With the current vacancies available and the variety of support that the Employability Service can offer you for up to three years after you graduate there has never been a better time to start your graduate career in the health sector.

Getting your dream job, where do you start?Finding employment can be a complex process, even for those with the highest level of qualifications and reams of experience, jobs rarely come knocking at doors. Often graduate employment is accompanied by extra challenges associated with the level of competition and the high calibre of applicants. Recent reports suggest that the UK’s leading employers expect to recruit significantly more graduates in 2015 and are offering 8.7% more entry-level vacancies than last year – the biggest annual rise in graduate recruitment for four years (read the full report at www.highfliers.co.uk). Match this with the high quality of tuition provided by Plymouth University and the sheer hard work and determination you have put into your degree so far, and it’s clear that you are making excellent progress towards a rewarding graduate career in a health or social care profession.

Many of you will know exactly what type of graduate position you are heading for and may have very clear career plans laid out. Some may know the broader area you are heading into, mental health for example, but have not yet identified a precise role. Perhaps some of you are considering multiple opportunities, and prefer to keep your options open. Whichever group you fall into, there are some core things you can start to do which will help you to secure graduate employment.

Being clear about what careers may be available to youEven if you have settled on a specific role, it can be useful to see what other options are available to you. You may find that there are other careers that you didn’t know about which are similar to your desired option, which may allow you to broaden the number of opportunities you can apply to. Back up plans are always helpful. For those of you who are less focussed on exactly what you are going to do next, this type of research is critical. There are a multitude of online careers resources, but those specific to graduates and/or which link options to your degree subjects, such as www.prospects.ac.uk can be especially helpful.

Seeking VacanciesFor health and social care professions, vast numbers of opportunities are available through the NHS. Recruitment is through www.jobs.nhs.uk and the website includes a range of help pages around how to successfully apply, and also advice around their interview processes. The NHS careers website has a set of resources around life in the NHS, including case studies – www.nhscareers.nhs.uk. Many Trusts hold regular Open Days, this is your chance to meet and talk with people in the job role you are looking for. These events are a great networking opportunity to find out about their recruitment process and the opportunities they are looking to fill.

Outside of the NHS, there are other types of employers who can offer you graduate employment, including positions which are largely considered exclusive to the NHS such as nursing (employers might include cruise ships or international schools amongst others). Graduate opportunities can be based within small local organisations or large multinational companies with a vast number of employees. Alternatively you may wish to seek opportunities abroad, or even start up a business of your own. Plymouth University can help students wishing to start up a new business – find out more at www.bit.ly/1BXqdit The Employability Service also offers a searchable database of international employers at www.online.goinglobal.com

Graduate vacancies can be advertised in various ways, such as through local newspapers, job centres, via company websites or other web mediums, through graduate publications, through employment agencies or directly via the University. It will be beneficial to look in as many different places as possible to find something that’s right for you.

Be realistic about what you might find. With intense competition from other graduates, you may have to consider multiple tactics to get yourself moving in the right direction. Your first opportunity might not pay the £22000+ salary that you were expecting. It may not be exactly the position you wanted. It’s possible it won’t be in the location you wanted either and you might need to be prepared to take opportunities based outside of your local area. But it will be a foot in the door and a platform to step into the next opportunity, which could be the exact one you were hoping for.

Utilising your own networkThere is much talk around social networks in respect to social media, but the more traditional social network of those people you have personally encountered through various situations and experiences and those people that they in turn are personally linked with could help with finding a graduate position. Family, friends, neighbours, old work contacts, colleagues from placements or other types of experience might be able to offer you insights into your future career options, or even link you up with potential graduate employers. Start by considering the following questions to help you identify who might be available to help you;

1. If you look back over the last two to three years, who are the people with whom you have discussed important study or work matters? This may have been for bouncing around ideas for important projects, getting support or cooperation for your initiatives, evaluating opportunities, or any other matters of importance to you.

2. What people have been most helpful and useful in accomplishing your goals, in a work, education, or volunteer setting? Consider people who have provided leads, made introductions, offered advice in your decision making, or provided resources.

3. Who do you know who works within the health and social care sector? Who might you know who knows someone already employed in this industry? Remember, just because they are not in the specific vocational area you are interested in, doesn’t mean they won’t have useful support to offer you.

