Christchurch - continuedOperation Bledisloe

Over the time of the move the team have also purchased a new transit van that is currently doing 35 to 40 deliveries a week and can hold up to 4 standard pallets.

The team have also gained a special project to move 164 x 40ft HQ containers of fibreglass piping, 11.8m long, from Damman to Lyt-telton. The first 21 containers are being loaded out on the 2nd of November and this will move over the next 2 months. The shipment is for an irrigation system in Waimate. VISA are handling this from door to door.

Our Operation Bledisloe group has been going from strength to strength and finding wins for both New Zealand and Australia. To continue growing this successful program, the Operation Bledisloe team have created a ‘Bledisloe Sales Pack’ to empower every sales person to be informed on the Aus/NZ trade lanes.

The Bledisloe Cup - International Rugby Rivalry

In the world of the ‘real’ Bledisloe Cup there is also news! After a hard fought 12 all draw in terrible weather conditions in Sydney, the NZ All Blacks retained the Bledisloe Cup for another year. This is following an overwhelming performance at Eden Park, Auckland by winning 51-20. This is the twelfth year in a row that the cup has been held by NZ - an extraordinary sporting performance.A performance that certainly rivals that current VISA Operation Bledisloe!

VISA University

Francesco introduces us to his role

The VISA Sydney Operations team

On Friday the 12th of September the Sydney office launched their new training program ‘VISA University’. The VISA University programs aims to promote both technical and non technical skills in our employees as well as cross training between departments. VISA aims to actively encourage all employees to learn and to be of greater value to the company year-on-year.

Our first session was run by the Sydney Operations team as ‘An Insight into Operations’. They invited people over the lunch hour to learn more about the day to day function of their team, shared

their recent innovations and gave their ideas for their vision of VISA Global Logistics.

The event was attended by 46 Sydney team members and the feedback was very positive from those who attended. Some of this included:

“My congratulations go out to Carlo and his team for their effort and all the time they put in for today’s presentation. Going by the applause and the hype in the room it was a great success.” - George, Director of Sales and Business Development

“It was entertaining; informative and funny” - Federica, Sales

Other departments will now be following suit and presenting their visions for VISA University, along with more general training sessions such as presenting and investing. If you would like to learn more about running your own sessions, please get in touch with Louiza at [email protected]

An impressed audience

VISA Shanghai visit Client dinner in VicenzaEdward and Brendan from Shanghai had a recent visit to Italy, spending time with the Vicenza, Reggio Emilia and Naples sales team.

Alessandro Pelucchi from VISA Global’s Vicenza branch organised and hosted an informal, home made dinner with about 25 of our clients.

By the accounts of those who were there, although the food was wonderful, the highlight of the night was the fact that all the food was being served by Alessandro and one of our VIP clients Valbruna.

Everyone had a great time and built stronger relationships for the future!

Sydney air freight

Our warehouse was full of everyone’s favourite sugar filled breakfast food, Pop Tarts, for Kelloggs 35 000kg airfreight order.

Which makes this officially our biggest import air order into our new Sydney warehouse.

Would you like some breakfast? Soilmec

Our air freight team moved cargo for a new client Soilmec - a 10m long drilling rig that had to be air freighted to HKG airport. Certainly an unusual air freight shipment!

This type of freight can only fly on a freighter due to its length.

Brisbane BlurbWritten by John Scanlon - Business Development

News from the Far WestWritten by Richelle Griffin - Sales Executive

It has been a very productive couple of months in the Brisbane office and to start off I would like to thank our Customs and Operations departments who have borne the brunt of the initial influx of Fremantle work which Queensland will handle from now on. They have been working tirelessly and are finally starting to see the light as they find their feet with the increased workload.

Carlo, from Sydney, visited the Brisbane office from the 14-15th of October to swap ideas with Joel and the operations team, and to give a more in depth view on how Sydney has successfully implemented a paperless operations environment.

Joanne, Jen and Charlotte recently attended the Tina Turner Tribute Show and, as you can tell by the pictures, they left no stone ‘unturnered’. They were also lucky enough to be pulled on stage to dance with the singer and Jo accidently crushed her toe while busting out some Tina impersonations.

