Dear Parents and Carers Here we are, nearly at the end of Term 1. It certainly has gone fast. Special Assemblies It was wonderful to see so many parents attend our first special assemblies for 2016. So many children received our awards which now have a new format. They are tracked and printed by a software program designed by our technology guru, Mr McFarlane. We hope, over time, this will help when some children misplace their award when they need it for the next one. Disco Our first disco for the year was held this week, with the profits going to our R.A.T.S reader program in the school. This will be used to update the books. Thank you to all the staff who gave up their time for on Thursday. The children had a wonderful time. Cross Country Thanks to all the parents who came along to support our Cross County event. We are so lucky to have the support of Sean O'Brien so that our students get to really experience a cross country event not just a long distance run. The children all gave it their best and we will be sending along a very strong team to compete at Zone Cross Country next term. National Autism Awareness Day It was great to see so many students in their bright colours to support our own local association 'Strive'. The gold coin donations will be given to Strive who will use it to support local families who have students with autism. Easter Hat Parade Our Easter Hat parade was once again a wonderful event with so many of our students participating. It was fantastic to see so many of our senior students getting into the spirit of the event. Our leaders did a fantastic job running the parade and our sound technicians were fantastic with their choice of music for the students to walk to. Our Easter raffle was a great success thanks to the wonderful donations by parents. School Fair What an amazing event this was. The weather was perfect, the rides fun, the stalls were busy, the chocolate wheel prizes were awesome and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. Over $14000 was raised to support projects for the school. Thanks to all the parents who helped on all the stalls, the staff who spent the day helping out on their stalls, the P&C fundraising committee and all the parents, students and friends who came on the day. Well done. New Assistant Principal I have great pleasure in announcing that Mrs Petrysen has been successful in gaining the vacant permanent Assistant Principal position at Nulkaba Public School. Dear Parents and Carers

Here we are, nearly at the end of Term 1. It certainly has gone fast.

Special Assemblies

It was wonderful to see so many parents attend our first special assemblies for 2016. So many children received our awards which now have a new format. They are tracked and printed by a software program designed by our technology guru, Mr McFarlane. We hope, over time, this will help when some children misplace their award when they need it for the next one.

Disco

Our first disco for the year was held this week, with the profits going to our R.A.T.S reader program in the school. This will be used to update the books. Thank you to all the staff who gave up their time for on Thursday. The children had a wonderful time.

Cross Country

Thanks to all the parents who came along to support our Cross County event. We are so lucky to have the support of Sean O'Brien so that our students get to really experience a cross country event not just a long distance run. The children all gave it their best and we will be sending along a very strong team to compete at Zone Cross Country next term.

National Autism Awareness Day

It was great to see so many students in their bright colours to support our own local association 'Strive'. The gold coin donations will be given to Strive who will use it to support local families who have students with autism.

Easter Hat Parade

Our Easter Hat parade was once again a wonderful event with so many of our students participating. It was fantastic to see so many of our senior students getting into the spirit of the event. Our leaders did a fantastic job running the parade and our sound technicians were fantastic with their choice of music for the students to walk to. Our Easter raffle was a great success thanks to the wonderful donations by parents.

School Fair

What an amazing event this was. Well done.

New Assistant Principal

I have great pleasure in announcing that Mrs Petrysen has been successful in gaining the vacant permanent Assistant Principal position at Nulkaba Public School.

2H

I would like to thank Miss Halverson for the wonderful work she has done with 2H this term. Unfortunately she will not be able to continue in this position for the remainder of the year. In accordance with the DoE's staffing procedures this position will be filled by the end of the term and a new teacher will begin at the start of Term 2. I hope you all enjoyed your short Easter Break and have a wonderful holiday at the end of this term. School finishes on 8th April and commences again for all students on Wednesday 27th April. As always we will be marching in the local Anzac Day March which will be held on 25th April. We will meet outside Peden's at 10.45am in school uniform.

