A Message from the PresidentDear Alumnae/i and Friends,

Welcome to Bryn Mawr’s 125th Anniversary Scholarship Gala.

We have gathered here tonight for many reasons: to honor our past, to look toward our future, and to enjoy the company of those who have been part of our Bryn Mawr journey. But one reason above all others brings us together tonight: to celebrate and to support the students of Bryn Mawr.

Every day at Bryn Mawr, I meet extraordinary young women: aspiring physicians who not only want to care for patients but also want to unlock the secrets of new cures; creative artists hoping to make their mark in music, drama, or fiction; and promising young scholars preparing for advanced study in fields ranging from archaeology to philosophy. What unites them, despite their diverse academic interests, is undying intellectual curiosity, and a passion for social change, whether in this country or around the globe.

Bryn Mawr attracts young women of great talent and merit from many different backgrounds. They make this a vibrant and diverse community. Our ability to enroll these students depends in large measure on the generosity of alumnae/i and friends like you. Nearly two-thirds of Bryn Mawr students depend upon scholarships and financial aid, and the demand grows every year.

For this reason, we are honoring our 125th anniversary by seeking to raise a minimum of $1.25 million in new scholarship funds. Your participation in tonight’s event is helping us to reach this goal. On behalf of the College and all its students, I thank you for celebrating our 125th anniversary by investing in the futures of our Bryn Mawr students.

A Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

Dear Gala Guests and Supporters,

Since 1885, promising young women have walked through Bryn Mawr’s archways to begin their studies. Four years later, they graduate and go on to make meaningful contributions in fields ranging from education to business, from biomedical research to community development. This year, we celebrate that 125-year tradition of extraordinary achievement.

We also celebrate the tradition of alumnae/i, parents, and friends who have made a Bryn Mawr education possible for thousands of students. Following the example set by our founder and first benefactor, Joseph Taylor, each generation has generously supported those that have followed. Tonight, we proudly continue that tradition in an elegant fashion.

On behalf of the College’s Board of Trustees, I thank you for your commitment to sustaining our students in this and future generations. Your generous gifts ensure access to the finest liberal arts education for the talented young women who will carry forward the Bryn Mawr tradition of achievement we celebrate tonight.

A Message from the Self Government Association President

Dear Bryn Mawr Alumnae/i and Friends,

If I were to describe the Bryn Mawr experience in one word, it would be “empowering.” The opportunities and resources Bryn Mawr offers its students empower us to reach for our dreams.

Every day, I am inspired and motivated by my peers, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i to succeed. The Bryn Mawr community challenges all students to take risks and discover new interests and goals. I am thankful to be a student at a college with a legacy of devotion to women’s education, grateful to be part of a supporting community, and proud to be Bryn Mawr.

I was excited to hear that alumnae/i and friends of the College are celebrating the history of Bryn Mawr and showing their support for current students by contributing to scholarships. Thank you so much. As a student who benefits from scholarships, I experience the difference it makes and know how meaningful each supporter is. You make the Bryn Mawr experience possible.

An International Hello Bryn Mawr welcomed an unprecedented number

of international students in the Class of 2014. More than a quarter of the class is composed of

international students.

Re-Opening of the Schwartz GymnasiumStudents, faculty, and staff gathered at an open house celebrating the opening of the newly remodeled Bern Schwartz Gymnasium on September 7, 2010. The renovation was made possible by the generous support of donors to the Smart Women, Strong Women campaign. The Gymnasium was formally rededicated as the Bern Schwartz Fitness and Athletic Center on November 6.

Happy Birthday, Bryn Mawr!Worlds to DiscoverThe College has displayed some of its most treasured pieces of artwork, cultural artifacts, rare books, and manuscripts in “Worlds to Discover: 125 Years of Collections at Bryn Mawr,” which runs from September 23 through May 28 in Canaday Library. Let Them Eat Cake Thomas takes the cake! Hundreds gathered

on Merion Green on September 23, 2010, to celebrate Bryn Mawr’s 125th birthday with an

architectural cake, in the shape of Thomas, baked by Baltimore’s Charm City Cakes, star of the

Food Network’s Ace of Cakes.

Heritage and HopeEducators, activists, and policymakers gathered for “Heritage and Hope: Women’s Education in a Global Context,” a conference held on campus from September 23–25 in honor of Bryn Mawr’s 125th anniversary. The conference examined issues of educational access, equity, and opportunity in secondary schools and universities in the United States and around the world. Speakers included President Jane McAuliffe and Nicholas Kristof, New York Times columnist, who closed the conference by urging participants to advance gender equality worldwide.

Hepburn Medal CeremonyThe College’s Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center presented the 2011 Katharine Hepburn Medal to Helene Gayle, president and chief executive officer of CARE, in honor of her efforts to fight global poverty and reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS. The ceremony was held on February 12 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

Trip to Bangladesh Bryn Mawr students Jomaira Salas ’13, Huipu Li ’13, and Madelyn Houser ’11 on a balcony in Chittagong, Bangladesh, where a delegation of Bryn Mawr students and faculty traveled to groundbreaking ceremonies for a permanent campus of the Asian University for Women (AUW) in early 2011. The group then returned to Dhaka for an international conference, sponsored by AUW, where they joined Bryn Mawr President Jane McAuliffe.
