Deep within a well-forested park,there grew a tall and leafy oaktree. Its trunk was strong and itsbranches were thick and wide. Onone of the lower branches sat anew nest. Two robins had chosen

this place to start a home. MamaRobin had laid four beautiful blueeggs. Day and night she coveredthem with her body so they wouldstay cozy and warm. Papa Robinworked hard to find food forMama Robin while she tended to

the eggs.

No seio de um parque bemarborizado, havia um alto e frondosocarvalho. Seu tronco era forte e seusgalhos grossos e compridos. Foi emum dos galhos mais baixos que doissabiás recentemente decidiram

começar um lar. A Mamãe Sabiáhavia posto quatro lindos ovos edurante dias e noites os chocavapara mantê-los quentinhos eaconchegados. Enquanto isso, oPapai Sabiá trabalhava duroprocurando comida para sua esposa.



Finally, one day, the four little eggscracked open and out came fourlittle baby robins. They didn‟t look

much like robins to begin with, butin a short time they had fluffyfeathers and had all opened their

eyes for a look at the big, wideworld around them.

Mama and Papa Robin gave them allnames. They called the two boysBilly and Reddy, and they called thetwo girls Cherry and Chirpy.

Quando os ovos finalmente seabriram, nasceram quatro pequenossabiás. No princípio não se pareciammuito com sabiás, mas logo suaspenas cresceram e eles abriram osolhos para contemplarem o grande eimenso mundo que os cercava.

Mamãe e Papai Sabiá escolheram juntos os nomes dos filhos.Chamaram os dois garotos de Tico eTeco, e as meninas de Quica e Vivi.



One of the first lessons of life thatall these little baby robins neededto learn was to have better manners.They often fought amongthemselves over who would get thebest or the most food, and theynever said “thank you” to Papa or

Mama Robin, who worked veryhard to find food for all of them.No matter how much their parentstalked to them and tried to helpthem get along, they werebecoming quite naughty little birds,quarreling and teasing, and pushingand shoving much of the time.Then one day something happenedthat changed all that.

Uma das primeiras lições queaqueles pequenos sabiás tiveram queaprender foram regras de boasmaneiras. Sempre brigavam para verquem pegava mais comida ou omelhor pedaço. Além disso, nuncadiziam "Obrigado" aos pais, quetrabalhavam duro para achar comidapara todos eles. Nada que os paisdiziam para ajudá-los a se daremmelhor parecia funcionar. Estavamse tornando passarinhos malcriados,brigando por causa de comida,

implicando e empurrando-se um aooutro a maior parte do tempo. Atéque um dia aconteceu algo quemudou tudo isso.



Mama and Papa Robin were getting

ready to fly out to search for somebreakfast for everyone. Thismorning everyone wasextra hungry.

“Papa, can you bring me a nice, fat,

juicy worm?” pleaded Billy.

“I‟ll try, Billy,” said Papa Robin,“but it‟s not always easy to find

worms, because the ground is hardand dry now and the worms arehiding deep underground.”

“Oh, I don‟t like worms,” whined

Chirpy. “They‟re too long and

squiggly to swallow. Papa, can youjust bring us some bugs?”

Mamãe e Papai estavam se preparando

para voar à procura de comida para afamília. Naquela manhã todos estavamextremamente famintos.

- Papai, o senhor poderia me trazeruma minhoca bem grande, gorda esuculenta? - pediu Tico.

- Tentarei, Tico. - respondeu o PapaiSabiá. - Mas não está fácil encontrarminhocas. A terra está dura e secaagora e as minhocas estão seescondendo mais no fundo.

-Eu não gosto de minhocas! -choramingou Vivi. - São muitocompridas e difícil de engolir. O-senhor não pode só trazer uns insetos?



“No way,” piped in Cherry. “Most

bugs are horrible tasting. I‟d rather

have some nice fresh berries.”

“Children, remember your

manners,” Mama Robin gently

reminded her hungry brood. “Whenyou ask for things, you need to bekind and polite and say things like,„Please, Mama and Papa, could you

bring me a nice worm?‟ When there

is food you do not like, you shouldstill try to eat it with thankful hearts

because God has supplied it andhelped your father andme find it for you.”