Once you have identified a potentially useful network, don’t be shy about asking for help and advice with your journey into graduate employment. Most people will be hugely flattered to be asked and very willing to provide you with help and support.

Some uses of the internet in graduate job seekingThe internet can be an invaluable resource for final year students who are starting the journey into employment. Make sure you understand exactly what is required for the role you are interested in by carefully reading the job description AND person specification, highlighting the skills and experiences required. You can also find very detailed descriptions of health and social care roles at www.nhscareers.nhs.uk which will provide you with further understanding. Once you have a very clear idea of the expectations, you can start to consider how your own skills and qualities can be matched to them and if you identify any gaps, you can start to think about how you might develop those missing skills.

Many health and social care employers have their own websites where you can find out more about a company. Employers will expect you to have done this type of research before an application or interview to ensure that you understand exactly what the goals and aims of the company are, and how they operate. This research also demonstrates your enthusiasm and commitment to the post, and that you have considered whether you are a suitable addition to that company. Social media can also be used for this type of research - Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn can give insight into a company’s values, culture, history and future plans, and can even give you an opportunity to open an online dialogue with them prior to your application or interview, which can be very effective provided it is done professionally. Understanding these aspects of a graduate recruiter can provide you with key themes to match your application to as well as give you an idea of what types of questions might come up at interview. If a company is pitching itself as innovative and forward thinking, it’s highly likely they will ask you about examples of where you have used innovation and demonstrated progressive actions within your placement or during your course.

Page 6: Nursing & Health Recruitment Brochure 2015

Presenting your skillsPlacements, volunteering or work experience will have provided you with a treasure trove of skills to impress employers with. Even if your experience is minimal, employers will value skills developed through hobbies, part time employment, projects you’ve been involved in or membership of societies. The most important thing is not where you acquired the skills, but how you present them to an employer. The STAR technique is a great method to help you to structure your illustrations of skills, by including -

You can use this technique within applications and any interview or assessment methods. To use the technique in the most effective manner, prepare beforehand, by recalling a number of experiences which perhaps you have found challenging, or particularly satisfying and practice describing them using STAR. Write them down and practice them. A pre-prepared broad selection of key experiences planned out using STAR will serve to illustrate most competence-based questions within an application or interview process.

Don’t forget that many jobs are not openly advertised and are found by applicants speculatively approaching employers to ask for a position. This needs to be a targeted approach which is tailored specifically to an organisation - a scattergun approach of firing off CVs to multiple employers is rarely fruitful. The library at Plymouth University contains several databases to help you identify potential employers to approach in this way, such as Keynote Market Reports, Morningstar Company Intelligence and Marketline Advantage.

Situation: Open with a brief description of the Situation and context of the story (who, what, where, when, how).

Task: Explain the Task you had to complete highlighting any specific challenges or constraint (e.g. deadlines, costs, other issues).

Action: Describe the specific Actions that you took to complete the task. These should highlight desirable traits without needing to state them (initiative, intelligence, dedication, leadership, understanding, etc.)

Result: Close with the Result of your efforts. Include figures to quantify the result if possible.

Northern Devon Healthcare Trust

Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust operates across 1,300 square miles, providing care for people from Axminster to Bude and from Exmouth to Lynton.

The Trust offers both acute services, centred on North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) and adult community services, across a network of 17 community hospitals and nine integrated health and social care community clusters, spanning Torridge, North Devon, East Devon, Exeter, Mid Devon, Teignbridge and West Devon.

The North Devon District Hospital provides a full complement of secondary care services including diagnostics, treatment and follow-up care, along with A&E, cancer care, orthopaedic surgery, paediatric care and maternity services.

Working across acute and community settings are the specialist services such as podiatry, musculoskeletal, audiology and ophthalmology. These services are organised in discrete pathways and are commissioned separately.

Community services can be divided into inpatient nursing and therapies at the community hospitals run by this Trust and the complex care teams, which consist of multidisciplinary teams with district nursing and social workers. In addition to inpatient care, some of the community hospitals offer a Minor Injury Unit and stroke rehabilitation. Community-based and specialist staff also work from GP surgeries, other local bases and, increasingly, in people’s own homes.
