A STREET of Ocean Grove residents - and the developer - have been left in limbo after the State Government left the town minus a height limit on new homes.

Residents of Highview Court were all prepared for the City of Greater Geelong to consider their objections to a 9m property in their street at a hearing last week.

A 7.5m height control has been in place for the past 20 years and they anticipated this would have assisted their case.

However, on Wednesday the City of Greater Geelong sent out a letter informing them that the hearing was cancelled - becuase the height rule - a DDO or Design Development Overlay - had expired.

The council letter said: “Therefore, the proposed dwelling does not require planning approval.”

Although the rule expired on June 30 the City says it has been urging the state government to extend it, if only to allow community consultation.

The City has been told that the Government will be back in touch with them this week, with an answer either way.

Peter Bettess, General manager Ecoonomic Development, Planning and Tourism said the Mayor John Mitchell had sent a letter to the Victorian Planning Minister on May 6 explaining that the height control was accepted and supported by thc community.

FOUR months after Parks Victoria warned divers about visiting the ex-HMAS Canberra dive site, the scuttled ship is now closed.

In a temporary measure by Parks Victoria, the ex-HMAS Canberra has been closed as a dive site due to safety concerns.

In a story first released by the Ocean Grove Voice on February 23, 2011, it was reported Parks

Victoria had released a statement warning divers about the danger of visiting the site due to the helicopter hanger coming apart from the main structure.

An updated statement released by Parks Victoria on its website dated July 4, 2011, said that from a recent assessment of the Canberra there was “significant movement of heavy metal plates, leaving sharp edges and

obstruction of access points”.“A further structural

assessment has confirmed the helicopter hanger on the port side of the ship has now come loose requiring a temporary closure of access to the site in the interest of public safety.”

Parks Victoria’s manger of marine operations Vin Wright said the site was expected to break up over time.

The ex-HMAS Canberra was scuttled as a wreck and the progressive breakup of the vessel was expected,” he said.

He said Parks Victoria would be working with tour operators to minimise the impact on businesses and further assessment was needed before it could reopen the site to divers.

Grove cars are targetsCARS in Ocean Grove are prime targets for break-ins according to Geelong criminal circles. Sergeant John Dunstan from the Bellarine Police said they arrested two youths on Monday June 27 after a weekend operation to tackle the June spike in car beak-ins. The youths aged 16 and 17, who are not from Ocean Grove, were caught breaking into unlocked cars in Kingston Estate.“We’ve been inundated with reports of break-ins in that area and all of them have been unlocked with valuables in the car,” Sergeant Dunstan said. Sergeant Dunstan said after their arrest, the youths informed police that Ocean Grove is known as an easy target for car thefts.“Word is filtering out through Geelong crime circles that Ocean Grove is a happy hunting ground because we don’t lock our cars,” he said. “We need to get out to the community that Ocean Grove is being targeted, people need to lock their cars even in their driveway at home.”

Residents of Highview are already distressed that the proposed height on the new home at number 10 will be out of keeping with all the other properties and a neighbourly order that has existed in the streets 15 year existence.

Resident Ashley Finch said he was disappointed that the new neighbour wished to exceed the

height but was doubly shocked to get a letter saying there was nothing stopping the development.

“I was kind of dumbfounded.

“You ask the council today and they can’t give you an answer. I said ‘what’s the process (now)’. They said ‘there’s no process’.

“I said ‘can he start building tomorrow?’ He said ‘yes’. So we rang the minister’s office. He

virtually said we can’t give you an answer. It seems like the government has been sitting on its hands for six months.

“Where does it leave us all?”

The council has also cautioned the developer

and potential developers to be ‘prudent’ because they may still require consent if the rule is reapplied.

Other height rules governing coastal prop-erties and building regulations still apply.

POLICE and Wallington CFA attended a single vehicle collision with a street light pole on the Bellarine Highway on Thursday. No one was hurt in the smash in wet conditions.

A POST-mortem will be held after a baby died at an Ocean Grove home on Sunday. Police were called to the Orton Street home just after 1pm and were unable to conclude the cause of death.

OCEAN Grove’s first indoor market has been hailed a success.

The Indoor Market at the Surfside Centre proved a fantastic success with more than 60 stallholders displaying their wares and nearly 1100 patrons passing through the doors.

Gold coin donations at the entrance to the first Ocean Grove Rotary Club indoor market raised more than $1,100 towards its $40,000 target to upgrade two

local ambulance defibrillators. The next Ocean Grove indoor

market will be on Sunday August 7 and Sunday September 4 from 9.30am to 2pm where the proceeds of the gold coin donation will further contribute to the Ocean Grove Ambulance project.

JON Mamonski has been recognised with a knighthood from the ancient but still thriving, Order of St John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller.The Order of St John is the world’s oldest Christian charity and order of chivalry.There are about 120 knights and dames of the Order in Victoria.The award was made in recognition of Jon’s tireless efforts in the community. Jon was the founding chair and continues as a director of the Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, at Christmas Jon directs the Ocean Grove Carols in the Park as well as directing shows for the Queenscliffe Lighthouse Theatre Group and he is also Deputy Chairman of Bravehearts Victoria, a director on the Geelong Hospital Gala Day board and a director of the Committee for the Bellarine.Jon recently completed a Masters degree at Deakin and the two-year “Leaders for Geelong” program, run by the Committee for Geelong. Jon also develops and manages numerous Web sites for local community groups and often accepts invitations to act as master of ceremonies across the region. Jon commented that Ocean Grove was very fortunate to have a strong network of local volunteers.

