In order to celebrate the Fourth Day of the Global Korean Overseas, there was a meritori-ous compatriot award ceremony at The Consul-ate general of the Republic of Korea in Boston on November 17, 2010. President Lee, Myung Bak, the Consul General, Jooseok Kim awarded the meritorious compatriots in New England.

The Honorable President Award was award-ed to Kim, Jeomsoon of Maine. She was the chairperson of Korean-Women Society. The Prime Minister Award was presented to Kim, Kyungwon. He is the director of US Taekwondo Education Foundation. Lastly, Cho, Myungjin the previous President of Korean Society of Rhode Island was awarded with this award.

Ms. Kim, who received the first award respec-tively, expressed her thanks in that she came to the United State in the 1970s when she was nineteen. Now, she is sixty and she said, I just did what I wanted to do for the Korean soci-ety and now I have been presented with this

award. I am sorry to those who have actually accomplished wonderful things for the Korean Society. She later addressed her award to her father devoting himself in the Korean War.

Mr. Kim, Kyungwon from Massachusetts re-ceived the Prime Minister Award. He started the US Taekwondo Education Foundation and he started to teach his student in Chicopee Pub-lic Schools. Now, more than 100 public schools provide Taekwondo as part of their official cur-riculum. He has a made a huge contribution in the United Stated for Korea. He enhanced our national prestige.

President Yu, HanSun of the Korean Society of New England and his family were present at the award ceremony. Other presidents of Ko-rean Societies and family members of the Con-sulate General were all celebrating the awards in Boston on Wednesday.

This past week on November 17th, there was a seminar regard-ing the Grass Root Movement. It was held in the Kaya Restau-rant in Cambridge, MA. Around fifty voters participated in the meeting and discussed the current issues about voters votes in the meeting.

In the meeting, Director, Dong Seok Kim, of the Korean Vot-ers Association in the United States stated, When you cast one vote towards the election, we will be able to build the strongest and most powerful political voice in the United States. Therefore, we need to cast the votes on each election and by doing this, our voices will be heard towards the political decision making process in the United States. Our positions may be upgraded to build up on Korean Voter Network.

Director Kim, provided an example of the 1995 Los Angeles Riots. The political groups the United States did not take care in the Korean War were ignored and a serious physical and fi-nancial loss occurred. The US government and political groups did not provided any benefiting factors from the riot. What we need from this knowledge is that we need to gather and cast our votes. We need to raise our voices for the political group. So for this reason, the Grass Root Movement was built.

While the movement was in action, there were many achieve-ments and a overall positive view on Korea was noticed. The most important achievement and critical result by doing this project, was that Korea became one of Visa Exemptions coun-tries. This way, many Koreans are able to visit Korea and the US without a visa. Many politicians in the US started to recognize Comfort women. Poliicians were able to pass the legislative de-cision urging Japan to apologize to the comfort women officially through the legislative branch from the US Congress. Many is-sues regarded the protection of Dokdo. It was discussed and activated through the Grass Root Movement and especially in Boston; the Grass Root Movement is with Choi, Hyeyeon who is doing a legal battle against Toyota. Director Kim sent a message out in search of hope to have a better case conclusion.

He also stressed that all of these are possible from the power of the voters casting their votes. He defines three important conditions. First, the electorates active participation is valued. Second, issues should be able to be appealed to a higher politi-cal power and persuade the authority group. Lastly, in gathering the votes, these conditions should harmonize well enough their goal.

In this meeting, Nah, Wonchang, secretary of the Korea Em-bassy attended at the meeting and he explained the importance of the Korea-US FTA Business Coalition, and he requested the Korean community to participate in the online Action Center act.koreauspartnership.org to combine forces to urge ratifica-tion of FTA Business Coalition as soon as possible.

This meeting was held by the Korea Economic Institute.

Many students with perfect SAT scores were asked to give three points of advice and in total ten were compiled for students who are preparing for the SAT currently. Achieving a perfect score is more than just continual training. (The percentage represents the agree-ing answers.)

Tip One: Read Everything; 50%Some may read just to get good grades in school, but it helps in receiving high scores too! This is a very crucial point that needs to get across. Rather than reading only best-selling books, it is important to read challenging reads. Newspapers and classic novels are a great source of rich vocabulary and building critical analysis skills.