-Nem pensar! - interrompeu Quica. - Amaioria dos insetos tem um gostohorrível. Prefiro umas amoras gostosase fresquinhas.

- Crianças, lembrem-se de ter modos. -

lembrou gentilmente Mamãe Sabiá àninhada faminta. - Quando pediremalgo, precisam ser gentis e educados edizer "mamãe e papai, poderiam, porfavor, trazer uma minhoca bemgostosa?” Quando não gostarem da

comida, deveriam estar agradecidos e

fazer um esforço para comê-la, porqueDeus supriu e ajudou seu pai e eu aencontrá-la.



The young birds listened for amoment, but soon forgot all aboutwhat Mama Robin had just toldthem.

“You know what I would really

like?” demanded Reddy, “Somenice, crunchy seeds!”

“Papa,” said Billy, “why don‟t you

just get what every one wants so wewill all be happy?”

“Yes, get us what we want!”

echoed the others. “That will makeus happy!”

“Oh dear, what can we do?” whispered Mama Robin to PapaRobin.

Os jovens pássaros escutaram por ummomento, mas logo esqueceram tudoque a mãe lhes dissera.

- Sabe do que eu mais gosto? - disseTeco em tom exigente - de sementes

bem gostosas e crocantes!- Papai - perguntou Tico - por que oSenhor não pega o que todo mundo quere assim todos ficam felizes?

-Isso mesmo! Pegue todas as coisas quequeremos! - responderam os outros. -

Isso nos deixaria muito felizes!-Oh! Querido, o que faremos? -sussurrou a Mamãe Sabiápara o Papai Sabiá.



“I guess it would be good if we

could give each one just what they

want. We will have to do a lot of extra searching, but if it will makethem happy, it may be worth it.Come on, let‟s go see what we can

find,” Papa Robin said at last.

Mama Robin usually preferred to

stay near the nest and look for foodclose by so she could watch over heryoung flock. The problem was that itwas getting harder to find food nearthe nest. Mama knew that today sheand Papa would both have togo quite far away to find all the

different things her children weredemanding.

-Acho que seria bom se pudéssemosdar o que cada um quer. Teremos que

procurar bastante, mas se eles vãoficar felizes, vale a pena. Venha,vamos ver o que encontramos. -Disse Papai Sabiá por último.

Normalmente a Mamãe Sabiá prefereficar nos arredores do ninho eprocurar comida ali por perto para

poder vigiar a ninhada. O problemaera que estava ficando difícil acharcomida próximo ao ninho. O PapaiSabiá normalmente vai longe àprocura de diferentes tipos decomida. Mamãe sabia que hoje ela eo pai teriam que ir bem longe para

poderem encontrar todas as coisasque os filhos estavam pedindo.



“Papa and I will have to fly quite far

away to find all this different foodfor you today. Please try to bepatient and kind to each other whilewe are gone. Okay?”

“Okay,” all the young robinschirped.

-Papai e eu teremos que voar um-bocado longe para achar tudo o quevocês querem hoje. Então, por favor,sejam pacientes e gentis uns com osoutros enquanto estivermos fora, estábem?

- Tudo bem - piaram os filhotinhos desabiá.



So Papa and Mama Robin went flyingoff to the far side of the park. PapaRobin was the first one to spot a verylarge earthworm wiggling his way upto the surface and into the grass. Withgreat speed he flew down and grabbedthe worm in his beak. The wormresisted with all its might, and PapaRobin pulled and pulled, but the wormwas too strong and was getting away.Mama saw the struggle so she joinedthe fray and together they pulled andpulled, and at last, the great big wormlet go and the happy robins flew backto the nest with their very large catch.

Então, Papai e Mamãe Sabiávoaram para o outro lado doparque. O pai foi o primeiro aavistar uma imensa minhocasaindo para a superfície em

direção à grama. Voou velozmentee agarrou a minhoca pelas costas.Papai Sabiá puxou e puxou, mas aminhoca era forte demais e estavaescapando. Mamãe viu a luta euniu-se ao marido. Juntos elespuxaram até que a grande minhocase soltou. Felizes, os sabiásvoaram de volta ao ninho com aenorme presa.



“Oh look! Papa found my worm!”

