Occurrence of Food Allergy

Food allergy takes place due to some abnormal immune reaction or response to a food protein. It is similar to the response that occurs when pollens or allergens are inhaled. It is due to specific type of immunoglobulin or antibody known as IgE, which is produced against food. These antibodies recognize the food proteins as the foreign particles and trigger the release of chemicals, especially histamine. Some of the common food substances that cause allergies are peanut, egg, dairy, shellfish, soy, wheat, tree nut and seafood.

Food allergy tests performed in India

There are various methods of food allergy test in India:

● RAST Test- This type of test is done to determine IgE antibodies or presence of hive like reactions that are produced from the release of histamine at the site of skin prick, patch contact with food.

● Scratch Test- This test is commonly performed over blood test. It is less expensive and involves testing of more than one substance in single test. It is done by preparing small ink outlines on the skin and then a substance for which the testing is to be done is either placed on the skin or just under it and left like that for at least fifteen minutes.

● Food Allergy tests Performed by Experts- These food allergy tests are done under the supervision of the specially trained physicians known as allergists.
