremely good coaches at Ocean Grove,” Cullen said.

“They will do well – they are both great people.

“I’m very proud to see their success.”

Before McCartney’s arrival at Ocean Grove in 1993, the Grubbers had failed to win a

premiership in the Bellarine Football League and were desperate for flag success.

While the Grubbers may have lost the 1993 BFL grand final to Barwon Heads, the following year enabled the Grubbers to initiate sustained premiership success under the tutelage of McCartney.

Cullen’s involvement with the Grubbers has spanned more than two decades including his stints as president, football manager and more recently his role as sponsorship co-ordinator.

“Both Neeld and McCartney are very different characters,” Cullen said.

“One thing they have in common is both have very good people’s skills.

“Mark Neeld loved playing the game – he was very passionate about the game.

“McCartney lived and breathed football and he hated losing.”

In an exclusive interview last week, Neeld told the Voice the passion to coach on a full-time basis came after the Grubbers won their

second flag under his reign 2001.

“After coaching Ocean Grove to back-to-back flags, I thought to myself ‘I can do this’,” said Neeld who worked at Collingwood as assistant coach from 2008 to 2011 before joining Melbourne last month.

“I want to coach and go to the highest level.”

Neeld, who lives in Ocean Grove, said he had met McCartney on a few occasions since his appointment at the Western

Bulldogs. Neeld, 40, said he was very proud of his Ocean Grove senior coaching upbringing.

“Brendan and I have caught up a few times since our appointments – we have a lot of hard work ahead of us,” he said.

“I have a lot of lifelong friends at Ocean Grove, I want still keep a foot in the area of Ocean Grove.

“The memories I have of Ocean Grove are great.”

Meanwhile Cullen said looking back at history it was always going to be a tough gig for a senior coach to take on the Grubbers in the late ’90s in between the McCartney and Neeld eras.

The Grubbers won eight senior BFL premierships in a ten-year period from 1994 to 2003.

“The first premiership under McCartney helped the sustained success at the Grubbers,” Cullen said.

When asked how he rated his time at Ocean Grove as president Cullen replied; “Absolutely it is the best thing I have ever done in my life.”

Cullen is a life member of the Ocean Grove Football Club and in 2008 he became a life member of the Bellarine Football League.

OCEAN Grove’s Shelley Gross knows just how important fundraising is for people with multiple sclerosis.Shelley’s best friend Nicole suffers from MS and was the inspiration for Shelley campaigning for the Ocean Grove Mega Swim to be held at the Bellarine Aquatic Centre on November 19 and 20.

The Mega Swim has teams of 12 to 15 people swim a relay of laps over a 24 hour period to raise money for MS Australia’s funding programs to increase MS sufferers’ quality of life.

Shelley said she was inspired to bring the event to Ocean Grove after hearing

about last year’s Geelong Mega Swim.

“I saw the ad last year for the Geelong one so I sent an email to MS Mega Swim asking them if they would consider having one in Ocean Grove,” she said.

“I have a girlfriend with MS and every year for the last three years I’ve participated in

the MS walk around Albert Park Lake and thought I would like to do something local.”

Shelley and Nicole will both take part in the event as part of team 6 Degrees and are encouraging people of all swimming abilities to join or create a team to take part.

“We’re not going to break

any records but it’s a social thing to have fun and fundraise,” Shelley said.

Organisers are hoping the inaugural Ocean Grove Mega Swim will become an annual fundraising event but needs community support to be a success. Details: www.megaswim.com or phone 0447 353 033 or 1300705341.

WISHFISHG I F T & H O M E

OCEAN Grove and Barwon Heads RSL sub-branches have been praised at the state level for their realistic and proactive approach to future membership.

The comments were made by Victorian RSL CEO Colonel Michael Annett ahead of presenting the clubs with their new amalgamation charter.

The clubs have joined together to form a bigger and better sub-group, based at Club Grove.

The move came about after Barwon Heads club was unable to form a full committee and follows in the success of Ocean Grove’s own rejuvenation from moving to the bowling club premises.

“Let me say how pleased the Victorian branch of the RSL is that the two sub branches have agreed to come together in this way, at this time,” Colonel Annett said.

“ It is something we would love to see emulated in a lot of other places around the state.

“The league (returned services) is going through a period of transition, as you would all be well aware.

The fact that you’ve had two members that have recently left us (passed away), is indicative of what we know is the inevitability of the next five to ten years when nearly all the second world war generation will leave us,” Colonel Annett said.

“Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove have a long and proud history of doing things in the traditional way to help their members and

other veterans and families in the community.

“Ocean Grove a few years ago saw that they really could not continue on in their current premises. It would have been a case of ‘would the last man out turn out the lights’.