THE Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre has received a generous grant to help continue its valuable services to local youth.

The Geelong Community Foundation presented a cheque for $10,000 to the centre’s co-ordinator, Nicki Dunne, at the Annual Grants Reception.

Nicki said the money would go towards supporting the youth drop-in program and giving young people more experiences and opportunities.

“It means we can hold excursions every fortnight and every other week we can have an activity or workshop,” she said.

Drop-in has been running every Friday night at the Neighbourhood Centre for 10 years and currently has more than 120 members.

The Geelong Community Foundation donates grants every year to community based programs in the region covering local needs from education and training to health, youth and the arts.

THE Uniting Church’s Dove Op Shop is going strong four months after opening to Ocean Grove bargain hunters.

Jean Konings is not only secretary of the Dove committee but is one of 55 volunteers.

Volunteers work about two shifts a week and Jean said they always had fun.

“Everyone who works there enjoys it there, the atmosphere is bright and

light and nice and warm in winter,” she said.

Jean said they were really pleased with the support from the community in donations, especially during the Winter Woollies Drive.

“We did a letterbox drop asking people to donate just one piece of winter clothing and the response we received from that has been fantastic,” she said. Profits from the shop go into local and international projects.

THE Bellarine unit of the Victorian State Emergency Service (VICSES) is on the lookout for new members.

Covering the entire Bellarine Peninsula from Leopold to St Leonards, the unit has attended more than 135 call outs since the start of 2011 but needs extra help from the local community.

Bellarine unit controller Dion Henderson said the unit had 28 volunteers but would like to increase the membership, especially for call outs during the day.

“We are always on the lookout for more members, especially people who are available for day time response,” he said.

Long-time Ocean Grove

member and previous unit controller Pat Coulton said many members worked full time and people were needed for day-time response.

“We need people of all trades and skills to help out with everything from answering the phones to going out on the chainsaw, but essentially you need to be fit and active” he said.

SES members train every second Thursday night and have the opportunity to participate in a range of different training courses including first aid, OH&S and road crash rescue.

Pat said younger members have had the chance to use their training to further their careers into other emergency

services.“In the last eighteen

months we’ve had one to the Victorian Police, one go to the federal police, and two to the ambos,” he said.

Pat and Dion both said they joined the SES to give back to the community.

“It was about community service at the end of the day, I was a Rotarian for years but I’m more of a hands on person and getting out on the chainsaw and the tools

appealed more to me than the admin side of things,” Pat said.

“I was about giving back to the community too, I own two businesses of my own so I see what can happen with nature,” said Dion.

“It all comes down to giving back to the community, you can’t keep taking, you’ve got to give sometimes too.”

I was honoured to be invited to attend the first meeting of the new Bellarine Leo’s Club meeting held in Drysdale recently.

It was fantastic to see such an enthusiastic group of young locals joining together to establish the club. Congratulations to all the students from Bellarine Secondary College who put their hands up to be involved.

Leo Clubs, sponsored by local Lions Clubs are an official activity of Lions Clubs International. The Leo Club objective is to “provide the youth of the world an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively as responsible members of the local, national and international community”.

The vaccine is offered to parents of newborns which helps to create a cocoon of protection for babies.

The vaccine can be given to the mother soon after the birth of the baby and her partner can receive the vaccine at any time during

the pregnancy. Vaccinations will be available through maternity hospitals and general practitioners.

I HAVE lived in Ocean Grove for six-and-a-half years, shifting just before Christmas in 2004.

I was born in Bendigo and lived in Strathdale, a suburb of Bendigo and I went to Quarry Hill Primary School for grades prep and one. At the end of my school year in grade one, we shifted to Ocean Grove, where I attended Ocean Grove Primary School at the beginning of 2005. At the beginning of 2010, I began my secondary education and began my year seven year at St Ignatius. I am in year eight right now.

My first memories of Ocean Grove are when we came as a family a few times, and would house sit for a family friend, and have a holiday. On our last holiday here, I remember looking at a few houses, so we could buy one to live here, which we obviously did.

I think Ocean Grove is heading in the right direction, getting bigger doesn’t worry me, but I do hope there will be appropriate facilities to help

meet the needs of all the people in the area. The big issues that Ocean Grove will have to deal with in the coming years are population increasing, better bus service to get around, enough shops and schools. Ocean Grove’s Terrace Shopping Centre will be a bit different, becoming more modern with not as much a small town feel. Ocean Grove needs more facilities for young people like my age, so they have more things to do with their friends on holidays and weekends. My favourite local shop is Piping Hot Chicken Shop, as I like to go there with my mates, but I also like the surf shops. If I had a shop or business, I would open a music shop and sell instruments and music.

The Ocean Grove Voice is a great community paper and I know a lot of people like reading it. I can’t think of anything to improve it, but maybe it would be fun for younger kids to have a page for them.

I play cricket for Ocean Grove Junior Cricket Club, and am a member of the Ocean Grove Golf Club.

I started off playing under 11 cricket at the end of grade five in 2008, where I have gone up each year into the right age group, and now am going into my second year of under 15. We went to the cricket club I am at, as we lived close to the ground, which was convenient. I have been going to a junior golf group at the golf course, on and off since we shifted here.

The best thing about Ocean Grove is the beaches, clean, and great for surfing and other activities. My passions away from school are guitar, golf, computer, cricket, soccer, surfing, and hanging with my mates. I have trouble fitting in all my interests, but I do manage to make time to chill with my friends.

