2010 ANNUAL REPORT p. 3

2010 President’s Review This year we have been privileged to be part of three very special Olympic events. Of these, The Australian Team efforts – the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, and the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore, provided outstanding results for NSW athletes, and continuing justification of our role in supporting their efforts. The 2010 Winter Games proved to be the most successful Australian effort to date, overall winning two gold medals, one silver medal and nine athletes scoring top ten finishes. The YOG saw 100 Australian athletes, aged 14 – 18 yrs, competing in 20 of the 26 sports on the 2012 London Olympic Games program, winning a total of 8 gold/15 silver/ 9 bronze medals. The exciting, modified YOG competition format incorporated an education component, and provided a valuable step for our young athletes in their journey towards Olympic Games representation in the future. Congratulations to all team members for providing another significant chapter to our Olympic history. On July 27, 2010, the NSW Premier, The Hon. Kristina Keneally MP, launched our Fundraising Appeal for London 2012 with a generous donation of $500,000. We sincerely thank the NSW Government for their support and affirmation of the valuable role our Olympians play in creating a strong community ethos and national pride. The Fundraising Committee, under the Chairmanship of John Conde AO, have once more been inspired to better their previous efforts, in the countdown to London. Their planning for the 2011 Appeal Dinner is well advanced, and their interest and enthusiasm high. Your Executive Committee also made the decision to donate $50,000 to the London Team Appeal, being derived from distributions from our investments. On 15 September, 2010 the 10th Anniversary of the Sydney Olympic Games was celebrated at Sydney Olympic Park. Commencing with a NSW Fundraising Breakfast in the city, the activity quickly moved to the main stadium for a re-enactment of the Olympic Opening Ceremony in the presence of hundreds of schoolchildren, Olympians and volunteers. This was followed up by an Olympic sports fest for the students and a Reunion Barbeque for all the volunteers. Special plagues were unveiled, the cauldron was re-lit and the Olympians celebrated “the best Games ever” at a special Olympians Club Dinner in the main stadium. As well as determining our fundraising timeline in the countdown to London 2012, the focus over the past twelve months has concentrated on creating an awareness of the Olympic Movement within the broader community, and the educational opportunities which that provided. To this end we have achieved outstanding results in reaching a record level of Pierre de Coubertin Award recipients, as well as involving Olympians in our activities, and I commend to you the reports which follow. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the AOC and Communities NSW -Sport & Recreation. The close working relationship we enjoy with both organisations provides the framework for supporting NSW Sport at all levels, and enables us to achieve so much. In addition, the commitment of our member sports in organising exemplary programs across the state is a credit to your respective organisations and the large number of volunteers who give so freely of their time to assist in program delivery. Sadly, we farewelled our colleague, Michael Mercer, AOC Director, Corporate Services who passed away early in the year. Michael was an unwavering supporter of our activities, a wise counsel on many occasions, and a loyal friend. He is truly missed by all.

