The Ilona Copen Award is an annual, honorary award, celebrating the significant contribution to the ballet field by an individual, company or institution who or which provides young ballet dancers with: the finest educational, mentoring and cultural experiences; inspiration and encouragement to advance their careers to their fullest potential, raising their artistry, and stimulating their growth as individual human beings.

The Award honors a recipient who or which works to further ballet as an art form by: discovering, nurturing and developing un-derexposed dance/ballet talent; promoting international under-standing and goodwill through collaborative efforts across different

artistic disciplines; upholding the traditions and history of this classical art form; and securing its future through fostering the advancement of ballet.

The recipients of the Ilona Copen Award are elected through a nomination process by the Artistic Board of NYIBC.The award will be presented for the first time in 2011.

This award is made possible in part by a generous donation from Mrs. Judith Frost.

Patricia McBride began her ballet training in her hometown of Teaneck, NJ, before receiving a scholar-ship to the School of American Ballet. Within a year of joining the company, she danced a solo in The Figure in the Carpet,

created for her by Balanchine. McBride attained the rank of soloist in 1960 and by 1961, at age 18, she became the youngest principal dancer in NYCB. She spent 3 decades with the company, and created leading roles in many memorable ballets, including Harlequinade, Tarantella, the “Rubies” section of Jewels, Brahms–Schoenberg

Quartet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Coppelia, Union Jack, Who Cares?, and Vienna Waltzes. Jerome Robbins choreo-graphed principal roles for her in his In the Night, The Goldberg Variations, Dybbuk, Opus 19 and The Four Seasons. Her years of performing un-der Balanchine’s direction have gained her the expertise necessary to restage many of his master works. McBride has been associate artistic director of NCDT since 1996 and also serves as a master teacher at NC Dance Theatre School of Dance and Chau-tauqua Ballet’s School of Dance. She is married to Jean–Pierre Bonnefoux and they have two children.

Jean–Pierre Bonnefoux was born in France and began his dance training at the age of 10 at the School of the Paris Opera Ballet. At age 14, he joined the company, and by age 21, was named Danseur Etoile. Bonnefoux danced

with the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballets before being invited by George Balanchine to dance with New York City Ballet. After 10 years with NYCB, Bonnefoux joined the School of Music at Indiana University as chairman and artistic director of the

ballet department. Since 1983, he has been the artistic director of the ballet company and school at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY. In 1996, he joined North Carolina Dance Theatre as artistic director and was named president in 2003. He and his wife, Patricia McBride, have added new works to NCDT’s repertoire, have attracted talent-ed dancers from all over the world, and champi-oned the effort to build a new facility for the com-pany. In June of 2010, NCDT opened the Patricia McBride & Jean–Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance.

RECORD OF EXCELLENCENYIBC is committed to excellence with a clear vision and a passion for delivering outstand-ing results. It attracts hiring artistic directors and choreographers who are confident that a dancer who has been mentored and trained at NYIBC can endure the rhythm of work and life in a ballet company. Since its inception in 1983, more than half the participating dancers have gone on to successful careers with leading

companies in the United States and abroad, including: American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Paris Opera Bal-let, National Ballet of Canada, Royal Danish Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Shanghai Ballet, Miami City Ballet, The Royal Winnipeg Bal-let, Boston Ballet, Washington Ballet and Ballet Estable del Teatro Colón among many others.

In 2011, NYIBC celebrates twenty–seven years of providing exceptional education, training, mentor-ing, career advancement, performance and employment opportunities through full scholarships to nearly 500 talented young dancers from all over the world.

WHAT SETS US APARTNew York International Ballet Competition (NYIBC) is a three–week intensive professional training, performance and artistic education program for forty–eight talented young dancers from countries around the world, all of whom receive full scholarships. NYIBC nurtures prom-ising dancers aged 17 to 24 from all ethnicities, regardless of their socio–economic status, pro-

viding them with an exceptional opportunity to completely focus on training to perform at their highest artistic level. The repertory is announced upon the arrival of the dancers in New York. The contemporary duet form and the classical pas de deux are the core of the repertory that NYIBC participants learn from world–renowned coaches under high standards of fairness.

HOW WE DO WHAT WE DOThe first two weeks are devoted to technique classes and the teaching and coaching of the repertory. The participants perform for the public and the illustrious panel of judges in the third week of the program. Learning clas-sical and contemporary masterpieces from world–renowned coaches in such a short time

period, and performing them, provides the dancers with a real–life experience of what it means to work in a first–class ballet company. NYIBC provides an unparalleled professional training and artistic education these young dancers cannot find elsewhere.

Audiences delight in the unique format of the performances whereby the dancers perform the same choreographic version of the ballets chosen for each progressive round. They learn to differentiate and appreciate the artistic and cultural nuances every dancer brings to each piece. Balletomanes and theatergoers alike also

experience the dancers’ personal artistry and unique qualities when they perform their solos. The international jury, comprised of leading artistic figures from different countries, awards Gold, Silver and Bronze medals accompanied by monetary prizes. In addition, the jury gives awards for special artistic achievements.