Billy chirped. “It looks like I‟m going to

get my breakfast first!” Billy opened his

very large mouth expecting Papa to dropthe whole worm in.

“Billy,” Mama Robin told him, “thisworm is big enough for all of you. Papaand I will keep looking, but it takes quitea long time to fly across the park andback. You children will just have toshare this worm until we getback.”

-Vejam! O papai achou a minhaminhoca! - piou Tico. - Ao queparece vou tomar o café damanhã primeiro! - disse Ticoabrindo o grande bico esperandoque Papai colocasse nele aminhoca inteira.

- Tico, - disse a Mamãe Sabiá -Essa minhoca é suficientementegrande para todos vocês. Papai eeu continuaremos a procurar,mas talvez demore um pouco até

atravessarmos o parque evoltarmos. Vocês vão ter quedividir essa minhoca.



Mama and Papa Robin flew off again to continue their search forbreakfast, leaving the young birds towork out the details of sharing theworm among themselves. Well, youguessed it … Billy didn‟t want

to share.

“Sorry, guys, this is my worm! You

all ordered something else for breakfast. You‟ll just have to wait

your turn. Chirpy doesn‟t even like

worms anyway.”

Mamãe e Papai Sabiá voaram de novopara continuar procurando o café damanhã, deixando os jovenspassarinhos resolverem os detalhes edividirem a minhoca. É, aconteceu oque você pensou... Tico não queriacompartilhar.

- Sinto muito, pessoal, esta minhoca éminha! Vocês pediram outra coisa parao café da manhã. Terão que esperarsua vez. A Vivi nem gosta deminhocas!



“But what if they can‟t find any

crunchy seeds anywhere?” Reddy

fretted out loud. “I will have no

food today and I am very hungryright now!”

“Me too,” said Cherry. “Please,

Billy, let us have some of theworm too!”

“No, no, no! No way! This is myworm, and I‟m going to eat it all

by myself!”

-Mas e se não conseguirem encontrarnenhuma semente crocante? -perguntou Teco impaciente. - Não voucomer nada hoje, e estou com fome.

- Eu também, - disse Quica. - Por favorTico, deixe-nos comer um pedacinhoda minhoca também!

- Não, não, e não! De jeito nenhum!Esta minhoca é minha e vou comê-lasozinho!



That is when the great tug of warbegan. Billy grabbed one end of theworm and Chirpy, Cherry and Reddygrabbed the other end and startedpulling. Billy was big, but he was no

match for his three siblings all pullingagainst him. Billy decided to climb upon the edge of the nest to get betterfooting and yank the worm away fromthe rest of them.

Cherry gasped, let go of the worm andcried, “Oh, please get down, Billy! It

looks very dangerous up there and youmight fall!”

Foi aí que começou o cabo-de-guerra. Tico segurou uma ponta daminhoca e Vivi, Quica e Teco aoutra, e começaram a puxar. Tico eragrande, mas não o suficiente para

ganhar de seus três irmãos. Decidiuentão subir para a beirada do ninhopara ficar numa posição melhor earrancar a minhoca dos outros.

Quica ficou alarmada, largou aminhoca e disse: - Por favor, Tico,

desça daí! Parece muito perigoso evocê pode cair!



Billy didn‟t want to answer, because

if he opened his beak he would letgo of the worm, so he just kept onpulling. He was standing against theedge of the nest and all that was

holding him was the worm. WhenCherry let go, Billy yanked theworm with all his might, and Reddyand Chirpy lost their balance andfell forward. Billy started to fallbackwards off the edge of the nest!He opened his beak in fright and lost

hold of the worm. Down and downBilly fell. He tried to flap his wingsbut it didn‟t help much, because he

didn‟t have all of his wing feathers

yet, and besides, he didn‟t know

how to fly. He landed with a “plop”

on some soft grass.

Tico, porém, não quis responder,porque se abrisse o bico largaria aminhoca, então continuou puxando.Ele agora estava quasecompletamente fora do ninho, bem

na beirada, e a única coisa que oprendia ali era a minhoca. QuandoQuica largou, Tico puxou com todaa sua força e Teco e Vivi perderam oequilíbrio e caíram para a frente.Tico começou a cair para trás!Apavorado abriu o bico e largou a

minhoca. Tico caiu e caiu. Bateu asasas mas não adiantou nada, porqueele ainda não tinha todas as penas e,além do mais, nem sabia voar. Foiuma queda e tanto até uma moita degrama macia.