Helen Brownlee OAM: 20 Years NSWOC President Congratulations to Helen Brownlee OAM for her twenty years service as President of the NSW Olympic Council. Helen was elected as the first woman President in 1990 having previously held the position of Vice President 1989-1990 and Executive Member 1988-1989. Helen was made a Delegate to the NSWOC in 1974. In 1991 Helen was also elected as the first woman onto the Executive Board of the Australian Olympic Committee. Two decades later, Helen retains her positions as President, NSWOC and Executive Member, AOC. Helen has shown an unstinting dedication to the Olympic Movement on an international scale with her involvement in IOC Commissions, within Australia and especially in NSW. Over the past twenty years Helen has played an integral role in promoting the Olympic Movement’s ideals, particularly in Olympic Education and encouraging women in sport. Helen is regarded as an international expert in both fields, often requested at conferences for the IOC Commission for Culture & Olympic Education and the International Olympic Academy. As President of NSWOC, Helen has overseen a myriad of programs over the years. Importantly, this has included the successful fundraising campaigns run in NSW for Australian Olympic Teams since Barcelona 1992 and currently for London 2012. Helen is an evergreen in the Olympic Movement - she is highly respected by her colleagues who universally enjoy working with her. Her friendly yet steadfast approach to business has won her many friends and achieved a staggering amount of accomplishments for athletes in NSW, Australia, and Oceania, for women in sport throughout the world, and in Olympic education. Helen has been involved in white water canoeing for over fifty years. She began competing as a teenager and has won white water medals at state, national and international levels. Throughout these years Helen also fulfilled roles as Assistant Team Manager for World Championships, Jury Member at international slalom races as well as being Chief Judge at Australian and State level. In 1985, Helen was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to the sport of canoeing. In the lead up to Sydney 2000, Helen was instrumental in successfully lobbying SOCOG and the Minister for the Olympics to have the White Water Canoeing venue built - and to include White Water Canoeing on the sports program. She then officiated at the White Water venue during Sydney 2000. In Helen’s profession as a teacher she was entrusted with many leadership roles, highlighted by the position of State Manager, School Sports Unit where she pioneered the development of Olympic Education programs involving some 750,000 students from 2,500 schools in the lead up to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Amongst an outstanding career in her lifetime of dedication to the Olympic Movement, Canoeing and Women in Sport, Helen has a seemingly limitless capacity to taking on roles - the great majority as a volunteer - and she achieved an exceptional list of accolades.

2010 Olympic Winter Games, Vancouver 12 - 28 February 2010

The 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver were Australia’s most successful in history. The 40 member Team achieved three Olympic medals: Silver to Dale Begg-Smith in freestyle moguls (to add to his Gold Medal in the same event in Torino 2006), a Gold Medal to Cooma’s Torah Bright winning the women’s half pipe, and a Gold Medal to Lydia Lassila in the women’s freestyle aerials. In all, our athletes achieved nine top-ten performances. NSW contributed nineteen of the forty Olympians comprising the Team (equal to the size of the Torino 2006 Team - and both the largest ever sent to a Winter Games). The 2010 Team was also the first Australian Olympic Team, Summer or Winter, with gender equity of 50% male and female competitors. Vancouver produced an exceptional Winter Olympic Games, and with the support of thousands of local Australian’s (especially in Whistler) it was an incredible experience for our Australian athletes. Our 2010 Team was relatively young, and many Olympians have their sights set on the next Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014. Since the Vancouver Games, two Team members have become World Champions: Holly Crawford (NSW) in the women’s half pipe, and Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullen in the men’s boarder cross. Jenny Owens, dual Olympian from 2002 Salt Lake City (Alpine) and Vancouver 2010 (Skier cross) - and who is still placing on the podium in the World Cup series in 2010 - 2011 - is a member of the AOC’s Athlete’s Commission. 2010 Youth Olympic Games, Singapore 2010 saw the first Youth Olympic Games take place in Singapore. A new initiative of the IOC, the 2010 Australian Youth Olympic Team, led by Chef de Mission, Nick Green comprised 100 athletes and 35 officials. The young athletes achieved outstanding results winning 32 medals – 8 gold, 15 silver and 9 bronze. Of this, an incredible 23 medals were won by NSW athletes, 10 of which were gold. Apart from their competition, athletes were encouraged to attend the Culture and Education Program - the IOC’s initiative to promote Olympic Education and understand the Olympic Movements ideals - which was very well received by all attending. The NSWOC assisted the AOC by aiding the staging of the ‘Welcome Camp’ for the Australian Team at Sydney Olympic Park immediately prior to their departure for Singapore. Sydney 2000 10th Anniversary Celebrations 15 September 2010

