I am speaking of a very large African country, with arare, unique beauty and potentially one of the rich-

est in the world: the Democratic Republic of the Con-go (RDC). It is not the irst time that I visited it. Iwas there in 1994, on the occasion of the foundationof COVIAM. At that time the nation was in MobutuSese Sekos hand. He was already elderly and sickand unable to govern the nation. I had the sensationof seeing a nation without leader.

Eighteen years later, in spite of having a young presi-dent, I simply conirm my irst impression: the entireRDC appears to be in the hands of no one. It seems

that the one commanding is the irst one who awak-ens, and not the constitution that regulates and dis-ciplines the public life of the nation. Corruption hastaken over everything. How much will you giveme? spoken loudly, seems to be the principal rule ofthis beautiful country. But what probably surprisedme more negatively is that I have the impressionthat the Congolese, in general, appear very passiveand permissive. It seems that they do not seek any-thing else but to adapt to the situation. With this at-titude they contribute to the structural evil. Obvi-

ously I am speaking of my particular impression. Therefore the responsibility for what I say is allmine, no one has told me. From what I see, it is myopinion.

Besides this, I must say that I loved the uniqubeauty of this nation. After 18 years one does nsee any progress in the country. It is sad! Thtime, thanks to the Visitor, I made a trip on thCongo River from Bikoro to Maluku. What I coered in two days was a small distance with rgard to the size of this river.

The Congo River, I am calling it a river becauthere is no another term, but I must say that it a sea in movement. What is more surprising

not the length and the breadth, the depth, or thquantity of water that lows, but the naturbeauty that surrounds it. It is truly beautiful; itno exaggeration to say that it is a paradise oearth. Be it upstream or downstream, one selarge craft transporting people or merchandisYet amid this beauty, nothing is offered to touists. During the trip I made, I did not see any retaurant or hotel or place for them. It is a shambecause this area really would offer a space peace, of serenity, and, at the same time, revenu

    for the country.

The irst thing I will say is that the Vincentian Familyin the Congo is lourishing. It is probably one of theAfrican nations with the most branches. Present inthe Congo are nearly 17 branches of our Family. Most of them have their national ofices in Kinshasa, thanks to the generosity of the CM Province of theCongo, because it has dedicated a house especiallyfor this. It is an historical gesture that demonstratesthe interest and responsibility that this provincefeels in relationship with other branches of the Vin-centian Family. The interest and responsibility ofthis province are not limited to giving a building tothe Vincentian Family, but it also has a Commissionfor the Vincentian Family, which works very well, ensuring that this other building, which is the heartof the Vincentian Family, functions properly.

Challenges of the Vincentian Family in the Congo.Formation. It is one of the principal challenges of theVincentian Family in the Congo. The VincentianFamily is conscious of this need. It must obtain for-mation material.

In addition, the building and documents suffered ex-tensive damage in the powerful storm that occurredin Kinshasa in November 2012.

Teresa Nyawira was only a few months oldwhen her mother took her with her to the ieldwhere she was working. Like many Africawomen, when working in the ield, she left heasleep in the shade of a leafy tree. Suddenly hemother realized that she was no longer thereDriven to despair she searched everywhere. Aat once, she saw that her daughter was in hand

of an ape overhead in the tree. Her fear wagreater.

How would she get her daughter down? In thmidst of the desperation, she ran looking foher husband. He came rapidly and, on seeinthe situation, thought: If I throw something athe ape, there is a risk that it might drop the girand she surely would die falling from thaheight. The girls father thought quickly anran looking for some bananas. On returning, h

placed the bananas near the tree and movedaway. The ape came down from the tree witthe girl, left her on the ground, took the bananas, and climbed the tree. The parents ran toward their healthy and safe daughter. TodaSister Teresa Nyawira is a Daughter of CharityIf all humanity was saved by the cross of JesusSister Teresa has one more thing: bananasthanks to which today the Daughters of Charityenjoy her presence.

In this month of January, there has been major lood-ing in the southern region of Mozambique, which sofar has affected about 70 thousand people and hascaused the death of 38 persons in Gaza. The increas-ing low of the Limpopo River caused loods in sever-al districts of the province of Gaza, with the loods inChokw, Barragem, and Guij, where the Daughtersof Charity and the confreres of the Vice-Provinceserve, being the worst. The question now before us, like a

tidal wave around us, is not a matter

of people nor a question of political

forms, but a social problem; ... it is

the struggle of those who have

nothing and those who have too

    much

CEVIM organized a meeting of confreres from the Prov-inces of Europe and the Orient at the Alberoni College. The relection topic for this meeting was: The Transmis-sion of the Faith. This topic was chosen in conformitywith the Year of Faith in progress.

During the confreres relections and exchange theydelved more deeply into the European environment re-garding the announcement of the Faith. Europe seems tobe lost and with little historical memory. It behaves as ifsomeone has cut its inheritance. It is a silent apostasy, which leaves it without identity. In this situation theChurch has the mission to transmit to this society the val-ues that are its own: truth, faith, hope, charity.

The anthropological and ecclesiological aspects of the an-nouncement of the faith are addressed from the perspec-tive of the new evangelization, as also are our services inthe Vincentian tradition: formation of the clergy, popularmissions, interreligious dialog, ecumenical dialog, andthe charitable dimension of our charism that, renewedand reinvigorated, can be well inserted in the new evan-gelization as our speciic contribution.

Some 30 confreres and seminarians from the variousprovinces of Europe and the Orient participated in themeeting.