“I think the story of coming to Club Grove in the last two years has been a tremendous success story. Many people who perhaps in the past

would not have thought about joining the RSL have since become members. Barwon Heads to its credit recognised a similar situation looming and has taken the steps ... to come together.

“I think the occasion today is a very significant one. You have played your part, in seeing realistically, the future and embracing that as something that needs to be done in a different way

to be viable in the future. It’s certainly a great example of how a little bit of lateral thinking and proactive approach can revitalise and reinvigorate an RSL sub- branch and we hope in future that will be reflected in a growing membership.”

Colonel Annett said the decision on what to do with the sub-branch building in Barwon Heads would be made by the members.

THE ex- HMAS Canberra is still closed to divers, almost three months after the wreck was deemed too dangerous to visit.

The dive site, about 2km off the coast of Ocean Grove, was closed on July 4 after it was found the helicopter hanger had come away from the main structure leaving dangerous obstacles to divers.

A Parks Victoria spokesman said inspections and works on the site have been delayed due to recent weather conditions.

“Unfavourable diving conditions have delayed inspections and any works required for public safety,” he said.

“Parks Victoria is keen to see the site open as soon as possible and will provide

updates and an indication of when the dive site will be reopening in coming weeks.”

Dive Victoria managing director Jason Salter said the length of the wreck closure was a case of waiting on political bureaucracy.

“We’ve been told that it’s a formality of paperwork and there have been no site works at all,” he said.

“It should never have been shut in the first place.”

Jason said dive operators who regularly visit the wreck have been left annoyed at the closure.

“It has definitely been frustrating for us as the Canberra is a particularly iconic part of Victoria’s diving package … over summer the site will attract local and interstate tourists who want

dive the wreck,” he said. Jason said he had been

informed the site should be open in a matter of weeks with the upcoming summer holidays and the two year scuttling anniversary.

“We have been told and have seen with our own eyes there is no safety reason why it should not be open for summer … we’re just waiting on a date from Parks Victoria,” he said.

Jason he is aware of the current condition of the wreck and believes it doesn’t pose any threat to divers.

“We want to really stress there is no danger in diving (the Canberra) and that its one of the safest of the 40-odd dive sites we have as it was properly prepared before it went down,” he said.

Melbourne Cup weekend

Please give thanksLast Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the annual general meeting of the Ocean Grove Business Association at the Bark Hut.

As well as being a great night of good food and loads of interesting conversations and networking, it saw the end of an important era in Ocean Grove’s history as Paul Drake retired from the role of president.

Although the meeting was well-attended, there were many of Ocean Grove’s residents and business-owners who weren’t given the opportunity to personally thank Paul for all his work on over the past ten years.

May I suggest that you wave your thanks as you go past the hardware store, or even go in to shake his hand.

I’d like to acknowledge Paul’s assistance on so many issues. His local knowledge has been invaluable and he’s been a joy to work with. I now look forward to a new era and wish Helen Butteris, the new President, and her new committee all the best.

WHAT THE ...VICROADS has reassured Ocean Grove residents that they haven’t been forgotten about, despite appearances. A glance at the two ends of the now complete Barwon Heads Bridge would lead locals to believe otherwise. However, a spokesman for VicRoads says there are plans for a pathway which links the carpark with the pedestrian bridge on the Grove side. He said VicRoads was finalising the planning and gaining the required planning approvals to enable construction to start.

THE Piping Hot Chicken Shop’s resident chook took time from laying eggs last week to pop into the Voice and catch up on the latest news from around town.

Briony and Allana were handing out $2 vouchers to people on The Terrace to entice them down to the Chicken Shop and try their new Jasper coffee.

BELLARINE Police are calling for community help to combat Ocean Grove crime.

Graffiti and theft from cars are the focus of local police over the school holidays and the upcoming summer period.

Acting Senior Sergeant, Dave Magher, said Ocean Grove residents were continuing to leave valuables in unlocked cars around town.

“If people could help us out by not leaving valuables in cars and if not, at least putting them out of sight and locking their cars,” he said.

“Opportunistic theft is

really hard to combat as there are usually no witnesses or suspects.”

Sen Sgt Magher said that it was easy for people to become lax while on holidays

and encouraged people to look, lock and leave.

“During school holidays, people get out of routine and that’s when things like laptops and mobiles are left in cars.” Police are also encouraging locals with information on a recent spate of graffiti and tagging around Ocean Grove to contact them.

Anyone with information can phone Bellarine Police on 5256 2698.

OCEAN Grove Quality Meats have snagged the title at the Regional Sausage Kings awards.

Owner Colin Smith said they won first place for one of the store’s more popular sausages.