On 15th September 2010 the Olympic Movement gathered again in Sydney to mark the 10th anniversary of the 2000 Olympic Games. The NSW Olympic Council played a leading role in delivering the event program together with the AOC and the event partners. The AOC, together with event partners: Australian Paralympic Committee, the NSW Government, Sydney Olympic Park Authority and the City of Sydney staged a full day of events in Sydney to re-kindle Olympic spirit. The AOC invited special guest to the Celebrations: Lord Sebastian Coe, Olympic Champion and Chairman London 2012, and the daughter of Juan Antonio Samaranch, Maria Therese Samaranch. Olympians, Paralympians, dignitaries, volunteers, school children and Australia’s media gathered at Sydney Olympic Park to turn back the clock and reflect on the magical moments of Sydney 2000. A decade earlier, Aussie athletes gave their all on the world stage with a home crowd, and produced sporting results which have now defined a generation. The largest ever Australian Olympic Team of 632 athletes had taken on the world, and lived up to the Team’s motto: Inspiration of the nation. Sydney 2000 is often remembered as much for being a time of good will and spontaneous street celebrations as for its golden memories on the sporting field. Australia’s vibrant harbour city was on show for the world to enjoy, as a proud nation presented the world’s largest sporting event that would ultimately be called “the best Olympic Games ever” by IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch. 2012 APPEAL BREAKFAST 15th September 2010 started with an early corporate breakfast at the Sydney Sofitel Wentworth to raise funds for the 2012 Australian Olympic Team. With Alan Jones as MC, the breakfast began the day of Celebrations with a host of Sydney 2000 Olympians present. The guest of honour, Lord Sebastion delivered an inspiring speech on his admiration for Sydney, of the spirit in which the 2000 Games were run and how he plans to take the best of the Sydney Games to replicate it in London. Following the breakfast, Sydney Olympic Park was the focal point of the Celebrations. SCHOOLS CELEBRATION The action started at 10am with 1,200 primary school children participating the Schools Celebration - starting with a re-enactment of the Opening Ceremony Parade marching into the Olympic Stadium. Olympic Champion Natalie Cook led the event as children - many not yet born in 2000 - learned about the values and traditions of the Olympic Games including the Athlete Oath, the Olympic Flags, the Torch Relay and the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron. Following the formalities which included speeches from Premier of New South Wales, the Hon. Kristina Keneally MP and former Olympics Minister Michael Knight, Cook was joined by over 50 Olympians and Paralympians in the Athletics Centre to play sport with the

kids. “It was just great,” Cook said of the morning. “The kids were so happy and enthusiastic, you couldn’t have asked for a better day.” PLAQUES With the Schools Celebration underway, attention turned to the formal proceedings in the park adjacent to the Olympic Stadium. Three unique plaques were unveiled in honour of legends in the Olympic Movement. The official party - Premier Keneally, Members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) - were joined by a couple hundred Sydney 2000 Volunteers who added a flurry of colour to the nostalgic occasion.

- Louise Sauvage OAM was honoured for her contribution to the 2000 Paralympic Games and the Paralympic Movement. In 2000 and in front of her home crowd, Sauvage pushed her way to Gold in the T54 5000m as well as a silver in the T54 800m, confirming her place as Australia’s most successful Paralympian at the time.

- Catherine Freeman OAM was honoured with a plaque in her name. AOC President John

Coates AC reminded the audience of Catherine’s unique and extraordinary place in Australia’s Olympic history and stated how important her role was in the Sydney 2000 Games. Ten years ago to the day, Cathy Freeman lit the Olympic Cauldron at the Opening Ceremony and then eleven nights later returned to the athletic track to win a “historic victory” in the 400 metres - carrying the expectations of a nation and providing a moment of inspirations for a generation of Indigenous Australians.

- Juan Antonio Samaranch, the former IOC President (1980 to 2001) who had passed away

in late April 2010 was honoured with a plaque unveiled in the shadow of the Sydney Olympic Cauldron. In September 1993 he was the man who famously announced ‘the winner is Sydney’, and as a proud nation watched on at the Closing Ceremony he declared Sydney 2000 to be ‘the best Olympic Games ever’. The Sydney Games were a sad occasion, however, for Mr Samaranch, with his wife Maria Teresa Salisachs passing away soon after the Opening Ceremony for which he flew to Barcelona for her funeral and then later returned to Sydney with his daughter, Maria Therese. On 15 September 2010, the Olympic Movement was honoured once more with his daughter Maria Therese Samaranch returning to Sydney to dedicate a plaque to her father, whom AOC President described as ‘a great friend of Sydney’. During the service Ms Samaranch offered ‘I am sure that my father would be today a very, very happy man to learn of this celebration and in a way he's sharing with all of us the spirit which brought Sydney to organise the best ever Games, as he said so many, many times."