The Christmas party is also fast approaching and is always a great occasion for colleagues to spend time together and embarrass themselves over a couple of standard drinks which are consumed responsibly.

There have been a few refreshing changes in the Wild West and we are all excited for what the future brings moving forward.

We have a great team and since the last edition we have had a new addition to our Branch. Alana Anelli, who is our Transport Operator / Operations extraordinaire, comes to us from Famous Pacific and brings 17 years experience to the branch.

I was also lucky enough to be invited on a Friday evening to the 2014 Western Australian Industry and Export Awards at the Hyatt Regency Perth as our client, Scitech, was nominated for the Education and Training Export Award. I am so pleased to report that they WON!

Scitech is a not-for-profit organisation proudly supported by the Western Australian Government through the Office of Science. Their mission is to increase awareness, interest, capability and participation by all Western Australians in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We would like to thank them for giving VISA the opportunity to look after them.

The VISA Global Internship ProgramIn 2011, an opportunity was brought to VISA Global Logistics from one of our innovative sales team members, Federica Guidi. Using case study examples from other successful companies, she showed the benefits of bringing an international internship program into VISA Global.

Since that time, VISA Global Logistics have run programs with over 25 interns from Italy and France with our partner universities. They have worked in areas that vary between accounts, customs, operations and in between. We sat down with Francesco Mangione, one of the people currently going through the VISA intern program, and Giacomo Celentano, who previously completed the program and successfully gained ongoing employment with VISA Global Logistics.

Both Francesco and Giacomo are working within the VISA Sydney Operations team, although Giacomo completed his internship in the accounts department.

Tell me how the process worked for you to be chosen for the program?

Francesco - I went through 3 rounds of interviews. On my second interview, I had a one day warning that I would be having a phone interview the next morning with Federica. So I spent 6 hours the night before studying the company and everything I could about it.

After a 3rd interview with my potential manager, Carlo Tarchi, I started with VISA Global soon after.

Giacomo - After a couple of emails back and forth from Federica, I had a phone interview with both Fede and Tsara, my potential manager, and then got the position. There was a bit of a waiting period, but it was a fairly smooth process.

What was your first impression of Australia?

Francesco - Now that I am here, I am finding it very easy to meet more international people and socialise with them. Australia has so many different cultures and I’ve made friends with people from all over the world.

Giacomo - Australia is a real melting pot of cultures, even the VISA Global office itself is incredibly mixed. Sometimes I feel like I’m meeting people from countries I know nothing about or hadn’t really heard of before.

What has been the best part of your internship program so far?

Francesco - Being part of the Operations team. The group I work with has been a fantastic introduction into freight forwarding and logistics. We balance the work with the fun we have and Carlo does a great job at making boring work interesting.

Giacomo - Starting in accounts, there were no other Italians in the team. I thought this might make my transition more difficult, but everyone was extremely welcoming. I felt like I was a part of the team from day one.

How important is it to have opportunities such as this for your career?

Francesco -Very important. Both for my CV in general and for Australian job opportunities. Ideally, I would like to stay with VISA,however, even if I don’t, my chances of being able to get a job are greatly increased through this opportunity.

Giacomo - For me, it led to a sponsorship from the company, so it’s been incredibly important to my career. Right now, I’m where I want to be in my career and that’s fantastic.

Where would you like this opportunity to take you?

Francesco - I would like to stay with VISA Global, I really like working for this company. Firstly, I would like to learn as much as I can about operations and how it works. Ultimately I want to be somewhere that I can bring new opportunities and business. I don’t want to just stop here, what I really want is to work towards a position where I can bring innovation and ongoing value to the company.

Giacomo - I really like VISA and the network they have around the world. It would be great to have the opportunity to experience some of the other international offices as the company grows. I feel like I’m not the kind of person who would like to stay in one role, doing the same thing, for too long. So who knows where this company could take me?

There are days when you realise how far you are from home, but you know that this is something you have to do.

