WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

Perks. Rewards. Cash Back. Fuel Points. Bonus Miles. Member Discounts. Instant Savings.

Everyone is trying to give us something “extra” as encouragement to use their services, shop their stores, or fill up our tank at their pump. With marketing angles vectoring on us from every which way, we’ve become accustomed to asking, “What’s in it for me?”

Having recently wrapped up the Easter season with Pentecost, praying for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our own lives, and celebrating the feasts of the Most Blessed Trinity and Corpus Christi, it should be no surprise as we ease into Ordinary Time to see the readings at Mass unfolding for us how to live out our life in Christ as a generous gift of self.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “To the Lord’s Sermon on the Mount it is fitting to add the moral catechesis of the apostolic teachings, such as Romans 12-15, 1 Corinthians 12-13, Colossians 3-4, Ephesians 4-5, etc. This doctrine hands on the Lord’s teaching with the authority of the apostles, particularly in the presentation of the virtues that flow from faith in Christ and are animated by charity, the principal gift of the Holy Spirit. ‘Let charity be genuine. . . . Love one another with brotherly affection. . . . Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality’ (Romans 12:9-13)” (CCC 1971).

Our homes and our parish are two places of welcome, like that of the Shunnamite woman in the first reading. Hospitality has always been a trademark of the people of God, from ancient Israel to modern Christian churches. Abraham entertained angels unawares. Rhoda welcomed St. Peter at the door after his prison break. Lydia let St. Paul stay in her home on his way through Thyatira. Benedictine abbeys were the hotels of medieval Europe. Dorothy Day established Catholic Workers houses to build community in cold urban enclaves. St. Teresa of Calcutta established homes for the dying for whom no one else would care. Christians are known by their generosity, their welcome, their hearts and homes open to love of God and love of neighbor.

What’s in it for me? Sacrifice. Self-denial. Surrender. Hospitality. Happiness. Holiness. Joy. Jesus.

Divine Healer, God of Wholeness, we place these parishioners in Your hands; we ask for healing, but also for acceptance of their illness and of Your holy plan. Help them and us to embrace whatever You have in mind for them. Support them in their anxieties, fears, pains, and the frustrations of their illness. Support them with the strength of the Holy Spirit. We ask this in the name of Jesus, compassionate healer of those in need of health and hope. Amen.

DISCIPLES IN ACTION

ST. SUSANNA SAYS THANK YOU TO A PURPLE HEART VETERAN

(Purple Heart Recipient) E-8 Senior Chief James Hatch was shot at close range with an AK-47 on a hostage rescue mission in 2009. He was part of 150 Direct Action Combat Missions. As a K9 handler on several deployments, James’ life was regularly spared by the work of K9s – one of the most memorable was Spike. And on James’ final deployment, the night he was critically wounded, a K9 saved James’ life while losing his own. From that evening on, James oriented his life around the training, care and preservation of working dogs. Jimmy founded Spikes K9 Fund after his recovery. Spikes K9 Fund is a 501c3 Tax-Exempt Organization. In addition to working as the founder and president of the fund, he works with local law enforcement and has adopted a former service dog in need of medical attention.

Help St. Susanna honor Senior Chief James Hatch by providing him with “thank-you” cards. Please place all cards in the marked boxes, in the Gathering Space, by July 10th. This will allow him to have the cards prior to the Warrior Weekend celebrated in Middletown, OH, July 19th-23rd. After the Warrior Weekend, St. Susanna will be sending a care package to James to let him know that the St. Susanna Community will keep him in our thoughts and prayers.

COME BUILD WITH US!

St. Susanna is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity on July 15th from 8:30am-4:00pm. We will be working on a home in Newport, KY. Individuals, 16 years of age or older, are needed to assist this nonprofit Christian housing ministry. No prior experience in home building/finishing work is needed, just a desire to be the Hands of Christ to insure a safe and affordable place to live for families. For more information, please contact Mary Jo Burns, [email protected] or 398-3821, ext. 3120.

Online registration must be completed by July 7th: www.stsusanna.org/habitatforhumanity.

THE FAIR TRADE MINISTRY IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

St. Susanna has an active Fair Trade Ministry which wants to grow and expand. We currently offer monthly sales after Mass and we occasionally host Ten Thousand Villages, a Fair Trade Organization that sells handiwork made by artisans from all over the world. The goal of Fair Trade is to allow disadvantaged individuals to earn a fair wage for their work so that they can improve their family situation as well as the community in which they live.

St. Susanna’s Fair Trade Ministry is looking for volunteers to help with the monthly sales after weekend Masses. If you have a few minutes to spare after the Mass that you currently attend, please consider volunteering for this ministry. Those few minutes can be life changing for individuals living in challenging situations just trying to provide for their family.

If you are looking for an opportunity to touch the lives of the poor and vulnerable that live in developing countries, contact Mary Jo Burns, [email protected] or 398-3821, ext. 3120 and become a volunteer for our parish Fair Trade Ministry. For more information on Fair Trade, go to fairtradeusa.org.

To Live With Christ

A priest friend of mine visited a family with several sons thinking about

the priestly vocation. During his visit he celebrated Mass for them at the local parish. The Gospel reading was the same as today: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me….” My friend thought twice before reading it, afraid that the father who wasn’t open to his sons’ vocations would think he picked this passage on purpose. He read it anyway and, yes, got the reaction he suspected he’d get.

Most words in the Gospels are challenging. Jesus calls us to love him above all things. This means he has to come first, and sometimes other loves, as good as they are, cannot be the ultimate criteria. He tells us to “lose our life” to find it, and sometimes that loss is real and painful.

He demands this because he himself experienced its truth. In his public ministry, he put his mission and love of souls ahead of spending more time with family and friends. When religious leaders, government officials, and others criticized and persecuted him, he didn’t back down,

even if it affected his loved ones. He was faithful in charity. He didn’t look for problems, but he didn’t run from them, either. He avoided unnecessary conflict when he could, but he completely obeyed God’s will and embraced the hardships of loving until the end.

This kind of sacrifice brings great joy if endured with acceptance. As Romans tells us, “If, then, we have died with Christ, …we shall also live with him.”

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

“…Whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:37).

For ReflectionHow can I live my life as though nothing is more important than Jesus? Do I regularly witness to my love for Jesus, using words when necessary?