- London 2012: The Sydney Olympic Park Authority took the opportunity to dedicate a

plaque to London 2012 in the pavement of Olympic Boulevard, next to that of Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004 and the light poles marking each edition of the Olympic Games. Lord Coe dedicated the London 2012 plaque and in doing so launched the Volunteer drive for London 2012 live to the BBC in England. Lord Coe, surrounded by excited Sydney 2000 volunteers acknowledge their amazing work a decade earlier and challenged the volunteer work force for the 2012 Games to surpass the benchmark the Sydney volunteers set.

As the plaques were unveiled, a steady stream of Sydney 2000 volunteers arrived for a reunion BBQ and free concert staged by the NSW Government. VOLUNTEERS REUNION & CONCERT Over 5,000 proud volunteers descended on Sydney Olympic Park, resplendent in their unique blue uniforms to re-live their memories of the Games and catch up on old times. Though ten years on, their camaraderie and joy to be a Sydney 2000 volunteer was plain to see. At the Sydney Showground, the NSW Premier and former SOCOG Chief Sandy Hollway

thanked them for being the backbone of the Games. They appreciated the thanks, plus the free BBQ and transport the NSW Government had provided. One sensed if the Games returned tomorrow they would all be back to make them happen. To close out their day, a free concert for the volunteers was hosted by Channel 9’s Ken Sutcliffe and Leila McKinnon. Footage of the Ceremonies and sporting moments from the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games were rolled as Olympic and Paralympic Champions were interviewed on stage in the newly named ‘Cathy Freeman Park’. They were entertained by the Ceremony icons Nikki Webster, Marcia Hines and on-stage interviews with Olympic greats from Sydney including Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett, Susie O’Neill and the Hockeyroos. The activity was all leading up to one point though, and when the sun set over Sydney Olympic Park, it was time for Louise Sauvage and Cathy Freeman to light up the sky. Sauvage and Freeman lit the Olympic Cauldron together as spectators held their breath and people at home watched it live on TV. “It was a wonderful experience,” Freeman said afterwards. “It was so great to be up there with Louise and lighting the flame. It brought back so many memories.” SYDNEY 2000 CELEBRATION DINNER The Celebration Dinner - the final event of the day - was staged in the Millennium Room of the Olympic Stadium. It was co-hosted by the AOC and NSW Olympians Club to thank the members of the Bid Company, SOCOG Board and SOCOG’s senior management who were instrumental in the success of securing and then running the Olympic Games in Sydney. The dinner was a unique celebration of the milestone with the Olympic family - which included a strong reunion of Olympians from 2000. With the burning Olympic cauldron providing a backdrop, the Celebration Dinner began with co-host Peter Hadfield OAM, President NSW Olympians Club welcoming all guests and as per tradition he welcomed - and the room warmly acknowledged - all Olympians & Paralympians from each successive Games from London 1948 through to Vancouver 2010. John Coates AC, President AOC and Chef de Mission of the 2000 Australian Team welcome all guests and thanked all involved in the Sydney 2000 Games - especially members of the Bid Company and SOCOG team. He recalled the unique experiences of the Australian athletes which the ‘home Games’ afforded them, most especially marching into the Opening Ceremony in front of a home crowd. MC’s Grant Hackett and Giann Rooney interviewed Olympians and Paralympians from 2000, whilst our guest speaker Lord Coe - still energetic after a long day of events - was again enthralling. Brian Dawe from the popular television comedy ‘The Games’ reminded the audience of the lighter side of organising the Games and Marcia Hines closed the night with her song ‘Rise Up’ which became an anthem for the athletes and volunteers during the Sydney Games. The NSW Olympic Council, with the AOC, would particularly like to thank the NSW State Government and the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, along with the Australian Paralympic Committee, the City of Sydney and Events NSW for their generous support of the 10th Anniversary Celebrations. Also, a special thanks to the Spirit of Sydney - a dedicated group of volunteers who have kept in touch since 2000, who were instrumental in arranging the Volunteer’s reunion and guiding the celebrations.

