Our Parish Vision Notre Dame of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic community of faith called to be missionary disciples

of Jesus Christ, for the purpose of bringing about the Kingdom.

Our Parish Mission Formed by the Word, fed at the Table, and inspired by

the Holy Spirit, we INVITE, WELCOME and GUIDE each other into relationship with Christ, to GO OUT

and MAKE missionary disciples.

TRUE PROPHETS

In Deuteronomy today we hear that God's very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God's mouth. In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God's own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today's Gospel we learn that Jesus' fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn't an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God's purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God's very words filling our mouths.

Dear Fr. O’ Donovan,

Please accept our most sincere gratitude for supporting and allowing the collection of gift cards by your parishioners for the benefit of the constituents of NAMI Morris.

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Morris is dedicated to building better lives for those affected by mental illness in Morris County. This past holiday season, the incredible generosity of your parish community helped us bring joy to over 100 members of NAMI’s Community Hope, whose mission is to “Help individuals, including veterans, and their families, overcome mental illness, addiction, homelessness and poverty by providing housing and support services.”

Your parishioners’ kind and thoughtful gift at Christmas is merely a reflection of their giving spirit throughout the year. Thank you once again for considering NAMI Morris as a beneficiary of your parish community’s charitable donations in 2017.

Sincerely,

NAMI Morris Executive Board

CAN YOU HELP?

As you may be aware, we have partnered with the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris County. They are reaching out for help:

"We received a referral for a woman that had been homeless for several years and was recently housed in her own apartment. Her health has declined and access to some things in her apartment is a bit challenging. We are hoping Notre Dame can fulfill the need of a stepping stool so she can reach her cabinets and a microwave which is her main source to cook. Let me know if this is possible and thank you in advance for your help."

If you can help, please comment or send an email to [email protected]. Items don't have to be new but they do have to be in good condition. Bless you!

FROM NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS TO LENTEN RESOLVES

At the beginning of the year, Fr. Jhon shared with us some key practices for the domestic church, that is our homes. As we head into Lent, may these

practices inspire us to strengthen our relationships and bring, with more intention, love and joy into our homes.

Seven statements or responses to share in marital relationships:

1. I love you. 2. Thank you! 3. I am sorry. You can also add, PLEASE FORGIVE ME. 4. Tell me about your day. 5. How can I help? 6. I’ll be glad to. 7. Would you go out with me?

Seven practices for families with children:

1. Family prayer 2. Plan a family vacation or go to a pilgrimage with your

family. 3. Celebrate your kids: their baptismal anniversary, their

patron saint. 4. Holy water and sacramentals. Use them on you, on your

children, on your bedrooms. Do not be ashamed to wear a scapular.

5. Make Mass the highlight of your life and that of your family. Talk it up. Talk about the good things of the Mass. What was good or bad? Did you hear father’s homily?

6. Talk with your kids about the sacrament of Reconciliation, about regular confession.

7. Don’t just teach your faith, enjoy it! MORRIS CATHOLIC ST. PATRICK’S DAY 5K RUN

The 7th Annual Crusader Challenge 5k Run will be held Saturday, March 17 at 9am at the Denville campus. Doors open at 7:30am. Proceeds benefit the Morris Catholic scholarship and athletic programs and the Denville Public Assistance Fund. For more information, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/NJ/Denville/CrusaderChallenge5K or contact [email protected].

Dear Notre Dame of Mt Carmel Parish Community,

We at St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Paterson would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for all the beautiful gifts that were gifted to our Religious Education children.

The day’s celebration was filled with six different activities where all the children participated. The story of the birth of Jesus was told by one of our Salesian Sisters and there were some people dressed up representing Mary, Joseph, the 3 Kings. Sister Eileen, who is one of our Religious Education teachers, made the camel and donkey which were present as well. It was a day to remember and very meaningful to the children. The hugs I received from our children in the act of appreciation, gratefulness and gratitude is a blessing of its own! Many blessings to all of you and best wishes for 2018!

Missionary Discipleship...

I n his autobiography, Morris West suggests that at a certain age our

lives simplify and we need have only three phrases le  in our spiritual vocabulary: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! He is right, if we understand fully what is implied in living out gra tude. Gra tude is the ul mate virtue, undergirding everything else, even love. It is synonymous with holiness.