Class 3/4B

What a term 3/4B have had so far. We have been busy setting goals and working hard to reach them. We have enjoyed our AL text ‘27th Annual African Hippopotamus Race’ and have created some amazing art works. We have had quite a few personal achievements and have decided to celebrate these each term with you. Aubrey B and Natalie are our reps this term who have achieved some outstanding results in trampoline and show jumping. Natalie went to Mount Sugarloaf Pony Club showing jumping competition riding her horse Dudley. She achieved some outstanding results, receiving 2 second place ribbons on her first day of competition and 2 third ribbons on her second day of competition. Natalie placed third overall, competing against 24 other riders. What an amazing achievement, congratulations Natalie. Aubrey attended his first ever State Elite trampoline competition this term and did an incredible job. It was the 2nd State Elite NSW team trial for the National Championships, under 11 year’s boys team. In Aubrey’s words:

“It was very nerve racking!, but I did qualify for the NSW team to compete in Melbourne, at the Australian Gymnastics Championships. Not bad for an 8 year old, competing in the under 11years! The trampoline was different to the one I train on. I train on a Chinese trampoline, but the one I competed on was a Euro Trampoline which is made in Germany. The Euro is more bouncer! Aubrey’s next competition is on Saturday 10 April, it will be the Elite State Championships, which I’m sure he will do his best, and hopefully bring home a State medal. Good Look Aubrey!

Genius Hour

3/4B has been involved with Genius Hour, a new adventure for us all! During Genius Hour each student is focused on their own learning and developing their knowledge and understanding of a high interest topic of their choice. Students worked hard to develop an inquiry question and planned their research around the topic. Each student is then responsible for presenting their information to the rest of the class and talk about their new learning. We hope to continue Genius Hour in Term 2, and have an open day for family and friends to see and experience all of the amazing products the students have made. These are just a few examples of the types of enquiry based questions the students came up with themselves. How to make a guitar? What are the top 5 mysteries in the world? Why is heavy metal and rock n roll so angry and aggressive? Why giraffe’s are necks so long? What skills do I need to write a song? What is in the centre of the Earth? How are black holes made?... Amazing I know!

Class 5/6P

What a wonderful and busy term 5/6P have had. It has been a fantastic start to the school year with lots of events and learning taking place. One of the new and exciting programs in our classroom is 'Genius Hour'. This is a student led inquiry based program, where the children choose topics of interest to them. After developing an inquiry question students are given an hour a week to undertake the required research to answer their question. They then have to create a product showing their findings and present to the class. This week we began our class presentations and I am very impressed! Some examples include: Saraya - How do I make a checkerboard cake? Catarina - What is the history of gymnastics? Emily - How has the Disney myth changed over time? Abbey - Can you teach a dingo tricks? Zac - How do I make an iMovie?

Arabella - How do I make a chocolate molten cake? Chloe - How do I knit a blanket? Cooper - What are the top 5 charities? Demi - How to choreograph my own Jazz dance?

Presentations so far have included PowerPoint slideshows, videos, dance routines, cake testing and real live animal shows. We can't wait to see the rest of our class presentations!

Premier’s Reading Challenge

A great start has certainly been made this year with already some 60 students having completed their entries, with

many other students close to finishing – and it’s only the end of March! It is fabulous to see our senior students leading

the way with 5/6M now being the very first class to have every student finished – Congratulations to 5/6M and Miss

McCallum for her support and encouragement. This week we can congratulate the following individual students: Tayah

K, Phoebe P, Kiara W and Natalie S from 3/4B; Charlie P, Olivia H, Anita P, Yousef J and Isaac O from 5/6M; May W,

Cooper W, Angus M, Edan M, Grace F, Henry M and Zac B from 5/6P – well done everyone – you are setting a great

example for the rest of the school.

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence was held on Friday, 18 March 2016. All students were

encouraged to 'take a stand together' against bullying and violence in schools, the classroom and beyond.

3/4B and 3/4S students help deliver a powerful message that bullying and violence is never okay.