2010 Executive Director’s Review 2010 was dominated by three significant Olympic events: the staging of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and the Sydney 2000 10th Anniversary Celebrations in Sydney. Closer to home, the NSW Olympic Council devoted much of its efforts towards Olympic Education and began the fundraising campaign for the 2012 Australian Olympic Team. Vancouver 2010 (as detailed earlier): It was especially pleasing to see nineteen of the forty Olympians comprising the 2010 Australian Olympic Winter Team coming from NSW. Many athletes were assisted in their preparations from the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) and by scholarships through the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS). The 2010 Team was motivated, vibrant and represented Australia with distinction - on and off the field of play. As many Olympians in the 2010 Team are relatively young, it’s great to see them continue to compete on the world stage, now with their sights set on the four year campaign towards Sochi in 2014. Sydney 2000 10th Anniversary Celebrations (as detailed earlier): From the NSW Olympic Council’s perspective, the Sydney 2000 10th Anniversary Celebrations were an incredible promotion of the Olympic Movement and it was a pleasure to be part of the organising group together with the AOC, the Australian Paralympic Committee and the NSW Government. Hundreds of Olympians took part in events amongst thousands of participants and the all day events (from dawn to midnight) achieved saturated media coverage on live television, AM and FM radio and through the press. It was a truly momentous day as the city paused to remember the magical time in Sydney’s history during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Our thanks go especially to the NSW Government and Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) who were particularly generous in their support of the event with the NSW Premier, The Hon Kristina Keneally MP committing to much of the event’s funding, and attending most of the day’s celebrations. The two more prominent events concerning NSWOC were the Appeal Breakfast - attended by over 300 guests and which raised $50,000 for the 2012 Team, and the Celebration Dinner which was attended by over 800 Olympians and guests and was jointly hosted by the AOC and the NSW Olympian’s Club. Both events had an incredible atmosphere and we hope they have set the scene for the respective fundraising events and Olympian’s Club events in the near future. Fundraising: On 27 July 2010, the Hon. Kristina Keneally MP, Premier of NSW officially launched the 2012 Team Appeal by committing a $500,000 donation from the NSW Government. The event, marking ‘two years to go’ until the Opening Ceremony in London, was attended by many Olympians and athletes aspiring to make the 2012 Team. Dani Samuels (Discus World Champion) delivered a motivating speech to remind all present of the journey an athlete will endure on their road to London.

2010 ANNUAL REPORT p. 19

The first of two major events for the London campaign, the ‘One Year to Go Appeal Dinner’ is being planned for 27 July 2011. The event was ‘launched’ in November 2010 and as we go to print it is well on its way to making additional funds for the Team. The AOC’s (NSW) Fundraising Committee for London, Chaired by John Conde AO has once again steadfastly supported our event program, and is actively selling for our future events. The NSWOC, AOC and 2012 Team is indebted to this Committee for their strong support of our events which raise much needed funds for the 2012 Team. Fundraising activity is also being planned in the Illawarra and the Hunter regions of NSW with regional dinners being planned for 2012 in Wollongong and Newcastle respectively. The Premier’s commitment of $500,000 (to be paid in 2011 directly to the 2012 Team Fund), adds a great boost to the monies already received in 2010, which are:

- $50,000 from the Appeal Breakfast of 15 September 2010 (Sydney 2000 Celebrations) - $50,000 allocation from the NSWOC Executive from investment distributions (2010). - $60,000 was already raised following the 2008 campaign (but were paid in 2009, and

therefore allocated to the 2009 - 2012 Quadrennium).