“We took first prize for our lamb, sweet herb and mustard sausage… we sell a fair few of them,” he said.

Colin has owned the The Terrace butchers since late 2010 and said it was his

first time taking part in the competition.

“It’s the first time I personally have been involved, Matty

that works for me and makes them, entered a few years ago and has won a couple of titles,” he said. The butchers

are now vying for the state title and will compete against four other Victorian regional winners.

AFTER growing up in Colac, I moved to Melbourne in my late teens and settled in Ocean Grove 12 years ago. My husband, Leigh and I both attended Colac High School but didn’t really know each other.

My first memories of Ocean Grove was when my parents were looking for a holiday house and I loved it then and still love it now.

I remember the beach and the beautiful smell of the ocean. I still love waking up to that smell every day. Our two children, Madison and Tanner, attend local schools. My husband and I opened Beachside Blooms in 2007 and have loved it ever since. We work right next door to each other, so we have lunch together every day .

We love living here for many reasons. The schools, the clubs, the facilities for sport, the beach, but most of all, the people. With the both of us growing up in a small country town, we find that Ocean Grove is similar to our home town, but with the added advantage of the beach. It is fantastic to walk up the street and run into people I know whether it be

from school or through the business. I love the strong community atmosphere here and I am very grateful for the support from locals.

I have other passions besides flowers. I am on the committee for Bronte’s Ball and love being involved in such a wonderful charity, raising money to help fund a children’s oncology ward at

the Geelong Hospital. I am very passionate about helping kiddies and their families during the most difficult time in their lives.

If I was the mayor of Ocean Grove for a day, I would do two things. I would spend money on making The Terrace more appealing to the eye. I think we need more plants and colour. I

would also build a wedding chapel near Lookout Reserve. I am involved in about 120 weddings a year and we lack a place to hold a wedding with shelter with a view of the ocean, in case of bad weather. We have so many couples from Melbourne coming to our small town to get married on the beach. This brings a

lot of money into our town, for all businesses. We also desperately need a Medicare office on the peninsula.

I love this town and I think Ocean Grove is headed in the right direction. I love the tourist season, there is a real buzz around town. But we manage to maintain our little coastal community during this busy time.

A FLASH of inspiration is to thank for a committee change at the Ocean Grove Business Association according to its new president.

Incoming president Helen Butteriss is hoping to implement a program to rejuvenate Ocean Grove’s business hub and change the way Ocean Grovers shop.

As principal of Ocean Grove WHK office, Helen has been on the OGBA committee for the last seven years working with outgoing president Paul Drake.

Helen said she recently

attended a Geelong City Council seminar to listen to speaker Peter Kenyon from Bank Ideas talk about the Business Expansion and Retention program.

“This program is simply a community wide dialogue with owners and operators of local businesses about what helps and hinders their community activities, and what ideas they have to improve the local business environment,” she said.

“I left the seminar so inspired I decided to run for president of OGBA with

the intention of getting the program running in the Ocean Grove region.”

The association is already in talks with the City about some possible funding for the program which Helen said gave businesses from around Ocean Grove the opportunity to work together and support each other.

“It seems that businesses these days seem to operate as independently as silos, whereas if they all worked and supported each other the opportunity for success is far greater,” she said.

Helen said the new association committee would continue to support existing initiatives as well as introduce some new ones.

“We’re keen to keep on supporting the Ocean Grove Frenzy and other events we’ve done as well as growing and adding more,” she said.

The new committee’s first meeting will be held this Thursday and Helen said they were always eager for new members.

“I am sure the OGBA is going to be a major resource for all business owners and encourage new members to join us on this exciting journey.”

Ideas aplenty

HANDING OVER: Long serving and hardworking treasurer Sandi Ward and president Paul Drake have both stood down. Helen Butteriss is the new president.

MARGUERITE and Ron Dedman have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

The couple, who married at Flemmington-Kensington Presbyterian Church, in Newmarket, on grand final day 60 years ago, have been celebrating with family and friends in Ocean Grove.

Marguerite and Ron built their own home in Pacoe Vale between 1955-57 and was a cyclist with Kensington ACC and an official at the 1956 Olympic Games. He was a plumber, taught at technical schools, was a member of the Technical Teachers Association and was secretary and president of the Plumbing, Sheetmetal and Coppersmithing Instructors Association.

The couple lived in Pascoe Vale until they retired to the Grove in 1993. The couple have been involved in numerous local

organisations including the Wednesday walking group – of which Ron was a founding member – men’s Probus and the University of the Third Age. Ron also served as president of Ocean Grove Nature Reserve.

Proud parents of four children and seven grandchildren, Marguerite and Ron began their anniversary celebrations in Bendigo, Barwon Heads and back in Ocean Grove.