If I was the mayor of Ocean Grove, the first thing I would do is get a Macca’s store in Ocean Grove, even though I know a lot of people wouldn’t be happy!

If I wasn’t in Ocean Grove, I would like to be living in Queensland, so I could go to the theme parks all the time, seeing I’ve just been there on holidays and couldn’t go on any rides due to my arm in plaster. This happened on my birthday, on my new skateboard, the night before I left for holidays.

My favourite part of Ocean Grove is probably the main street and the park so I can chill with my mates and look around in the shops.

dive tour operators, stakeholders and other interested parties throughout the site’s closure and will explore all options for getting divers back on the dive site,” he said.

“We need to ensure the site is monitored and appropriate action is taken in the interests of public safety, we will know the extent of these actions in coming weeks.”

Oz Dive Boat Charters owner Tom Wende said the closure would affect all dive charters on the coast.

“It’s going to affect everyone’s business, he said.

Tom said he visited the wreck just one week ago and said the deterioration on the port side was apparent.

“The whole side is blown out where the hanger is,” he said.

Oz Dive Boat Charters visits other wrecks off the Victoria coast that date back to 100 years old and Tom said he was disappointed that the Canberra has come apart so soon after it was scuttled.

“It’s a pity that it hasn’t lasted more than two years,” he said.

ABOUT 100 kids, including many from Ocean Grove, got the chance to take part in an exciting footy camp across the bridge at Barwon Heads last week. The camp featured Cats player Brad Ottens as well as Falcons and local footy players coaching the youngsters through kicking, running and teamwork skills.

Ocean Grove & Barwon Heads Lions Club has re-established a “Leo” club at the Bellarine Secondary School. Friday June 17th saw the “Charter” of this club and 11 of 15 students were inducted as some students were unavailable due to other school commitments. Sixty-three people attended the the chartering of the club including District Governor Max Oberlander and wife Chris, along with Cabinet Secretary Terry Uniacke all travelling from Portland. Zone Chairman Will Minett,

Region Chairman Michael Harris, Leos Chairman John McNamara from Bannockburn, and other Lion members, as well as Principal Colin Sing, teacher/co-ordinator Ms Senem Shamsili and parents.The club’ s President is Victoria Flegg, the Vice President is Matthew Heard, the Secretary is Jordan Goodwin and the Treasurer is April HueberLion Co-ordinator Lion Brenda Walter, Lions Phil Scambler, John Claringbold and Ian Walter are advisors.

OCEAN Grove will host the first Relay for Life event on the Bellarine Peninsula.

The Ocean Grove Harriers running group will be one of many local teams who will run the 24-hour relay to help raise money for Cancer Council Australia.

The Australia-wide event will be held on November 12 and 13 at Collendina Reserve’s football ground. Ocean Grovers will be part of over 175,000 participants that take part in the relay every year.

The Ocean Grove Harriers B Team will be headed by the Harriers’ Grand Master Phil Emery who said the event would have a great atmosphere.

“The event will have a

festival feel about it with tents, food, lighting, a stage with lots of entertainment, a candle light remembrance event and of course the 24 hr relay,” he said.

“There are so many causes out there to support but there’s no question of the merit of this one.”

The Ocean Grove Harriers have been running around Ocean Grove on Saturday mornings since the group began in 1985 and currently has about 40 members.

“The focus is not on being too serious, it’s an inclusive group and anyone of any age or ability can join and they will find someone at their level,” Phil said.

Harrier’s member Ann Sing said they were hoping to get

as many Harriers, friends and family as possible to join their Relay for Life team.

“About 20 would be great but we hope to get 100 per cent attendance out of the Harriers,” she said.

The team has an official fundraising target of $1000 however Phil said they are hoping to raise a lot more.

“I think we can raise well over $1000, we don’t have a target yet but you never know, we might surprise ourselves,” he said.

NEARLY 30 youngsters have been enjoying a packed program of holiday events at the Neighbourhood Centre. The primary school kids get to visit the movies, the Kids Play circus, Disney on Ice, bowling and a visit from the Roaming Reptiles - as well as plenty of indoor games and art and craft in the warm on the winters day. The youngsters are at the centre from 8am to 6pm and benefit from the attendance of qualified leaders, many of who are trainee teachers and have an excellent understanding of kids overall needs.

OUR Lady Star of the Sea pupils have been learning about animals and their habitats.

Some of the activities they have done included worm worlds, giant worms, bird drawings, worm races, paintings of under the sea and on land.

They have been on many excursions, such as the bushlands of Kingston Park, a pond and they also visited the Lobster Pot in Barwon Heads and have learned a lot of information about animals and how to care for them. They also went on a beach walk and saw soldier crabs in the rock pools.

The pupils learned about different ways that they can

protect their local habitats such as not littering, not stepping on or ruining animals habitats by walking carefully when in them and making sure that if you pick up an animal you put it back where you found it. The other messages were to stay off the sand dunes and don’t cut down trees. .

All the preps and year one/two’s at Star of the Sea decided to have a casual clothes day to raise money to help support the Lobster Pot and their fantastic program, so that they can keep looking after animals. Pupils made stickers promoting ways people can protect animals, had a paper pick-up and all donated a gold coin. Pupils at Kingston Park.

SURFSIDE Primary School’s junior classes are benefitting from a unique teaching program, the only one of its kind offered on the Bellarine Peninsula, writes Carly Helweg.

Grades prep to two participate in Investigation Time, a learning approach that focuses on the development of the whole child, their emotional, social, cognitive, language and physical

development.The program, based on the

Walker Learning Approach, is designed to place the child at the centre of the curriculum and uses their interests as a basis for learning.

