    SOCIO ECONOMIC CONDITION

The region has more than two-third of total geographical area covered by hills, sothe agriculture is the dominant economic activity providing economy to 64.2%Of the total workers.

However, due to lack of appropriate strategies for development of naturalresources, weak geographical links and poor infrastructure facilities, the region ishandicapped in catching up with the agricultural developmental pathways.

As per the 2001 census, the annual per capita income of NER is 6,625 INRagainst the rest of India average of 10,254 INR. Nearly 34.28% of the population is

below poverty line as compared to the national average of 26.1%. However, the NER is a highly literate region. Except for Arunachal Pradesh, all the other stateshave literacy rates about or above national average of 64.8% which provides agood pool of educated human resources in the region.

The educated population of this region can help in creating tourism growth awarenessand this can lead to socio-economic growth.