Gra tude not only defines sanc ty, it also defines maturity. We are mature to the degree that we are grateful. But what brings us there? What makes for a deeper human maturity? I would like to suggest ten major demands that reside inside both human and Chris an maturity:

1.  Be willing to carry more and more of life’s complexi es with empathy: Few things in life, including our own hearts and mo ves, are black or white, either‐or, simply good or simply bad. Maturity invites us to see, understand, and accept this complexity with empathy so that, like Jesus, we cry tears of understanding over our own troubled ci es and our own complex hearts.

2.  Transform jealousy, anger, bi erness, and hatred rather than give them back in kind: Any pain or tension that we do not transform we will retransmit. In the face of jealousy, anger, bi erness, and hatred we must be like water purifiers, holding the poisons and toxins inside of us and giving back just the pure water, rather than being like electrical cords that simply pass on the energy that flows through them.

3.  Let suffering so en rather than harden our souls: Suffering and humilia on find us all, in full measure, but how we respond to them, with forgiveness or bi erness, will determine the level of our maturity and the color of our person. This is perhaps our

ul mate moral test: Will my humilia ons so en or harden my soul?

4.  Forgive: In the end there is only one condi on for entering heaven (and living inside human community), namely, forgiveness. Perhaps the greatest struggle we have in the second‐half of our lives is to forgive: forgive those who have hurt us, forgive ourselves for our own shortcomings, and forgive God for seemingly hanging us out unfairly to dry in this world. The greatest moral impera ve of all is not to die with a bi er, unforgiving

heart.

5.  Live in gra tude: To be a saint is to be fueled by gra tude, nothing more and nothing less. Let no one deceive you with the no on that a passion for truth, for church, or even for God can trump or bracket the non‐nego able impera ve to be gracious always. Holiness is gra tude. Outside of gra tude we find ourselves doing many of the right things for the wrong reasons.

6.   Bless more and curse less: We are mature when we define ourselves by what we are for rather than by what we are against and especially when, like Jesus, we are looking out at others and seeing them as blessed (“Blessed are you!”) rather than as cursed (“Who do you think you are!”). The capacity to praise more than to cri cize defines maturity.

7.   Live in an ever‐greater transparency and honesty: We are as sick as our sickest secret, but we are also as healthy as we are honest. We need, as Mar n Luther once put it, “to sin bravely and

honestly”.  Maturity does not mean that we are perfect or faultless, but that we are honest.

8.  Pray both affec vely and liturgically: The fuel we need to resource ourselves for gra tude and forgiveness does not lie in the strength of our own willpower, but in grace and community. We access that through prayer. We are mature to the degree that we open our own helplessness and invite in God’s strength and to the degree that we pray with others that the whole world will do the same thing.

9.  Become ever‐wider in your embrace: We grow in maturity to the degree that

we define family (Who is my brother or sister?) in way that

is ever‐more ecumenical, interfaith, post‐ideological, and non‐discriminatory. We are mature only when we are compassionate as God is compassionate, namely,

when our sun too shines on those we like and those we do

not. There comes a  me when it is me to turn in our cherished moral

placards for a basin and a towel.

10.  Stand where you stand and let God protect you: In the end, we are all vulnerable, con ngent, and helpless both to protect our loved ones and ourselves. We cannot guarantee life, safety, salva on, or forgiveness for ourselves or for those we love. Maturity depends upon accep ng this with trust rather than anxiety. We can only do our best, whatever our place in life, wherever we stand, whatever our limits, whatever our shortcomings, and trust that this is enough, that if we die at our post, honest, doing our duty, God will do the rest.

God is a prodigiously loving, fully understanding, completely empathic parent. We are mature and free of false anxiety to the degree that we grasp that and trust that truth.

JOYFUL DISCIPLESHIP:

A Journey from Encounter to Transformation

Our Parish Lenten Mission February 11 & 12, 2018

Sunday & Monday evenings at 7:30 PM

Guiding us on the journey will be

RON HUNTLEY Director of Coaching & Development at Divine Renovation Network

Join us for two inspiring evenings of reflection, song and powerful insights as we are led by Ron Huntley in our Lenten Mission. Ron works closely with Father James Mallon, author of Divine Renovation, the book that inspired our own journey of parish renewal. Ron has personally coached our senior leadership team for over a year, so he has a good sense of our culture here at Notre Dame. He is excited about meeting our flock!

Ron will explore with us why joy is at the heart of authentic discipleship, and what the difference is between a “believer” and a true disciple. What does a disciple look like and how does being one have the power to transform our lives?

Plan to kick off your Lenten journey by joining us for these two inspiring evenings!