Asked about the key to the

success of their marriage, Ron said: “Loving each other. Just loving each other.”

The couple was amazed to receive a letter and photograph from the Queen and the Governor-General, as well as the Prime Minister.

LIFE OF LOVE: Marguerite and Ron Dedman have been married for 60 yeares.

THE Victoria State Emergency Service Bellarine Unit helped battle the wild weather that hit the Bellarine Peninsula last week.

Wind speeds hit 53.1 km per hour and 13mm of rain fell over Ocean Grove in 24 hours last Wednesday bringing the September rainfall to 54.2mm.

Bellarine SES Unit Controller Dion Henderson said the crew was called out four times over Wednesday and Thursday.

“We had a building down on Wednesday night in Clifton Springs… flood water came through the roof,” he said.

Three other call outs, including two to Ocean Grove, were to respond to fallen trees due to the high winds. Dion said thankfully the Bellarine Peninsula came off lightly compared to the rest of the state.

ONE of Ocean Grove’s well-known buildings is up for auction this month.

The KYO Yoga site at 81 The Parade will be auctioned by Hayden Real Estate on October 15 at 11am. Many Ocean Grovers would remember

the site as the home of the Blue Ocean Cantonese Restaurant for more than 20 years.

Tom Butters from Hayden Real Estate said the 812 square metre property had only been on the market a short time.

“We’ve only had it on the market for a week but there is already interest in it,” he said.

The property is zoned business 2 and has an expected price range of $900,000 to $990,000.

There is a planning permit

for a three-story building on the site that would include both commercial and retail space.

Michael Higgins from Michael Higgins Building Design said the artist impressions provided a possible opportunity for the

new owners to adopt.“The 3D drawings

represent the current planning permit for a three story building which the new owners can either run with or make amendments to,” he said.

OCEAN Grove Baptists Church has had a changing of the guard with Greg Illingworth taking over as minister at The Wave.

Greg has been pastoral minister for the church for the past 10 weeks filling the gap left by Mark Johnstone who has gone with his family to Malawi to continue work for Mphatso Children’s Foundation.

Greg, 54, lives with his wife, Jenny in Drysdale and has three children and two young grandchildren.

Originally working as a travel agent and owing his own business

in Drysdale, Greg completed his Bachelor of Theology while working at the Manifold Heights Churches of Christ.

After receiving a scholarship to participate in an exchange program to the USA in 1996, Greg then worked as a pastor of Portarlington’s Church by the Bay for 12 years.

Greg said he felt very strongly about coming to work for Ocean Grove Baptist Church and its 400 members.

“I very strongly felt called to the Bellarine Peninsuala, I have known this church since it started and I see it as a healthy

place that wants to make a positive difference in the community,” he said.

“We’ve got a vibrant group of people and I feel privileged to be their senior pastor.”

Greg said he had a great pride in the Bellarine and had no end in sight for his term at The Wave.

“No fixed term here but it would be nice to think I’d be here for a long period of time,” he said.

“We love this whole area, the Bellarine Peninsula, and we brag to people about this area; I think it’s the best place to live.”

The minister has retained his passion for

travel and said he had planned a trip to Malawi in 2012.

“I’ve travelled over to Africa many times but I’ll probably go to Malawi next year; it’s a major effort of this church in giving support over there,” he said.

OCEAN Grove Primary School students have played their part in preserving local beaches.About 50 grade 4 students took part in Enviro Day as part of the schools’ Community and Me program with representatives from Barwon Coast and Bellarine Catchment. As part of the day, the students released bridal creeper leaf hoppers into the Ocean Grove Main Beach sand dunes. The small insects feed on the pest plant bridal creeper which is a Weed of National Significance and helps to eradicate it without the need for chemical pesticides. The students have cared for the hoppers in their classrooms in readiness for releasing them into the dunes. Ocean Grove Primary Schools’ chaplain Rhonda Stubbings said caring for the leaf hoppers for the last month had helped the students feel like they were making a difference to their environment.“Releasing the leaf hoppers in the dunes helps the students to understand the

importance of the dunes, connect to the community and feel like they are making a difference,” she said. Bellarine Landcare Coastcare coordinator, Matt Crawley, said they also used the day to educate about the environmental significance of the sand dunes. “The students did not only assist Barwon Coast and the Bellarine Catchment Network tackle the control of this invasive weed, but learnt about the overall importance of the sand dunes and the many plants and animals that help keep the dunes healthy,” he said. For information on weed control phone 5257 4426.

TWO young talents have been awarded $5000 grants to help further their musical careers.

Year 12 Bellarine Secondary College student Catherine Sanzano was one of two recipients of the inaugural Queenscliff Music Festival perpetual scholarship for emerging artists.