“Oh no!” squawked Reddy.

“Look, Billy has fallen all the

way to the ground. Is he hurt?”

“I don‟t think so,” said Cherry.

“See, he‟s getting up and

hopping around. But he can‟t fly

yet and he is too big for Mamaand Papa to try to lift, so howwill he ever get back inthe nest?”

Their eyes scanned the woods inevery direction to see if helpcould be found, but therewas none.

-Oh não! - gritou Teco. - Olhe, oTico caiu lá embaixo no chão.Será que ele se machucou?

- Acho que não, - disse Quica. -Ele se levantou e está pulando.Mas ainda não consegue voar e égrande demais para o Papai ou aMamãe carregá-lo, então como éque ele vai voltar para o ninho?

Olharam atenciosos para afloresta em todas as direções paraver se encontravam ajuda, masnada.



“Oh no!” cried Cherry. “Look over

there, coming across the lawn thisway! It‟s that big mean old tomcat

that Mama and Papa and all theirfriends have to keep chasing away.”

“Poor Billy doesn‟t see him yet, but

that old cat will soon see Billy! Wehave got to do something!” Reddy

said in his most determined voice.

“Oh dear, this doesn‟t look too good.

Let‟s all pray for Billy!” said Chirpy.

“Dear God, please keep Billy. Rescue

him from that terrible tomcat, andsomehow, help him to get back up

here in the nest.”

-Oh não! - disse Quica. - Olhem

bem! Vejam quem está vindo nestadireção. É aquele gato malvado quea Mamãe, o Papai e todos os seusamigos estão sempre espantando.

-Coitado do Tico! Ele ainda não oviu, mas aquele gato logo o verá!Temos que fazer alguma coisa! -

Disse Teco determinado.

- Ai meu Deus, acho que vai ser umatragédia. Vamos orar pelo Tico! -disse Vivi. "Querido Deus, por favorproteja o Tico. Salve-o daquele gatoterrível e ajude-o de alguma forma a

voltar aqui para cima no ninho.



Down on the ground, little Billy washaving a few troubled thoughts of hisown. He had no worm. He had no nicewarm nest. His parents were gone andhe was all alone on the ground, themost dangerous place in the world forbaby birds.

Billy peeked up above the grass andlooked around. His eyes spotted a largegray tomcat making its way towardshim. His heart froze. I’m in serious

trouble, he said to himself. Billydecided to pray too. He prayed harderthan he had ever prayed before, and hewas very, very polite when he talkedto Jesus.

Lá em baixo no chão, Tico tambémestava preocupado. Não tinha mais aminhoca e nem o ninhoaconchegante. Seus pais haviamsaído e ele estava sozinho no chão, olugar mais perigoso parapassarinhos.

Deu uma olhada à sua volta e viuum grande gato preto vindo em suadireção. Ficou com o coração namão. Estou encrencado de verdade,pensou ele. Decidiu então orar. Oroucomo nunca havia orado antes, e foimuito, muito educado ao falar comJesus.



"Por favor, querido Jesus, estou muito,muito arrependido por ter sido umpassarinho malvado, egoísta e ingrato.Prometo me esforçar ao máximo paraaprender a minha lição. Por favor,guarde-me e proteja-me. E por favor,

me ajude a voltar para o ninho dealgum jeito.

O gato preto se aproximava cada vezmais do lugar onde Tico se escondia.De repente, Vivi viu o Papai voandoem sua direção e a Mamãe atrás dele.Vivi gritou o mais alto que pôde:"Rápido! Rápido! O Tico está emapuros! Um gato vai pegá-lo!

“Please dear Jesus, I am so sorry forbeing a bad, selfish, grabby andunthankful bird. I promise I‟ll do mybest to learn my lesson. Oh, pleasekeep me safe. And please, somehowhelp me get back into the nest.”

Closer and closer the old tomcatcame to where Billy sat, still hidingn the grass. Suddenly, Chirpypotted Papa flying towards them,

and Mama behind him. Chirpy criedout in her loudest voice, “Hurry!