Tip Two: Practice; 42% Buy SAT prep books or have them on hand. The books will provide you with test taking strategies and other notes, but the most important part is the back of the book. The books allow practice using multiple tests. It is beneficial for you to take the test in the given time

and try to maximize your score in the time frame.

Tip Three: Relaxation is key, Its just the SAT; 41%It really just is a test. Concentrate on taking the tests and calm yours nerves. You are prepared by the time you walk in that class room and therefore you just need to be con-fident in yourself. It is more likely to receive lower scores with a low confidence level.

    Encouragement will raise scores.

Tip Four: Memorize Vocabulary; 20% Memorizing vocabulary always helps. Enriching your vocabulary is not only for the SAT and keep learning more words. There is no shortcut in learning the definitions of the vo-cabulary. However, flashcards or other learning techniques are helpful.

Tip Five: Dont study the night before. Go sleep; 14%On school tests, studying the most you possibly can is great. History, physics, etc. This plan works great, but for the SAT you need sleep. It will help you relax, and be wide awake in the duration of the test.

Tip Six: Pace yourself; 9% Be healthy, but also pace yourself. It is essential.

Tip Seven: Focus on your weaknesses; 8% Some focus on their strengths, but they should really be working on their weaknesses because you are weak.

Tip Eight: Check your work, twice; 7% Always go back and check your work, it may be different.

Tip Nine: Prepare Early; 7% If you plan on taking the SAT junior year, at least start preparing for the SAT as a sopho-more. The earlier, the better your score will be.

Tip Ten: Take a Prep Course; 5% Most students do not study by themselves but it is an important step in reaching higher scores.

    ASK DUCKY

The New England Korean NewsEnglish Version Editor: Eugenia Kim

    Dear Ducky,

My life is so stressful and I wonder why everyone else looks very relaxed. There are so many things that my par-ents want me to do! They want me to be a doctor or a lawyer when I grow up. My moms a doctor, and my dad is a lawyer so that is where the expectations stem from. Also, all Korean parents seem to want their children to be-come doctors or lawyers, as if thats the only job in todays world! I think my mom wanted to be a lawyer but became a doctor because she is always nagging me to become a lawyer like my dad, and with my dad vice versa. Why do parents give their unfulfilled dreams to their children and want it to be granted by us? I am not a leprechaun! I cant just become this amazing lawyer or doctor. We have our own dreams and failures. I want to be an engineer and make my dream car. Some days, I just want to be a librari-an and then I would be able to read books forever and ever. Whenever I ever I pass by the ice cream section at Hmart, I want to own a supermarket and then I would be able to own all that ice cream! The last one was a little forced, but whenever I tell my parents they scold me and insist that I was born to be a lawyer, or doctor. How can I change their expectations? Or, should I just change my dreams? Sincerely,Dream Shifter

    Dear Dream Shifter,

You parents just want the best education and best life path for you. They are not necessarily trying to make you ac-complish what they couldnt because your parents are al-ready very well off. Try to understand your parents. Also, when your parents are discussing educational paths you just rebel and say that you want to own a grocery store that would make the nicest people in the world a little angry. That is like telling someone that is giving you 984833453372 dollars that you do not need it because you already own that much money. If you were smart about your actions, you would receive the money gratefully and move on with life. Live on with your parents expectations because they are really good, but if you really cant just aim for one job. Do not change your dreams because there is not even one job that you really want to be, so you can keep brainstorming. Follow your heart,Ducky Dear Ducky,

There is a boy in my Italian class. End of story? My years of friendship with my best friend is about to end because of this one boy. My friend really likes him, but sometimes I feel like he likes me. I dont like him at all, but sometimes

my friend is overly reactive in front of him so we started to talk more often. I do not want to lose my friend because of him. I like both of them as friends! I also need to study, I should be studying instead of writing this question. What can I do? How can I keep them both as my friends, even if my friend starts noticing he likes me? Sincerely, Broken Triangle

    Dear Broken Triangle,

You dont exactly know that he likes you and he just may be a very kind person in general. If you want to think that he likes you, that is okay too. However, just do not make any hasty mistakes with an assumption that he likes you. If he really does not, your friend will not notice anything weird either. You have years of friendship and therefore your friendship will not break that easily due to one guy. Do you like him also? Because if you didnt this is not that big of deal. Just let your friend like him, and life has a way of working things out.Dont Assume,Ducky Dear Ducky,