Catherine’s VET music teacher, musician and festival board member Steve McEwan kept the news of the grant a secret from Catherine for almost a month before it was announced at Bellarine Secondary College’s school assembly.

Steve said the money was a great reward for Catherine after two years of hard work.

“I hope to see her develop a strong career in the music business, it’s not easy but she knows that,” he said. “It will give good grounding for the next step of her career.”

An overwhelmed Catherine said she was required to outline what she would do with the grant as part of her application.

“It will go towards my music career and boosting the start of gigging and touring, I’m just so grateful to Steve and the festival” she said.

Singer songwriter Izzy Losi received the other grant and plans to use the funds to release a CD of original songs and continue her regular performances around Geelong and the Surf Coast.

Festival boardmember Alison Sinclair said 11 young musicians applied for the grants but the board was especially impressed with Catherine and Izzy’s applications.

“Catherine’s application took it to the next level, it was different to others in that she wants to buy equipment that she previously has had to borrow and also works as a waitress to earn money to get into a career that she’s passionate about,” she said.

“Looking at them play today, we know we’ve made the right decision.”

This year’s festival is on November 25, 26 and 27.

SURFSIDE Primary School’s upcoming Fresh Food Fair will help showcase the school’s celebrated kitchen garden.

The fair will be held on Sunday, October 30, from 10am to 3pm at Surfside Primary School with entry a gold coin donation.

Surfside’s Kitchen Garden was created in 2006 and is part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.

Program coordinator Lindy Mills said the program gave the students valuable experiences not only in the organic garden but in the kitchen as well.

“The program gives the children hands-on experience not just in growing fruit and vegetables, but also in the kitchen where they learn valuable cooking skills,” she said.

The students’ work

this year has produced homemade jams, lemonade, chutneys and fresh produce that will be available for sale at the Fresh Food Fair.

Lindy said they were always

looking for volunteers to help out with the garden and in the kitchen.

“It’s a great opportunity to come and learn, parents and community members can

treat it like a cooking lesson,” she said.

If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer for the Surfside’s Kitchen Garden program, phone 5256 1411.

THE red wattle bird (also known as the barkingbird or gillbird) is one of the 37 species of honeyeaters found in Australia. Honeyeaters are characterised by having a ‘brush-tipped’ tongue, with which they take up nectar from flowers.

The species is found in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and some parts of Western Australia. They are commonly seen in Ocean Grove in gardens, and woodlands, especially around Kingston Park.

The red wattlebird feeds on nectar, which it obtains by probing flowers with its thin curved bill. red wattle birds also eat insects, and some eat more insects than nectar. They also feed on pollen, berries and the sap of plants as well as the sugary secretions from plant bugs.

The Red Wattlebird is a large (35cm), noisy honeyeater. The common name refers to the fleshy reddish ‘wattle’ on the side of the neck. The plumage is grey-brown on the body, with prominent white streaks and yellow on the belly. The face is pale and the tail is long with a white-tip. Young red wattlebirds are duller than the adult and have a brown, rather than reddish, eye.

The ‘wattle’ is also very small and pale in young birds.

Red wattle birds can be quite aggressive towards other birds to protect ‘their’ food-bearing plants from other honeyeater species.

The red wattlebird is among the second largest of the Australian honeyeaters behind the Tasmanian yellow wattlebird.

The nest is formed from sticks and leaves lined with bark and hair, between two and 16 meters above ground, usually in the forked branches of a tree or shrub, in which two or three, pale brown-spotted pink eggs are normally laid in the breeding season.

Also on Saturday October 1, all

the magpies in Ocean Grove were suddenly silenced by a blue and white striped feline creature that created mayhem at the MCG.

They will slowly recover over the summer, but the felines will be celebrating for some time to come.

EX-SERVICES formed a guard of honour for their comrade Donald Daniels at the Uniting Church.

Family, Probus and RSL friends gathered to say farewell to the Kokoda Track hero on a sunny spring afternoon in Ocean Grove.

Donald passed away on September 19 having battled illnesses for some 20 years.

Like his Kokoda collegues, Donald joined up at 17 and was quickly called to demonstrate his courage in action. More than 600 Australians were killed and

some 1680 wounded during perhaps the most significant battle fought by Australians in World War II.

In July 1942 on the Kokoda Track the 39th Battalion held off the advancing Japanese and then five weeks later when the Japanese again attacked the Australians the young soldiers delayed the Japanese advance for weeks.

The major memorial on the Track has four stone pillars which bear the words Courage, Endurance, Mateship, Sacrifice. These words defined the character of those young men.