Current VISA Global intern Francesco Mangione and past VISA Global interns who have gone on to full time employment, Giacomo Raffaghello, Alessandra Viviani and Giacomo Celentano

Community and Celebration

World Mental Health Day Soar Above

VISA Global’s Marketing Executive Louiza Clancy has founded a new social project in her home town of Wollongong.

The project, Soar Above, is aimed to ensure every woman in the region is safe, secure and empowered through active projects run by young citizens. She has recruited a team of 8 volunteers who are currently organising their first event.

For the initial project, Louiza has partnered with the Wollongong Women’s Refuge.

Ms Clancy said the partnership between Soar Above and the Wollongong Women’s Refuge would initially bring hygiene and feminine products to women within the Wollongong Women’s Refuge and its subsidiary houses.

She had the idea for Soar Above when she became aware of the growing need for the support, safety and empowerment of women in the Illawarra.

When she approached the Wollongong Women’s Refuge, she heard how the most desperately needed resources were some of the most commonly used every day.

The vision for Soar Above is to be able to provide such products free of charge to those women seeking aid and safety.

Soar Above is currently seeking donations of second-hand goods donated by the general public to be sold at weekend markets, with 100 per cent of the profits to go towards the purchase of hygiene and feminine products for the Wollongong Women’s Refuge.

“I’ve got a team of young, active Wollongong citizens enthused and helping me already with the strategic plan we have in place,” Louiza said.

The project has been created through Louiza’s involvement in an organisation called Junior Chamber International (JCI), that supports young active citizens in creating their own social change. In Wollongong their projects have in the past raised over $50 000 for the Cancer Council in Biggest Morning Tea events, provided work experience for homeless teens and partner young professionals with business mentors for an affordable mentoring program, among others.

You can follow the journey of this project on the Soar Above facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/JCIISoarAbove

On Friday the 10th of October, Sydney office celebrated World Mental Heath Day with a morning tea and a ‘cuppa’, encouraging everyone to take a moment to relax and check in with their colleagues. World Mental Health Day (WMHD) is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy.

Community and Celebration

Melbourne Cup

Each year, the Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most popular thoroughbred horse race. Known as “the race that stops the nation”, it is one of the richest turf races in the world.

Although our Melbourne office enjoys a public holiday on this day, our other offices in Australia and New Zealand also take the time to celebrate this race each year.

Our Sydney office celebrated with an International Lunch and Fashion show, where Stephanie Wang took out the best dressed award after taking to the runway.

Both our New Zealand offices, Auckland and Christchurch, celebrated with a creative hat competition, with the whole team bringing out their best.

The VISA Family

A Marathon Effort

A new arrival

Alessio Pioggiarella from our Naples office just became a father to a beautiful baby girl named Marta. Alessia, his partner Imma and big sister Gaia welcomed Marta on the 2nd October 2014. She weighed in at 2.32 kgs.

Marcus Denny and Shohre Mansouri completed the Melbourne marathon on the 12th of October.

Marcus ran a time of 4:24 and Shohre ran a time of 5:35. A fantastic effort from both!

Gambogi-VISA X FactorHave you ever wished you could become a famous singer?

Simone Vaglica from Gambogi-Visa in Milan has always had this dream and now he’s been able to release his brand new single.

It took five months of hard work for him to release it, but in the end he finally got it published.

As a performer he is known as “Symeo” and the song is called “Il Giorno Più Lungo”; this is a track that pushes people not to surrender to the difficulties that life brings.

You can find the song and download it from stores such as ITunes, Google Store and Amazon Music, so just choose one and support!

Everyone in VISA Global sometimes has a bad day… Symeo’s song will remind you to keep upbeat and in good spirits!

Coincidence?

You would think the Middle East sales department call each other in the morning to make sure they are wearing the same color shade.. No, there was just a feeling in the team!

Francesco Lombardo, Gabriele Barbera and Edmondo PrandiMarta with her big sister Gaia

A visit to Italy

Last month two of our team members from Sydney, Danielle Srour and Carlo Tarchi, had the chance to visit the Italy office to share with them the ideas, processes and operational functions between the two offices to see what benefits could brought to each other.