Apparently, I have attitude. Well, thats okay because I think that they just cant understand how I think. When-ever I say something, they just make me so mad with their negative feedback and so I get mad. I am not a robot. Im also not a cyborg. I dont have a programmed set of rules in my head and therefore I rebel with this so called at-titude. They get mad so easily! I do not know what to do because now if I open my mouth they say Im rude. What can I even do? Sincerely,So Annoyed

Dear So Annoyed, In that case, you should start off with a clean slate. Prove to your parents that you can be nice without attitude. Also, think about everything you say twice before it gets let out in to the world. This way, you know for sure that you are not giving off this attitude that your parents scold about. They know that you are not a robot, but maybe they just would like you to be submissive and care for your par-ents. As long as you think about every move you do before hand, you should be fine.Good luck,Ducky Dear Ducky,

I sometimes get, like one, bad grade on a test and I just

never tell my parents. One day they found out about it and they got so mad! They accused me of never telling them my scores! They will find out someday so they could just wait. Why do I have to tell them my score all the time? Also, usually I just forget to tell them, but they get really mad if I say that as an excuse. What should I do? Sincerely,Scolded Grades

    Dear Scolded Grades,

It is not illegal to not tell your grades to your parents once in a while but if your parents want you to tell them your grades you should tell them. Also, if they did not believe you I guess you will just have to be more careful next time. You do not want your parents to be mad at you just because you didnt tell them one test grade. Be happy that you have all good test grades, and keep up the good work!Good luck,Ducky Dear Ducky,

One day my mom gave me a huge To Do list. She might as well have thrown some huge mountain boulder on my head and knocked me unconscious. The boulder was labeled To Do and I am crumbling underneath it. Scary picture, right? Why does she give me so many things to do! I have to play the piano, go to lesson, clarinet lessons, clarinet practice, tutors for various subjects, school homework, church ac-tivities, soccer practice, read my books, eat, sleep, the list goes on! If I do all these things, the last agenda item will be crossed off. My mom said without these tasks, I cannot survive in this world. I feel like if I do these tasks I will be crushed by the boulder and fail miserably to my death under a rock. What can I do? I want a life, and work hard in it, but I would like to awake. Sincerely,Walking Zombie

    Dear Walking Zombie,

That is actually very scary. I am sure that this To Do list is very big if you compared it to a big boulder that will crush you. I am sure you can survive in this world, but your mom means that she wants you to live with no regrets and fulfill-ing all aspects of a good college resume. Get rid of the im-age of a boulder crushing your death because that way you will be able to start the To Do list with less fear of failure.Start your list,Ducky

The Distant Hours, the recent work of Kate Morton--the au-thor of The Forgotten Garden and the renowned writer of the romantic thriller genre, has been chosen as the New York Times bestseller. The book essentially is a mysterious story of a letter posted in 1941 finally reaching its destination, Lon-don, in 1992 that involves around a rundown castle with in-triguing and secretive family history. The story begins when the letter posted during the World War II reaches Meredith Burchill in 1992. An editor of a newspaper in London and the daughter of Meredith, Edie, receives the letter to learn for the first time that her mom was on a refugee life for 18 months at

the enchanting Milderhurst Castle during the Second World War. Milderhurst, the home of a famous childrens book au-thor Raymond Blythe and his three daughters, is intriguing enough to spark Edies interests. Edie, who enjoyed Blythes book as a child, visits the castle out of curiosity to meet Ray-mond Blythes three daughters. Her strange encounter of the youngest Blythe, Juniper, gives her a weird sensation that there must be a dark family history that involves the Blythe family, the gory castle, and her mom, Meredith.

The Distant Hours shifts back and forth between the Milder-hurst Castle in 1941 and that in 1992. Instead of overwhelm-ing readers with loads of evidences and details, Kate Morton

carefully peels layers of mysteries in the story--only to heighten the readers sense of interest and intrigue. Since it is a thriller, the book has some creepy moments; how-ever, Mortons excellent descriptions and leading of the plot blow life to the old castle and the mysterious family history. The book tends to move on slowly, so it would be the best to read with excess time on hands.