At his service those gathered heard that Donald embodied all of these traits. He was also a no nonsense man, a man you could go to with any problem, someone who would assist you and

not ridicule. Then he would show you the proper way.

He was also a stickler for protocol.

Alternatively those gathered also heard of his humility, demonstrated by a story of his face to face meeting with an enemy soldier. Instead of shooting the man, Donald offered him a cigarette.

During the service former RSL president Bill Huggins paid tribute to his good friend and colleague Donald.

In civilian life Donald worked in interior design and soft furnishings.

He met his wife Peggy at The Dugout in Melbourne and they have three girls and two grandchildren.

The couple moved to Ocean Grove in the early 1990s.

DESPITE scoring first the Waves senior women were not able to defeat a determined and physical Geelong in the Women’s grand final in Corio last month.Geelong went on to record a 4-2 victory leaving the Waves girls lamenting what could have been.

Geelong were more

committed and first to the ball for most of the game whilst the Waves struggled to link up with high scoring forwards Lara Williams and Maddison Bennett, who were kept in check by the Geelong defenders.

On the other hand the Geelong speedy and skilful forwards troubled the Waves

defence throughout the game and created many scoring opportunities. However, some excellent goalkeeping from Rachel Sanzaro helping to keep the Waves within reach of Geelong.

Coach Adrian Hawken was disappointed with the result but very pleased and proud of his team’s performance throughout

the season in winning the League Championship. “Grand Finals are all about who plays the best on the day. Our girls were a little flat today and Geelong capitalised on this. They put us under a lot of attacking pressure. We have a young squad and they will learn a lot from today,” said Adrian.

Congratulations to

Williams who was rewarded for her outstanding season by winning both the Golden Boot and League Best and Fairest awards.

The Waves have had a fantastic season with a very young group and are looking forward already to the arrival of the 2012 season.

Results September 17-18FANTASTIC weather greeted players and supporters for the weekend finals fixtures. The U13 Girls and U15 Boys playing in their respective Grand Finals, and the Senior Men and Women playing in cut throat semi-finals at Shell Road. For a small, relatively young club this has been an exceptional season. Unfortunately the U13 Girls were unable to bring the trophy back to Ocean Grove but the U15 Boys were triumphant with a strong 4-0 victory over Lara. The winning team is pictured above. The senior women moved into

the grand final with a convincing 6-2 win in their semi-final over a spirited Barwon. Let’s hope the girls can add the premiership to their League title. The Div 2 Men’s semi was a lot tighter with the teams locked at 1-1 after the 90 minutes. Extra time saw the Waves take the lead only for Surfcoast to equalise in the last 30 seconds of the match. 2-2 after extra time and into the penalty shootout. The Waves maintained their composure scoring all 5 penalties with Surfcoast missing one to give the Waves the grand final berth with a 5-4 shootout win.Grand finals for the Men and

Women are held next week end. It would be great for as many Waves supporters and Ocean Grove locals getting to the games to support the teams. Senior Semi-Final Results:Sen Men: Surfside 2 Vs Surfcoast 2.After extra time. The Waves holding their nerve to win 5-4 in the penalty shootout to move into next week’s grand final. Goals scorers: Nic Hargraves (pen) and Steffan Hargraves.Sen Women: Surfside 6 Vs Barwon 2. The Waves proved that they were a class unit with a fantastic performance under immense pressure in the race for the title. The Waves attacking

strike power proving too much for a spirited Barwon team. Good luck in the grand final girls.Junior Grand Final ResultsU/15 Boys: Surfside 4 Vs Lara 0. Another great performance by the boys who have been the class team of the competition all season. Some great finishing in front of goal and strong defence secured the premiership to add to the league title. Goal scorer Jacob Nicholson 3, Ben Zebic 1. The Waves also took out other honours with Ben Zebic awarded the league best & fairest and Isaiah Mujica best in the grand final.

Juniors triumph in finals

MINOR Premiership winners Surfside Waves won their first Grand Final in style at Corio’s Hume Reserve.

It was Corio who started the stronger, pressing for an early goal, with the Waves counter attacking when they could with the pace of Alex Monroe and Jake Armstrong playing wide on the wings.

Despite the early pressure Corio had created few real goal scoring opportunities, until 20 minutes in, when a defensive scramble saw the ball ricochet around the Waves penalty box before being lashed home from close range by a grateful Corio striker to give them a 1-0 lead.

This seemed to be the catalyst for the Waves to step up their game and the midfield partnership of Gabe McClellend and “Irish dance champion” Stan Nangle began to gain the upper hand in the centre of the park, feeding some good passes to the Waves front line. Then on 35 minutes captain Troy McClellend showed great vision with an arrowed pass

that put Staffan Hargreaves into space and running in on goal, with the keeper coming out and defenders closing in the Waves attacker took the ball wide before firing home from a difficult angle to level the scoring at 1-1.