The financial statement (on the final page) reports $131,361 raised funds, which accounts for expenses incurred for future events). When we add the $500,000 government commitment, our position will be $631,000 funds raised for the 2012 Team Fund. The ‘One Year to Go’ event taking place on 27 July 2011 is also aiming to raise over $500,000 for the Team. It is anticipated by the end of 2011 we will have a position of a minimum $1.1million in raised funds. This should be a healthy position prior to entering the events in the Olympic year of 2012. Our overall target is $1.8million and we plan to go beyond that. Olympic Education continues to go from strength to strength. The Pierre de Coubertin Award (instigated by NSWOC President Helen Brownlee eighteen years ago) has set another record in 2010 with 355 students receiving this prestigious award in NSW. The growth of the program in recent years is in large part due to the enthusiastic and diligent work of Georgie Exton (Executive Assistant NSWOC). The year ahead in 2011 will again be busy with the major fundraising event taking place on 27 July, and then planning for multiple events for the Olympic Year, 2012. My thanks as always is extended to the NSW Olympic Council’s Executive Board for their support and guidance, in particular to our President, Helen Brownlee OAM and Vice Presidents Doug Donoghue AM and Geoff Davidson for their counsel. Our sincere thanks is also extended to John Conde AO and his fundraising committee for their continual support for the Team. Many thanks to the NSW Government - who have been exceptionally supportive of the Olympic Movement in 2010 - especially with the 10th Anniversary Celebrations of Sydney 2000 - on top of their perennial support granted to the NSWOC by Communities NSW (Sport and Recreation).

Of course all our thanks from the NSWOC go to the AOC - to John Coates AC, Craig Phillips, Secretary General, the Executive Board, Directors, and staff - whom the NSW Olympic Council shares a close working relationship with. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Helen Brownlee, who (as detailed earlier in this report) has now achieved an incredible twenty-year milestone as President of the NSW Olympic Council and Executive Member of the Australian Olympic Committee. It is an outstanding achievement and having now worked with Helen for several years it still amazes me how much time and effort Helen puts into the Olympic Movement - and all in a voluntary capacity. My thanks also goes to Georgie Exton who continues in the role of Executive Assistant with intellect and enthusiasm - two virtues we will no doubt call upon as we start to ramp up towards London 2012. Olympic Education

2010 Pierre de Coubertin Awards The NSW State Presentation of the Pierre de Coubertin Awards was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on 25 June 2010 attended by Mr Craig Phillips, AOC Secretary General, Ms Helen Brownlee OAM, President NSW Olympic Council, and special guest Hannah Campbell-Pegg, dual Olympian in the sport of Luge from Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010. One hundred students were recognised at this State Award Ceremony. The Pierre de Coubertin Award is granted by the AOC (NSWOC) to senior students who are nominated by their school for displaying excellence in sport and importantly, demonstrating sportsmanship. In conveying this award, the AOC recognises sports people who not only play the game well, but uphold the Olympic virtues of fair play. Students are selected by their schools and are often role models for students in their own right. Having spent a full day with them, the NSW Olympic Council was once again encouraged by the exceptionally high calibre of students who are nominated for this award. Several Australian Olympians joined the Academy to impart their knowledge to the students. Debbie Watson OAM (Water Polo Gold Medallist, Sydney 2000) took the students through the Live Clean Play Clean drug education session which is always an eye opener at the students. Winter Olympian Anthony Deane (Skeleton, Vancouver 2010) had the student’s undivided attention with his presentation on his Olympic journey and life as a winter athlete. Michelle Jenneke, a young athlete selected to participate in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore was also a special guest. The Pierre de Coubertin Award is open to all secondary schools in NSW. The take-up in 2010 was very encouraging and set a record of 355 Award recipients. The Pierre de Coubertin Award Program has now been successfully run for 18 years.

Further Representation Seven Award recipients were part of the Youth Olympic Games Team, in Singapore, bringing home three gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Two Award recipients from the 2007 intake were selected to represent the AOC at the International Youth Forum in Izmer, Turkey during August, 2010. a.s.p.i.r.e school network NSW Olympic Council continues to support the AOC’s web-based educational initiative – the a.s.p.i.r.e. School’s Network, which expanded in 2010 reflecting the positive results of the initiative. The a.s.p.i.r.e. school network is the AOC’s national education program for primary educators, designed to instil in young Australians an appreciation for the values, spirit and philosophy of the Olympic Movement. It is a free, online, values based program that provides access to Olympic themed resources. Over 8,000 schools and 14,850 teachers have registered with the program and over 200 lesson plans have been devised using the a.s.p.i.r.e. resources. In NSW this includes 3,940 teachers from 2,576 schools – representing a strong indication of the popularity of this resource. In 2011, the NSWOC looks forward to presenting a new AOC program ‘Talk Like a Champ’ to regional and metropolitan NSW involving special presentations of Olympians visiting secondary schools.