Accredited teacher Sally McLaren said teachers provide experiences that promote creativity, imagination, sensory exploration and development of

social skills.“Currently, some prep students

are operating a bead shop; they have designed and created their merchandise, made price tags with money amounts, displayed their stock, promoted their store via written advertisements and exchanged money for goods sold,” she said.

“Investigations are (then) used as a springboard for learning

during the literacy and numeracy blocks, ensuring that learning is authentic and engaging.”

Prep teacher Laura Myers said the program has been instrumental in building her student’s numeracy and literacy levels.

“You look around and every single child is engaged because it’s with a project they are interested in,” she said.

OCEAN Grovers have cleaned out their wardrobes to help those less fortunate.

Ocean Grove Primary School grade four students collected over 800 pairs of shoes to donate to the In Your Shoes initiative run by Melbourne University.

The program helps to distribute the shoes to local and international organisations who then donate them to needy families.

School chaplain Rhonda Stubbings said they were blown away with the number of shoes donated.

“I’ve really been amazed at how the kids have grasped this (idea), we lost count of the shoes after 800 pairs,” she said. “The kids are so rapt and we’re so proud of them.”

OCEAN Grove’s house prices are holding fi rm and sales are steady despite large percentage reversals in other towns

in the region. The reason, according to Property Victoria fi gures, is that home owners in many regional coastal areas are hanging onto their seaside properties while comparatively affordable towns like the Grove are still proving the biggest draw card for seachangers. The 4th quarter median house price in

Ocean Grove rose from 366,500 in 2007 to 375,000 in 2008 – equaling a 2.3 per cent increase.

That compares to a minus 4.3 per cent fall in Jan Juc and an 18 per cent fall in Barwon Heads – from $500,000 in 2007 to $410,000. However, according to local agents the fi gure is somewhat distorted by the number of house sales in Ocean Grove (111 in 2007 and 52 in 2008) and Barwon Heads (37 and 20) and Ocean Grove’s larger number of $300-400,00 bracket homes which remains the strongest market. Owners with million dollar properties are not selling.

ARE you a woman interested in making a difference to your community? Would you like to make new friends? Then you are invited to help create Ocean Grove’s first VIEW club.

VIEW or Voice, Interests and Education of Women, gives members the opportunity to present, debate and vote on issues of national importance to women while making new friends.

An interest meeting will be held on Wednesday July 20 at Club Grove with all Ocean Grove women encouraged to attend.

VIEW is more than 50 years old and has helped develop local and national initiatives including school traffic safety measures, ovarian cancer awareness

and research and funding for breast prostheses.

As a part of The Smith Family organisation, VIEW members are also able to help local disadvantaged children further their education through fundraising.

Laurel Greenhalgh, member of the development team for VIEW Ocean Grove, said members were

big believers in education as a way of breaking the cycle of poverty for disadvantaged Australian children.

“VIEW women believe in the power of education to change young lives,” she said.

Laurel said they needed about 25 women to start VIEW Ocean Grove which will become the fourth club in the Geelong region.

“We want to gather more women wanting to be part of a women’s network and interested in contributing to their community,” she said.

“We welcome women from all creeds and races who are concerned about their community and wish to network with other women from their hometown.”

The members of the VIEW

development team will be on hand at the meeting to answer any questions and Mara Brandish and Jacqui Blencoe from The Smith Family Norlane will present as guest speakers.

ANAHATA is a unique new Café just opened last Friday in Ocean Grove at shop 2/96 The Parade.

Harrish Sood’s dream of opening up a café has come true as he is

passionate about cooking quality north Indian food for his friends and family for many years.

Harrish has a Chef and assistant cook that specialises in fine Indian

cooking join him in the café.

Harrish’s story in how he came to open up Anahata Café is an interesting one. Born into a family of doctors and his mothers father was a wholesaler of herbs and spices in Peshawar, which is now part of Pakistan since the division between Pakistan and India back in 1947. During the partition his mother’s family moved to the Indian part of Punjab in 1947 to Jallandhar. Punjab is a state in the north of India that is world wide known for producing some of the world’s best quality rice, spices and organic cottons and food products.

Living and eating healthy has always been an important part of Harrish’s life with his Grand Mother and mother using local herbs and spices not only in cooking but applied externally as natural remedies to prevent sickness. For instance Indian spice turmeric added to mustard oil and applied on the skin helps

to relieve muscle strains and sprains. Added to cooking turmeric has many health benefits such as a natural immune booster and antiseptic.

Being the eldest in the family of six children, Harrish helped in the family kitchen as a young boy and learned first hand how to use herbs and spices in cooking, and what ingredients to use based on the seasons to keep naturally healthy. This is part of an ancient art of healing in India called Ayurveda which has existed for over 5,000 years in India and has branched out all over the world today.

Harrish fondly recalls as a young boy being hitched up onto the family’s cottage roof by his father to retrieve the pumpkins and cucumber that were growing on the roof top for the families evening dinner. They always grew their own organic food and had fresh milk every day from his Uncle’s local dairy.

When Harrish was around four years old his Uncle used to come and

wake him up at 4.30am to come and milk the buffaloes, and get the first squirt of the warm milk in his mouth!

It was in 2002 on a business trip from India to Australia, as an Indian exporter of rugs, carpets, furnishing and other products that he decided to settle here.

