WelcomeWelcome to the 102nd Family & Children’s Service anniversary celebration; an evening of greatfood, beautiful music and good friends - all Under a Tuscan Moon.

For more than a century, FCS has helped individuals and families who face daunting challengesevery day just to survive with the sense of dignity and quality of life that most of us take forgranted. Last year alone, FCS assisted more than 18,000 people through intervention services for neglected and exploited adults; home health and respite care for those needing assistance orfamilies seeking a way to care for a loved one at home; and financial management for those withmental and physical challenges. Our Medicare counselors helped seniors navigate the complexMedicare system and FCS deployed hundreds of youth and senior volunteers to dozens of localorganizations. And, of course, Operation Sleighbells, the program on which FCS was founded, continued to bring joy to well over 1,000 children in need during the holiday season.

FCS remains a life line and a reliable resource, bringing hope, compassion, and peace of mind tothose we serve during the most vulnerable times in their lives.

The powerful and direct impact FCS has on our community is made possible through the extraordinary support we receive from our donors and volunteers, many of whom have helpedcreate tonight’s event, are here this evening, and support FCS in many ways throughout the year.Tonight we are especially pleased to honor two long-standing volunteers: our dear friends B.J.Thompson and Lee Weber, and The Rumson Country Day School, whose community partnershipwith FCS has helped sustain us for more than a dozen years. We could not do it without themand we could not do it without you!

These are certainly challenging times and your support is needed and appreciated now more thanever. We are deeply grateful, and thank you, our Underwriters, Patrons, Journal advertisers andAuction donors for your outstanding generosity and dedication to the FCS mission. Thousandscount on us – thank you for allowing us to count on you.

Have a wonderful evening, or as they say in Tuscany, speriamo che avete una sera meravigliosa!

Lifetime Service AwardLavanche “Lee” Weber

Lee has devoted much of her life to Family & Children’s Service. For 47 yearsher commitment to FCS has remained steadfast and she is as dedicated to theFCS mission today as she was when she first began volunteering for the agency.

Married for nearly 56 years, Lee and her late husband Henry “Hank” Weberraised three children and have five grandchildren. While most of her personallife has been spent in Monmouth County, her impressive professional career wasspent in New York City, where she worked in the fashion industry with top de-signers, such as Donna Karan. As the co-founder of Teamworks Unlimited, aspecial events company, Lee coordinated many high profile fashion, business andnon-profit organization events, among them the American Foundation for Aids

Research and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. The professional experience and leadershipLee brought to FCS have been key to FCS’s fundraising efforts and board development.

Introduced to FCS by a friend, Lee was elected to the FCS Board of Directors on December 21,1964. She has, at one time or other, held nearly every board office, including board Presidentfrom 1987-1988, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Assistant Recording Secretary and Assistant Treasurer. Lee has chaired and served on numerous board committees and the annualGala committee, and was a charter member and president of the former Mid-Monmouth Auxiliary to FCS. For more than a dozen years she has been a member of the Navarumsunk Auxiliary and has served as its president.

Lee has had a powerful impact on FCS. Her devotion to the agency and its mission is unlimited, her contributions unending, and her enthusiasm and commitment have only grown over the pastfour decades. While Lee is often heard to say, “I’ve always felt that I got a lot more back than Igave,” we at FCS feel that she has given us more than she’ll ever know – and she has given it withher whole heart.

Almost as long as she can remember, B.J. Thompson has been involved with Family & Children’s Service. Starting as a teenager, when she helped her mother,Mary O. Smith, collect clothes and household items for the agency’s annual rummage sale, B.J. has been volunteering with the agency in one capacity or another. For the last 43 years, she has devoted her energy and passion to serving on the agency’s Board of Directors and today she remains one of our most committed and caring partners.

