    Blessed will they be

Memory of the Assassination of our Confrere, Nicholas Van Kleef (Nico)

On the morning of 7 May 1989, the day on which the presiden-tial election was held in Panama, a few meters from Saint Mar-thas Church in the Bugaba district, an agent of the DefenseForces pulled the trigger fatally injuring Van Kleef, who, be-cause of a traffic accident suffered in Veraguas, was in wheel-chair. In spite of that, he had actively continued his missionarylabor.

Father Nico was accustomed to traverse the village using a

loudspeaker to inform the people that Mass was about to begin, but in spite of having requested permission from the heads ofthe former Defense Forces in La Concepcin for this, a con-fused policeman thinking that he was calling the people to sabo-tage the elections, and at the same time not wanting the priest todo his work, approached the car in which he was travelling and

putting the weapon to his head did not hesitate to commit one ofthe most despicable crimes against a man whose emphasis inlife was on loving God and struggling for peace.

    Chronicle of a Beatification

In Matthews gospel, Jesus makes it clear that the pursuit of theKingdom has its risks, but also a big reward, a life of constant hap-

piness. That is what happened to Marguerite Rutan. Her consistentwitness to Jesus Christ and his cause led her to give her life, receiv-ing the palm of martyrdom, but with it also full life in God. Be-cause of that, today we call her Blessed.

Marguerite Rutan, Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, was martyred on 9 April 1794 in Dax, France.

Sister Rutans beatification took place in Dax, France and differentactivities were carried out around this celebration, which had somuch meaning for the Vincentian Family. The majority of thosewho came from other places gathered on Friday. On that day therewas a pilgrimage to the places where Marguerite was before her

martyrdom, concluding with a play on Rutans life and a well enter-tained dinner at the Berceau.

Every year, the confreres and other associations of the Vincentian Family, as well as parishioners of the parishesneighboring that of Saint Martha, meet to celebrate the faithful witness of Father Nico (as he was affectionatelycalled).

by the Bishop of Dax, Monsignor Philippe Breton.

Highlighting some historical information about Sister Rutansmartyrdom. (Source: Father Marlio, C.M.)

An archival document announced that, in December 1793, a delegation ofthe Company of Daxs popular commune presented a claim before themonitoring committee against the superior of Daxs hospital, giving severalaccusations in opposition to the renewed law. Immediately after the com-

plaint, the committee considered that the accused merited prison, the arrestwarrant was established, in such a way that at the end of the year, it would

be communicated to the representatives of the people, the department, thedistrict board, the municipality, and the popular commune.

On 3 March 1794, 11 other Daughters of Charity from the hos-pital also were imprisoned because they were indicated as aris-tocrats, fanatics, and superstitious persons. When Sister Mar-guerite was in jail, she was accused by a soldier who presentedagainst her other charges in violation of the law. She was sub-mitted to a first interrogation on 15 January 1794.

Sister Marguerite was put in jail on 24 December 1793, togetherwith 54 other women in the Carmelite convent, which had beentransformed into a womens jail, whereas the men were de-

tained in the former Capuchin monastery.

Sister Rutan was kept in total isolation in the jail and was sub-mitted to a type of judicial interrogation, at which she was notallowed to defend herself from the accusations. At the end ofthe interrogation the judges issued the sentence, which wascarried out the same day. It was 9 April 1794.

May the example of men and women like Sister Mar-

guerite continue to inspire the Vincentian Family todayfor a greater commitment with Jesus Christ in the poor.

She was buried in one of the ditches, which were excavated from oneday to the next, in an area adjacent to the former Capuchin convent dueto the great number of those condemned to the guillotine

On 28 March 1794, a search of her cell was ordered and car-ried out, where they found pamphlets and articles, which, in

the opinion of the revolutionaries, were proof of her anti-republican and uncivil spirit, and her participation against therevolution.

Sister Marguerite was chained with her hands behind her back togetherwith a priest. They went as one in a wagon passing through the citystreets as far as the square where the guillotine had been set up. Therewere many witnesses to these deaths. The priest was executed first andthen the sister.