Jenny, Harrish’s partner of six years shares an interest in Indian Culture and loves eating Indian food too and both have a common interest in food for health. Jenny and friends have often commented on the

difference between Harrish’s cooking and eating out at a commercial restaurant and encouraged him to open up a café.

Back in March this year Harrish was in Ocean Grove on a regular visit to his one of his buyers, Judith who owns the iconic Tranquillity Base, when she told Harrish about a shop vacant in the Parade. With Judith’s encouragement Harrish pursued the idea of the café.

The same shop where Anahata Café is located now has seen a few lives

before which included a very well known Indian Café called Ganesh (the name of the Lord for prosperity) which used to do a roaring trade at the time and it was hard to get a seat unless you booked.

Harrish and Jenny had talked about wanting to live close to the sea and it seems Ocean Grove was the prefect choice to start a cafe.In the Future Harrish has plans to run small group cooking classes so that local people can experience first hand about healthy authentic eastern cooking.

Hotel to host MS fundraiser

Bree-arne Chamley is a young woman from The Bellarine Peninsula who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the very young age of 19.Over the past five or so years she has, through her music and network of friends, worked very hard on raising awareness and money for research of this disease.On Friday the 19th of August the Ocean Grove Hotel will stage a fundraising event to raise funds specifically for those suffering from this disease who need assistance to make

their life more comfortable. Bookgrove presents internationally reknown children’s author Wendy Orr.

Orr is best known for Nim’s Island and will read from her new books The Princess and the Panther and Raven’s Mountain.

Orr will be in store on Thursday, July 14 at 11am.

Orr is a Canadian-born Australian

writer born in Edmonton, Alberta. She is best known as the author

of Nim’s Island, which was made into a film in 2008 starring Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler.

According to Orr’s website, the author was inspired to write the book after seeing a tiny little island when she was nine years old and thinking that she’d like to live on it.

Orr lives on the land on the Mornington Peninsula with husband Tom and their pet dog.

THIS week’s nature report concerns black-faced cuckoo-shrikes.

This pair of black-faced cuckoo-shrikes (pictured) was spotted in Wallington, near the Elkhorn.

Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes have a black face and throat, blue-grey back, wings and tail, white underparts and a slightly hooked bill. Cuckoo-shrikes are neither cuckoos nor shrikes, but are so called because their feathers have similar patterns to those of cuckoos and their beak shape resembles that of shrikes. They are about 33cm in length. Young birds resemble the adults, except the black facial mask is reduced to an eye stripe.

Black-faced cuckoo-shrikes are also known as shufflewings as they have a habit of shuffling their wings upon landing. The also have a distinctive gliding flying technique.

The black-faced cuckoo-shrike is widespread and common throughout Australia, even in central desert regions. The Yindjibarndi people of the central and western Pilbara region call the black-faced cuckoo shrikes Julgira and they clip their wings and keep them as pets.

Black-faced cuckoo-shrikes feed on insects and other invertebrates. These may be caught in the air, taken from foliage or caught on the ground. In addition to insects, some fruits and seeds are also eaten.

The birds breed from August to February each year. Outside the breeding season, they flock in groups of up to a hundred birds.

Senior Women: Surfside 3 Vs Breakwater Eagles 3. Second placed Surfside played a thrilling 3 all draw with third placed Breakwater Eagles at Shell Road. The Waves led 2-0 at half time with Breakwater coming back strongly in the second half to grab a share of the points. Surfside goal scorers were Lara Williams, Maddison Bennett and Molly Strano.U/17 Boys: Geelong 19 Vs Surfside 0. Another horrible score line for the U17’s however it doesn’t look so bad when you realise it was 16 players versus 8. With 4 of our kick off time, it became an impossible task against another quality opponent. All of our 8 lads were magnificent in

fighting to the end against such overwhelming odds.U/15 Boys: Lara 2 Vs Surfside 3. Top of the table Waves maintained their recent outstanding form against second placed Lara. A high quality game saw the Waves come out on top after trailing 2-0 at half time. Goal scorers Benjamin Zebic 2, John Black 1. U/13 Boys: Surfside 1 Vs Geelong Rangers 6. The Waves faced a difficult game against top of the table Geelong Rangers. The boys matched the opposition for much of the game but in the end Rangers just had too much firepower for the Waves defence.U/12 Boys: Breakwater Eagles 3 Vs Surfside 0. U12s lost to Breakwater 3-0. Good result

for the boys who put up a great performance to hold this more experienced team to 1-0 at half time. Great improvement in defence. Best players Andrew Fitzpatrick, Josh Hill and Sam Timmins. Will split into two divisions this week and looking forward to some good soccer from the team.U/15 Girls: Lara 2 Vs Surfside 0. Everyone put in a great effort but with having 10 players, including 2 from U/13, the girls weren’t able to stop the continuous attack of the Lara forwards. Lara played a great game, with a fantastic shot from a corner securing their win. The girls had a few opportunities but just weren’t able to get the ball in the back of the net. Thanks

to David for coaching and the U/13’s for boosting the numbers. U/13 Girls: Surfside 1 Vs Surfcoast Blue 0. A fantastic high quality game between the 2 top teams saw Surfside emerge on top at the final whistle. The deadlock was broken by a terrific long range shot from Frances Dungey. Well done to both teams, supporters are looking forward to the next encounter and some more great football from 2 evenly matched and very competitive teams.Small Sided Games: Surfside Waves Blue U/11’s Vs Barwon Yellow.Surfside Waves Red U/11’s Vs Barwon Red. Windy and cold conditions greeted the players for round 9 fixtures played on the 2nd & 3rd July 2011. Most teams seemed to enjoy the conditions putting in very competitive performances across all age groups. Results:Small Sided Games: The emphasis of small sided games is on skill development and enjoyment of the game. There are no winners or losers and no ladders or results recorded. The Waves field 2 teams in U/11’s and 1 in the U/9’s. Although scores are not recorded, games are very competitive and players very enthusiastic. Generally it’s the adults that get hung up on the score not the kids! This week’s games were; U/11 Red Vs Barwon Heads, U/11 Blue Vs Barwon Blue, U/9’s Vs Breakwater Eagles.U/15 Girls: Surfside 1 Vs Surfcoast 1. The girls played one of their best games this season. With the ball