B.J. was married to her high school sweetheart, the late H. Ernest Thompson for47 years. Together they raised five children and ten grandchildren. A long time resident of Monmouth County, B.J. studied at Colby Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire and the Tobe-Coburn School of Fashion Careers in New York City. As ayoung professional, she lived at the Barbizon Hotel for Women, studying fashion merchandisingat some of the world’s most famous department stores. She landed her first job at the formerHahne’s Department store in Newark, where she worked her way up from section manager, to assistant manager, to buyer. She credits her early professional career with giving her the skills sheuses to recruit others to support FCS.

Introduced to FCS by her mother, a former FCS board member, B.J. was elected to the FCS boardin December of 1967. She has held nearly every board office, including board President from1989-1990. B.J. has chaired and served on every board committee and the annual Gala committee, and was a charter member of the Navarumsunk Auxiliary, of which she is still a member.

For B.J., FCS has been, and will continue to be, “her life’s passion.” For more than four decades, she has brought her enthusiasm, energy and compassion to the agency and the people it serves. She is the embodiment of volunteerism and what it means to inspire by example. Her legacy atFCS is one of which she can be proud, and we offer her our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for allshe has done, and continues to do, for FCS.

The Rumson Country Day School has been one of Family& Children’s Service’s longest standing and most valuedcommunity partners.

It is a partnership that continues to make an enormous difference to the countless individuals and families weserve throughout Monmouth County. Without this help, carrying out our mission would be a daunting, if not impossible challenge.

The former FCS Emergency Food Pantry, which wasopened in 1969, received countless donations of both food and funds from the RCDS community, helping provide for more than 114,000 families during the pantry’s 38 years in existence. The FCSThrift Boutique, located on Branchport Avenue in Long Branch has, for many years, been the resid-ual beneficiary of RCDS’s annual Whale of a Sale, receiving donations of clothing, furniture, house-hold items and other essentials for our neighbors in need.

For more than a dozen years, RCDS students, with the support of parents, school faculty and administration, have collected an untold number of toys, games, clothing, winter coats and booksfor FCS’s annual Operation Sleighbells. The school’s practice has been to take one Giving Tree tag (which lists the gift wishes for one local child) for every student enrolled at RCDS each year.RCDS students then shop for their Giving Tree gifts and, with their parents, personally deliverthem to Operation Sleighbells headquarters in time for the holiday distribution.

In 2010 alone, students fulfilled the holiday wishes of over 450 children -- easily 20% of all thegifts donated to Operation Sleighbells last year. Since 1999 RCDS has donated more than 5,500gifts to Operation Sleighbells, directly benefitting thousands of local children who would have received few if any gifts at all during the holiday season.

RCDS’s generosity has been and continues to be an incredible demonstration of community spirit. The real importance of this partnership can be seen not only in the lessons it teaches students about the value of giving and volunteering, but also in the philanthropic example it sets for others to follow.

COUNTLESS PEOPLE COUNT ON USA Salute to the Programs of Family & Children’s Service

Adult Protective ServicesWell before it was federally mandated, Family & Children’s Service was providing Adult Protective

Services to those in need in Monmouth County. Working with community partners, our social

workers investigate allegations of abuse, neglect and exploitation of vulnerable adults and identify

solutions that improve their quality of life. For people like Joe, a developmentally disabled adult

living on his own, APS is not only a lifesaver, it is also a lifeline to other much-needed services.

Joe was in danger of having his utilities shut off and being forcibly evicted from his apartment for

failure to pay his bills. When the case was referred to APS, our social workers quickly discovered

that Joe’s designated Representative Payee was financially exploiting him, using Joe’s money to

pay for his own expenses. APS contacted the appropriate authorities, helped Joe change his

Rep Payee to FCS and referred him to other support systems to keep him at home

and safe. It’s one of the countless ways vulnerable adults have come to count on us.