For the rest of the first half the Waves continued to press, but the scores remained locked at 1-1 at the half time interval.

For the second half the Waves coach Chris Puttyfoot showed his tactical nous changing from

the 4-5-1 to a more attack minded 4-4-2 formation. And the extra man up front certainly made a difference with the Waves looking much more dangerous coming forwards, swinging in crosses and corners as they pressed for that winning goal

Corio were creating little but defending well and it wasn’t until 15 minutes from time that the Waves finally got their deserved breakthrough. A sublimely weighted through ball by Andy

Black sent the league’s leading goal scorer Nick Hargreaves clean through on goal; with poise and composure the veteran bided his time before slotting the ball accurately passed the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

Corio tried to rally but the Waves defence were in no mood to concede another goal with Alex Armstrong and “Highlander” Colin Anderson making several timely challenges, combined with the ever safe hands of Adrian Hawken in the Waves goal. And as the game opened up in the final minutes the “crafty German” Kai Thieme almost embarrassed the Corio goalkeeper with a long range effort that caught the keeper completely off guard and almost found its way into the net.

But at the final whistle it remained 2-1, giving Surfside Waves men their first premiership title in six years of trying - for some of the more seasoned campaigners it was probably now or never !

SWEET VICTORY: Waves men celebrate their Grand Final win.

THE under 16 Storm girls played in the VJBL grand final against Eltham 3 on Saturday, September 17, at Broadmeadows. The girls all played a brilliant game and came out premiers.

Storm played Eltham in the semi finals and lost to it by one point. This time the girls came out to prove a point, which was that they deserved to be in the grand final.

Every single player stepped

up during the game and it was the best game that they had all played. Players were doing things they had been working on all season but hadn’t done throughout the season.

The team work was awesome and the girls’ defence was tough. They played a full court press from the start of the game and at times Eltham struggled to get the ball over half court.

The Storm offence was just as good and there were some beautiful drives to the basket.

The girls have had a great season, finishing runner up in the Country Championships and finishing third at the Ballarat tournament.

The girls have trained hard and tried hard all season and it paid off in the grand final.

Allison Marsh was the most valuable player in grand final.

BELLARINE Storm Basketball under 12 boys won back-to-back titles with their win against Werribee in the VJBL 2011 Region One North grand final on Saturday, September 17.

After winning the VJBL 2010 Metro One grand final, a new group of under 12 boys took to the court for the 2011 season with only one of them having played competition VJBL basketball. Three of the boys who played this season had seen their older brothers win the 2010 title last year.

In 2011 Storm fielded eight teams ranging in age from under 12 boys and girls to under 20 girls. Five of those

teams played in the finals and two came away with premierships (under 12 boys and under 16 girls). After a slow and nervous start to the game the boys settled to lead narrowly at half time 20 - 19. In the second half the boys stepped up a gear and really hit their straps.

They out-ran, out- defended and out-scored Werribee 24 - 11 to go on to win the grand final 44 - 30. Hamish Goodier was the grand final most valuable player.Scorers: Hamish Goodier18, Baxter Nielson 12, Vincent Whelan 8, Lachlan Hart 2, Bryce Newton 2 and Justin Finley 2.

[email protected] defender Bernie Lynch was crowned the club’s best and fairest winner at the Ocean Grove Football and Netball senior presentation night awards ceremony last month.

Lynch who turned 29 this month, finished on 128 votes, while midfielder Ben Ricardo came second polling 86 votes ahead of new recruit Cade Wellington who collected 70 votes.

Lynch said it was a proud achievement to win his first senior first best and fairest award at the Grubbers.

“It is a massive honour to win an Ocean Grove best and fairest, probably one of the proudest and most successful clubs going around,” Lynch told the Voice.

“To see the names on the best and fairest honour board, yes it is a massive honour to follow in their footsteps.”

Lynch said it was also a thrill to win the coveted award that Grubber skipper James Dalton has won for the past five seasons.

Dalton, a five-time Best and Fairest

winner at Ocean Grove between 2006-10 finished in fourth position polling 68 votes.

“I made sure I told James Dalton,” Bernie said.

“Jimmy is a great guy, to win a medal that he has won for the last five years, it is massive honour.

“I had some pretty good years at North Shore, I had some good games last year I played in a different position and I suppose I can’t take all the credit for it with all the guys down back (including) with Kane Reardon, Sam Rankin and Sam Fairway and those type of guys – it was team effort down back.”

MEANWHILE in the Reserves Shaun Britt won best and fairest honours with 60 votes, to win ahead of Matthew Gorski (47) and Andrew Lowson (43).