up in their offensive half for most of the game they were unlucky not to score more. Surfcoast had a great goal from a free kick just outside the box, up in the top corner, impossible to save. In the second half the girls were against the sun and the wind, but with the conditions against the girls they fought harder. With a scramble in front of goals Olivia Smith put the ball in the back of the net. With ten minutes to go both teams put in more effort but neither team were able to score. Great game girls! U/13 Girls: Surfside 2 Vs Bell Park Blue 1. A close encounter in cold blustery conditions at Shell Rd. Goals from Frances Dungey and Lucy Schaeche-Priestley saw the Waves over the line at the final whistle. Sen Men: Surfside 5 Vs Bell Park 3. Top of the ladder Waves hosted Bell Park at Shell Rd. Locked at 2 all at half time (thanks to a penalty save by keeper Adrian Hawken)

under 15 boys started early scoring 2 goals in the opening minutes, with a third coming just before half-time. Geelong Rangers made a strong start to the second half almost scoring several times, but were out-played by some skilful passing and solid defensive work by our lads. A second half hat-trick by Ben Zebic secured this convincing victory.U/13 Boys: Surfside 1 Vs Surfcoast 2. Another competitive match between 2 even teams. The Waves trailed 2-0 at half time and fought gallantly in the second half but just couldn’t find an equaliser to lose narrowly 2-1.U/12 Boys: Surfside 1 Vs Surfcoast 2. The Waves led 1-0 at half time with Lucas Wharmby scoring and should have had more goals if they had taken their chances. Surfcoast rallied in the second half to edge out the Waves 2-1.

Table-topping Waves

IN men’s Sunday league soccer division 2, Surfside Waves are still flying high at the top of the table following a great run of five consecutive victories.

In round 8 the Waves played away to Corio Bay and came away with a hard fought 1-0 victory. The poor state of the playing surface ruined any chance of good football being played and even had a play in the deciding goal!

A Corio Bay back pass hit a bobble causing their goalkeeper to completely mis-kick the ball, that then spun behind him, allowing Staffan Hargreaves to nip in and

slide the ball into the empty net.In round 9 the Waves played

at home to Bell Park in a free flowing game aided by a quality “Wembley” like playing surface. Captain Troy McClelland was sidelined due to injury and his absence in the defence was soon exposed by Bellpark, easily beating the Waves offside trap and taking a 1-0 lead. But the scores were levelled later in the half when Kai Thieme’s ferocious shot could only be parried by the goalkeeper, allowing Staffan Hargreaves to head home from close range. And not long afterwards the

Waves took a 2-1 lead when an unmarked Staffan Hargreaves fired a thunderous volley home from 10 yards.

But Bellpark fought back and equalised 2-2 when a shot took a wicked deflection past the wrong footed Adrian Hawken in the Waves goal. And things looked to be getting worse when just before half time Bellpark were awarded a penalty, but in form goalie Adrian Hawken pulled off an excellent save to keep the sides level at the break.

In the second half the Waves were quick out the blocks and

restored their lead after only two minutes play when a curling Andy Hedges corner was headed home by Nick Hargreaves. And the Waves later extended their lead when they were awarded a penalty, which was successfully converted by Nick Hargreaves.

And not long after the veteran completed his hat-trick cheekily lobbing the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to give the Waves a commanding 5-2 lead.

Bellpark did manage to pull one goal back late in the day, but the Waves deserved the victory in this very entertaining match.

SURF Sports Nippers begin their 2011/2012 preseason on Sunday, July 24.The Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club is starting up a nipper swim club for Term 3, from 9.30 -10.30 am at BASC Ocean Grove pool (every week for the term) for those who competed in the junior life saving carnivals over the summer.The program is to increase the nippers overall swim endurance in the pool to be ready for ocean swimming for Term 4.The cost for the inaugural swim club is normal pool entry. The lifesaving club is supplying lanes and Level 1 surf coaches.“The surf sport nippers train in terms 1 and 4

and compete in carnivals over the summer. The program is designed to carry them into the senior ranks of the club over time,” said junior activities manager Leisha Riddington. “This is as opposed to the Surf Ed nippers program which is an intensive three weeks over the summer when the beach is packed with kids, and is largely in place for holidaymakers.”Members are asked to confirm their spot by emailing Leisha and saying what level of swimming their nipper is currently up to.It’s also a great opportunity for parents to get in the pool too and have a swim, [email protected].

THE Grubbers are taking part in the 2011 Army Challenge Award for Victorian Clubs and players.

By registering online at www.defencejobs.gov.au/armyaward club members and friends can play online once a day to help their club win a share in over $45,000 worth of prizes, as well as an Army Sherrin football for themselves.

The third quarter game is “speckie marking” – the longer you hang on the shoulders of your opponent in the online game the more points you earn for your club.

It’s fair to say that the Grubbers players need to lift their workrate if they’re to win any prizes for the club. They currently sit 114th on the ladder of Victorian teams.