Hurry! Billy is in trouble and there‟s a cat coming!”



Papa‟s sharp eyes soon spotted the cat

and could see he was nearly to wherepoor Billy was trembling in the grass.Papa let out a loud, angry cry anddived straight down at the cat andpecked his head and flapped his

wings noisily.Then Mama attacked the cat as well,swooping in for a quick peck and thenescaping before the cat could catchher. The cat was so surprised by thissudden attack from the air that he

raced off across the park.

Papai logo viu o gato, já perto deonde Tico, tremendo, se escondia.Papai deu um grito bem alto ezangado, mergulhou em direção aogato e deu-lhe umas bicadas aomesmo tempo em que batia as asas

fazendo bastante barulho.

Mamãe também atacou o gato.Ela acertava-lhe uma bicada e voavapara fora do alcance de suas garras. Ogato ficou tão surpreso que fugiucorrendo para o outro lado do parque



His brother and sisters gave a sigh of relief. Billy was safe for the moment.He wouldn‟t starve because Mama

and Papa would find him and feedhim on the ground. But the groundwas still a very dangerous place and

it would be some time before Billycould fly.

Then the miracle happened. On theother side of the open space besidethe great oak tree, an old man hadbeen resting on a park bench. Whenhe saw the robins attack the cat, heknew that they must be protectingone of their babies.

The kind old man rose from hisbench and strolled over to the oaktree. It didn‟t take him long to spot

Billy hiding in the grass.

No ninho, os outros passarinhosrespiraram aliviados. Tico estavaseguro por agora. Ele não morreria defome porque a Mamãe e o Papaipoderiam alimentá-lo no chão. Masera um lugar perigoso e ia demorar umbom tempo até que Tico pudesse voar.

Foi quando aconteceu um milagre.No outro lado da clareira onde tudoestava acontecendo, um homem jávelho descansava no banco do parque.Ao ver os sabiás atacarem o gato,

imaginou que provavelmente estariamprotegendo um de seus filhotes.

O bondoso senhor, levantando-se, foiaté ao carvalho. Não demorou muitopara ele ver Tico escondido na grama.



“You look quite healthy and perky,”

the old man told little Billy, as heknelt down to pick him up. “Is your

nest somewhere nearby?” Then he

heard little Chirpy chirping loudly upin the tree. She was so worriedabout Billy.

“There you go, little fellow,” said the

old man, as he pushed Billy back intothe nest. He smiled at Mama and PapaRobin and continued on his walk.

-Você parece bastante saudável eforte - disse o velho ao Tico,ajoelhando-se para pegá-lo. - Seuninho é aqui perto? - Foi então queouviu Vivi piar bem alto no ninho.Como ela estava preocupada com oTico!

- Pronto, rapazinho, - disse o velhocolocando Tico de volta no ninho.Em seguida, sorriu para a Mamãe e oPapai Sabiá e continuou seu passeio.



It‟s so good to be home!” said

Billy. “I‟m sorry, everyone! I was so

elfish and unloving. I really learnedlesson the hard way today!”

We all learned a lesson today,” said

Chirpy. “I feel like we almost grewp in one day.”

Come on, everyone,” said Reddy.

Look, we still have a nice big

worm to eat.”

-É tão bom estar em casa! - disse Tico.- Desculpem-me! Fui egoísta emalvado. Hoje eu realmente aprendiuma lição da maneira difícil!

- Hoje todos nós aprendemos umalição, - disse Vivi. - É quase como setivéssemos crescido tudo em um únicodia.

- Venham, - disse Teco. - Olhem! Aindatemos uma grande minhoca paracomer.



So they all shared the worm with oneanother. Mama and Papa Robinlooked on proudly and were sopleased to see them all behaving sonicely. From then on, the youngrobins made a big effort to be kind to

each other and they were very politeto their parents. Whenever they weregiven some yummy food, they allchorused a big “Thank you!”

E todos dividiram a minhoca. Mamãee Papai Sabiá ficaram olhando comorgulho e satisfação os filhos secomportarem tão bem. Daquele diaem diante, os jovens sabiás passarama se esforçar bastante para serem

gentis entre si e muito educados comos pais. Sempre que ganhavam algogostoso, diziam um "Muito obrigado"de coração!