KIDS CorpsNot many high school juniors know exactly what they want to be when they grow up, but after

volunteering at the Courthouse of the Monmouth Vicinage for the past two years, 16-year-old

Angela Cifelli says she is certain she wants to be a prosecutor. Angela and 30 other student

volunteers spent four weeks this summer observing court cases, archiving documents and

interviewing lawyers and judges to gain a better understanding of the law. The Monmouth Vicinage

is one of 74 local non-profit supported by Family & Children’s Service’s KIDS Corps, a volunteer

services program that places students in age-appropriate volunteer positions throughout Monmouth

County, empowering them to make a difference in their community. In Angela’s case, the experience

was life-altering. “I loved it!” Angela exclaims. “I only hope I can do it again next year.”

Operation SleighbellsFor more than a century, Operation Sleighbells has been granting the holiday wishes of thousands

of Monmouth County children, providing new toys, books and clothing to families who would

otherwise go without. It is a community effort that relies on the goodwill and generosity of our

extraordinary friends and neighbors including Monmouth Medical Center (MMC). Last year,

MMC donated space on its Long Branch campus, providing a safe, heated environment to sort,

pack and distribute the nearly ten tons of donated items. “It is part of the vision for Monmouth

Medical Center to be a leader in forming collaborative relationships with other providers in

service to our community,” says Frank J. Vozos, M.D., Executive Director of Monmouth Medical

Center. “By working with FCS in support of Operation Sleighbells, we are meeting this goal.”

Reading BuddiesEvery Friday for the past five years, Doris Mahoney has traveled to the Red Bank Primary School

to read aloud to a small group of first-graders. She is one of nearly 200 volunteers currently

participating in FCS’s Reading Buddies program, a weekly intergenerational shared reading

program implemented by the agency’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Reading Buddies

currently operates in 17 public elementary schools throughout Monmouth County. Sharing a

passion for books and love of reading, Reading Buddy volunteers help foster literacy skills and

build confidence in their beginner readers. The students are not the only ones to benefit from the

experience. “The children are so receptive. They hang on to my every word,” Doris says. “When

you are retired, it’s a nice feeling to have the children so excited to see you!”

Representative Payee ProgramFor people like Paralee, the Representative Payee Program has been a pathway to a more

productive life. A 63-year-old former drug addict who is HIV-positive, Paralee used to spend

her days living on the streets, using what little money she had to purchase drugs. Following

extensive rehabilitation, she was moved into a residential treatment facility where she was

referred to Family & Children’s Service’s Rep Payee program, a program which manages the

finances of individuals who are not able to do so due to physical or mental limitations. Today, Rep

Payee serves more than 350 clients, many of whom would be homeless without the service. By

turning over the management of her finances to FCS, Paralee gained some control of her life. She

successfully navigated the residential treatment program and eventually transitioned into her own

apartment. In fact, this June, Paralee’s building’s Tenants’ Association elected her their president.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

85-year-old Mary Jane Sharpe has never been one to slow down. A former sky diver, Mary Jane is

now legally blind, but that doesn’t stop her from volunteering weekly at the CentraState Hospital

Thrift Shop, stocking shelves and assisting customers with their purchases. In 2010, she

volunteered more than 5,000 hours of her time through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program

(RSVP), the country’s largest volunteer program for people age 55 and older. “Jane’s positive

attitude toward life is an inspiration to her volunteer family,” says CentraState Thrift Shop

manager Dorothy Peterson. RSVP volunteers can be found donating their skills and services to

more than 42 Monmouth County non-profits, from hospitals to food pantries, contributing more

than 55,000 hours in 2010. Calculated in real dollars, their time adds up to $1.5 million, but in

times of economic uncertainty, their contributions are priceless.

State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)

Area seniors who need help navigating the complex maze of Medicare have a valuable ally in

Mike Power. The 64-year-old retired corrections official and licensed social worker is somewhat

of an expert on Medicare issues. As one of only 18 trained Senior Health Insurance Assistance

Program (SHIP) counselors in Monmouth County, Mike volunteers ten to 15 hours a week at the

Family & Children’s Service Long Branch office, patiently counseling clients about everything

from enrollment to prescription drug benefit issues. Despite the long hours, Mike says he gets

more out of volunteering than he gives. “Being a SHIP volunteer is very satisfying,” Mike says.