The Army challenge player award will go to a player nominated by a club administrator who has best demonstrated courage, initiative and team work (and accumulated the most points online).

The prize is an army weekend in Canberra – which includes tackling some tough army obstacle courses in Canberra – for them and a friend.

THE Grubbers improved form this season has been reflected in a number of interesting stat differentials from last year.

The club has to have one of the most experienced statisticians in the BFL in Peter Keating, who worked with Geelong’s AFL club for over a decade through the 90s.

This year, he said, the side has eight-10 players who are getting over 20 possessions a game, whereas last season that number was around three to five, with nine or 10 players getting under 20 touches and the rest under 10.

Amongst the many reasons for this increase could be the presence this season of new recruits Pete Coredig and Tom Foott. Both play in the ruck and unsurprisingly the team has markedly increased the number of hit-outs it is winning.

This translates, generally, to more clearances and more possessions.

Another standout stat comes

courtesy of Bernie Lynch, who has taken 20-25 marks inside the defensive fifty. This is well in excess of any of his teammates and while the team works to get the ball in his hands, most of his marks have been direct intercepts of opposition kicks.

The Grubbers are the highest scoring team in the BFL and so are obviously kicking more goals, perhaps a result of winning more ruck clearances but also because they are taking more marks inside fifty than they were last year.

McGregor says that this year the side is kicking more, which has been a conscious directive from the coaching staff. “Our kick to handball ratio is better. Where it was 55-45 last year, it’s around 65-35 this year,” he said.

Peter Keating, with the kind of insight which makes him such a valuable member of the club, noted that in the first quarter of matches this ratio is 50-50. After this, once the side settles into the game, they kick the ball much more, at about 70-30 for the rest of the game.

ROUND six resulted in a good win for the under 14 division two Cobras after a close game against St Mary’s while round seven was a disappointing display against Newtown & Chilwell.

Round eight was against Barwon Heads. Barwon Heads had first use of a strong breeze and used it well. Although things were pretty even around the ground, the Heads piled on four goals to the Cobra’s one – courtesy of Ned Thorley.

With the aid of the breeze in the second quarter, the Cobras evened things up by half-time – precisely in fact. Ned Weatherley got the Cobras back into the game and showed his teammates the way by hitting the ball – and any opposition players with it – hard.

Against the breeze and the odds in the third quarter, the back line stood resolute but it was difficult to stem the tide completely. As hard as Zakk Bellman, Riley Hollmer and James Hodder were trying, Barwon Heads found avenues to goal mainly through creative handballing and hard running. The Cobras again

scored an invaluable goal against the wind but at three-quarter-time it was the Heads with a handy 16-point lead.

Half way through the last quarter the gap had been reduced to less than a goal and it looked like the Cobras would run away with the game. But the Barwon Heads boys refused to lie down and battled their hearts out. Nat Gravener kept running and pumping the ball forward but the Cobras forwards were off target until Luke Bastiaan took a fantastic pack mark and kicked truly with only a couple of minutes on the clock. A great game played in great spirits. Final score 8.7 (55) to 7.8 (50).

ROUND seven was on a rare cracker of a weekend and the under 14 division five Cobras made the journey over to Anakie.

After two quick goals on the board in the first, Anakie looked very dangerous.

Buddha and Vincent McDonald combined to put the first on the board. The back line was functioning well and held off some strong attack from Anakie.

With another one, courtesy of Buddha, the Cobras went into quarter time one point down.

A great team effort enabled the boys to keep Anakie goal-less in the second term, with awesome bodywork from Riley Denneman and Daniel Ryan. Sam Quigley gave us his best, and Riley Featherby was bursting through packs and using his pace well.

The third quarter had the Cobras buckling under siege, as Anakie piled on four goals to one. Down by 15 points going into the final term, the Cobras produced their best quarter of the season. The tackling and smothering from the boys was simply superb, with fantastic efforts from Liam Warren, Jack Preistly and Lachlan Smith, which stopped certain goals. After copping a hard knock in the first quarter, Hamish Drake showed his determination and completed a big day out with his third goal.

The Cobras clawed their way back and kept Anakie scoreless, to win by seven points. Final score 7.7 (49) to 6.6 (42).

THE Ocean Grove girls made the scenic trip down the Great Ocean Road to take on Anglesea in BFL Netball on Saturday. The sun came out for a few close games of netball, with C Grade going down by just one goal. The junior teams had a successful day, as most teams dominated their Anglesea opponents. Next week will see the Grove teams take on Geelong Amatuer. U11- All the girls played a consistent game, with Ashlee Duhamel and Mietta Wilkins named as the best players.U13 (1)- The team had a good win over Anglesea. Maddi Traynor, Jaimie El Hage and Taya Payne were cited as the best players.