Olympians Club of NSW: President’s Review

This year I was delighted to see a further building of support of Olympians Club events, and in particular the strong support of Winter Olympic representatives and our younger Olympians representatives. Two events were conducted in 2010 which by all measures were huge successes.

An Olympians Club Race Day was conducted on April 10th as a part of the Randwick Autumn Carnival. 171 people attended which exceeded our originally allocated capacity. The Vista Room at Randwick was the perfect venue to view the racing action, the catering was superb and a few Olympians showed that they were also fine judges of form to finish on top of the bookies during the day. The Olympians Club Race Day will be repeated in 2011 and it is hoped that we are able to attract even more Olympians to attend. September 15th, 2010 marked the 10th Anniversary of the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games and the Olympic Cauldron came alive after a re-lighting ceremony by Cathy Freeman and Louise Sauvage. 850 attended the Anniversary Dinner at the Olympic Stadium, where Olympic 1500m Gold medalist and Chairman of the London Olympics Organising Committee, Sebastian Coe was the guest of honour. Also in attendance were the daughter and granddaughter of former International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch. Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe relived their Sydney Olympic memories with hosts Grant Hackett and Giaan Rooney. It is my hope that the 10th Anniversary Dinner provides a platform for additional Olympians to engage with the Olympians Club. I would ask all Olympians who did attend to personally invite their team mates to attend future events. Sincere thanks to the AOC and the NSW Olympic Council for their continued and enthusiastic support of the Olympians Club and a special thanks to James Edwards and Georgie Exton for their involvement and assistance. Thank you to my fellow committee members for the contribution that they have made to the success of the Club and for the assistance that they have provided to me. NEW SOUTH WALES OLYMPIC COUNCIL INC. NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2010 (1) CORPORATE INFORMATION

The financial report of the New South Wales Olympic Council Inc. (NSWOC) for the year ended 31 December 2010 was authorised for issue in accordance with a resolution of the Executive Board on 23 February 2011. The NSWOC is an Association incorporated under the Associations Incorporations Act, 1984 of New South Wales and is domiciled in New South Wales. The principal place of business is Level 3, 1 Atchison Street, St Leonards, NSW, 2065. The nature of the operations and principal activities of the Council are that the NSWOC acts to develop and protect the Olympic Movement in the state of New South Wales in accordance with the Olympic Charter and the Constitution of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. and to actively promote the fundamental principles of Olympism within the framework of sports.

(2) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The significant policies which have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are:

(a) Basis of preparation

This special purpose financial report has been prepared for distribution to the members to fulfil the committee of managements’ (“Executive Board”) financial reporting requirements under the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 of the New South Wales and the Councils’ constitution. The accounting policies used in the preparation of this financial report, as described below, are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act 1984 of New South Wales and the Councils’ constitution, and are, in the opinion of the Executive Board, appropriate to meet the needs of members:

(i) The financial report has been prepared on an accrual basis of accounting

including the historical cost convention and the going concern assumption.

(ii) The Council is not a reporting entity because in the opinion of the

Executive there are unlikely to exist users of the financial report who are unable to command the preparation of reports tailored so as to satisfy specifically all of their information needs. The members neither hold equity in, nor are financial lenders to, the Council and their membership is pursuant to the Olympic Charter as well as the Constitution.

NEW SOUTH WALES OLYMPIC COUNCIL INC. NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2010

(a) Basis of preparation (Con’t)

Accordingly, the financial report has been prepared in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 of New South Wales and the Constitution, the basis of accounting specified by all Accounting Standards and Interpretations and the disclosure requirements of AASB 101 ‘Presentation of Financial Statements’, AASB 107 ‘Cash Flow Statements’, AASB 108 ‘Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors’, AASB 1031 ‘Materiality and AASB 1048 Interpretation and Application of Standards’ which apply to all entities required to prepare financial reports under the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 of the New South Wales and the Constitution.

