RoboBOTS has completed its 7th consecutive season in Northwestern PA. The RoboBOTS program was funded for the first 5 years through a combination of local business sponsors and grants made available through the Regional Center for Workforce Excellence. NEW in 2013, the NWPA NTMA Education Foundation offered qualified programs through the EITC (Educational Improvement Tax Credit) to support the promotion of manufacturing careers to local youth including RoboBOTS.

Thanks to the supporters of RoboBOTS, each team received funds through NWPA

NTMA to buy the materials they need to build their BOTS. In addition, the top 2 teams received funds from NWPA NTMA toward a trip to the National Robotics League Competition in Indianapolis, IN, May 17-19, 2013.

With the help of their teachers and donated funds from area sponsors, students from 19 area schools worked feverishly for weeks creating their awesome BOTS. On March 23, 2013, a record 35 teams of students competed in this fun and exciting learning experience at Meadville Area High School.

The Academic Outreach Team had a very productive 2013. The team focused attention on reaching out to students at the earliest opportunity. They would like to provide useful information to students in the 7th and 8th grade so they can use the remaining four years of high school to pursue their goals.

A collective effort resulted in a tri-fold brochure that is intended to be handed out at career fairs and in the schools as well. The information highlights the careers that are available in manufacturing and a reasonable ballpark of earning potential and how that relates to education.

A Powerpoint presentation was developed for the purpose of informing area educators of the opportunities that exist to partner with the NTMA in an effort to reach out to all of the students. Examples of the efforts include: Manufacturing Student Clubs, RoboBots, Shop Tours, Job Shadowing, and Career Fairs.

Team members have met with Superintendents, Principals, Guidance Counselors, Teachers, and Mentors in order to develop a teamwork atmosphere. We most recently coordinated efforts to work with the CCCTC to help promote the opportunities they offer.

Thanks to the Academic Outreach Team and all those who have offered support this year.

NWPA NTMA presents a series of tours that open the doors of manufacturing businesses to the community to inform more people about our industry. Invited guests include students, parents, administration, and teachers plus community members. The end goal of exposing these groups to the advanced technology, clean workplaces, and seriously cool parts being manufactured is to encourage students who are mechanically inclined and right for our trade to have the exposure and opportunity to consider education and careers in our trade. Highpoint Tool in Saegertown opened their doors in May 2013.

National Associate, Exact On-line, hosted an event at the Iroquois Club to Celebrate Manufacturing on October 3! Live jazz music, delicious food and drink at a beautiful venue set the perfect atmosphere for networking among over 40 members. It was a great launch to MFG Day 2013!

Member Companies Open Their doors in Celebration Of Manufacturing day

NWPA NTMA celebrated Manufacturing Day, October 4, 2013. Many thanks to Member Companies: C&J Industries, Tech Molded Plastics, PMI, NuTec, Peters’ Heat Treating, Kuhn Tool & Die Co., JBM Technologies, PA Tool & Gages, Bra-Vor, Highpoint Tool and Acutec for opening your doors for student tours on October 4 and throughout the year. There were eight groups totaling over 145 students from schools in Erie and Crawford County touring on MFG Day and plans for five additional groups to tour later this month. NWPA NTMA appreciates our member’s support of not only hosting the tours, but also in making funds available to offset busing expenses for the participating schools through the success of our chapter’s events.

NWPA NTMA hosted a successful Insurance Expo in September 2013 to discuss specific concerns with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). There were over 80 participants in attendance. During the event, representatives from the major carriers participated in a panel session moderated by Steve Fisher, President of the Pennsylvania Association of Health Underwriters. Dan Severo, NWPAHU Legislative Committee Chairman, provided a legislative update by explaining some of the required changes that will become effective in 2014, as well as the early renewal options that are available to many employers.

This event would not have been possible without the support of the insurance companies and firms that participated. The Major Sponsors were Aetna, HealthAmerica, Highmark and UPMC. Additional sponsors were Aflac, BOST Workplace Benefits, Colonial Life, The DJB Group, EHD, Federated Insurance, Lincoln Financial, North American Benefits (NABCO), Northwest Insurance, UNUM and Vision Benefits of America.

Three Roundtables were hosted by NWPA NTMA in 2013 at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel. The Roundtables provide the forum for Erie area members to meet for lunch and hold open discussion with peers. Topics discussed include: finding employees and employee testing, safety audits, recommended resources for services, workload and forecasts, and more. There will be 3 roundtables scheduled in 2014 – hope to see you there!

NWPA NTMA holds our Annual Membership Meeting in December each year at the historic Riverside Inn, Cambridge Springs. The meeting following dinner includes annual Chapter Business including Team Recognition and Election of Officers. In 2013, we feature Guest Speaker, Lisa Pustelak, and Certified Life Success Consultant, presenting “Dare to be Aware... of the Changes in our Community, Industry, and Ourselves”. The session will help participants: Become aware of how they think about the changes we face every day, Learn two questions that can keep you focused on the good in every person or situation, Realize how important it is to DO what you KNOW.