“It’s a great feeling to help clients cut through the bureaucracy and get them benefits they may

not even know they are entitled to!”

Home Care ServicesWhen Wilhelmina Uhl needed a home health aide for her mother, Johanna, she chose a trusted

and reliable resource: Family & Children’s Service. At age 90, Johanna is maintaining her

independence at home with the assistance of her home health aide, Bonnie. “I am my mother’s

only child,” Wilhelmina says. “Having Bonnie takes a lot of the responsibility off my shoulders. It

allows me to spend more quality time with my mother, rather than doing chores for my mother.”

In addition to offering certified home health aide services for clients like Johanna, FCS provides

supportive care aides (companions) in various settings. “I don’t know what we would do without

our home health aide,” Wilhelmina says. “She’s a real blessing.”

Statewide Respite Care ProgramFor some time, Ocean township resident Felicita Rodriguez has been the sole full-time caregiver

for her 94-year-old uncle, Felix Santiago. It’s a labor of love for someone like Felicita, but poten-

tially physically and emotionally exhausting for the caregiver. Fortunately, Felicita found relief

through the Family & Children’s Service Statewide Respite Care Program, which provides respite

services for Monmouth County residents who are caring for elderly or disabled relatives or

friends. FCS helped Felicita obtain a grant to place her uncle in a Spanish-speaking adult day

program two days a week, giving her a much-needed break from her round-the-clock caregiver

duties. “I was one of the countless people who counted on Family & Children’s Service and they

came through for me,” Felicita says. “We will always have a special place in our hearts for FCS.”

The FCS Thrift BoutiqueWhen Regine Tallefsen’s 17-year-old daughter needed a dress for her high school senior prom, she

brought her to the annual Prom Boutique sponsored by the Family & Children’s Service Thrift

Boutique in Long Branch. There, her daughter was able to select from among hundreds of new

and nearly-new dresses, shoes, purses and accessories to create her perfect prom ensemble for

just $15. “My husband and I are out of work and currently living on unemployment,” Regine

told the helpful sales staff. “I don’t have to tell you how important this type of shop is for people

who need to stretch their budget.” The Prom Boutique is just one of the many ways the Thrift

Boutique responds to the changing needs of the community. From distributing clothing to families

displaced by fire, to donating materials to a summer recycling camp, the Boutique continues to be

a valued and trusted community resource. For Regine’s daughter, who donated her own gown for

next year’s event, it’s also an opportunity for her to give back.

home while recovering from illness or other medical conditions. Thanks to the Home Care Grants

Program, Johanna can count on getting the support she needs to keep living a full life.

AARP Foundation Money Management ProgramWhen macular degeneration began limiting Anna’s vision, her family grew concerned. At 85,

Anna valued her independence, but she was having trouble reading the mail and paying her bills.

Anna was referred to Family & Children’s Service’s Money Management Program which provides

assistance to seniors or disabled individuals who need help managing their finances. Working in

collaboration with the AARP Foundation, FCS connects volunteers with individuals who need

help paying their monthly bills, balancing their checkbooks and providing general money man-

agement assistance. Anna now receives monthly visits from volunteer Lisa Banwell. “This is a

Our predecessor, Mac Evans, President Emeritus, called Family & Children’s Service her magnificent obsession, and so it has been for us. Since we were youngwomen we have believed in the value of the many services FCS provides to the community.

Volunteerism has been a great source of satisfaction in our own lives, and is the basisfor the American ideal of commitment to others. The little known fact, though, isthat the volunteer receives far more in return for the experience. We are both so verygrateful to FCS for the richness and joy it has contributed to our lives.

Thank you Family & Children’s Service, from the bottom of our hearts.