The Executive have determined that in order for the financial report to give a true and fair view of the Council’s performance, cash flows and financial position, the requirements of Australian Accounting Standards and other financial reporting requirements in Australia relating to the measurement of assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and equity should be complied with.

(iii) The financial report is prepared in Australian dollars.

(b) Statement of compliance

Certain Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations have recently been issued or amended but are not yet effective and have not been adopted by the Council for the annual reporting period ended 31 December 2010. The Executive have not early adopted any of these new or amended standards or interpretations. The Executive have not yet fully assessed the impact of these new or amended standards (to the extent relevant to the Council) and interpretations.

This special purpose financial report complies with Australian Accounting Standards as described above.

(c) Income and expenditure recognition

Income, with the exception of fundraising and government grants, has been brought to account on an accrual basis and if not received at balance date is reflected in the statement of financial position as a receivable. Expenses have been brought to account as incurred and any expenses incurred but not paid for at balance date are reflected in the statement of financial position as creditors.

(d) Fundraising

The NSWOC undertakes fundraising on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc (‘AOC’) and, as a result all funds raised by the NSWOC are recorded directly in the financial statements of the AOC.

At 31 December 2010, the NSWOC had raised $131,361(2009: $63,762) towards the 2009 – 2012 Olympic Team Appeal.

(e) Income Tax

The NSWOC is exempt from Australian income tax.

(f) Cash and cash equivalents

The NSWOC undertakes fundraising on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. (‘AOC’) and, as a result all of the funds raised by the NSWOC are recorded directly in the financial statements of the AOC. At 31 December 2010 the NSWOC had no bank account and for administrative purposes all cash transactions are processed by the AOC and the net cash position is reflected in a net receivable account at year end (refer Note 6).

(g) Trade and other receivables

Trade receivables, which generally have 30 – 90 day terms, are recognised and carried at original invoice amount less an allowance for any uncollectible amounts. An estimate for doubtful debts is made when collection of the full amount is no longer probable. Bad debts are written off when identified.

(h) Property, plant and equipment

Acquisition Items of property, plant and equipment are recorded at cost or, in the case of donations and sponsorship contributions in kind, at fair value at the time of donation or contribution, less accumulated depreciation and any impairment in value. Depreciation and amortisation Items of plant and equipment are depreciated on a straight line basis over their estimated useful lives ranging from 3 to 40 years from the date of acquisition. Impairment The carrying values of plant and equipment are reviewed for impairment when events or changes in circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable. If any such indication exists and where the carrying values exceed the estimated recoverable amount, the assets are written down to their recoverable amount. The recoverable amount of plant and equipment is the greater of fair value less costs to sell and value in use. Value in use is the depreciated replacement cost of an asset when the future economic benefits of the asset are not primarily dependent on the asset’s ability to generate net cash inflows and where the NSWOC would, if deprived of the asset, replace its remaining future economic benefits.

(j) Trade and other payables

Expenditure is brought to account on an accruals basis. Any expenses incurred but not paid for at balance date are recorded as payables on the statement of financial position.

(k) Government grants Government grants are recognised at their fair value where there is a reasonable assurance that the grant will be received and all attaching conditions have been complied with.

(l) Employee benefits and expenses

(i) Wages, salaries, annual leave and long services leave.

(3) SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING JUDGEMENTS, ESTIMATES AND ASSUMPTIONS

In applying the accounting policies the NSWOC evaluates judgements, estimates and assumptions based on experience and other factors, including expectations of future events. All judgements, estimates and assumptions made are believed to be reasonable based on the most current set of circumstances available to the NSWOC. Actual results may differ from the judgements, estimates and assumptions.

(15) GOING CONCERN

The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis.

The Council’s ability to continue as a going concern is dependant on receiving the forecast level of funding revenue from the Australian Olympic Committee grant. The Executive have prepared a forecast for the 2011 year which indicates the Council will be able to meet their financial obligations as and when they fall due. On this basis the Executive believe it is appropriate to adopt the going concern basis in the preparation of these financial statements.