U13 (2)- The girls dominated Anglesea in a 51-2 victory. Combining well as a team in all their playing positions enabled the Grove team to control the game. Best players were Sienna Beasley, Sophie Crowthers and Michaela Giblin. U13 (3)- Ladder leaders, Newtown Chilwell, were too strong for the girls. Bryley Reid, Lucy Conquit and Sofie Beale were among the best players. U13 (4)- OG 34 defeated Grovedale 12. Romi Bergman, Claudia Britt and Molly Winter combined well in the goal circle. U15 (1)- A great game by all the girls saw a win of 40-18 in favour of Grove. Jess Bennett and Zanna

Woods with 20 goals were named among the best players.U15 (2)- Sticking to a game plan and using strong passes led the girls to an easy win over Anglesea. Meg Richardson, with 21 goals, was named as the best player. U15 (3)- OG 35 defeated St Marys 14. Strong play by Jayne Fendyk, Paige Woolhouse and Mikaela Dodd saw them cited as the best players. The coach contributed the win to excellent centre court play and accurate shooting. U17 (1)- A hard fought and physical game saw Ocean Grove apply plenty of pressure to come out on top. The coach noted the excellent shooting by

Jess Morris and Emma Doolan. U17 (2)- A great game by all the girls finished in Grove winning by over 30 goals. Siobhan Baker, Meg O’Brien and Lauren Barber were named the best players. U19- The girls played well in a very close game, unfortunately going down to Anglesea by four goals. Jasmin Ervin and Megan Hand were among the best players.D Grade- A great first half by the girls resulted in even scores at half time but a disappointing second half resulted in a loss to Anglesea. Alex Williamson in defence was among the best players. C Grade- A game that came down to the wire,

with the girls losing by just one goal. In a hard fought game Brodie Cook, Sarah Murray and Chris Blaskovic played well. B Grade- Although the Grove defence was working well, the girls had a loss to a strong Anglesea team. The coach noted the team needed to work on passing. Maddy Morris and Kat Sykes were cited as the best players. A Grade- A great team effort by the girls unfortunately resulted in a loss to Anglesea. Bree Frankhauser, Zanna Woods and Lauren Ollis were named as the best players on the day.

Grove turning a cornerOCEAN Grove netball senior coach Tracey Thorley says her young side has turned the corner this year following a string of competitive performances.

Lauren Ollis, Zanna Woods and Bree Fankhauser are among the youngsters in the side who have really started to play well.

“They’ve been playing unbelievably well and if they stick together next year anything can happen,” she said, prior to the weekend’s bye round.

“I’m really pleased with how they’re

going. They’re happy in their play and have been more competitive in this half of the season,” she said.

“They’re shooting well. Our goalers are hitting their peak. Tina Birch shot 30 a couple of weeks ago and then Elkanah Foott did the same a week later. Everyone’s assisting well too.”

Tracey gave the girls a night off training prior to the bye and with no game on, the girls have a chance to freshen up for the final six rounds of the season.

A BRAVE Grubbers side lost to Geelong Amateur by two points on Saturday, July 2.

Like the previous week against Anglesea the ball was in the Grubbers forward line for most of the final minutes of the game.

But this time there were no last minute heroics, no goal after the siren to win the game.

However, it could be argued the heroics came in the latter half of the third quarter and for the entire final quarter in a fight-back where an undermanned and undersized Grubbers side willed themselves back from 27 points down to within a point when Wayde Piec snapped a goal over his head, with under five minutes left in the game.

What had been a high scoring shoot out to halftime – Geelong kicked 9 goals in the second term to set up their win – became an end to end arm wrestle in the second half.

Time and again Bernie Lynch – who must just about be leading the club’s best and fairest – repelled Geelong attacks. In doing so he shut down the dangerous Ben Boseley and helped keep the Grubbers in the

game.For three quarters the Grubbers

were the better side, hurting Geelong with their run and skills. It was the nine-goal second term against the breeze that set up Geelong’s win.

Dalton kicked a much needed goal on the three quarter time siren to reduce the margin to 19 points and ignite an enthusiasm and resolve in the side noticeable in the team’s huddle and efforts in the last quarter.

Geelong looked tired and the run of the Grubbers mosquito fleet of Paddy Maloney, Sean Britt, Dave Grey and Ben Ricardo (who carried an injury into the last term) threatened to break Geelong open and win the Grubbers the game.

Unfortunately, unlike last week, the Grubbers couldn’t get their noses in front when it counted.

So engrossing were the final minutes that, on the Grubbers bench, Shaun Moloney celebrated when the siren went

thinking the Grubbers had won the game.

While proud of his team’s effort Cameron McGregor was left to lament his side’s inaccuracy in front of goal.

“I think we were 7-1 at one stage and then 9-11. We kicked poorly in the third and even in the last quarter we missed a couple we should’ve kicked,” he said.

Full forward Daniel Moloney, who otherwise played a good game to finish with 4 goals, was the main culprit with Piec also missing a gettable set shot.

McGregor was equally disappointed with the sides second quarter. “We really blew our chance in the second. To let them kick nine goals was disappointing,” he said.

The Grubbers welcomed back Costello to the side but were without Tom McManus, Tom Foott and Row O’Callaghan and lost Shane Jack and Pete Corredig to hamstring injuries in the first and third quarters of the game respectively.

So reduced were both sides’ big man stocks late in the game, that utility Kane Reardon was

contesting the ruck against a Geelong onballer.

McGregor was pleased with the efforts of his young runners in Britt and Paddy Moloney who both played fine last quarters. “We always knew we were a bit fitter and quicker than them, but equally their bigger bodies probably knocked us off the ball a bit. Row O’Callaghan (who missed the game to attend a wedding) probably would have made a difference there,” he said.

Final scores were Ocean Grove 12.14-86, to Geelong Amateur 13.10-88

The under 18s lost by 16 points to Drysdale, who are undefeated for the season and loom as the main danger to Ocean Grove’s premiership defence.

Coach Rory Nichol was disappointed with the loss but is pleased that the side is continuing to improve through the year.

“We’re definitely getting better and tighter as a unit and we’ve got a lot of improvement left in us,” he said. “At the moment it’s all about getting that top three spot, getting that double chance because anything can happen from there.”