In the Under 18s Mitchell Evans won the top honour on 86 votes, to finish ahead of youngster Jack Rawlings on 79 votes while Andy Higgins collected 53 votes.

In the Under 18s division 2 Joel Winberg won the top award on 110 votes.

OCEAN GROVE GrubbersLast season: 3rd placeArrivals: Mitch Hodgson (St Albans Breakwater) Departures: None

The big improvers from last season finished in the top four under new coach Lucas Cameron. Dean Gills who made 362 runs at 32.91 last season for the Grubbers is expected to be a dominant force with the bat again.

Bowler Shaun Braniff will be a massive key after being the BPCA’s leading wicket taker in 2010/11 taking 33 wickets at 8.39.

Mitch Hodgson is a handy acquisition as a wicket-keeper/batsman arriving from St Albans Breakwater.

A good start like last season will help the Grubbers figure highly at season’s end. The Grubbers need to claim wins against big scalps Barwon Heads and Drysdale if they want to go all the way in 2011/12.

Ocean Grove coach Lucas Cameron said: “As for where we look to improve, it starts

at the top with our assistant coach Mick Gill and myself.

“Have had terrible years but come good in the finals and need to replicate that form from round one. We will also be expecting big years from Dave Bate, Shaun Branniff and Mitch Hodgson.

“There will be a few new faces from our juniors being given the opportunity to cement their spot whilst we are getting our best team together, post Christmas.”

COLLENDINACobrasLast season: 10th placeArrivals: Tony Brown (Melbourne Cricket Club), Kris Hinck (Strathdale Maristians), Will Handley (returns), Dan Early (returns) Departures: Michael Fabris (Glenroy), Kurtley Balshaw (South Barwon)

Last season was one to forget for the Cobras after winning their inaugural A-Grade premiership in 2009/10.

Collendina rarely had its best side on the park at the one time last season. New

captain Jye Hearps will bolster the Cobras bowling stocks after returning late last season after an overseas working stint. Tony Brown will be a valuable addition to the batting line-up, along with the Handley brothers who will provide stability in the middle order when they are available and also help the bowling stocks.

The club has indicated Geelong footballer Jimmy Bartel will also play a few games this season. Luke

Veitenheimer is expected to play more of an active role with the ball after the departure of Michael Fabris. Expect an improved effort from Collendina who will be more desperate to play finals in 2011/12.

Collendina Cobras co-coach Richie Peters said: “We have wiped off last season however we can’t take our success for granted from the previous season.

“We hope to have a core of about eight players playing

every week for the Cobras in the A-Grade. The likes of Tony Brown, Jimmy Bartel and Luke Veitenheimer won’t be available to play every game due to work and family commitments.

“We did take the foot off the pedal last season, this season we need more commitment from our core group of players.

“We are keen to get back into new season. All the boys are mates at the club which is important.”

season unfoldWALLINGTONWallabiesLast season: 4th placeArrivals: Darcy Campbell (Newcomb & District), Rhys Clink (Bannockburn) Departures: Christian O’Brien (Western Australia), Calvin O’Brien (Corio), Daniel Harrison (Newcomb Bulls)

While Wallington has lost some key batsman including the O’Brien brothers, the Wallabies have added some new talent including Rhys Clink, a front line bowler and handy lower order batsman, and Darcy Campbell.

The Wallabies are a definite finals contender for the 2011/12 season, whether they can push the BPCA’s elite A-Grade teams will depend on their ability to bat for long periods and post competitive scores and show continued consistency with the ball and in the field.

Wallington coach Darren Cameron said: “We have lost a few players including the O’Brien brothers but we have also gained a few handy players.

“Our aim would be to make the top four and improve on last season. We

had a taste of making finals last season, including making the preliminary finals.

“We definitely need to improve our batting with posting bigger scores.”

BARWON HEADSSeagullsLast season: 1st place Arrivals: Adam Shawcross (St Joseph’s), Andrew Eslick (Manifold Heights), Louie Hyland (Murgheboluc) Lachlan Campbell (Murgheboluc)Departures: Chris Welsford (retired)

Arguably the side to beat in 2011/12 after winning the A-Grade premiership in 2010/11.

Last season’s league BPCA leading runscorer Jason Mallet will be out to continue his purple patch vein of form after an impressive season with the bat in 2010/11. Mallet scored 545 runs at 60.56 including one century. The club has enhanced their depth with the additions of Shawcross and Eslick.

Barwon Heads coach Jason Mallet said: “Our numbers at pre-season training have been really good. We haven’t tried too hard to attract

players, we have had some players that have come to us.

“Obviously we have had success here in recent years, so that helps.”
