If you are like me, you may be curious about how many of our Catholic traditions and Holy Days started. So, I decided to do a little research about the history of All Souls Day and here is what I found. In the early days of the Church, the names of the faithful departed were posted in the church so that the community would remember to pray for them. Starting in the 6th century, the Benedictine monasteries in Europe held a commemoration of deceased members following Pentecost. Later, around the year 1048, St. Odilo (in Cluny, France) decreed that special prayers be offered for the souls in Purgatory on November 2nd, the day after All Saints Day. Soon afterwards, November

2nd was adopted as the Feast of All Souls for the whole Church. Today, All Souls Day is a solemn commemoration of all those who have died, especially those who may be in Purgatory. Praying for the dead is a Christian obligation. The Church devotes the month of November to prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory and so, participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good way to begin the month!

Quizá, así como yo, Ud. también tiene curiosidad de saber acerca de nuestras tradiciones católicas y como y porqué se celebra el Dia de Todos los Fieles Difuntos. Decidí investigar un poco sobre la historia de esta celebración y esto es lo que encontré. En los primeros días de la Iglesia, los nombres de los fieles difuntos se publicaban en los templos para que la comunidad recordara orar por ellos. A partir del siglo VI, los monasterios benedictinos en Europa celebraron una conmemora-ción de los miembros fallecidos después de Pentecostés. Más tarde, alrededor del año 1048, San Odilo (en Cluny, Francia) decretó que se ofrecieran oraciones especiales por las almas del Purgatorio el 2 de noviembre, el día después del Día de Todos los Santos. Poco después, el 2 de noviembre fue adoptado como la Fiesta de Todos los Fieles Difuntos para toda la Iglesia Católica. Hoy, esta celebración es una conmemoración solemne de todos los que han muerto, especialmente aquellos que podrían estar en el Purgatorio. Orar por los muertos es una obligación cristiana. ¡La Iglesia dedica el mes de noviembre a la oración por las Almas Santas en el Purgatorio y, por lo tanto, la participación en el Día de la Misa de Todos los Fieles Difuntos es una buena manera de iniciar el mes!

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel today, Zacchaeus accepts our Lord joyfully; and the sign of his acceptance is his open house and his resolution to give half of his goods to the poor.

Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you also show your acceptance of our Lord by joyfully sharing your goods with your neighbor who is hungry, hopeless, alone and frightened.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Zaqueo acepta a nuestro Señor con alegría; y el signo de su acepta-ción es abrir su casa y su resolución de entregar la mitad de sus bienes a los pobres.

A través de su donación a la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paúl, también demuestra su acep-tación de nuestro Señor al compartir con alegría sus bienes con sus prójimos que tienen hambre, desesperanza, están solos y con miedo.
